Julie Hoover For Purl Soho: Addison in New Yarns + Colors

A sweater you’ll want to knit and wear again and again, we’ve updated Julie Hoover’s classic Addison pullover knitting pattern so you can make it in our merino-cotton Plein Air yarn, or, as originally designed, in our beautiful Cashmere Merino Bloom yarn.

You’ll knit your sweater in pieces that you sew together at the end. Julie chose to design this sweater with seams to lend an architectural quality to the boxy, oversized fit of this sweater… Well worth the effort! The allover seed stitch pattern also lends stability to the fabric and gives your sweater a rich yet minimal look.

Now for the really fun part… It’s time to choose your yarn! Cashmere Merino Bloom and Plein Air are both light worsted/DK-weight yarns; both have a 2-ply structure; and both contain merino wool… But they couldn’t be more different! It’s truly an exercise in understanding how fiber choice impacts your handknit garment.

Cashmere Merino Bloom, shown above in Ash Blue, is made with 75% extra fine merino wool and 25% gorgeous Mongolian cashmere. Plein Air, shown above in Tawny Owl, is made with 67% merino wool and 33% organically grown cotton. While Cashmere Merino Bloom is a true cold-weather yarn, toasty as can be, Plein Air is a favorite for three-season sweaters, with a slightly cooler touch and a pleasant weight from the heavier cotton fiber.

An Addison knit with Cashmere Merino Bloom will have a softer drape and a slight halo floating above the surface of the fabric, which you can see in the blue sweater above. An Addison knit with Plein Air will have a bit more structure and cleaner stitch definition. Both are very soft, but Cashmere Merino Bloom is more fuzzy-soft, while Plein Air is more smooth-soft.

Both yarn choices make a very beautiful Addison pullover, and both yarns are an absolute delight to knit with… You might just find you need one of each!

Materials

• 6 (6, 7, 8, 8) (9, 10, 10, 11) skeins of Purl Soho’s Plein Air, 67% merino wool and 33% organically grown cotton. Each skein of this light worsted/DK-weight yarn is 218 yards; approximately 1005 (1100, 1255, 1375, 1550) (1680, 1780, 1875, 1995) yards required. We used the color Tawny Owl.

OR

• 6 (6, 7, 8, 8) (9, 10, 10, 11) skeins of Purl Soho’s Cashmere Merino Bloom, 75% extra fine merino wool and 25% cashmere. Each skein of this light worsted/DK-weight yarn is 218 yards/ 100 grams; approximately 1135 (1240, 1415, 1555, 1750) (1900, 2010, 2120, 2250) yards required. We used the color Ash Blue.

You will also need…

• US 7 (4.5 mm), 16-inch circular knitting needles
• US 7, 24-, 32- or 40-inch circular needles, depending on size
• US 6 (4 mm), 16-inch circular needles
• A stitch marker
• Removable stitch markers
• Stitch holders or scrap yarn
• Blocking wires and T-pins (optional but recommended)
• An Addison PDF

GAUGE

17 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches in Seed Stitch, using larger needles

NOTE: If using Cashmere Merino Bloom, for best results, dry your gauge swatch hanging along the cast-on or bind-off edge (rather than flat). This yarn tends to relax and grow, so hanging your swatch will help determine a more accurate gauge.

To fit actual chest circumference of 32–34 (35–37, 39–41, 43–45, 47–49) (50–52, 54–56, 58–60, 62–64) inches with approximately 9–11 inches of ease

• Finished Chest Circumference: 42½ (46, 50, 53½, 57½) (61, 65, 68½, 72½) inches
• Finished Length from Shoulder to Bottom Edge: 25¼ (25¾, 27¾, 28½, 30½) (31¼, 31½, 31¾, 32¼) inches
• Finished Length from Underarm to Bottom Edge: 15 (15, 16, 16, 17) (17, 17, 17, 17) inches
• Finished Length from Underarm to Cuff: 12½ inches
