The Crayon Stripes Pullover knitting pattern turns our Cotton Pure and Serif yarns into a wearable doodle made just for toddlers and kids. Easy to knit and full of charm, this comfy striped pullover is like a children’s book illustration of a kid’s cheery sweater!

You work the Crayon Stripes Pullover flat from one sleeve cuff to the other, knitting smooth stockinette in one continuous piece and leaving a generous gap in the middle for the head to pop through. Stripe as you go, carrying your yarns neatly along the edge… No fiddly ends to weave in! When you’re done, just seam the sides and pick up stitches to knit a few rounds for the cozy rolled neckline and hem, and it’s ready for your little artist to wear.

Cotton Pure and Serif are two absolutely beautiful cotton yarns to knit with, one a smooth, matte sport weight and the other a wavy, lustrous DK yarn. These very different yarns can be knit on the same size needles, right at the loose end of Cotton Pure’s gauge and at the dense end of Serif’s. Striping them creates an irresistibly soft, textural sweater that you can toss in the washer and dryer after a play date!

Pick your kid’s very favorite shade from Cotton Pure’s great big palette, the color of that one crayon that’s a little shorter than the rest. Stripe it with Serif in Heirloom White for a classic crayon-on-paper look or choose another hue of Serif to mix and match!

Knit a cozy Crayon Stripes Pullover for a little one who loves to color outside the lines. Every stitch will take you back to that magical feeling of having a crayon in your hand and a big idea in your head!

NOTES
CONSTRUCTION
This sweater is worked mostly flat and in one piece, starting at the cuff of the Right Sleeve. You will work that Sleeve, then cast on for the Front and Back and work even to the Neck Opening. There, you will divide stitches in half, continue the Front first, then the Back, then rejoin the two, having created a slit for the Neck Opening. You will next work the remainder of the Front and Back even, then bind off stitches from both and work the Left Sleeve. To finish, you will sew seams along the underside of the Sleeves and the sides of the Body, then work edgings in the round for the Collar and Hem.

Repeat for other side.
WORK COLLAR
NOTE: For help picking up stitches, please visit our Picking Up Stitches Tutorial and scroll down to the Along A Vertical Edge: Stockinette Stitch video.

Place marker and join for working in the round.
Knit every round until Collar measures 1 inch, unrolled.
Bind off all stitches loosely, using a spare needle a size larger, if necessary, to ensure Neck Opening is not too tight.
WORK HEM
Holding piece upside down, starting at bottom of Left Side, use longer circular needles and Yarn A to pick up and knit 126 (132, 140, 150) stitches evenly around bottom edge (approximately 3 stitches for every 5 rows).

