oh you girls, now I have fit this into Robyn’s scarf and hat and I am the slowest knitter on earth. oh well, you only live once, I can watch a video of Swan Lake (hope I don’t goof it up). thanks girls…..it is my Christmas present to me.
Love the yarns and the designs!
I have saved a number of Purl Soho’s patterns – one request, please – give the needle size in metric as well as the US size. E.g., US #8 (5 mm). It would be helpful to subscribers outside the USA. Thanks!
Hello Penny! Thanks for the suggestion!
If you look at our online shop for needles—all the translations are listed. Take a look at our needles here: https://www.purlsoho.com/tools/knitting-needles.html
Thanks for writing in! -Alyson
Looks pretty easy. Going to give it try. Thanks for the pattern.
Could I buy the wool, needles and free pattern as a kit? (for a gift).
Hello, Judi!
Thank you for writing in! We don’t currently have this available as a kit, however we can definatly design a kit just for you! Someone from our New York store will be emailing you very soon to discuss the details. Again, thank you for reaching out to us!
Best,
Kumeko
This is really cute and looks super easy. I have just the skein of yarn in mind for this project. Thanks for sharing! I always love your patterns and ideas.
I love this pattern…actually looks like a project I could finish by Christmas. However, I am having a terrible time getting the slip 1 purl wise, wyif, to look snug and neat. I would welcome any suggestions…thank you!
Hello, Rebecca!
Thank you so much for writing in! I am so sorry for the delayed response! I’m also sorry to hear that you’re having a terrible time with the slip 1 purl wise, wyif stitches. This stitch pattern is designed to give your scarf a nice edge so I can see how it would be upsetting if it’s not coming out neat and snug. Have you tried pulling the tension on your yarn a little tighter with these stitches? I would give that a shot first. If that doesn’t do the trick let us know and we’ll keep working to get this perfect for you. Again, thank you for your question!
Happy knitting,
Kumeko
I downloaded the dovetail scarf pattern but when I tried to print it, there was another layer of printing superimposed over the top of the pattern printing.
Hello!
I would recommend using our PRINT feature on the top right corner of the pattern! You can chose to eliminate the photos as well so that its a more concise hand out. Hope this helps! -Alyson
love the quick nature of this project. I’m a newbie knitter, so not sure what “slip 1 purlwise wyif” means. Can you clarify?
Sure Suzanne! That means to slip one stitch from your left hand needle to the right hand needle by inserting your right hand needle into the stitch in the way that you would if you were going to purl it. “Wyif” means “with yarn in front.” That means you should just make sure the yarn is oriented to the front of the work, also like if you were going to purl before you slip the stitch.
Hope this helps! Best of luck! -Alyson
This is such a gorgeous gift from you–now I will surely be making plenty to give away this Christmas.
Thank you
Thank you for the pattern. Great Christmas gift.
Should the 8 cast on stitches be closed up like was done on the dovetail wrap?
Hi, Kathy!
Thank you so much for writing in! Yes, the cast on stiches should be sewn the same way as was done on the Dovetail wrap! Again, thank you for your question, happy knitting!
Best,
Kumeko
How much is one skein? 100g or 200g? I live in Australia so would prefer to get wool here. Thanks!
Hi, Amy!
Thank you for your question! The Purl Soho Mulberry Merino weights 100 grams and is 225 meters. Again, thanks for writing in!
Happy knitting,
Kumeko
I would like to try this. I need some information. I live in Italy and work with the mm sizes. What does it mean for the needle sizes? 6, 20, 24, oe 32 – inch? Is that the length of the plastic cord between the needles or is it the needle size?
Thank you
Hello Ethel!
US #6 refers to the size of the needles which is equivalent to 4mm needles. The 20, 24 or 32 inches refer to the length of the cord between the needles which are all about 51, 61, and 81 cm in length. Hope this helps! Enjoy the pattern! -Alyson
Hey there!
LOVE your patterns and yarns. Thanks so much for all your inspiration!
I would love to make this scarf and am wondering would Malabrigo Rio yarn be suitable at all? Would I need to change the needle size and stitches?
See below for yarn details:
Weight: Worsted Texture: plied Yardage/Meters: 210 yards (192 meters) Skein weight: 100 grams (3.53 ounces) Gauge: 18.0 to 22.0 sts = 4 inches Recommended needle size: US 6 – 8 or 4 – 5mm Content: 100% Superwash Merino Wool.
Thanks so much,
Elfin
Hello Elfin!
