Soft Stripes Wrap
With Novella’s mesmerizing pools of color under a wash of glowing Tussock, our Soft Stripes Wrap tells a story… One of beauty, inspiration, and the pleasure of simple knitting.
You knit this wrap with our Soft Stripes Wrap Bundle, all in easy stockinette, holding two strands throughout, just Tussock on the ends and Tussock with Novella for the rest.
This gorgeous swath of fabric is all about the yarn. The shifting colors of self-striping Novella will keep you enraptured. The colors stripe and blend, flowing into one another as you anticipate what comes next.
And you’ll love the gentle watercolor-y beauty Tussock adds. Its lustrous color is vibrant on the ends and merges with Novella’s dynamic hues in the middle, bringing the pieces of the tale together.
The fibers of these two yarns are an exquisite mix. They both have the strength and radiance of mulberry silk, while Novella adds extra fine merino for bounce and body, and Tussock’s super fine kid mohair lends a gorgeous halo to the fabric’s surface. Altogether, an incredibly soft and lovely combination.
Our wrap pairs Tussock’s Bright Thistle with Novella’s vibrant Goji Berry, but find the two that tell your story… You have nine Soft Stripes Wrap Bundles to choose from!
If you love the yarn used in this project, you’ll love all of our other yarn, too! Explore our 35+ lovingly created yarn collections, in nearly every natural fiber and spectacular color you can imagine… Only available here at Purl Soho’s online yarn shop!

NOTES
STITCH MULTIPLE
This project works over any number of stitches.
YARN DOUBLED
For the first and last 2 inches of this pattern, you will hold two strands of Yarn A (Tussock) together. Either pull from two separate balls for this, or pull from the inside and outside of one ball.
For the rest of the piece, you will hold one strand of Yarn A (Tussock) together with one strand of Yarn B (Novella).
PATTERN
With two strands of Yarn A held together (see Notes), loosely cast on 38 (76) stitches. We used a basic Long Tail Cast On.
Row 1 (wrong side): K1, p1, k1, purl to last three stitches, k1, p1, k1.
Row 2 (right side): K2, p1, knit to last three stitches, p1, k2.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures approximately 2 inches from cast-on edge.
Cut one strand of Yarn A and join Yarn B.
Holding Yarn A and Yarn B together, continue in pattern until piece measures 68 inches from cast-on edge, or if using Novella, until you have used the entirety of Yarn B.
Cut Yarn B and join another strand of Yarn A.
With two strands of Yarn A held together, continue in pattern for approximately 2 inches, ending with a wrong-side row.
With right side facing you, bind off loosely knitwise.

Good morning! I’ve knit with Tussock before and love it but Novella is new to me. Just how heavy is this wrap when knit? I’m looking for something to either wear in the spring or to be able to take to the office in the summer if the A/C is on. Would this wrap be too heavy for that? Thanks!
Hi Lynn,
This would be the perfect springtime scarf! Novella is a sportweight yarn, so while it will keep you warm, it won’t be overwhelmingly heavy. I’d say this pattern provides just the right balance of coziness to be worn in multiple seasons.
All the best,
Lili
Hi!
I’m wondering if you think this combination of yarns would be appropriate to knit a beautiful afghan/blanket. If so, how many bundles do you think I would need to make a nice size one?
Thanks so much,
Nita
Hi Nita,
Thanks for writing in, and I think these yarns would make a lovely blanket! To make a throw-size blanket of approximately 56 by 42 inches, you will likely need 7 skeins of Tussock and 15 skeins of Novella. Hope this helps, and please let us know how your project turns out!
All the best,
Lili
Thanks so much! Could you please tell me how many stitches you would cast on to get that size blanket?
Best,
Nita
Hi Nita,
You will need to cast on 266 stitches. I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I’d appreciate some color advice for your lovely Soft Stripes Wrap. I have three skeins of Tussock in Tea Rose that I would like to use. Do you think Novella in either Farmers Market or Flower Patch would work with the Tea Rose Tussock? If not, do you have other suggestions?
