Cashmere Ombré Wrap
We recently sat down with, Jade Sapphire, our favorite cashmere experts, to dream up the ultimate knitting project. We knew that Jade Sapphire had the yarn covered with the purest, softest Mongolian cashmere we know of, as well as the unique capability to hand dye spectacular color. And on our end, we knew that the very best thing to do with the very best cashmere is cuddle and so we designed the most generous and gorgeous wrap we could imagine. The resulting collaboration is this: our Cashmere Ombré Wrap.

We chose four of the colors that are igniting our imaginations this season and decided that they would be most beautiful on a slowly ascending color scale. Jade Sapphire was perfectly equipped to create the real ombré we imagined, one where each skein is truly hand dyed one shade lighter than the one before it. In the end, eight skeins of sumptuous 4 Ply Cashmere form an octave, traveling from a deep, rich bass note up to a delicate, light treble tone. The effect is operatic: full of drama, lyricism, and ravishing beauty!
Yarn lovers, if you adore the yarn used in this project, you’ll love exploring all of our other yarn collections! Discover over 45 thoughtfully designed yarns in nearly every natural fiber and in every spectacular color you can imagine. Only available here at Purl Soho’s online yarn store, where every skein is created with care and your creativity in mind!

Each Kit includes…
- 8 skeins of Jade Sapphire’s 4 Ply 100% Mongolian cashmere, hand dyed exclusively for Purl Soho and available only in this kit. Each skein is 200 yards/ 100 grams; approximately 1,600 yards required.(This is enough yarn for either a seed stitch or a mistake rib wrap.)
- A Purl Soho muslin project bag
- A full-color booklet with instructions for both stitch patterns
- All nestled inside in a sturdy, reusable cardboard box… Very nice!
You will also need US 3 (3.25 mm) straight or circular needles or the size needed to obtain the gauge, which is…

Seed Stitch Wrap: 25 stitches per 4 inches (unblocked)

I’m interested in the Aquamarine kit. What is the cost please in Australian dollars. Thank you
Hi Ria-
We ship to Australia a lot however, all of our prices are in US dollars so I’m afraid I don’t know exactly how much this would be in Australian dollars, it depends on the exchange rate that you bank gives when you do an international transaction.
If you need any more help with this please feel free to contact our customer service folks directly- customerservice AT purlsoho DOT com
Thank you!

