Embark on a peaceful, carefree knitting journey with our Gradient Drift Blanket pattern. The shifting hues of our Nine-Note Bundle set you happily adrift on a sea of flowing colors, while stripes of Note mark the rhythm of each passing wave—all in the softest, most beautiful yarn you can imagine.

To make this beginner-friendly blanket, you knit through each color of a radiant Nine-Note Bundle, moving from light to dark and alternating with a single color of Note. The changing colors glow between the wide solid bands, creating a fascinating sense of depth and movement.

The Gradient Drift Blanket is all garter stitch, which means it’s the easiest knitting possible—all you have to do is keep happily knitting and wait for the next gorgeous color. Note and our Nine-Note Bundle are the very same irresistible yarn, offered both as individual 100-gram skeins and as gradients of nine 50-gram skeins, each with its own distinct palette of colors.

You’ll fall for this yarn as soon as it’s in your hands—a soft mix of extra-fine merino wool and silky baby alpaca with a smooth touch that feels wonderful on your needles. A multi-ply structure adds beautiful bounce and body, making this round, DK-weight yarn a true joy to knit.

Pick your favorite Nine-Note Bundle—from bright Penny to mysterious Tidewater—and pair it with six 100-gram skeins of Note to knit your Gradient Drift Blanket. Then cast on and let the rolling waves of color carry you along from one stripe to the next!

Materials

- Yarn A: 1 of Purl Soho’s Nine-Note Bundles. One bundle includes 9 skeins of 80% extra fine merino wool and 20% baby alpaca yarn. Each bundle is 900 yards/ 450 grams; approximately 725 total yards required. We used Tidewater for one blanket, and Penny for the other.
- Yarn B: 6 skeins of Purl Soho’s Note, 80% extra fine merino wool and 20% baby alpaca yarn. Each skein is 200 yards/ 100 grams; approximately 1,200 total yards required. We used Dark Denim with Tidewater, and Purple Heath with Penny.
- US 6 (4 mm), 32- or 40-inch circular knitting needles
NOTE: We used every last yard of Yarn B for our blankets! To avoid running short, be sure to check your gauge, reuse your swatch yarn, and keep tails short. Or, consider ordering an extra skein of Yarn B. If you don’t end up needing it, you can return unwound yarn for a refund within 30 days of purchase, or within 6 months, for store credit. Our Return Policy has all the details!

GARTER RIDGE
A “garter ridge” equals two rows of garter stitch. It looks like a prominent horizontal ridge and is an easy way to count rows.
YARN A COLOR SEQUENCE
Start with the lightest color skein of the Nine-Note Bundle (Yarn A), then use the next darkest color, and so on through the gradient to the darkest color.
PATTERN
With Yarn A (using the lightest color skein, see Notes), cast on 200 stitches. We used a Long Tail Cast On.
NOTE: Place a removable stitch marker or piece of scrap yarn on next row to indicate the right side.
*With Yarn A, knit every row until there are 10 garter ridges on right side, beginning with a right-side row and ending with a wrong-side row.
Cut Yarn A.
With Yarn B, knit every row until there are 18 garter ridges on right side, beginning with a right-side row and ending with a wrong-side row.
Cut Yarn B.
Repeat from * 7 more times, using a new skein of Yarn A each time, until darkest color skein of Yarn A remains.
With Yarn A, knit every row until there are 9 garter ridges on right side, beginning and ending with a right-side row.
FINISHING
With wrong side facing you, loosely bind off knitwise.
Weave in all ends and gently wet block.

This is beautiful! Is there a simple way to adapt the pattern to crochet?
Hi Danielle,
Thanks so much for writing in with your question today! I’m so glad you love the Gradient Drift Blanket as much as we do!
Unfortunately, I don’t have the resources available to rework this pattern into a crochet pattern. However, we do have some lovely crochet blankets available… the Super Easy Baby Blanket or the Vintage Chevron Blanket. There are tons more crochet patterns for you to explore, as well.
If you do choose to adapt this pattern to crochet yourself, please remember crochet tends to use at least 30% more yarn than knitting.
I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!
Happy crafting!

Thanks so much! The tip about the 30% more yarn is very helpful.
I’m so glad to hear that!
Happy crocheting, Danielle!

Can I just use the 9 note bundle and follow this blanket pattern? Eliminate the separate stripe color?
Hi Diane!
Thanks so much for writing in with your question. I am so glad you’re interested in knitting the Gradient Drift Blanket!
You could definitely choose to eliminate the separate stripe color, just please be aware the blanket will be around half the size.
I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!

What color combinations are used for the blankets in these photos? Specifically, what color of Note color was used for the 9-bundle with Penny colors?
Hi Ginger!
Thanks so much for writing in with your question! It looks like the color combined with Penny was Purple Heath.
I so hope this helps, please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!

I came here to ask about suggestions for other color combos too. I think these seem to be both nine note colorways in some cases vs a nine note set and a note color? thank you!
Hi Melena!
Thanks so much for writing in! I’m so glad the Gradient Drift Blanket caught your eye!
Thanks for letting me know! To pair Note skeins and Nine Note Bundles (respectively) here are some pairings for you:
Chestnut Red and Juniper
Kiln Red and Apple
Fresh Nutmeg and Dragonfruit
Golden Wheat and Pomelo
Fresh Pickle and Beautyberry
Raw Sienna and Bluegrass
Vintage Celadon and Penny
Fresh Fig and Pomelo
I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions.

It says to use 32″ or 40″ circular needles. Which size is best if I am using the exact Purl Soho yarn specified in the pattern?
Hi Mary!
Thanks so much for writing in with your question! I’m so glad Gradient Drift Blanket caught your eye!
It looks like it’s more a matter of preference for this blanket! Your stitches will have a little more room on the 40″, but the 32″ will also work! There is no point where you should need to change to larger circumference needles etc., and there are no size options requiring different size length needles. So you should be ready to knit on either size!
I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!

Hello,
I love the Bluegrass 9 note but I’m having a hard time picking the Note yarn. Would the dark denim or the Stillwater blue be pretty? I even wondered about one of the greens? I’m not crazy about the raw sienna or penny, but I’m really struggling.
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Hi Rob!
Thanks so much for reaching out with this question. I’m so glad you love your Nine Note Bundle in Bluegrass! I totally understand that the previously suggested combination with Raw Sienna or Penny might not work for everyone, and I’m happy to help consider these color options with you.
I think both Note in Dark Denim and Stillwater Blue would look lovely with the Bluegrass bundle. I also think Fresh Pickle would look really nice and give a beautiful earth inspired vibe. Fresh Fig and Fresh Nutmeg would also both work well… and True Turquoise would be a really interesting combination.
I hope this helps! Of courser, please feel free to reach out with any other questions.
Happy knitting!

Hi Hilary,
Thank you so much for your suggestions! I wish I had stuck with my original thought and gone with the fresh pickle (or waited for your reply). 😊
I was afraid I’d miss out on the sale so I asked a friend and ended up selecting the grey denim. Fingers crossed it creates a soothing and pretty contrast.
Thanks again!
Hi Rob!
This should be a really beautiful, peaceful pairing. Always happy to help, and we’d love to see the results!
Happy knitting!