Thanks so much!
Hi Linda,
Thank you for writing in! What fun colors you have chosen! Tea Rose will look absolutely stunning paired with Farmer’s Market! The peachy shades will complement each other very well!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Hey Guys
I just finished the Sleeve scarf in Speckled Hen yarn. Would like to do this Scarf pattern in color pictured. I see it is out of stock. Do you have any idea when it will be back for sale? The colors are so beautiful.
Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for writing in! We are currently expecting to have Novella in the color Goji Berry back in stock in early May. We’re so sorry for the delay and are anxious to see it back too!
If that’s not too late for you, we’d recommend signing up to be notified when it returns by going to the product page (https://www.purlsoho.com/novella.html), selecting Goji Berry, and entering your email address. You can repeat this step for any other color you’re interested in as well. This way, you’ll be among the first to know!
I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any other questions.
All the best,
Gavriella
Hi Gabriella
Got the Gogi Berry, lovely yarn. Could you please email me when the Bright Thistle in Tussock comes back in. Will put the Novella away till then.
Hi Cheryl,
You can use the same method to be the first to know when Tussock in Bright Thistle is back in stock.
All the best,
Gavriella
I have several skeins of Tussock in “Tawny Dune.” (I don’t believe that color is offered on your website anymore. It’s been several years since I purchased it.) Anyway, was just wondering if you think it would work to sub out “Tawny Dune” for “Golden Lichen” with the “Desert Ridge” novella for a Soft Stripes Wrap. I love the look of the pattern. Thanks so much for all you guys do! Best, Shara
Hi Shara,
Thank you for writing in! That color combination sounds wonderful! We recommend knitting a small gauge swatch with your selected colors just to be sure you are happy with the fabric and the result of your combination. That way you can be sure you will not have to undo all of your hard work in the case that you don’t enjoy the way the colors work up together. I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
When I switch from two strands of Tussock to one strand of each yarn, should the change be made on a right or wrong side row?
Thank you.
Hi there,
Thank you for writing in! We recommend changing colors on the right side for the smoothest transition of colors! I hope this helps but please let us know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Whenever I knit in stockinette, it always curls so badly. Is there a border I could add or another stitch pattern that I could knit this in that would look good with this yarn?
Hi Emily,
Thank you for writing in! That sounds like a wonderful idea! I think adding either a seed stitch, ribbed, or garter stitch border would work wonderfully for this pattern to keep those edges from curling as much. To do this you will want to add an odd number to either side for a simple seed stitch or an even number for ribbing. Garter stitch is pretty flexible so any number of additional stitches would work. I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
This pattern looks awesome. I have 3 skeins of saffron in Brume, but I really like the fall dahlia in novella. Do you think they could go together – it’s hard for me guess. I know you don’t have the fall dahlia back in stock, but when you do….
Hi Robin,
Thank you for writing in! Brume in Saffron and Fall Dahlias would work wonderfully together for a warm and yellow toned scarf! Please let us know if there is anything else we can answer for you!
All the best,
Gavriella
Just wanted to say thanks – you guys are the best!
You are very welcome Robin! Our team is always happy to help with any questions you may have along the way!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella!
Hi, I would love to make this wrap in Lapis Lazuli and Sea Urchin, I received an email saying ‘what I loved was back in stock’ but when I check my color combo posts a little notice appears saying that it is out of stock. I think it is the Sea Urchin that is out of stock, are there crossed paths on the site or am I not seeing something?
Also, my Quartz yarn arrived, I am loving the depth and complexity of the colors (as promised) and the feel of it, (also as described or even better/softer)
Thank you for your help with the Soft Stripes Wrap.
Hi Alice,
I’m not sure why you received a back-in-stock notification at this time, but we are hoping to have Novella in Sea Urchin available again by early July! We’re so sorry for the delay and anxious to see it back as well. We’re so happy to hear that you’re loving Quartz in the meantime though!