Hi There! I love love this Wrap! It is beautiful! Im just not sure I can afford the price at this time. Can you recommend any other yarns that you have that I could purchase along with the pattern? I would love to get started on this beautiful wrap! Thank you so much! Lucy
Hi Lucy-
Thanks for getting in touch! Please see my response to Gwen for some great alternatives, and let us know if you have any more questions!
Molly
Could you please suggest an alternate yarn for this gorgeous wrap? Is this yarn a fingering weight? I see it is 33 st/in, size 3 needle. The cashmere is just way beyond my means. Thanks, Gwen
Thanks for your answers to questions about using a different yarn. I must be missing something, because I can’t find the total yardage used. Can you help?
Thanks!
Hi Heidi!
Each skein in the kit has 200 yards of a heavy fingering weight yarn, and the kit comes 8 skeins.
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
Does this pattern use up all the 8 skeins of yarn in the kit? Or are the 8 skeins needed for the colour gradation, and there is yarn left over?
Hi Queenie-
It basically uses all of the yarn with very little left over.
Please let us know if you have any more questions!
Molly
Does the pattern use all of the skeins of yarn? So if there were some leftover, I could just keep knitting to make it a little longer?
Hi Katherine-
There are only a few yards left over from each skein, but you could certainly knit to the end of each skein if you wanted to make it a bit longer!
Thanks!
Molly
ps- I have edited this comment- originally I thought there was more left over, I’m so sorry for any confusion!
Hi, this is gorgeous! Does the pattern require all of each skein, or is there an opportunity to get more than one project out of one kit? Thanks!
Hi Julia-
There isn’t much yarn left over, just a few yards from each skein so you won’t be able to make much with the leftovers unless it’s something really small.
Thanks so much for getting in touch!
Molly
ps- I have edited this comment- originally I thought there was more left over, I’m so sorry for any confusion!
I’m a beginner knitter, are the patterns easy enough for someone like me? I’d hate to buy such an expensive kit and not be able to do it. Also, what length needle would I need?
Thank you
Hi Kelly-
Yes, these patterns are definitely easy enough for a beginner, as long as you know how to knit and purl and how to switch between the two. It is a bit of a time commitment if you aren’t a speedy knitter yet because it’s a fairly small gauge but they yarn is really lovely to work with!
If you want to use straight needles I would recommend getting them 14-inches long. If you would like to use a circular needles I would recommend a 24-inch. To knit straight with circular needles you just knit with them as you would straight needles, switching them in your hands as you begin each row, they are just attached by a cable which holds the width of your project which makes them pretty convenient!
Please let us know if you have any more questions!
Molly
Lovely kit! Will colours be re-stocked once sold out? Or is this a one time deal? Thanks!
Hi Allison-
We hope to keep this in stock!
Thanks for your question!
Molly
Is the rectangular? Or triangular? In shaoe. It appesrs rectangular, but woul love confirmation. Thank you
Hi Colleen-
It’s rectangular. You can find the finished dimensions listed in the story above.
Thank you!
Molly
I just bought the kit in bloom. I’m so excited! The colors are beautiful!
If I want the scarf to be a little longer and a little wider should I just use a larger needle? Maybe a 4, 5, or 6?
Will knitting it in stockinette give the scarf more drape?
I am still working on my seed stitch wrap, and it’s a little stiff. It could be the yarn, I am using the madelinetosh merino for the entire piece. Or it could be my knitting. I am a beginner and I probably have a very tight grip.
The goal is to have a longer scarf with more drape. What do you suggest?
Thank you,
Chival
Hi Chival-
Thanks so much for getting in touch!
It sounds like your a tight knitter. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just means that you need to adjust your needle size to get the correct gauge (stitches per inch.) I would suggest knitting a few swatches using the yarn and a few different needle sizes. When you find the needle size that gets you the proper amount of stitches per inch you have a winner!
I would not suggest adjusting this pattern to be wider and longer than the original because I’m afraid you’ll run out of yarn. Also, it should drape very nicely if you are getting the correct gauge so there is no need to do a different stitch pattern and if you were to knit it all in stockinette the edges would curl so I wouldn’t recommend that!
Please let us know if you have any other questions!
Best-
Molly
Thank you for the reply!
I didn’t consider that changing the stitch or the needle size would greatly reduce the length of the wrap. Thank you Molly!
I would really like the wrap to be longer and wider. I don’t plan to block the wrap, as I have not been very successful with blocking. I am afraid I will end up with something much smaller than 20×68. I could purchase another kit, but I feel that doing that may be a little excessive.
I looked on the Jade Sapphire website to try and find the colors used in the kit. There are other pinks available, but I don’t know how they will work with your perfect ombre you have created for the kit. I was able to find pink petunia (070), pink panther (142), little girl pink (022), pinksicle (110), and pink peal (027).
My goal is to have a wrap that is at least 36×72.
If I do purchase another kit, would you suggest doubling each color? I could make the wrap go from dark to light, and back to dark? Using the lightest pink only once.
Thanks for your help.
Best,
Chival
Hi Chival-
It would be hard to buy extra yarn for the kit since these are custom color dyed just for this kit so they aren’t available on their own. But you could certainly buy another kit and knit each section of color to be 9-inches long (8 colors at 9 inches each = 72 inches long!). You would have yarn left over but it would be the easiest way to get it looking just like this only longer.
Thanks again for getting in touch and please let us know if you need any more help.

I was slightly shocked by the coincidence of this project appearing on the blog and it’s coincidence with my current project. I had bought five skeins of blue for the arctic shawl pattern (while editing to fit more like a scarf ), but found the weight too small and started a seed stitch infinity scarf. I have about two feet left and excited with the outcome !
Can the yarn be wound before shipping?
Hi Karen!
Yes, there is a “special instructions” section at checkout where you can write that you’d like to have it wound.
Thanks so much for getting in touch!
Molly
Hi Kimberly-
This sounds so beautiful!
We would suggest using Anzula Squishy for the warp since it’s strong and a comparable weight to the cashmere. We would estimate that you only need one skein. https://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/7124-Anzula-Squishy
Please let us know how this works out and thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Can you ship this yarn also to Europe? What are the shipping costs then?
Hi Jeannette-
Yes we can!

Thank you, and please let us know if you have any more questions!
Molly
Is there a recommended cast-on method to use for this wrap?
Hi Yuen-
We used a long tail cast on.
Thanks for your question!
Molly
I am a beginner knitter. I noticed in one of your comments that all you need to know is how to knit and purl. Is this a good project for a beginner?and how large is the finished project? Thank you.
Hi Jill-
This is a good project for a beginner but we wouldn’t recommend it as a very first project because it’s so large and the needles are fairly small. However, if you have completed a scarf (or any other project) that involved switching between knitting and purling then this project would be a good fit. The final measurements are:
Seed Stitch Wrap: Finished Dimensions: 20 x 68 inches (blocked)
Mistake Rib Wrap: Finished Dimensions: 17 x 80 inches (blocked)
(These measurements are also listed in the story above.)
Please let us know if you have any more questions! Thank you!