It looks like this yarn is ideal for this pattern! Best of luck and happy holidays! -Alyson
Hi there, beautiful pattern!! Does it knit up from the triangle point to the longest side? And I’m not comfortable with knitting in the round so could I knit this on longer straight needles to accommodate the stitch count?
Hello, Renee!
Thank you so much for writing in! You are correct, this does knit up from the point to the longest side. This pattern does not require knitting in the round, we used circular needles to accomodate the 35+ inches of stitches that you’ll end up with on the longest side. So, you would knit on the circular needles just as you would on straight needle. If you have straight needles that are long enough (20-inch, 24-inch, or 32-inch) you can totally knit this with straight needles. If you have further questions, please let us know!
Happy knitting,
Kumeko
Renee!
I must beg your pardon as I have led you astray! I am so sorry! The Dovetail scarf is knit from the long side down to the point! But everything else I wrote holds true! Again, I am terribly sorry for that mistake!
Best wishes,
Kumeko
Thank you for this pattern just in time for Christmas. I just started knitting it. At the end, don’t we have to sew the point like in the Dovetail wrap?
Hi, Pat!
Thank you so much for writing in! You are correct, you will stitch up the little gap at the cast on edge in the same fashion as we did for the Dovetail Wrap. Please let us know if you have further questions!
Best wishes,
Kumeko
Sorry, I meant the gap at the cast on edge. patp
Just finished the Hitchhiker shawlette with sock weight yarn. This looks like a great next project. Thank you for the pattern!
This is so cute and great for short girls I am starting mine today Thank You.
is impossible to download
Hello, Mil Balentin!
I am sorry that you’re having trouble downloading the pattern. I’ve emailed a copy to you, I hope that helps! Thank you for writing in and happy knitting.
Best wishes,
Kumeko
Hi, I need help. I have started over at least three times because I get tripped up when it says to knit to marker in Row 3. But the marker isn’t there because I slipped it off when I was knitting Row 2. When do I place marker or know when to increase each row when I am working Row 3? Or am I missing something completely??
Thank you for your help.
Hello, Sharon!
Thank you so much for writing in! When slipping the marker you should be slipping it onto the other needle rather than slipping off the needles completely. I hope that answers your question! If you have further questions, please let us know!
Happy knitting,
Kumeko
You’ve done it again! I didn’t think there was much new to be done with a scarf until I started knitting the cowls on PurlBee & I’m on my third Mistake Rib scarf and three friends are knitting them too. NOW you’ve really done it with the fabulous Dovetail. I love, love, love PurlSoho and live in th South of England so can’t pop by. But I did send my daughter and you sorted her out with yarn and ideas t knit a baby blanket. She did and it’s great.
Happy Christmas you’re the BEST.
Merry Christmas to you, Sally! Thank you so much for the kind words!
Happy knitting! -Alyson
Hello, I have a small gap at the cast-on edge, similar (but smaller) to the one in your Dovetail wrap. Do I have to fix that in the same way?
Thank you, once again an ingenious design!
Elsje
Howdy, Elsje!
Thank you so much for your kind words! You are correct, you’ll stitch that small gap in the same fashion as the Dovetail wrap. Thanks for writing in!
Happy knitting,
Kumeko
I noticed that there is one step from the Dovetail Wrap not included here: closing up the bottom so yo get a nice point. I’ve started this scarf and think I will do the same–so far the point is pretty blunt.
Hi, Mary Kay!
Thank you so much for writing in! You are correct, you’ll want to sew the cast on stitches the same way as in the Dovetail Wrap.
Best,
Kumeko
Do I ask such silly questions that they are still awaiting moderation (one from December 3)?
Kind regards,
elsje
Hello, Elsje!
No question is ever a silly question! We truly appreciate your taking the time to write in and I am so very sorry for the delay in response! I have written back to you regarding your question on the hand warmers and if you have further questions, please let us know and we will do our very best to respond in the immediate!
Again, thank you for writing in!
Best wishes,
Kumeko
Can this be made using fingering yarn?
Can you advise how to adjust?
Many thanks!
Yvonne
Hello Yvonne!
You can used fingering yarn, but you would have to alter the gauge and therefore math of the pattern pretty significantly. If you double up the yarn you may be able to get a similar gauge to the original pattern—I would recommend making a swatch and see what you come up with! Best of luck! -Alyson
I just finished knitting this for a Christmas gift using a skein of the Mulberry Merino I had left from a Mistake Rib Scarf I knitted last Christmas in the beautiful grey. I crocheted a picot edging along the short sides in a contrasting creamy white and it looks really pretty. Thank you for posting this just in time for gift-giving. Merry Christmas to all of you.