All the best,
Lili
Hi, Lili
Thank you for getting back to me and for letting me know when Novella in Sea Urchin is due back, perhaps by then I will have at least one of my projects bound off!
My sister visited yesterday so got to see her yarn in person, she loves the Green Pickle Quartz, it was the first time she picked the color and pattern (Screen Porch Shawl) for me to knit for her so I am especially glad that she loves her choice, it makes her green eyes look amazing.
Thanks again, Alice
You’re very welcome, Alice!
All the best,
Lili
I know you are just supposed to finish the last ball of Novella for the Wrap size but do you have an estimate about how many inches long the final wrap size is? I see that you note the finished scarf size at 68 but no number for the wrap.
I don’t think it matters much, but since you knit the wrap for the sample pics just curious as to what it came out to.
I am going to stop about 3/4 through the final ball of Novella I have because I am feel like it is plenty long enough.
Hi Maureen,
The finished dimensions are 8 inches wide x 70 inches long for the scarf and 16 inches wide x 70 inches long for the wrap. They are the same size in length so you can end earlier if you’d like a shorter project.
I hope this helps!
All the best,
Gavriella
When will novella delphinium blue be back in stock? I ordered the tussock in lapis lazuli in the spring, but the novella wasn’t in stock. I can’t wait to make this soft stripes pattern for my college bound daughter.
Hi Kristi,
Thanks for writing in! Novella will be back in stock in about a week’s time. Hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
Do you know when cerulean sea + delphinium blue will be back in stock? And could you provide alternatives to create a blue themed scarf for yarn options? Thanks!
Hi Sim,
Thanks for writing in! This bundle will be back in stock tomorrow!
All the best,
Lili
I’d love some color advice for this scarf as I’d like to do it in Salt Water Taffy (Novella) but don’t trust my computer screen for color accuracy in selecting a complementary color in Tussock; I’m thinking either Nickle Blue or Partly Cloudy Blue. What do you think? Or something else entirely? Thanks muchly.
Hi Brit,
Thank you for writing in! I think Partly Cloudy Blue would look great with Saltwater Taffy! The blues are a bit closer in color and should pair together wonderfully!
All the best,
Gavriella
I really love the self striping Novella/Tussock yarns. Would it be a good choice for a baby blanket and would you have a pattern to suggest to use with this yarn?
Hi Amy,
Thank you for writing in! I think these yarns would look wonderful used in our Confetti Blanket pattern or even our Slipped Garter Blanket!
Happy making,
Gavriella
Can you tell me how much I would need for the Confetti Blanket?
I love that one.
I’d be happy to! For the confetti blanket you will need the following:
Main Color (MC): approximately 870 total yards required.
Contrast Color 1 (CC1): approximately 575 total yards required.
Contrast Color 2 (CC2): approximately 295 total yards required.
For this pattern, I would recommend only holding one strand of the tussock throughout for a total of 3 strands at a time.
I hope this helps!
Happy making!
What’s the best join for this yarn?
Hi Melissa,
You can join new balls of yarn in the same way you would a solid color yarn and just keep knitting. This will blend in nicely with the added touch of the mohair halo.
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Do you have photos of any other combinations than the one above used to make this stunning scarf? Thanks.
Hi Karen,
Thank you for writing in! I’m afraid we don’t have photos of the other color combinations knit up fully but you can see an example of each Novella color way knit up directly on the product page. This can help you get a better idea of how each one stripes. I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I am excited to start knitting this wrap! Question…when it says at the beginning to simply cut the yarn then join the new yarn after 2 inches..will it unravel over time? You just cut it? Thanks!
Hi Teresa,
We are thrilled to hear you will be making this project! Each time you cut your yarn, you will want to leave at least a 6-inch tail to weave in at the end. This way your project does not unravel.
Happy making,
Gavriella