Hi, ladies,
Like the others, I love this beautiful scarf. However, I’m a crocheter. Can you approximate/guess/speculate how large a scarf this might be in a very loose single crochet with a largish hook? I promise I won’t hold you to it.
Joan
Hi Joan!
I’m so glad you love the Cashmere Ombre Wrap! I can’t say for certain how large the wrap will be in crochet, but I believe a common estimation is to assume that the same size garment requires 130% the amount of yarn. That means, assuming you make your crocheted wrap the same width as the seed stitch version, your wrap will come out about 52 inches long. I think it’s also important that that’s assuming a regular crochet stitch (like single crochet) and about the same hook size. If you use a larger size like you mentioned, I think it’s very possible that you can get the wrap to be the same exact size.
Thank you for asking us about this, and you’ll have to let you know how far your wrap goes!
Thomas
Hi there…
I bought one kit in bloom and was wondering if it would work to use one kit to make two kid-sized scarfs or wraps. What do you think? Thanks!
Hi Amy,
I think that would be beautiful! Just keep in mind as you re-size each one that you should have an odd number for the seed stitch, or a multiple of 4 stitches plus 3 extra for the mistake rib version. Also be sure to use only half of each skein for each!
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
Which of the two suggested stitches goes faster?
Hi there!
The mistake rib would go a little faster because there are half as many switches between knits and purls!
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
I just received my kit in Bloom but am struggling with getting the right gauge. I have gone up to needle size 6 and am still getting 5 and a quarter inches when it should be 4. I am working on the mistake rib. What do you suggest?
Hi Punum-
It sounds like you actually need to go down in needle size since your gauge needs to be smaller. I would give it a try with the US #3 needles that the pattern suggests. Please keep us posted and good luck with the project!

I have severe reactions to wool and cashmere – can you recommend any cotton yarns to obtain similar ombre results?
Thanks so much
Hi Marshalle!
I’m so sorry that you can’t wear wool or cashmere! You do need a fingering weight yarn to knit this wrap, which you can find here. We have some alpaca that might work, unless you are allergic to all animal fibers.
You could probably get away with a sport weight as well, which you can find here. We do have some cottons available in sport weight!
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
Oh my gosh,
You have so many beautiful patterns and yarn. But I really need to finish earlier purchases before I order more, and by then the beautiful yarn is gone.
Keep up the great work.
So lovely – but far too expensive. Are there alternative yarns?
Hi Heidi-
Yes, we are always happy to offer some less expensive alternatives! This will work with any fingering weight yarn! You can see a list specifics we think will work by looking at the response to “Gwen” in the comments above.
Thank you so much for getting in touch and please let us know if you have any more questions!

I’d love to make a simple stockinette sweater with this kit. Is it enough yarn to do so? medium/large – 40″ across chest. I’m thinking something I can knit on circular needles top down…
Hi Hae,
The kit has 1600 yards of fingering weight yarn. It’s very tough to say for certain whether this would be enough for a sweater, but it would certainly be a good start!
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
Hi there!
I was recently gifted the pattern for this beautiful wrap, and was hoping to make it using the Purl Soho Line Weight merino wool in the turquoise colorway since the current kit is out of stock. May I ask for your help in making sure I’m on track with the ombre effect? I thought to use to yarns in this order: black green, peacock blue, green turquoise, lichen green, desert blue or ice blue (which would you recommend?), and artemisia green.
Thank you for your help!
Emily
Hi Emily!
That colorway sounds beautiful! I would probably go with the desert blue because it’s just a little greener and will go with the rest of your colors better! I’d also consider using Dragonfly blue instead of the Green Turquoise – I think that the Green Turquoise is too green for the rest of the colors.
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
Are line weight and lace weight the same? I’m looking at the Boyfriend Hat and thinking about my stash…
Hi Heidi-
The “weight” in Line Weight yarn is part of the name of the yarn and not a technical term, the yarn itself is technically a fingering weight yarn. Lace weight is thinner than fingering so it wouldn’t be a good substitution. Hope this makes sense! Thanks for getting in touch and please let us know if you have any more questions!

