Hat + Hand Warmers for Beginners

Many of us probably remember using grandma’s scratchy scraps and old bent aluminum needles to knit our very first scarf, hat or blanket. We were proud enough of our accomplishment to try again, but the project itself is probably forgotten in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. It is our mission at Purl Soho to prevent the sad fate of moth-eaten first projects!

Novice or expert, we all appreciate the pleasure of wonderfully soft merino and warm wooden knitting needles; we all feel inspired by sophisticated, modern design; and we all want to wear or give the fruits of our labor with pride and joy. That’s why Purl Soho has created a kit for first-time knitters that satisfies basic standards of beauty. Our new Hat + Hand Warmers for Beginners Kit equips the fledgling knitter with the supplies and knowledge (from winding into a ball to weaving in ends) to knit up a beautiful set of winter goodies!
Yarn lovers, if you adore the yarn used in this project, you’ll love exploring all of our other yarn collections! Discover over 45 thoughtfully designed yarns in nearly every natural fiber and in every spectacular color you can imagine. Only available here at Purl Soho’s online yarn store, where every skein is created with care and your creativity in mind!

Constructed out of simple garter stitch rectangles, these hat and hand warmers are classic, chic and totally easy-as-pie. And in Purl Soho’s gorgeous Worsted Twist, they’re incredibly soft and cozy too! Sized for women and men, each kit includes enough yarn to knit up a hat and a pair of hand warmers.
Update: New Colors

September 13, 2017
So what’s new about this kit? The name, of course, but also its earthy new palette, as calm and lovely as a memorable walk in the winter woods. Otherwise, we didn’t tinker with a pattern that wasn’t broken!
Update: ALL Colors!
October 8, 2019
This kit is a classic for a reason but that doesn’t mean we can’t improve on the idea! Each kit still includes two skeins of Worsted Twist 100% merino wool, bamboo knitting needles, and an instructional booklet that guides you every step of the way, but now, instead of just a few Worsted Twist colors to choose from, you get to pick from all of them… just choose your favorite and we’ll build it for you!

These hats and hand warmers are so lovely. Is the pattern available online, or just inside the kit?
I want to know the answer to Kate’s question from years ago. Would just like the pattern. Is it available without purchasing the kit?
Hi Eleanor,
Thanks for writing in! You absolutely can buy all of the items in the kit separately, including the pattern! It can be found here: https://www.purlsoho.com/simple-hand-warmers-and-hat-pattern.html
Best,
Cassy