I love this scarf, color and yarn! One dumb question==How do you fasten it? Tie it?
Hi Elinore-
You can tie it or tuck it into a jacket, or use a pin to close it.
Thanks so much for getting in touch and please let us know if you have any more questions!
Molly
Please explain difference in knit 1, yo and yo, knit 1. I am new to yo. Thank you.
Hi Lynn,
Thank you for writing in and my apologies for the delayed response! The difference between knit 1, yo and yo, knit 1 is the location of the yarn over. Placing the yarn over in different locations provides a different effect. If you need more help with yarn overs, we have a handy tutorial here: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2013/11/11/yarn-over-yo/
Happy knitting!
-Cassy
Thank you for this wonderful pattern! Do you have a suggestion on needle sizes I I were to use maxima manos del Uruguay yarn? Thank you!! Dina
Hi Dina,
I love the idea of using Maxima! It is so soft and the colors are great. Karin has knit it in a variety of yarns and they all look great! For Maxima, I would recommend using a US 7.
Happy knitting!
Cassy
I know that this scarf is knit from the point up. However, in the early going it looks more like I am knitting from the long edge down to the point (the reverse). I am sure I am following the pattern correctly. Is this something that will “correct” itself once I get more of the item knit? Thanks for your help!
Hi Ken,
Thanks for writing in and my apologies for the delayed response! The scarf is knit from the long side down. Even so, the point did not truly appear for me until I was casting it off!
Happy knitting!
Cassy
beautiful scarf! would the Quince yarn in puffin work for this?
thank you!
Dina
Hi, Dina!
Thank you so much for writing in! Sorry about the delayed response! The Quince yarn in Puffin is bulky weight yarn, it gets 3 to 2.5 stitches per inch whereas the Mulberry Merino is more of a sport weight yarn getting 5-7 stitches per inch. If you were to use the Puffin you would end up with a much larger scarf, it would be more like our Dovetail Wrap (https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2015/02/17/dovetail-wrap/).
Please let us know if you have further questions!
Best,
Kumeko
hello, is it also possible to knit the scarf with US 11 needles? I really would like a scarf of this shape 🙂
Hi Flora,
Thanks for writing in and our apologies for the terribly delayed response! The amazing thing about this scarf and the original wrap, is that they can be knit out of any yarn and the corresponding needles. Our original Dovetail Wrap was knit on US 13. You can knit the wrap or the scarf using your US 11s so long as the yarn pairs well with them. Brooklyn Tweed’s Quarry would work well as would Jade Sapphire’s 12 ply cashmere.
Happy knitting!
Cassy
I’m just stuck…what does it mean on the instructions when something is in parenthesis?
Row 1 & the repeat row 1 each have 8 stiched, correct?
Row 2: do I k2 AND yo, k1 twice? Then place the marker? Then k1, yo twice?
If I do that I don’t have enough stitches left to follow the rest of the directions.
There must have been a prior increase somewhere that I’m not understanding.
Thanks so much, it is a beautiful scarf
Hello, Lynn!
Thank you so much for writing in! I am happy to clarify the pattern instructions! I’ll type the original directions and then a translation.
Row 1: K2, [yo, k1] 2 times, place marker, [k1, yo] 2 times, k1, slip 1 purlwise wyif. [12 stitches]
Here the paranthesis indicate the stitches that you’ll be repeating. So, you’ll K2. Then Yo, k1 twice. Next, place marker. Then K1, yo twice. Finally, K1, slip 1 purlwise wyif. The [12 stiches] means that you should have 12 stitches on your needles.
Row 2: Knit to last stitch, slipping the marker when you come to it, slip 1 purlwise wyif.
Here you’ll knit 11 stitches making sure that you slip the marker when you come to it. The last stitch you will slip 1 purlwise wyif.
Row 3: K2, yo, knit to 1 stitch before marker, yo, k1, slip marker, k1, yo, knit to last 2 stitches, yo, k1, slip 1 purlwise wyif. [4 stitches increased]
Here you’ll follow the directions as written (you don’t have to repeat anything here). [4 stitches increseased] means that you have added 4 more stitches to your needle.
Then you simply repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have a total of 204 stitches.
If you have further questions, please let us know! Again, thank you for your question.