I just bought this kit in Bloom but I can’t work out what UK needle size I need to knit this in seed stitch on straight needles? What is the equivalent of US #3?
I have tried 3.25mm, 3.5mm and 4mm (as that seems about right for this yarn weight) but the gauge is coming in at 3-3.5 inches per 25 stitches, rather than the recommended 4inches.
Thanks
Connie
Hi Connie!
A US size 3 is in fact 3.25mm. It sounds like your knitting tension might be a good bit tight. It is certainly okay to continue trying larger needles to get gauge. Also, I would suggest making a swatch that is larger than 25 stitches (more like 35 or 41) and measure in a few different places over 25 stitches in the middle.
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
I noted that kits are only listed for bloom and fog. Will the aquamarine kit be available again in the future or was this a one time only kit?
Hi Susan!
The Aquamarine is available now online! Click here to purchase one!
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
Do you have any suggestions for converting this to a cowl? I’m thinking of buying the kit and modifying it, sort of merging the ombré wrap with the gradient cowl pattern. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Hi Jenn-
This wounds like a great idea!
To make the gradient cowl from the cashmere ombré kit, you can cast on any number of stitches – if you want the same width as the gradient cowl, I would say cast on 70 stitches (if you are doing seed stitch). You will have enough yarn to make it wider, so any even number of stitches will work, it’s just a matter of preference. You should use whatever needles give you the correct gauge as written on the cashmere wrap pattern.
Instead of combining the different yarn colors to make each section, you should simply knit the first section with one strand of the first color. The second section will be knit with one strand of the second color, and on and on until each color is used. Then, like the gradient cowl, you will repeat the color order in reverse. Each section should measure 3 3/4 inches long (slightly longer than each section in the gradient cowl to make the length correct).
Please let me know if this isn’t what you had in mind and I can come up with another solution!
Thanks!
Gina
That’s about what I had in mind. Thank you! I see that my kit is scheduled for delivery today. Hurray!
I wanted to know if the kit was only offered during the holidays or are you going to carry it for a while? Also can I get the kit at the store ?
Hi JD-
We are still offering this kit and have not plans to discontinue it! It’s available both at the store and online.
Please let us know if you have any more questions and thanks so much for getting in touch!

I am on my last color and wondering how you suggest this should be blocked.
Thanks
Hi Punum!
I would probably suggest laying this flat and spritzing it with water to block! I don’t think I would submerge this one completely, but you can find some of our other suggestions for blocking here!
Thanks for your question!
Thomas
My Bloom kit arrived really quickly – the yarn is so soft – can’t wait to start knitting
I am having a terrible time with the seed stitch….how much would the scarf change if I changed it to the garter stitch?
Thanks,
Chival
Hi Chival-
This would look lovely in garter stitch! It will end up being a slightly different size but since it doesn’t have to fit like a sweater or a sock would you should be fine!
Thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Is the color “Ink” out of stock? Will it be re-stock?
Thanks,
Joline
Hi Joline-
Yes, it should be coming back in stock soon. Please email [email protected] if you’d like to be emailed when it’s back.
Thank you!
Molly
I’m finished with the seed stitch pattern, except I need to cast off. Did you use the traditional cast off method or something more stretchy?
Thanks,
Theresa
Hi Theresa!
You can use a traditional cast on method (in pattern). If you’re worried about the stretch, I would suggest using a slightly larger needle in the right hand as you work the bind off!
Thanks for your question!
Thomas
Can I use Jade Sapphire 2 ply Cashmere instead? I was aware that 2 ply Cashmere has 400 yards each skeins. Does that mean I can use only 4 skeins to make the same size like this? Is it possible to get the wrap as ombred only using 4 colors? Can you suggest the colors in blue tone? Thanks a lot!
Hello Joline,
What a great idea! You can make the same sized item in the 2 ply, but keep in mind it will be a lighter weight shawl since the 2 ply is of course half as thick as the 4 ply. We think that it would be lovely in the Jade Sapphire’s colors Mavy, Bluestone, Silver Fox, and Sterling. Keep in mind that these yarns are hand dyed, so each batch is very different and may look a little different on your computer screen. Let us know what you think!
Alyson
I’m still waiting for the color “Ink” to be re-stock… Will it come back soon?
Thanks,
Joline
Hi Joline-
Please email [email protected] and they can let you know when we expect it back in. They can also email you when it comes back in stock!
Thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
I wanted to make this wrap in the mistake rib but I want it the same dimensions as the seed stitch. Is this possible with the yarn available in the kit? Also, can I steam this as an alternative to submersion blocking?
Hi Jennifer-
We don’t have another kit that would work for this exactly, but the dimensions of these projects aren’t so different. The finished dimensions of the Seed Stitch wrap in Worsted Twist are 22 X 80-inches wide and for this project they are 20 X 68. It seems like you might just need one extra skein. We don’t sell this yarn as individual skeins however you could buy an extra skein of the 2 ply cashmere and knit it doubled. The “Ivory” color would be a good addition to any of these color ways.
Thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Hello,
I just got my kit and can’t wait to start the project. Here I got a question. Starting from each row, should I do:
Slip 1 knitwise, k1, p2, *k2, p2, repeat from * to last 3 stitches, k2, p1
Or simply do:
K2, p2, repeat to last 3 stitches, k2, p1
What’s the difference between them? Which method do you suggest?
Thanks,
Joline
Hello Joline!
We’re so happy that you are excited about your new kit! The difference between just knitting the first stitch in each row and slipping the stitch knitwise is that slipping the stitch will create more of a finished edge along both edges of the scarf. This step is totally optional, and you may knit the first stitch of each row if you’re more comfortable with that!
Happy knitting and enjoy your lovely cashmere wrap!
Alyson
Hi:
I’m about to start this. I’m curious to know what type of cast-on and cast-off were used. Thanks very much.
Hello Crissy,
Thank for your question! We used a long-tail cast on and a standard bind off in the stitch pattern for this project. You can really use any cast on or bind off for this project if you’d prefer.
Happy knitting!
Jake

