Where Does The Name “Sport Weight” Come From?

Many yarn terms have somewhat enigmatic origins, and sport weight is no exception. The name originates from the term “sportswear,” though the meaning was quite different from how we use the word today. Sportswear arose in the early 20th century to refer to garments that straddled the line between casual and formal wear, for relaxed social occasions, outdoor activities, and running errands—think knit twinsets, polos, and lightweight sweaters. So, sport-weight yarns are named for the light, breathable yarns those garments would have been made with… But of course, you can knit just about anything you want with a sport-weight yarn!

Is Sport-Weight Yarn The Same As Baby-Weight Yarn?

Sport-weight yarn is sometimes called baby-weight yarn or simply baby yarn, a marketing term you’ll often find in mid-century patterns from the US and UK. But calling “baby” a weight doesn’t quite make sense… After all, baby garments, blankets, and accessories can be knit with any yarn weight! Still, sport-weight yarn is wonderful for baby knits (more on that later!), and our soft Novella, machine-washable Cotton Pure, and durable Daily Wool Sport yarns are all sport-weight yarns that are especially lovely for babies.

Understanding Yarn Weight

Before getting deeper into the specifics of sport-weight yarns, let’s take a step back to talk about the system of yarn weights in general. Yarn weight indicates approximately how thick a yarn is and is grouped into categories ranging from finest lace weight to thickest jumbo weight. These categories are a starting point when you’re trying to find yarn that will work with your chosen pattern or knitting needles. Sport weight falls on the finer side of the spectrum, right between lighter fingering-weight yarn and slightly thicker light worsted/DK-weight yarn.

Still, it’s important to remember that these categories are flexible ranges rather than rigid definitions, and there’s no substitute for actually knitting with a yarn to find the one that works for you and your project. Gauge + Yarn Weight

Gauge is the key to understanding yarn weight, usually measured by how many stitches you knit over 1 or 4 inches. Yarn weights are defined by the gauge they typically knit up at (again, sport-weight yarns are 6-6.5 stitches per inch). Because every knitter’s tension is a little different, you may need different needles than another knitter (or yarn label!) to get the same gauge, and you might prefer a denser or looser gauge depending on your project. There’s always going to be wiggle room here!

When matching a yarn to a pattern, start by looking at the pattern’s recommended yarn weight. A sport-weight yarn will usually be the easiest match for a sport-weight pattern, but fingering-weight or DK-weight yarns can work as well! How Many Yards In A Skein Of Sport-Weight Yarn?

The yardage of a ball or skein of sport-weight yarn can vary quite a bit depending on the fiber content and how the yarn is spun. Heavier fibers like cotton and densely spun yarns tend to have less yardage per gram, while yarns with loftier spins and lightweight fibers like cashmere offer more.
