In 2002, Purl Soho-founder, Joelle Hoverson, opened a tiny yarn shop on New York City’s Sullivan Street and filled it with her passion for natural fibers and textile arts. Joelle’s sister Jennifer Hoverson Jahnke and friend Page Marchese Norman soon joined the ownership team, bringing their own love for craft and design. By 2010, Purl Soho moved to a bigger space on Broome Street with more room for even more supplies, including our own brand yarns, fabrics, tools, and notions. For now, our shop remains closed as a result of the pandemic, but on the bright side, our online shop is still wide open and still chock full of beauty and inspiration!
We sell only things we love. From traditional Peruvian alpaca to rose gold scissors manufactured in Sheffield, England, our products are made by people who care as much as we do about quality and integrity. Many items carry our own Purl Soho label and are only available here on the “Shop” menu of our site. We use these very same supplies to design projects that we share on the “Create” menu. Many patterns are free, and all nourish the maker in you with tips, tutorials, and the knowledge you need to create something wonderful.
The heart of our business is and always has been this community of crafters. We are inspired by traditional fiber arts, modern design, and nature’s creations, but the real beat that keeps us going is yours. That feeling of fulfillment that comes from making with your own two hands? We want that for you! From color advice to fiber recommendations, from video tutorials to one-on-one troubleshooting, we’re here for you every step of the way.
We love to answer questions, share accomplishments, research solutions, and exchange ideas. It’s why we do what we do, so please reach out by leaving a comment or question at the bottom of any pattern or contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org… We can’t wait to talk!