Hi,
Is the ombré wrap kit still available for purchase and if so can it be shipped to the United Kingdom?
Thanks
Nicola
Hello Nicola,
Yes! We have them available here: https://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/9631-Purl-Soho-Cashmere-Ombre-Wrap-Kit
We ship worldwide as well, so you can definitely place your order to the UK! Enjoy! -Alyson
Hi,
Would it be possible to buy this kit in Bloom + one or two skeins in matching (light and darker) blue. I would like to have a blue finish on the white end.
Thanks!
Hello Jenya!
Unfortunately we don’t sell this yarn separately in skeins, out of the kits. I would recommend that you get a skein of 2 ply cashmere for each blue tone and double up the strands to make something similar to the 4 ply yarn in the kit. I would try colors Sterling and Slate Blue, since we don’t really have a true light blue. I think the silver tone will be really beautiful with the pinks and the deeper blue of the darker tone.
I hope this helps! Best of luck! -Alyson
Do you know when the plum kit will be available for purchase?
Hello, Lynne!
Thank you so much for writing in! I will have one of my associates email you once it become available to buy.
Best wishes,
Kumeko
I had knitted the amazing seed stitch wrap a few years ago and the hot pink cashmere was lucious. I ordered the ombre pink wrap and I’m disappointed. The cashmere so far feels just like cotton amd splits like cotton. I have loved all the previous projects i’ve ordered from you. I’m actually not sure I got the right yarn!
Hi Ann!
Thank you so much for writing in! I am sorry that you’re disappointed in the cashmere! I’ve emailed you personally so that we can figure out how to correct this! Again, thank you for reaching out to us!
Best,
Kumeko
Hi,
The ones I bought at the beginning of December seem to have similar feel to what Ann described. It is not as soft as I anticipated from cashmere yarns (I felt the wrap in your store some time ago and I remember it was softer..)
Thanks.
Hi, Jessica!
Thank you so much for writing in! I believe that you received the correct yarn, the cashmere will soften up much more once you start working with it! The sample in our store has been handled quite a bit so it’s very soft and worn in.
However, if you are still unhappy with it, I recommend reaching out to us via e-mail at [email protected] and we will do everything that we can to make you happy!
Please let us know if you have further questions!
Best wishes,
Kumeko
Hi,
I have the same stiffer feel to my kit as well ( received as a Christmas gift), it’s soft, but doesn’t have the cashmere feel–I am on the second color in seed stitch, is there something I can do to soften the fibers?
Hi Kristine,
Thanks for writing in! Cashmere blooms over time to be more lovely and softer. Our original cashmere wraps, which are a few years old at this point, are rich and lovely! The good news is that you can help this process along and get a softer finished product. When you are finished knitting the wrap, wet blocking will help to soften it up and even out all of your stitches. To do so, fill a basin large enough to contain the wrap with warm tap water. Add a squirt or Soak or other leave in wool wash and agitate the water. Submerge the whole wrap into the water/Soak solution and leave it for at least 15 minutes. Gently squeeze the water out of the wrap being sure not to wring the wet wrap. Lay it flat to dry on a clean towel. The resulting fabric should be much softer and will continue to soften and bloom over time.
I hope that this helps!
Cassy
I’m totally in love with these colors. A friend and I are going to do a KAL with this kit. Any suggestions for colors or ways to tweak the pattern to make it a little more ‘manly’? Can I pick up the kit at your California distribution center?
Keep up the great work. You guys are amazing!
Steve R.
Hello, Steve!
Thank you so much for writing in! Sorry for the very delayed response to your comment! You and your friend may have already begun knitting this awesome wrap, but just in case you have not started – I think that knitting the wrap using the mistake rib stitch would give a masculine vibe to this wrap. Regarding colors, I think the Ink and Fog would compliment a manly style.
You can totally pick these kits up at our warehouse in CA. I recommend calling ahead to make sure that they are in stock, these kits are super popular so we sell out quickly. Also, they are only open for shopping Tue-Fri from 9am-2:30pm.
If you have further questions, please let us know! Again, thank you for your kind words and support! We appreciate it!
Best wishes,
Kumeko
Are you restocking the plum kit anytime soon? Thanks!!
I love this kit but I would be worried about washing, and if the colours would run.
Your thoughts please
Hello Linda,
Thank you for your question. We haven’t had any feedback about the colors bleeding into one another. However, if you wanted to be extra careful you could soak your skeins in a vinegar bath (around 1 cup of vinegar for a sink basin) or a tsp of citric acid for 3-4 cups of water. I hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Happy knitting!

