Our Fox Trail Hat + Mittens pattern invites you to wander nature’s path, its meandering cables like the tracks of forest animals across untouched snow. Cast on with our new Wild Donegal, a hearty and robust Irish tweed yarn full of untamed spirit, ready to weather whatever trails you may roam!

A very simple, graphic cable pattern makes for easy, satisfying knitting as you watch your stitches zig and zag, working either from a chart or written instructions. In the hat pattern, sized for babies through adults, a clever trick puts the right side of the cast on to the outside when you fold the brim up. The meandering tracks come together at the crown, like paths meeting at the heart of the forest.

The mittens, available in kid through adult sizes, have the same wandering cable pattern worked along their backs, with a reverse stockinette palm and a ribbed cuff that matches the hat. When you get to the thumb, you simply work a few stitches with scrap yarn and keep knitting. After you finish the rest of the mitten, you remove the scrap yarn, grab those live stitches, then knit the thumb in the round… So easy, and there are step-by-step photos right in the pattern!

Wild Donegal is a chunky-weight tweed yarn made by one of County Donegal’s last traditional mills and is spun with the same handcrafted care that has defined this region’s yarns for generations. 100% merino wool, this yarn has an appealing, earthy quality, a pleasantly toothy feel, and a firm hand that softens after washing, getting even more supple and inviting with every adventure!

Every color of Wild Donegal, including captivating Heirloom White and warm Copper Spice, is built from a heathered base flecked with contrasting speckles of fiber, known as “burrs.” These tiny bursts of color dance across each stitch, layering lively texture and a sense of storied tradition that makes every stitch wildly beautiful!

You just need a skein or two of Wild Donegal for the hat, and another skein or two for a pair of mittens, depending on the size you’re making. Forge a path with 26 wonderfully wild colors and cast on for your own Fox Trail Hat + Mittens!

