Two-Tone Banded Cardigan
Our Two-Tone Banded Cardigan is structured but easygoing, tailored but fluid. With a lone button, it moves with you; with an open V-neck it breathes; and with a peep of color, there’s a little secret, too!
You knit this cardigan in one piece from bottom to top, then work the back and fronts separately. Join the shoulders together, then pick up for each sleeve and knit in the round down to the cuff. To finish, pick up and knit a different-color placket, fold it back and attach for a hearty edge.
We knit our Two-Tone Banded Cardigan in two very special yarns from opposite ends of the spectrum. The main yarn is Good Wool, our undyed 100% Andean highland wool, available only in the five shades of the sheep that grew them.
And the placket is Posy, our merino-cashmere-nylon blend, available in 16 glorious hand-dyed shades. Dare a pop of Azalea Glow or Sour Gooseberry (like we did), or go for just a whisper with Lilac Mist or Pink Peppermint.
However you play the two yarns off each other, this happy little cardigan sings notes of mellow and bright in perfect harmony!

It’s adorable but looks very cropped. How would it lay if knitted a few inches longer?
Hi Suzi,
Thanks for reaching out! It would be quite easy to add as much length as you need in the body of the sweater before working the armhole instructions. This would give the sweater a lovely, slightly swingy silhouette due to the open front!
Happy knitting!

Love this sweater! Could you use one or two skeins of Pocket Posy instead of the larger skein of Posy? It seems like a lot of yarn to buy for just a small detail.
Hi Dakota,
Thanks so much for writing in and for the kind words! Although it looks like a small detail, the amount of yarn used in the hem band really does add up! Even for the smallest size, you would need 3 skeins of Pocket Posy, so we suggest getting a full skein of Posy, which is equivalent to 4 Pocket Posy, just to be on the safe side.
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Can you please tell me the difficulty level of this cardigan?
Hello Leanne,
Thank you for reaching out! I would say that the two components that are challenging are the short row shaping and the construction of the placket. If these techniques are new to you it could be a great opportunity to learn a new skill.
Happy knitting!

What contrast color yarn and button would you recommend for this pattern with Hickory Nut?
Hi Kathy,
Thanks for reaching out! With a neutral yarn like Good Wool, you really can’t go wrong when selecting a shade of Posy for the placket. I would suggest choosing whatever color makes you the happiest! For a coordinating button, you could either use a Large Round Button in Brown or a Dyed to Match Button in Tabby Gray.
Happy knitting!

Hello,
Would cashmere merino bloom or 6-ply cashmere work for this cardigan?
Thanks!
Hello Meg,
Thank you for reaching out! Cashmere Merino Bloom would be an excellent substitute for Good Wool. You will, however, need more skeins Cashmere Merino Bloom than Good Wool. The yardage required for yarn A is approximately 1005 (1115, 1275, 1410, 1580, 1720) so because Cashmere Merino Bloom is 218 yards you will need 5(6, 6, 7, 8, 8).
I hope this helps and happy knitting!

Hello,
Can I make this using Cotton Pure? I purchased enough skeins in black to make your classic crew neck cardigan, but fell in love with this pattern.
Hi Claudette,
Great question! Cotton Pure is a bit thicker than Posy, but it does very well when knitted at a tight gauge. I would recommend knitting a gauge swatch to see if it will work!
Happy knitting!

Hi there,
I love the look of this sweater, but I think I would like it better if there were additional buttonholes on the overlapped portion of the fronts so it would close instead of being open at the bottom. I was thinking of adding 3 evenly spaced for a total of 4 buttonholes? Would that be an easy change to make?
Hello Maggie,
Than you for reaching out! Yes, this will be a simple alteration. You will just add three more button holes, using the instructions for the one hole in the pattern.
I hope this helps and happy knitting!

I have 3 pocket posy in gooseberry do you think that’s enough for a size medium?
Hi Zia,
Thanks for reaching out! The pattern requires approximately 170 (180, 195, 205, 215, 225) yards of Posy depending on the size you have selected, so if you have 3 skeins of Pocket Posy (79 yards each) you should have about 237 yards which will be plenty for any of the sizes!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!

I see that Sour Gooseberry Posy is no longer available. Is it discontinued? What other yarn is closest to Posy that matches that color?
Also, I see that I just missed the Good Wool sale by one day. Will it be on sale again soon?
Thanks!
Hi Linda,
Thanks for reaching out! We’re currently in the process of transitioning our full-size Posy and Pocket Posy skeins into 50g skeins and we’re hoping to launch this new size in just a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, Sour Gooseberry won’t be one of the returning colors, but if you’re looking for a similar color then I’d suggest Koigu’s KPM 1521 or 1521.5 for a close match! I’m not sure when the Good Wool will be going back on sale, but you can contact us anytime at [email protected] for additional help with questions like that!
Warmly,
Kelsey