Hello there,
I purchased this kid and did a mistake rib wrap. However, there is something I didn’t do correct. Hence I decided to rip it off and re-knit. Is there anything I need to do to the yarns before I can re-knit?
Thanks,
Joline
Hello, Joline!
Thank you for writing in! I am sorry to hear that you had to rip out your wrap! I hope it wasn’t too much that you had to take out! On big projects this I recommend using a “lifeline.” A lifeline in knitting is when you insert thread or yarn through a row of stitches. This thread/yarn is temporary and if you make a mistake you only have rip back to your lifeline. An internet search of this term will give you a more detailed description.
You don’t need to do anything to the yarn before re-knitting, you can just dive back in!
If you have further questions, please let us know!
Best wishes,
Kumeko
I would love to make this wrap but my budget doesn’t stretch to cashmere. Could I make this in 4ply alpaca?
Thanks,
Gillian
Hi Gillian,
You can certainly make this wrap in alternate yarns! I have seen several lovely versions made in our Line Weight! The 4 ply cashmere used in this kit is a fingering weight yarn or 4 ply in UK weights. It sounds like your alpaca will work well. Please let us know how it goes!
Happy knitting!

Hi Suzanne,
Thanks for writing in! We do offer the Cashmere Ombre Wrap in color “fog” which is a gray tone ombre. If you’d like to do this same wrap in all black then I suggest using Jade Sapphire 2-ply cashmere in color “la nuit”. You would double the 2-ply yarn to make it 4-ply, which will also yield exactly the same amount of yardage for each skein the in the Ombre Wrap. I hope this helps!

Adam
If I wanted to make this in linen stitch, would the finished length be the same or near the same?
Hi Edith,
I think this is such a great idea! Linen stitch a bit denser than seed stitch, so you’ll get a narrower scarf and it might be a bit shorter too. I’d do a swatch and compare the the suggested gauge on the pattern. Let us know how it goes!
Best,
Adam
I just discovered this beautiful pattern and purchased your Line Weight yarn as a more affordable option. I’m interested in this idea of using the Linen stitch, and got inspiration from your Linen Stitch Color Block Wrap. I notice there that you recommend size 10.5 needles for worsted weight yarn that typically calls for size 7-8 needles, since the Linen Stitch is a bit denser than seed stitch. To use linen stitch on this fingering weight yarn, what size needles would you recommend? US 5 or 6? Thanks!
Hi Molly,
Thanks for writing in! We have seen a number of these wraps in Line Weight and they are all very lovely! If you would like to try using linen stitch here, I would recommend starting with a US 4 and knitting a gauge swatch. Ultimately, you want to see how you like the fabric on the needles that you decide to use. If you find that the fabric using US 4 is too unyielding, you will want to try US 5. Between the US 4 and US 5, one of those needle sizes should work for the Line Weight in linen stitch.
Do let us know how it turns out!

Hi! Does all the yarn get used, or will there be leftovers?
Hi Stevi,
Thanks for writing us! All the yarn gets used and there shouldn’t be much left over — just a few scraps here and there. Thanks again!
-Adam
I would love to knit the wrap/scarf with block of colors, but your kit for nearly $400. Wow! how many people can really afford that? You can’t simply allow us to download the pattern?
Nola
Hello Nola,
Thanks for writing in. Yes, the wrap is quite expensive, but it is 1600 yards of specially dyed cashmere. It’s quite a special piece. The pattern is for purchase separately and you can click here if you’d like to buy it. Thanks again!
-Adam
Which pattern is used in the published pictures? Seed stitch or mistake rib?
Hi Norma,
Thanks for writing us! The only mistake rib examples are in Ink and Fog, which are the blue and gray versions. The rest are all seed stitch. Both versions are beautiful in my opinion. Thanks again for writing in!
-Adam
Is the yarn held double or single?
Thank you.
Hi Debbie,
Thanks for writing in! The yarn for our Cashmere Ombre Wrap is knit as a single strand. The fabric it creates is squishy and lovely.
Happy knitting!

