Simple Hand Warmers + Hat in New Colors
A Shaker peg, a pair of Levis 501s, a shingled New England cottage… The effortless balance between beauty and function. We’d like to think that our Simple Hand Warmers + Hat are a worthy addition to this list of pared-down classics!
The truth is, this handsome kit is already a Purl Soho classic, an update of what-we-used-to-call our Learn to Knit Hat + Hand Warmers Kit. Like the original version, this one makes an adult pair of hand warmers and a hat using two skeins of Purl Soho’s Worsted Twist, a yarn so soft and beautiful that, even if this is your very first knitting project, you’ll proudly wear the fruits of your effort when you’re done!
So what’s new about this kit? The name, of course, but also its earthy new palette, as calm and lovely as a memorable walk in the winter woods. Otherwise, we didn’t tinker with a pattern that wasn’t broken. Geared for first-time knitters, we walk you through every single step of the way!
Both the hand warmers and the hat are constructed from basic rectangles that you sew into shape with a single seam. And in garter stitch, there’s no purling required… Simple, right?
From total beginners to old knitting pros, our new Simple Hand Warmers + Hat Kit is an educational experience that also happens to be pure knitting fun!
Yarn lovers, if you adore the yarn used in this project, you’ll love exploring all of our other yarn collections! The garter stitch hand warmers and Hats look wonderful. Great pattern ideas. Will be fun to do.
I can’t seem to figure out how much one kit costs. I’ve emptied my cart because it showed $62! That can’t be the cost of one kit can it?
Hello Joan,
Thank you for reaching out and expressing your concern! Your feedback is vital to us. This kit includes two skeins of yarn, a pair of bamboo needles, a tapestry needle, and a copy of the pattern book. If you are looking for a more affordable option you could get the pattern book and then you could use two skeins of Cascade 220. I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Marilla
I have been making these for the last couple of years and I absolutely love how simple and yet functional they turn out. They are lovely to make and give as gifts. Thank you for such an awesome pattern.
Is it possible to knit this kit in stockinette stitch instead of garter stitch?
Hello Sherry,
Thank you for reaching out! You could do this in stockinette, but it will change your gauge so you might have to do a couple of adjustments to the pattern. For alternatives to this pattern I would check out https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2013/10/10/purl-soho-basic-hats-for-everyone/ and Stockinette Hand Warmers.
I hope this helps!

Dear Team,
can I purchase an e- pattern for the Set?
It is giftcrafting time!
Thank you.

Hi Sabine,

Hi! I love this pattern for the handwarmers (so easy!) and have made them several times. I’d love to make a pair for my 18month old son. Can you give me some suggestions for how many stitches to cast on and how many inches to knit? How big to make the thumbhole? Thanks!
Hello Molly,
Thank you for writing in! The first thing you will need to do is figure out how big you would like your hand warmers to be. Once you have decided this you will need to knit a gauge swatch to figure out how many stitches per in you are getting. Once you have your stitches per inch, you can use this information to figure out how many stitches to cast on. I hope this helps and let us know how it goes!
Happy knitting,
Marilla
I need to make some chemo hats for our daughter and she has allergies to wool. Any recommends?
Hi Mary!
We carry a beautiful yarn called “Worsted Cotton” by Blue Sky Alpacas. It is 100% organic cotton and is so soft!
I hope this helps!
Carly
Hi, I have some extra Mulberry Merino – what adjustments would I need to make to use this yarn to make the hat? Thanks for any info you can provide!
Hi Dina!
Thanks for writing in! I would recommend using Mulberry Merino held doubled since the pattern is written for a worsted weight yarn.
Happy knitting,
Carly
Is there a pattern for the hand warmers using a circular needle?
Hi Cecelia,
Thanks for writing in! The beauty of these hand warmers comes from their ease of being able to work them “flat”. This means you can work them on either straight or circular needles if you prefer. If you’re looking to make hand warmers in the round specifically, I’d recommend a different pattern, but note that smaller circumferences (like what’s common in mittens/hand warmers) are more easily completed with double pointed needles or in the round with magic loop which requires circular needles that are at least 32 inches long.
I hope that helps give you a better idea! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
All the best,
Zha Zha
hi, what length of US 7 needles do you recommend for this project? thanks in advance!
Hi Violet,
Thanks for reaching out! You could use a US 7 straight needle, or a US 7 24-inch circular needle!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!
Gianna
I keep clicking on the link that says BUY THIS KIT and ending up at an error page. I’ve tried searching for it and going to several different pages and none of them work. I’d really like to just buy the kit so I know I’m getting the right thing but I can’t seem to do it. Can you help?
Hi Alexandra,
Thanks for reaching out. I’m afraid that we’re no longer offering the kit for this project! But you can absolutely purchase all the materials separately. This is what you’ll need to buy: 2 skeins of Worsted Twist, size US 7 straight knitting needles, a yarn needle (unfortunately, we don’t currently have any in stock), and the pattern. I hope the links help you find everything you need to get started!
All the best,
Lili
Is this pattern still available?
Hi Jackie,
It looks like we sent you an email with this pattern a few weeks ago! Can you please let me know if you received that email in your inbox and are able to download the pattern from there?
All the best,
Lili