Is gauge as given measured before or after blocking? I worried about thumb width but now I see you also included gauge for thumb so should be perfect. Can’t seem to find a chart or a link for fox 🦊 trails. Lots of scrolling !
Hi Mary,
Thank you for asking! The gauge in this pattern is measured after blocking and you can find the link to the Fox Trail Hat + Mittens Charts in the “Charts” section under “Notes”! I have linked that for you in this comment, too.
Please let us know if you have any other questions! Wishing you all the happy knitting!
Kindly,
Cat
Well Done!
Hi Janice,
Thank you so much for your kind words! We hope you give this pattern a try!
All the best,
Cat
Hi- I love the pattern and yarn, but the style turned out taller than is the recipient’s pleasure, it was the small kid size, so I decided to remove the second cable section all together and then went to the crown. It worked okay for this one but I’m wondering if a better way to decrease the height would be to just do a couple inches of stocking net after the rib, since it’s folded over and won’t show. What do you think? Same difference I guess?
Second question, do you suggest just a spray wet block and not a sweater soap soak? Thank you!
Hi Linda,
Thank you for writing in! One thing you could do would be to shorten the ribbed brim. From there I would proceed exactly as you have to a shortened body section. I hope this helps but please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you!
All the best,
Gavriella
Would it be possible to include the level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) in the pattern description? Thank you!
Hi Michelle,
Thank you for asking! We don’t tend to rate the difficulty of our patterns because we don’t want to discourage people from stretching a little beyond their current abilities… It’s how we all become better knitters! But we are, of course, happy to answer this question when it comes up and to describe the skills involved. In this case, if you’re concerned you’ll be caught in deep waters, I recommend starting with the hat, which is easier than the mittens, and once you’ve conquered the hat, you will be ready to try the mittens and add the challenge of a thumb hole! For the hat, you’ll need to know (or learn!) how to knit in the round, follow a knitting pattern, make cables, and work decreases. We have tutorials for all of these skills to help you along, and we’re also here to answer any questions that may come up! And finally, to actually answer your question, I’d say the hat is an advanced beginner or intermediate level, and the mittens are solidly intermediate. We’d love to hear how you do… Keep us posted!
Best,
Whitney
Thank you- I’ll try that on the second hat.
And what about blocking, is it better to soak or just spray or steam block?
You are very welcome! Either method works fine but I personally always prefer a soak to really help even out my stitches.
Hello –
I would like to knit the Fox Trail Hat with some of my stash. Seems that the lovely yarn I have, which is bulky, calls for needles from 9 to 11. What number of stitches are needed for a cast on for an adult Med and an adult Large? What would the pattern instructions for the increases and decreases be? I would qualify myself as a trepidatious advanced beginner.
Thank you for your help.
Best, Diane
Hi Diane!
Thank you for your question! The yarn used in the original Fox Trail Hat, Wild Donegal, is also a chunky-to-bulky weight. Its gauge is around 3.5–4 stitches per inch on a US 7–10.5 needle, but the pattern intentionally uses a US 6 to tighten the fabric to about 4.8 stitches per inch.
Because of that, the easiest path is to make a small swatch with your yarn using the original pattern needle size and see how close you can get to the pattern’s gauge. If you’re able to match it (or get very close), you won’t need to make any adjustments, simply following the pattern as written including all increases and decreases.
Warmly,
Megan
Hi there, could I make that lovely pattern with alpaca wool (156g / 94m) that is asking for needles 6-8 mm?
Thank you for your time.
Sylvie
Hi Sylvie!
Thank you so much for your question! Your alpaca yarn sounds lovely, and the gauge seems very close to what this pattern calls for. I’d recommend knitting a quick gauge swatch with the needle size in the pattern, then adjusting up or down if needed.
Warmly,
Megan
Thank you Megan! I’ll do.
Other suggested yarns? Worsted weight, DK, Sport?
Hi Pricilla!
Thank you for your question! If you’re looking for other yarn options in similar weights, Till is a lovely wool with a wide palette of beautifully subtle, heathered colors, and Partridge Superwash is a great choice if you’re looking for a machine washable option. Both would knit up nicely in place of the original yarn. If you’d like more suggestions or help adjusting gauge for other weight yarns, we’re happy to help!
Warmly,
Megan
Why can’t I find the chart?
Hi Liz!
Thanks for writing in! You can find the PDF for the Fox Trail Hat + Mittens Charts at the bottom of the Charts section, but I’ve linked it here as well just in case!
Happy knitting!
Megan
That’s great! Thank you.
My problem has been that when I send the pdf file to KnitCompanion, the blue link to the chart doesn’t work. I’ve also tried (and failed) doing that little thing on an iPad where you send the file to Print, expand one of the thumbnails on the left side of the screen, and then select the option to open in KnitCompanion. In this case, the “link” to the chart doesn’t even show up as a link.
Does anyone know what, if anything, I’m doing wrong?
Hmm, I can’t say what’s going on for sure since I’m not familiar with KnitCompanion and its syncing capabilities… Have you tried contacting their support team yet? If they need a specific file format, that’s something we can help you with! Just keep us posted. We can also try troubleshooting further over email at [email protected] if needed!
All the best,

Hi! I gifted my husband the Fox Trail hat which he loved, and which came out beautifully. Very fun to knit. Thank you for the free pattern.
One question: the hat turned out on the large side, which is fine, though I wonder if there’s a safe and effective way to try shrinking it a little bit?? A slightly snugger fit for my husband would make the hat even better. I used the Wild Donegal yarn.
Many thanks!
Hi Kristen!
Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re thrilled your husband loves his Fox Trail Hat!
Since you used Wild Donegal, we’d be cautious about trying to intentionally shrink it. Wet blocking, heat, or agitation can be unpredictable and could felt or distort the fabric, which we definitely don’t want after all your beautiful work!
The safest and most reliable way to get a snugger fit really is to knit another version in a smaller size (or even go down a needle size for slightly more firmness). Our hat patterns are designed with negative ease, so sizing adjustments usually give the best results.
That said, if the hat is only slightly big, sometimes a firm wet block and careful reshaping can help it relax just a touch, but it won’t dramatically change the size. I hope this helps!
Warmly,
Megan
Thank you so much for this beautiful pattern. What size hat is the model wearing?
Hi Lilli!
Thank you so much for writing in! We’re thrilled you love the pattern. The model is wearing the Adult Small/Medium size shown in the photos.
Warmly,
Megan