Best,
Kumeko
Never mind…I figured it out.
Thanks,
Lynn
Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but in the comments it says this scarf is worked from the point up. What I’m seeing with 34 rows knitted is that the 8 cast on stitches are at the neck. When you sew the 8 stitches together, it will create a long straight top edge to the scarf.
Hello, Louisa!
Thank you so much for writing in! You are correct! This knits from the long side down to the point. We appreciate you pointing this out, thank you!
Best wishes,
Kumeko
Hi Kumeko,
I have made a mistake and was wondering if you would know how I could fix it without having to start over. Somehow I have 52 stitches on one side of the marker and 51 on the other. If I leave it I am guessing it is going to turn out wonky ! Can I add in an extra stitch somewhere or should I just unravel until the stitches are even again? Thanks for your help!
Hello Amy,
Thanks for writing us. Increasing a stitch will be visible and if you are OK with that, then I think the scarf will still turn out fine. However, I am a perfectionist and rather rip out until both sides are even again. Personally, I would rip out rows until both sides are even again. Good luck to you!
Best,
Adam
It’s an easy wonderful pattern. The scarf fits beautiful. Short and firm. Very cosy and comforting. A Big Bang for an easy pattern.
I am knitting (for ages already) your lovely dovetail scarf. I had finished it but found it too small, took the finished row out and went on. Now I have 320 stitches on my needle and still the wingspan is only 50 inches and the height 24 inches. I would very much like to make the wingspan wider end not increase the height much more , so could I do some more yo’s at the sides? Or is there another way to make the ends more “pointed” ?
Hi Elsje,
Thanks for writing in! The original sample measured a wing span of only 35 1/2″, so you have already made the scarf much wider. If you’d like to keep going, there’s nothing stopping you! You can make this scarf as wide and long as you desire, just so long as you have enough yarn. To Make the ends more pointed you could wet block the piece and stretch it by pinning it to the shape you want. In fact, this process will probably add some more inches to your finished dimensions. I hope this helps!
Best,
Adam
What yarns would you recommend for a lightweight spring version of this scarf?
Hi Erin,
Thanks for your question! This would look great in the Cotton Pure yarn or even the Euroflax! They are both cool to the touch and drape very well. Best of luck and happy knitting!
-Adam
Hi! I’d like to knit this for someone who requested that the yarn-over lines be off-centre (he says “25% to the left”). Is this possible? How would I achieve that?
Thanks!
Hi Tina,
Thanks for the question. Quite the challenge! The yarn overs in this pattern are actually increases, so if you offset them, they will skew the triangular shape of the scarf and turn it into something more abstract or oblong. You could do a M1 increase each side at the center and then add yarn over, k2tog along a diagonal line in the pattern. You’d do this by offsetting the yo, k2tog by one each time. Hope this gets you started at least!
-Adam
Hi Purl Soho!
I was wondering what bind off method was used in the photograph? The pattern says to bind off loosely but the photographed piece looks more complex to me. Many thanks!
Hi Kim,
Thanks for writing in! For this lovely scarf we used a regular pass over cast off. If you tend to get a tight bind off using this method, you might want to try using a needle one size up to bind off as this will get you a bit more stretchieness in the bind off!
I hope that this helps!
Cassy
If I wanted to make this a bit larger and use more than one skein would I make any adjustments to the pattern or would I just follow the instructions as they are?
Hi Blair,
Thanks for writing in! To make this lovely scarf larger, you can keep on knitting past the 204 stitches that we recommend here until to reach the size that you would like!
Best,
Cassy
Hi purl soho: I started my scarf on straight needles and then I switched over to the circular
Needle: I didn’t connect but when I started
Knitting I lost the spine /I mean the middle , what am I doing wrong? Thanks. Kay
Hi Kay,
Thanks for writing in to us. If you switched over after a yarn over row you might have dropped them, losing your yarn over increase. I’d check for this and see if you can pick up a yarn over directly above where your other yarn overs are. Thanks!
Adam
Hello! I’m fairly new to knitting, and for some reason, I can’t seem to understand how to work Row 1 in the “Shape Scarf” section. I’ve tried interpreting the directions a few different ways, but every time, I manage to be at least 2 stitches short to complete the sequence. For example, I’d knit 2, then (yo, k1)2 times and then come to the 1st (k1, yo) and only have 2 stitches left on the needle – 2 stitches short of doing the second bracket and the last 2 stitches of the row. Any idea what I’m doing wrong? Is there another way to explain how to complete the row?