I have recently completed the wrap in Plum in seed stitch….. it is just beautiful. It knitted up so easily and did not seem to take much time at all….maybe because it was just so nice to knit the cashmere. By the time I converted from US dollars to Australian dollars it was over $600 AUD which was a bit overwhelming, but it is such a special piece… it has been worth it. Now I am a PurlSoho devotee.
Hi, I am interested in variegating the last and first few rows between each skein change to get a better transition – something similar to this sock pattern: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FQyjEcQLng). Can you give me an idea how many rows one skein produces based on your guage? As this will be my first attempt at this, do you have a better option for blending between the skeins.
Thanks
Hello Chris,
Thanks for writing in to us! This is an interesting idea. If you are doing seed stitch, each section measures about 8″ high, so instead of counting rows I would knit to 7 1/2″ and start blending then. However, you will have a wrong side if you are doing fair isle. Just letting you know! Let us know how it goes!
Best of luck!
Adam
I’m making the mistake rib version of this cashmere ombré wrap. I was wondering what join you recommended using when you add a new color?
Hi Sarah,
Thanks for writing in! For this project, we add a new color on the side and then weave in the ends upon completion of the wrap. That is to say, we knit each skein until you cannot complete another full row and then begin the next row with the new color. Additionally, we are careful to keep the color changes always on the same side.
I hope that this helps and enjoy knitting your lovely wrap!

Hi, I love wraps and shawls and love this pattern. It’s been a few years since I have picked up my needles – I was was an advanced beginner+, at best, when my needles were active. Is the seed stitch too much, in Your estimation for someone jumping back in to the knitting scene? Are there any videos that you can provide and best practices for success….or even alternative patterns?
Thanks
Hi Gee,
Thanks for writing in and welcome back to knitting! Seed stitch is easy to achieve. It consists of alternating knits and purls which should be achievable for you! The only caution that I would present is that this wrap is done on rather small needles and as such takes a fair amouont of time to complete but it is well worth it! At present, we don’t have a video demonstrating this stitch pattern but that are a lot of tutorials on YouTube.
If you are looking for an equally achievable pattern that would work well for advanced beginners, you can try our Mistake Rib Scarf or our Broken Garter Scarf!
I hope that this helps!

Hello,
I just finished the mistake rib version of this cashmere ombré wrap in plum and now I’m ready to bind off. What bind off technique do you suggest using? I tried the Elizabeth Zimmermann better bind off technique that you have a tutorial for, but it looks flared out. Any suggestions?
Hi Heather,
Thanks for writing in! Congratulations on getting to the end of such an epic project! For this lovely wrap, we used a regular pass over bind off in pattern. If you tend have too tight of a bind off using this method, you can use a needle size larger to bind off and that should help!
I hope that this helps!

I’m working this in seed stitch, and really enjoying it. I’m about to change colors for the first time, and wonder if you have a recommended join. One well-known knitter says that when joining colors in seed stitch, it’s a good idea to knit a full row in the new color before transitioning back to K1-P1, because it blends the colors more nicely (though I suppose the difference between color 1 and color 2 in the ombre wrap is so slight that the transition wouldn’t be obvious anyway). Do you have any thoughts on this? Thanks!
Hi Laura,
Thanks for writing in! For this lovely wrap we did not do anything special. Given that the yarn is dyed in a progressive ombre, you can just begin the next row with the new color and the join should not be too noticeable. At the end of the wrap, you will just weave in the ends and you should be set. I would recommend always changing colors on the same side for a more smooth look!

HI, I’m trying to understand the gauge “25 stitches = 4 inches” – does this mean I am measuring the number of cast on stitches, and not the number of rows? I.e. the width, and not the length?
Hi Denise,
Thanks for writing in! I am happy to help you out with gauge! To check to see if you are getting gauge, you can cast on 25 stitches and knit and inch or 2 in the pattern (seed stitch here). After knitting this piece, you will measure the width and it should come in at 4 inches wide. If the swatch is smaller, you may need to go up a needle size. If the swatch is larger, you may need to go down a needle size.
I hope that this helps and please do not hesitate to reach out!

this pink (bloom) kit shows an image of the wrap wth a cream included but the image of the skeins only goes to light pink.
does the Bloom kit come with a cream skein as well?
Hi Kate,
Thanks for writing in! The last color in the picture of the Bloom wrap is a very pale pink. For these lovely kits, all 8 skeins of cashmere for this wrap are dyed using the same color at varying intensities. Each wrap is custom dyed and the colors can vary from batch to batch as well. We endeavor to make our pictures as true to color as possible. That said each individual monitor can display colors differently, making it quite challenging to see colors as they truly are.

