Soft Stripes Wrap
With Novella’s mesmerizing pools of color under a wash of glowing tussock, our Soft Stripes Wrap tells a story… One of beauty, inspiration, and the pleasure of simple knitting.
You knit this wrap with our Soft Stripes Wrap Bundle, all in easy stockinette, holding two strands throughout, just Tussock on the ends and Tussock with Novella for the rest.
This gorgeous swath of fabric is all about the yarn. The shifting colors of self-striping Novella will keep you enraptured. The colors stripe and blend, flowing into one another as you anticipate what comes next.
And you’ll love the gentle watercolor-y beauty Tussock adds. Its lustrous color is vibrant on the ends and merges with Novella’s dynamic hues in the middle, bringing the pieces of the tale together.
The fibers of these two yarns are an exquisite mix. They both have the strength and radiance of mulberry silk, while Novella adds extra fine merino for bounce and body, and Tussock’s super fine kid mohair lends a gorgeous halo to the fabric’s surface. Altogether, an incredibly soft and lovely combination.
Our wrap pairs Tussock’s Bright Thistle with Novella’s vibrant Goji Berry, but find the two that tell your story… You have nine Soft Stripes Wrap Bundles to choose from!

- Yarn B: 4 (7) balls of Purl Soho’s Novella, 92% extra fine merino and 8% mulberry silk. Each ball is 142 yards/ 50 grams; approximately 505 (995) total yards required. We used the color Gogi Berry.

NOTES
STITCH MULTIPLE
This project works over any number of stitches.
YARN DOUBLED
For the first and last 2 inches of this pattern, you will hold two strands of Yarn A (Tussock) together. Either pull from two separate balls for this, or pull from the inside and outside of one ball.
For the rest of the piece, you will hold one strand of Yarn A (Tussock) together with one strand of Yarn B (Novella).
PATTERN
With two strands of Yarn A held together (see Notes), loosely cast on 38 (76) stitches. We used a basic Long Tail Cast On.
Row 1 (wrong side): K1, p1, k1, purl to last three stitches, k1, p1, k1.
Row 2 (right side): K2, p1, knit to last three stitches, p1, k2.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures approximately 2 inches from cast-on edge.
Cut one strand of Yarn A and join Yarn B.
Holding Yarn A and Yarn B together, continue in pattern until piece measures 68 inches from cast-on edge, or if using Novella, until you have used the entirety of Yarn B.
Cut Yarn B and join another strand of Yarn A.
With two strands of Yarn A held together, continue in pattern for approximately 2 inches, ending with a wrong-side row.
With right side facing you, bind off loosely knitwise.
FINISHING
Weave in all ends and gently wet block.
Good morning! I’ve knit with Tussock before and love it but Novella is new to me. Just how heavy is this wrap when knit? I’m looking for something to either wear in the spring or to be able to take to the office in the summer if the A/C is on. Would this wrap be too heavy for that? Thanks!
Hi Lynn,
This would be the perfect springtime scarf! Novella is a sportweight yarn, so while it will keep you warm, it won’t be overwhelmingly heavy. I’d say this pattern provides just the right balance of coziness to be worn in multiple seasons.
All the best,
Lili
Hi!
I’m wondering if you think this combination of yarns would be appropriate to knit a beautiful afghan/blanket. If so, how many bundles do you think I would need to make a nice size one?
Thanks so much,
Nita
Hi Nita,
Thanks for writing in, and I think these yarns would make a lovely blanket! To make a throw-size blanket of approximately 56 by 42 inches, you will likely need 7 skeins of Tussock and 15 skeins of Novella. Hope this helps, and please let us know how your project turns out!
All the best,
Lili
Thanks so much! Could you please tell me how many stitches you would cast on to get that size blanket?
Best,
Nita
Hi Nita,
You will need to cast on 266 stitches. I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I’d appreciate some color advice for your lovely Soft Stripes Wrap. I have three skeins of Tussock in Tea Rose that I would like to use. Do you think Novella in either Farmers Market or Flower Patch would work with the Tea Rose Tussock? If not, do you have other suggestions?
Thanks so much!
Hi Linda,
Thank you for writing in! What fun colors you have chosen! Tea Rose will look absolutely stunning paired with Farmer’s Market! The peachy shades will complement each other very well!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Hey Guys
I just finished the Sleeve scarf in Speckled Hen yarn. Would like to do this Scarf pattern in color pictured. I see it is out of stock. Do you have any idea when it will be back for sale? The colors are so beautiful.
Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for writing in! We are currently expecting to have Novella in the color Goji Berry back in stock in early May. We’re so sorry for the delay and are anxious to see it back too!
If that’s not too late for you, we’d recommend signing up to be notified when it returns by going to the product page (https://www.purlsoho.com/novella.html), selecting Goji Berry, and entering your email address. You can repeat this step for any other color you’re interested in as well. This way, you’ll be among the first to know!
I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any other questions.
All the best,
Gavriella
I have several skeins of Tussock in “Tawny Dune.” (I don’t believe that color is offered on your website anymore. It’s been several years since I purchased it.) Anyway, was just wondering if you think it would work to sub out “Tawny Dune” for “Golden Lichen” with the “Desert Ridge” novella for a Soft Stripes Wrap. I love the look of the pattern. Thanks so much for all you guys do! Best, Shara
Hi Shara,
Thank you for writing in! That color combination sounds wonderful! We recommend knitting a small gauge swatch with your selected colors just to be sure you are happy with the fabric and the result of your combination. That way you can be sure you will not have to undo all of your hard work in the case that you don’t enjoy the way the colors work up together. I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
When I switch from two strands of Tussock to one strand of each yarn, should the change be made on a right or wrong side row?
Thank you.
Hi there,
Thank you for writing in! We recommend changing colors on the right side for the smoothest transition of colors! I hope this helps but please let us know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Whenever I knit in stockinette, it always curls so badly. Is there a border I could add or another stitch pattern that I could knit this in that would look good with this yarn?
Hi Emily,
Thank you for writing in! That sounds like a wonderful idea! I think adding either a seed stitch, ribbed, or garter stitch border would work wonderfully for this pattern to keep those edges from curling as much. To do this you will want to add an odd number to either side for a simple seed stitch or an even number for ribbing. Garter stitch is pretty flexible so any number of additional stitches would work. I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