This is so adorable! And Serif is wonderfully soft. It’s so cute, I’m tempted to do some math and try to convert this to an adult size. Can you think of any reasons that would be a waste of time / wouldn’t work? I’m imagining a loose-fitting sweatshirt style summer sweater. Right? Ooh la-la!
Hi Kelly!
That sounds like a lovely idea and can definitely be done! With a bit of math, you should be able to convert this pattern without issues. We can’t wait for you to give it a try!
Happy making,
Gavriella
YES! I’m a 540 month old fan of serif ‘-)
— makes wonderful summer washcloths. And a loose “sweatshirt” would be fantastic in this pattern — perfect for cozy beach bonfires! thanks for asking Kelly and if u do the maths, pls post and share! xo
I love the look of this pattern and it seems so unfussy, no button holes, etc. plus a neck that is pretty child-friendly. I have some lovely I have some cheerful Tulip Cotton I have never knit up and wondering if that would sub for Cotton Pure. There would be less of a thickness contrast, but the yarn looks pretty similar in dimension to SErif? What do you think?
Hi Sue,
That is a great idea although we definitely recommend swatching before starting to be sure you can get the same tension as the pattern. This will ensure your project results in the intended size!
Happy making!
Gavriella
Can the sweater go in the washer AND the dryer? The Cotton Pure says yes, the Serif only says machine wash, nothing about dry. I cannot in good conscience give the mother of a toddler a sweater that needs to be pampered.
Hi Nan,
I’m happy to share that both Cotton Pure and Serif are both machined wash and dryer approved!
All the best,
Gavriella
I would like to know if anyone can get close to the gauge with Serif and a size 4 needle! I’ve gone down to 2 and I’m still not close! I’d love to make this sweater in 3 sizes for my grandchildren. Any suggestions?
Hi Andrea,
I’m so sorry you are having such issues achieving gauge! Could you please let us know the closest gauge you are able to get along with if you washed and blocked your swatch ahead of measuring? We find that the fabric does shrink after being machine laundered but we will keep an eye out for your reply!
All the best,
Gavriella
Hello,
Thanks for the free pattern!
The slit for the Neck Opening looks a bit strange at the front side… ? Is it too big (horizontal) and too small (vertical)?
May be I can change that myself.
Kind regards
Hi Lut,
You can definitely alter the size of the neck opening if you wish! The designer envisioned a bit of a wide neck for this design but you can absolutely customize it to your desired size. We love always encourage makers add their own twists to their projects when making our designs!
All the best,
Gavriella
Kelly, I love that idea, but don’t have the math/tech skills to do it myself. If you are able to make an adult size, would you post the changes? Or Purl, could you possibly do an addition to make this for adult sizes? It would indeed be a lovely sweatshirt-type summer sweater!
In the instructions there seems to be an omission.
“Repeat rows 1-4 (17, 20, 22) times. I thought the instructions were for four sizes. This looks like for only 3. Help! (I am wanting to do the size 4)
Anita Streeter
Hi Anita,
Oh no! This section of the pattern actually should read “Repeat Rows 1–4 fourteen (17, 20, 22) times, then repeat Rows 1 and 2 one more time.” which is what I see on my side. Could you please let us know if you are not able to see the same on your end? If not, could you please email us at [email protected] so that we can try to help resolve this issue?
We will keep an eye out for your reply!
All the best,
Gavriella
I was thinking the same thing! Can you suggest a resource for calculating the conversions?
Hi Nancy,
We are so happy that you are interested in a larger size of this pattern. I don’t have an exact resource to point you to but I’d be happy to provide some tips! You will want to start off with a gauge swatch and measure both your stitches and rows per inch. From there you can calculate the respective measurements of the wearer by multiplying the desired measurement by your stitches or rows per inch. If you’d like a more in depth idea on resizing though, I’d recommend searching “resizing a sweater” or something similar on YouTube. I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I agree this pattern is adorable. Could you suggest other color combinations that would work? Maybe a yellow/blue? Or lemongrass green and navy nightfall? Is it important to have the serif yarn as the lighter color?
Hi Jill,
Thank you for writing in! You can definitely switch the contrast of the colors to have Serif be your light or dark color. You will just want to make sure you have the correct yardages for which ever you choose for both Yarn A and B. Lemongrass Green and Navy Nightfall would be wonderful together. Another combo that would look great would be maybe Yellow Haystack and and Navy Nightfall!
Happy knitting!
Gavriella
If Kelly’s adult sweater works out, please share it with us. I love her idea.
I think this would be great for adults too!
I would love to get an adult version of this pattern as well, but I’m going to try to figure it out myself. Would still love it if someone successful posts an adult version please.
Continuing with gauge question:
I knitted a swatch with size 2 (or maybe 1, I tried several), washed and blocked and the swatch was 6.5 inches.
☹️
Hi Andrea,
We’re so sorry you are still running into issues! Could you please send us photos of your swatch with a ruler against your stitches to [email protected]? This could help us better visualize how we can help!
Best,
Gavriella
Im confused on the cable cast on. At the point I am doing it (after completing the right sleeve) I am on the right side. Instructions for the cable cast on state to be sure to start on the wrong side.
Have I misunderstood something?
Hi Irene,
That’s a great question! The very first step of a cable cast-on is to turn your work to the other side. When you’re working a cable cast-on on a right side row, you will begin by turning your work to the wrong side, and then adding the stitches. And when you’re working a cable cast-on on a wrong side row, you will begin by turning your work to the right side, and then adding the stitches.
I hope this helps clarify things!
All the best,
Lili
I want to make sure I’m doing this correctly – when determining the correct gauge do I use the stitch pattern with the 2 different yarns or just the beginning yarn?
Hi Rebecca,
That’s such a good question, thanks for asking! We recommend knitting your gauge swatch in pattern with both yarns to get the most accurate measurement. That means working the 2-row stripe pattern with both Serif and Cotton Pure (or whatever yarns you’re using). We also recommend washing and drying your swatch before taking the measurements since you’ll be washing and drying the finished pullover as well!
All the best,
Lili
Hi Hi,
Do you have a suggestion for an adult sweater pattern of yours that I could make with Serif? I LOOOOOve this yarn. I’ve made two wraps, the chevron baby blanket and an adult throw with the diamond and dot pattern with it already. It is soooo soft and amazing. I still haven’t tried to wash anything yet. But I would love to make a sweater out of it. I also wondered whether I could make the simple ribbed shrug out of serif. I made one out of plein air and like it but would love it in cotton. Thanks — lots of questions, I know.
Hi Jane,
I’m so glad you love Serif so much! We’ve fortunately designed a lot of really fun sweater patterns for DK weight yarn, so there are many good choices. The Simple Ribbed Shrug would be a great choice as well! And some others that I’d recommend in particular are the Top-Down Circular Yoke Pullover, Cocoon Cardigan, and Classic Hemmed Crewneck.
All the best,
Lili
Adorable bb sweater I just bought the yarn and needles for from you. If I’m more of a…codependent knitter (😅🧶👯♀️👥🫂👀) and deeply rely on visuals/videos walkthroughs, what would you suggest for someone like me? 1). Be pointed in the direction of a video/thumbnail/drawing Purl Soho step-by-step guided knit for this I missed somewhere (😅), 2). Make someone I know who’s better at simply reading raw patterns and forging ahead make the sweeter then do a knit-along sesh w/ me IRL (😅), or 3). Search for another vid of someone doing a striped sweater in the round like this (😅 no idea if I’ll find a matching technique)? Any tips for those of us who are visually dependent would be helpful!
Hi Merrari,
I’m so glad this pattern has caught your eye! I completely understand being a visual learner (I’m that way myself!), and I wanted to recommend our video tutorials and our free 1-On-1 Help sessions. We’ve made tutorials for every technique used in this pattern, and they’ll be linked to throughout the pattern, and you can also check out our Knitting Tutorials page for even more. And if any questions come up along the way, we’re more than happy to help out over Zoom! If you’re interested in that, you can sign up for a 1-On-1 Help appointment.
All the best,
Lili
I have just finished the right sleeve and ready to repeat rows 1 and 2, I started the sleeve with color B, off white, end with the purl side which is color A. If you repeat 1&2 , it seems it would be with color A which you just used, is that correct?? Kind of confused me. What color do you use to repeat rows 1 & 2 is the short question?!
Hi Diane,
Happy to help you get back on track! In our design, Yarn A is Cotton Pure and Yarn B is Serif, so you will be repeating Rows 1 and 2 with Serif and Rows 3 and 4 with Cotton Pure. Let me know if that helps!
All the best,
Lili
