Tapestry Wrap
A wearable work of handknitted art, our Tapestry Wrap pattern celebrates Linen Quill’s rich and complex colors in a striking, woven-inspired design.

Holding two strands of this fingering-weight yarn together and knitting with only one color per row, you knit this wrap with slip stitch colorwork. A much easier-than-it-looks technique, you only need a couple of basic projects under your belt before you cast on for a Tapestry Wrap. What a powerful feeling of accomplishment you’ll have when you find out just what you’re capable of!

At the wrap’s two ends, you create interlocking blocks of dimensional color, and in between, you stripe two closely related colors, creating a captivating depth that rewards closer inspection.

The openwork fringe edging might look intricate, but it’s surprisingly easy to create using simple macrame knots. Detailed photos in the pattern walk you through every step!

Linen Quill’s hearty beauty makes it a perfect match for this rustic yet elegant wrap. A mix of springy and durable highland wool, soft long-fiber alpaca, and natural linen makes for a warm and gracious fabric that drapes beautifully when you pull it close around your body.

The way the linen takes up dye differently than the animal fibers brings marvelous depth to Linen Quill’s vast palette. You have 70 colors to choose from, including 9 brand-new ones! In our Tapestry Wrap, new Hazelnut Brown mingles with perennial favorite Kiln Red, with pops of new Light Cerulean and two natural pinks at the ends. You can get all you need to make your own wrap with our Tapestry Wrap Bundle… Pick up the Sequoia palette we used or choose one of our other gorgeous bundles!

Of course, you can also have a wildly creative time creating your own five-color palette from Linen Quill’s wild and wonderful world of color. You’ll find all of nature’s bounty represented… Earth, wind, fire, and water!

Once the last knot on the fringe is tied, you’ll want to put this vivid tapestry on display! Your Tapestry Wrap is bound to become a lasting testament of what you can create, for years and generations to come.

NOTES
YARN DOUBLED
Throughout this pattern, you will work with the yarn doubled, pulling two strands of the same color. For the Main Color, we recommend pulling one strand from two balls. For the Contrast Colors, either pull from the inside and outside of the ball at the same time, or wind your skein into two balls and pull a strand from each.
STITCH MULTIPLE
This pattern works over a multiple of 8 plus 5 stitches. (Note that the stitch patterns in each section may work over different stitch multiples, but the wrap as a whole works over this multiple.)
SLIP STITCHES
Slip all slip stitches purlwise, unless instructed otherwise.
Slip stitches with yarn in back on right-side rows and with yarn in front on wrong-side rows.
CARRYING YARN
When switching yarns, be sure to carry the old yarn up the selvage in front of the new yarn.

With MC and CC1, beginning with the Set-Up Row, repeat 1×1 Slip Stitch Section.
With MC, bind off all stitches knitwise.
FINISHING
Weave in all ends and gently wet block wrong-side down, pinning if necessary to mitigate curling along the selvage edges.
MACRAME FRINGE
ADD FRINGE
Cut three 24-inch strands of MC and three 24-inch strands of CC1.
Orient piece with right side facing you and cast-on edge at the bottom, and insert crochet hook from wrong side of work to right side, into first CC1 stripe at bottom right corner of cast-on edge. Holding the MC and CC1 strands together, fold the six strands in half, and use a crochet hook to grab the folded midpoint and pull it through to the wrong side of the work, forming a loop. Pass the strands’ tails through the loop and pull gently to tighten.
Repeat along the whole edge, adding Fringe to every 4th CC1 stripe, for a total of 8 (16) Fringes.
Repeat along the bind-off edge.
WORK MACRAME
Orient piece with right side facing you and cast-on edge at the bottom. Beginning with the Fringe in the bottom right corner and the one directly to its left…
Split each Fringe in half with 3 strands of MC and 3 strands of CC1 per half.
Make a square knot as follows…
Step 1 (above, left): Bring the left group of strands over the two center groups and underneath the right group, creating a “4” shape.
Step 2 (above, right): Bring the right group under the two center groups, then up through the loop between the left and center groups (the center of the “4”).

Gently tighten the knot, shown above.
Step 3 (above, left): Bring the right group over the center groups and behind the left group, creating a “P” shape.
Step 4 (above, right): Bring the left group behind the center groups, then up through the loop between the center and right groups (the center of the “P”).

Gently tighten to complete the square knot.
Repeat Steps 1–4 to create a square knot with the remaining 3 (7) sets of two adjacent fringes. [8 square knots total]

Omitting leftmost and rightmost Fringes, create a second row of square knots. Then, including leftmost and rightmost Fringe, create a third row of square knots. To complete, repeat Steps 1 and 2 for each knot of last row. [23 square knots total + 8 half-square knots]
Repeat along bind-off edge. Trim all Fringe to 7½ inches, and you’re done!

This pattern is so gorgeous! I would love to make a throw version if you guys were ever able to convert the pattern to that!
Hi Stevie,
That sounds like a great idea and I will be sure to pass this along to our design team!
All the best,
Gavriella
Could you use a dk yarn to make this?
Hi Ines,
Thanks for asking! We wouldn’t recommend DK yarn as it would make the fabric quite dense. Any fingering weight yarn would be the best selection for this pattern but please let me know if you have any questions!
All the best,
Gavriella
Love this. I would really like to make this into an Afghan. I just need help figuring out how much of the main color and CC1 I should buy if you have any suggestions
Can’t wait to try !
Hi Lori,
Thanks for writing in, and I’m happy to help! First though, I’ll need to know the dimensions (length and width) you’re aiming for. Then I can do the calculations for the new yardage!
All the best,
Lili
I’m thinking an Afghan thats 44x 60. Let me know what you think. Thanks
Great, thanks for letting me know! You’ll need the following number of skeins of Linen Quill for that size blanket:
MC: 8 skeins
CC1: 6 skeins
CC2: 1 skein
CC3: 1 skein
CC4: 1 skein
All the best,
Lili
Did I get a pattern when I purchased my kit? I can’t find it.
Thank you

Best,

I have a question about joining the contrast colors. After the cast on, on Row 1, when you say slip 2 with CC1, I’m assuming that you are slipping 2 stitches of the main color. You then proceed to knit with CC1? Thanks in advance for your answer. I just purchased the kit!
Hi Denise,
Yes, that’s correct! Since the Set-Up Row was done all in the MC, any slipped stitches on the following row (Row 1) will be MC stitches. You begin knitting with CC1 on the third stitch!
All the best,
Lili