Thank you so much!
Brooke
Hi Brooke,
Thanks for writing in! I am not quite sure what could be going wrong. I sometimes find that it is helpful to write out the whole row.
Row 1: K2, [yo, k1], [yo, k1], place marker, [k1, yo], [k1, yo], k1, slip 1 purlwise wyif
The YOs create new stitches while not using existing stitches so you should begin the row with 8 stitches and end with 12 stitches.
I hope that this helps!
Cassy
I got it! Thank you so much for your help!
I think I am doing something wrong. The finished photograph looks like there are two columns of yarn-over holes in the center of the scarf. The way I am following the directions, the same stitch has the marker on it the whole time therefore the same stitch is being slipped…I’m only a tiny ways in but this is worrisome. Also, as a result of this, the yarn-over holes are only developing on one side. Where and how often do I move the stitch marker to make it right?
WHOA I think I fixed it with Google.
Yes. Yes. I understand now. And yes I am a college kid figuring this out in her bedroom. Thank you.
Hello!
Would this be okay to knit for a baby / toddler?
Thanks!
Josephine
Hi Josephine,
Thanks for writing in! I think that this would work well for a little one! I have seen a few on smaller folks! The great thing about this pattern is that you can knit it to any size by just knitting more or fewer rows!
Happy knitting!
Cassy
Hello!
This is a lovely pattern! I am planning on making it to go with my 1850’s reenacting costume. Could I keep increasing and make it just a bit bigger? I don’t want something as large as the wrap, just something in between.
Thanks!
Hi Grace,
Thanks for your question! Yes, you can keep increasing to make this pattern into more of a shawl it you wanted.
Happy knitting!
Carly
Exactly the model I’m looking for, thank you very much.
Is your yarn available for purchase in the UK. The cost of buying it in the US is prohibitive! Love the look of the yarn!
Hello Christine,
Thank you for reaching out and for your kind words! Unfortunately, we do not sell our yarn in the UK, but we do ship internationally! For rates, check out our shipping page.
Happy knitting!
-Marilla
Can this scarf be made with Berrocco Vintage, Cascade 220 Superwash, Universal yarns deluxe worsted superwash? Thanks.
Hello Bill,
Thank you for reaching out! This pattern calls for a gauge of 18 stitches per 4 inches in garter stitch with a US6 suggested needle size. I believe that the Cascade 220 superwash is a DK weight, which would make it a great fit for this pattern. Berrocco Vintage and Universal yarns deluxe worsted superwash would both be to thick for this pattern, however if you wanted to do some experimenting you could go up in needle size and create a larger version of the scarf.
I hope this helps and happy knitting!
-Marilla
I plan on making the dovetail scarf, is there a pattern for fingerless mitts that would complement the scarf in the same yarn? I have 3 skeins total.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cyndy
Hi Cyndy,
Thanks for writing in! We have quite a few fingerless glove patterns written for Mulberry Merino! Our Travelling Cable Hand Warmers are my favorite, but you could also consider our Fisherman’s Rib Hand Warmers or Stockinette Hand Warmers.
Best of luck and happy knitting!
Julianna
When will you bring back the Purl Soho Paprika Red yarn ? You have had it out of circulation for a very long time. Thank you
Hi Myrna,
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, Mulberry Merino in Paprika Red has been discontinued and will not be returning to our line. I’m so sorry about that! However, I do think that Anzula Cricket in the color 1 Red Shoe is quite similar and would be a good substitute for the Dovetail Scarf.
I hope that helps!
Julianna
I had a question about the beginning of the pattern.
Am I repeating the k2 or am I repeating k2,[yo,k1]?
Thank you!
Hi Jillanne,
Thanks for reaching out! Whenever a pattern has a repeated section, it will be indicated by enclosing the repeat in either parentheses or brackets. In this case, you will be repeating just the bracketed stitches, which are [yo, k1].
I hope that clears things up!
Julianna
Hi there! I’ve recently discovered your patterns and I’m in love with the style. I’m trying to knit the dovetail scarf and I’m having no issues following the instructions but as I look at it the beginning point is not a point. It’s where I knit the 8 cast ons, knit 7 the p,sl. The first two rows do not make this a point. Did I do something wrong? I’d appreciate any feedback. Thank you!!
Hello Alice,
Thank you for writing us and for your words! The point doesn’t start to appear until you are a few rows in. As you increase out the point will become more pronounced.