I finished the wrap in seed stitch in Smoke a couple of weeks ago. While it was definitely a steep price, seeing the easy drape and the warmth it provides helped ease that shock. Its a great travel knitting project since it doesn’t really require a pattern and on skein takes a while. Hopefully my next one (for my mom) will take me less than the 2 years it took me to knit my first one. I should note, that I only knit in cold weather as it is normally too hot in my apt to knit w/o air conditioner.
Hello Alma,
Thank you for writing us- it is always a joy to hear about people’s experiences knitting our projects. Congratulations on finishing this beautiful wrap and I’m happy you enjoyed your time knitting it!
Warmly,
Marilla
Hi,
I would prefer to have the seed stitch wrap the same width and length as the mistake wrap pattern. Please advise me how many stitches needed to cast on.
thank you,
Rosa
Hello Rosa,
Thank you for reaching out! To get a width measuring 17″ in seed stitch you will want to cast on 105 sts.
Happy knitting,
Marilla
I’m going to be using circular needles for this wrap. It says US 3 but doesn’t include length of needles. What would you suggest?
Hi Jennifer,
Great questions! For this lovely wrap, you could use a 24″ or 32″ needle will work well here!

Cassy
I am having a lot of trouble getting the gauge for the cashmere ombré wrap. I’m now down to size 1 needles and it is still coming out at 6 1/2 stitches per inch. I am not a loose knitter so I am a bit baffled by this. I haven’t knitted cashmere before. Any ideas?
Hi Hope,
I’m so sorry to hear you are having problems getting the correct gauge! Can you clarify if you are knitting the seed stitch or mistake stitch version of the wrap? If you are knitting the seed stitch version, I think 6.5 stitches per inch is close enough to 6.25 stitches per inch! Also, how large are you knitting your gauge swatch? Knitting a larger swatch, up to about 5 inches wide and long, will give a more accurate gauge both because you have a larger sample size and the longer rows give you more of a chance to relax into your usual knitting groove.
Please let me know so I can help you troubleshoot this!
Julianna
I was wondering if anyone had tried the wrap in double seed stitch? I am thinking it would be beautiful but not sure if the final piece would be too loose.
Hello Holly,
Thanks for reaching out! This is a great idea and it would not be to loose. It will have a similar look to our seed stitch version.
I hope this helps and happy knitting!

I purchased the Cashmere Ombre’ Wrap Kit in November saving it for a cold winter project…..well it has never gotten cold! Now it is my COVID-19 project to keep me busy! I just need to know how to add the new color….do I just lay on top? Is there a youtube? Thanks
Hi Leslie,
What a wonderful way to pass the time! We don’t have a video for adding a new color, unfortunately, but it is quite easy! You will simply start knitting with the new color by inserting your needle into the first stitch and looping the new color over, leaving a 6 inch tail – no need to tie a knot or take any extra steps! The first stitch will look loose and loopy, but you can tighten it up and secure it when you weave in your ends.
I hope that helps, and happy knitting!
Julianna
I’m on the 4th color on my Ombre’ Wrap, its getting a bit long and heavy. Since my colors are now getting lighter I’m afraid something will get dirty. Is there a way to roll the wrap or a trick like putting it in a bag while knitting? Thanks!
Hi Leslie,
Oh wow! You have come so far! While we don’t have any specific tricks for this, you can certainly rest the majority of your wrap in an extra project bag to keep it from rubbing against anything that might potentially transfer dirt or dye. This is a great way to work with larger projects! I hope that helps!
Best,
Gaby
Hello there.
Would y please let me know what is the yardage of yarn for this kit?
Thank you.
Hi Tatyana,
Great question! This kit contains 8 skeins that are 200 yards a piece for a total of 1600 yards!

Hi there,
I am not a knitter myself but, I LOVE the look of this wrap and my amazing mom just told me to pick a color and she will make it for my birthday! I’m trying to decide between plum and aquamarine and am having a hard time because the colors look different in different photos. (The plum shades, for example, look purple/pink in some pics and quite reddish-brown in others.)
Given the big investment (of both money & time) my mom will be making, I want to be sure to pick a color I’ll love. Is it possible to get swatches sent in advance?
Hi Heather,
Thanks for reaching out! Wow! That is such a wonderful gift! I completely understand, unfortunately we do not offer swatches for the the Cashmere Ombre Wrap. I can assure you though that the plum matches the colors of the photos on the Kit page and is a beautiful plumy hue not reddish-brown! The aquamarine is also a gorgeous option!
I hope this helps and please feel free to reach out with any more questions!

I’m making my 4th cashmere ombre wrap this time in lupine.
have you seen it done in seed stitch but sideways like the osmosis wrap, with long, narrower strips of color? For a wrap 17 x 80, I figure I’d need to cast on 500 stitches. Would this be beautiful or possibly weird?
Hi Cheryl,
We haven’t seen any versions like that yet, but it’s a great idea! Since this pattern is worked over an odd number of stitches, you’d need to cast on either 499 or 501 stitches to make the wrap 80 inches long.
All the best,
Lili