Hi Hila-
Yes we do! Thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Hi Fannie-
We won't be publishing the pattern on The Bee but it is available for purchase here:
https://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/9273-Purl-Soho-Hat-and-Hand-Warmers-for-Beginners
Thank you!
Molly
What company makes the birch needles that you're including in these kits? 🙂
OK, that's sooo cute. I am not a knitter, but I REALLY want to make these. I crochet, but nothing in that field is quite as sweet and simple. Could you possibly translate this into crochet terms? If not, do you think that after learning the basics of knitting, I would be able to make this? Do you have any good resources for learning to knit?
Thanks!
Hi Lily-
We won't be doing a crochet version of these. If you'd like to see all of our free crochet patterns you can click here: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/crochet-projects/
But if you'd like to learn how to knit this kit can teach you!
Thank you!
Molly
Great! Looking into it. Thanks!!
Thanks! I’m looking into it!
Hi Alice-
The needles included in the kit aren't for sale individually, but they are made in the US in case you were wondering.
We do have a wide selection of wooden needles for sale here: https://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/8-knitting-crochet-knitting-needles
Thanks so much for getting in touch!
Molly
HI Chellsea and Kate-
We aren't currently selling the pattern on its own.
Thank you so much for getting in touch!
Molly
You mentioned (in your message to Fannie) that the pattern is available for purchase. But the link you give leads only to the kit, not to a standalone pattern. May we buy the pattern separately from the kit?
Hi Kate-
Sorry for the confusion. I meant that that pattern is available in the kit. We aren't currently selling the pattern on its own.
Thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Good morning,
I just ordered a kit for the hat & handwarmers. I am wanting to purchase more yarn to make a matching scarf. Will one skein of the worsted twist be enough to knit a scarf?
Thanks,
Barbara
Hi, would you consider a kit for just the hand warmers. I love them. I am not interested in the hat. Or maybe just sell the pattern? Thank you. Diana from San Francisco.
Hi Diana-
We aren't selling the pattern on its own or separating the hand warmers from the hat at the moment but thanks for the suggestion!
Best-
Molly
Hi Barbara-
One skein will not be enough for an adult scarf. You will need at least 2 skeins depending on the length and width.
Let us know if you have any more questions and thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Love this! Was wondering if the kit has enough yard to make two sets of handwarmers instead of handwarmers and a hat? Visiting the parents over the weekend and noticed that my Mom could use a pair of the handwarmers. Thanks
HI Lizabeth,
Definitely! You could, in fact, make than two pairs of hand warmers if you forgo the hat.
Thanks for asking and I hope your mom loves them!
Whitney
Is it possible to buy the pattern? I have searched your online shop, and followed the link above, but have not been successful in find it at all.
Sorry ladies, I just read through the comments again, and noticed you are not selling the pattern!!!
What is the price for the kit?
Hi Sallyjo-
The kit is $62 and you can purchase it here: https://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/9273
Thank you so much for getting in touch!
Molly
very nice….thank you
Thanks for this pattern! I love the simplicity. How much yarn would be needed for each project? I would like to use some worsted weight yarn on hand and want to make sure I have enough.
Also, if I wanted to make this set for a toddler, how could I scale this pattern?
Thanks!
Hi Kitty,
I can’t remember exactly how many yards I used for each project, but I would guess about 150-175 yards for the hat and 75-100 yards for the hand warmers.
For toddler hand warmers, you should cast on for the length from mid-knuckles to a couple of inches past the wrist and knit for about an inch less than the circumference of the toddler’s hand.
Thanks for your questions and good luck!
Whitney
I love the hat! I would like to knit the hat only. Will I need more than one skein of yarn?
Hi Audrey!
I think that the samples did use just a little of the second skein of yarn. I would probably get an extra just to be safe, because it does cut it close!
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
Hi! I am in the process of learning to knit with this kit and I LOVE IT. What’s a good project to do after this one? I’d love to make my newborn a winter hat, but I’m not sure which one I could reasonably attempt as I’m just learning. Thanks! – Lindsey
Hi Lindsey!
You might want to check out our Basic Hats for Everybody here! I would maybe suggest making a hat for yourself starting out on 16″ circular needles first for practice, and then making a newborn hat using the same pattern and knitting on double points!
We’re glad you’re enjoying your new craft!
Thomas
Thank you so much!
I bought this kit and LOVE it as it’s helping me learn to knit! I would like to knit my newborn a hat after this, and am wondering what a good pattern is to try next? I want to learn new skills with the next project, but don’t want to completely overwhelm myself. Thanks!
Hi Lindsey-
Thank you so much for getting in touch. It’s so nice to hear that you’ve been enjoying and learning from this kit!
For your next project I would recommend our Purl Soho Basic Hats for Everyone: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2013/10/10/purl-soho-basic-hats-for-everyone/
This pattern, like most hats, is knit in the round which is a great skill to learn!
Please let us know if you have any more questions and happy knitting!
Molly
Could you please tell me what size needle you use for a mans hat with this pattern? I am using a size eight and when knitting across rows without stretching it the distance is twelve inches” does that sound right for a mans hat? thanks so much.
Hi Linda!
I’d probably use the same needle size, or at least the same gauge called for in the original. Then I’d simply add a few extra (around 5?) stitches to the cast-on, which would add some length to the hat.
Happy Knitting!
Thomas
I have your yarn……..need the patterns please!
Hi Marjorie-
You can purchase the pattern on its own as a download or hard copy here: https://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/9273 Go to the dropdown menu and choose “Pattern Only”
Please let us know if you need any more help!
Molly
Would love to learn how to knit in a circle.
I’m an advanced knitter but I haven’t been able to knit for the last 2-3 years because of bad arthritis, especially in my thumbs. Do you have instructions on different methods of holding needles?
Hello Cindy! We’re so sorry to hear that crafting has become painful for you. We haven’t heard of any specific techniques that may ease your pain (many of us are with you!), but we have heard great reviews about the knitting needles that are square instead of round. Check some of them out here: http://www.knitterspride.com/Materialwise-Details.asp?id=3&mcid=1.
Best of luck and happy crafting! -Alyson
Hi, I just bought this booklet and was wondering if I can use 16 inch #7 circular needles instead for knitting the hat? I figure I just knit 1 row then purl 1 row and so on…How do I decrease then? Or is it best to just use straight needles. Sorry I have so many questions, thanks!
Hi Alissa,
Thanks for writing in to us! I think it’s a great idea to do a garter hat in the round. Your 16″ US 7 needles will do just fine. All you do is cast on and join in the round and knit up as far as the pattern says to before decreasing. When decreasing you’ll want to divide your stitches by four and place markers to indicate where to decrease. Every knit round you’ll decrease two stitches before your markers until you have a few stitches on your needles. You’ll of course need double pointed needles for the top. Best of luck on the hat! Let me know if you have any other questions!
-Adam
I am making this hat, and the stitch that I slip at the beginning of each round doesn’t look right. It is pulling the bottom of the hat so that the hat is starting to roll instead of lie flat. Did I do something wrong?
Hi Brivee,
When you are done knitting your hat it helps to wet block it to get the fabric to lay flat.
I hope this helps,
Carly
What is the first stitch (the slipped knit one) supposed to be for? it’s just kind of hanging off my hat
Hi Brivee,
The fist slipped stitch of the row helps to keep the edge neat and straight but shouldn’t be hanging off of the edge.
Keep us posted!
Carly
Oops I must have messed up then…I ended up bringing a strand of yarn through and knotting it, and then sewing it into the edge of the hat. The hat turned out great though!!
