Continue ShoppingHickory Shawl
An absorbing knit that will delight you from root to branch, our Hickory Shawl pattern is traced all over with a bark-like texture of zig-zagging grooves and ridges, every stitch etched with striking clarity thanks to Plein Air’s exceptional stitch definition.

You knit the Hickory Shawl from tip to tip, working through four different chevron-based stitch patterns built entirely from knits and purls. With charts as well as written instructions, you can follow whichever path you prefer. Each stitch pattern appears twice, with an intentionally asymmetric layout for an organic, freeform grace. The finished Shawl lays remarkably flat, its fabric soft and supple but rooted.

A mix of 67% merino wool and 33% organically grown cotton, Plein Air has the smooth, velvety touch of finely sanded heartwood, combined with a tidy spin and gentle elasticity to hold texture beautifully, rendering every nook and cranny in sharp relief. It’s the kind of yarn that makes you slow down just to admire your stitches, and its robust DK weight is not too thick and not too thin—comfortable to wear whether leaves are falling or budding!

Each of Plein Air’s colors, including this rich Elk Brown, has a gorgeous heathered quality that comes from the slight difference in how the merino wool and cotton absorb dye. That depth of color adds movement and dimensionality to the natural highlights and shadows across the textured stitch patterns—like sunlight catching on bark.

Pick up three skeins of Plein Air in your favorite nature-inspired color and cast on for your Hickory Shawl, a deeply satisfying knit with an inviting, woodsy warmth.

Materials

- 3 skeins of Purl Soho’s Plein Air, 67% merino wool and 33% organically grown cotton. Each skein of this light worsted/DK-weight yarn is 218 yards/ 100 grams; approximately 654 total yards required. We used the color Elk Brown.
- US 6 (4 mm), 24-inch circular knitting needles
- A stitch marker
NOTE: We used every last yard for our shawl! To avoid running short, be sure to check your gauge, reuse your swatch yarn, and keep tails short. Or, consider ordering an extra skein just to be sure. If you don’t end up needing it, you can return unwound yarn for a refund within 30 days of purchase, or within 6 months, for store credit. Our Return Policy has all the details!
GAUGE
19½ stitches and 31½ rows = 4 inches in Diagonal Chevron Zig Zag Increase Pattern
NOTE: For gauge swatching, we recommend following Section A of the pattern for several inches, then putting your stitches on scrap yarn or stitch holders to block and measure the piece (don’t cut the yarn to avoid extra ends to weave in).

Confused.
Only use repeated sections once
Don’t repeat at all?
Repeat each repeated section once?
There are repeats in most lines from 17-32.
???
Then do we actually repeat 17-32 four times?
Not totally clear. Please help. Thanks
Hi Anna!
Thanks so much for writing in with your question! I can see how this could be a bit tricky, and I’m happy to help clear up some confusion! You’re doing great so far!
This can be explained a little bit like a nesting doll… There’s a repeat within a repeat here, which I think may be contributing to some confusion. There’s a row repeat of Rows 17-32, but there’s also a stitch repeat within each row. For Rows 17- 32 the stitch pattern repeats are within asterisks.
An example:
Row 17 (right side): K2, *k1, p1, k1, p5, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, place marker (pm), m1L, k2. [1 stitch increased]. The *k1,p1,k1,p5* is the pattern repeat for Row 17.
When we write, “NOTE: When working Rows 17–32 for the first time, you will only work the repeated section once,” what we mean is that the repeat within those asterisks will only be repeated once for the first go-through of Rows 17-32. This is because the shawl is still too small to have multiple repeats across the rows. As you repeat rows 17-32 more, you’ll also find you repeat the stitch pattern more because the stitch count has increased.
I so hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!
Happy knitting!

Please can you do a video recording of what you explain above

I would love to direct you towards a tutorial, is there a specific skill you’re looking to master? We have tutorials for reading charts, which might be helpful for pattern. If you would like to schedule a 1-on-1 Help Session, we’d be happy to help you work through any concerns you might have!

‘Love this pattern. I think you have a mistake on Chart H. There are two slip stitches in row 2 and 4 of the repeat. But the written copy says to purl the whole row with only a slip at the beginning and the end.
Hi Jan!

We’ve gone ahead and updated the chart and we’re so grateful for you bringing this to our attention. I hope you continue to enjoy the project!
Happy knitting!