Happy knitting!
-Marilla
Is there another yarn that works up similarly? This color is no longer available and I’m not to fond of those still available in this product.
Hi Christine,
Thanks for writing in! You could easily substitute either Season Alpaca or Anzula Cricket if you prefer any of those colors! Season Alpaca has slightly less yardage than Mulberry Merino so I would recommend getting two skeins, but Anzula Cricket has the exact same yardage as the original yarn, so you will still only need one.
I hope that helps!
Julianna
I am making this with a skein of mulberry merino I purchased last year. The color is no longer available. I am approaching the end and running out of yarn. Eeek. Can I use the crochet cast off? Also. Can the patterns specify which type of cast on and cast off the pattern used. Thank you
Hello Joanna,
Thank you for reaching out! We used a basic bind off, but you can certainly use a crochet cast off.
Happy knitting!
-Marilla
Please could you tell me what type of cast on you suggest using?
Hello Jai,
Thank you for reaching out! I would suggest a long tail cast on for this project.
Happy knitting!
-Marilla
Hello again,
Would it be possible to use blue sky fibres metalico sport weight yarn for this ? It requires 3.75 /5 needles. With a gauge of 5/6 stitches per inch. If so could you advice how many stitches to cast on? Should it be just an even number in order to follow your delightful pattern? . I’m still quite new to knitting. Smiles…jj
Hello Jai,
Thanks for reaching out! I would keep your 8 stitch cast on and just continue your repeat of rows 2 and 3 until it is your desired size!
Happy knitting,
Marilla
I want to purchase the paprika red wool & silk yarn plus the pattern for the dove tail scarf.
I’ll give you the number of my VISA card and my address for mailing it to me.

Hello Barbara,
Thank you for reaching out! To purchase our yarn you can simply put it in your shopping basket and proceed from there. You can find our Mulberry Merino through this link; .

Can I knit dovetail scarf in sport weight yarn? I have 440 yards
Hi Janet,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes, your yarn sounds just right for this pattern! We only used 247 yards of sport weight yarn for our scarf, so you can even make yours a little bigger if you would like!
Happy knitting!
Julianna
I am knitting the Dovetail Scarf, and as seen in a previous comment in 2018, I am not seeing the “point” at the beginning where you cast on 8, Knit 7.
The reply was that the “point” will be more noticeable when you knit in a few rows. I have knitted in approx 18 rows, and still not seeing a “point”. I’m hesitant to continue. Can you please clarify.
I love the appearance of this scarf.
Thank you.
Hi May,
Thanks for writing in! This scarf begins at the center of the top straight edge, so it does take a while to see the triangle shape emerge! If you slide your work to the cable portion of your circular needle, the cable will be able to curve around the point of the triangle so you can see it a little better. However, as long as your stitches are increasing appropriately, I’m sure your scarf will turn out to the correct shape!

Julianna
Thank you so much for response. I think I understand the pattern better now and looking forward to finishing one. I’m sure I’ll want to make more!
Appreciate the help, Julianna. Take care.
Hi There
Is this suitable for fingering weight yarn? The skein says 20 st =4″.
Would I go down a needle size? If I wanted to make it a bit bigger should I keep needle size the same?
Thanks
Caron
Hi Caron,
Thanks for reaching out! This pattern is written for a sport weight yarn which is a bit heavier than a fingering weight. I would suggest working a gauge swatch with the yarn you want to use and an appropriate needles size (typically a US 2 – 5 for fingering weight yarns) and you can adjust the pattern from there! If you want more open knit you could follow the pattern as written with the recommended US 6 needle. I recommend checking out our All About Gauge tutorial, it is an excellent resource to use!

Hello!
I want to knit this beautiful dovetail scarf for my one year old. Can you give me instructions for baby size, please.
Hi Denise,
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, we don’t currently offer this pattern in other sizes but thank you for expressing your interest and I will be sure to pass this along to the rest of the team!

Hi,
I put this project down for some time. I picked it up and can’t figure out what side is the increase side.
Do you have any tips?
Thanks,
Emily
Hi Emily,
Thank you for writing in. One thing I found helpful when knitting this scarf was to check if there were any yarn overs on my current row. If there are, then you are ready to knit a regular row without increases. If you do not spot any yarn overs around your marker or on your edges, then you are ready to work an increase row. You might also find it helpful to place a removable stitch marker on your right side to help you easily identify which row you are on. I hope these tips help but please let me know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
