Continue ShoppingReflection Cowl
The Reflection Cowl pattern perfectly balances two worlds of color in mirrored harmony. Knit in our new Goldenberry Alpaca, it glows with one luminous shade on the outside and another within, a joyful way to experience the extraordinary hand-dyed colors of this very special yarn!

In stockinette stitch, Goldenberry Alpaca reveals its full depth, with subtle dark, medium, and light shades shimmering across the smooth fabric. The knitting itself is wonderfully simple: you start with a Provisional Cast On (easier than you might think, and we have a great tutorial to guide you!), then knit your first color all in stockinette before joining the second and doing the same. A clever modified Three Needle Bind Off folds the whole thing in half, one color reflected inside the other.

The pattern comes in two sizes, a single loop for pared-down warmth or a double loop for more drama… Twist it, fold it, or drape it to let the colors play against each other in ever new ways! You need just one skein of each color for the smaller size, or two of each for the larger.

Goldenberry Alpaca is a dreamy single-ply baby alpaca yarn that feels like a cloud in your hands and knits up into a flowing, opulent fabric. Its smooth spin amplifies the alpaca’s natural luster, while an exquisite halo rises from the surface, giving the yarn a soft, captivating brilliance.

An artisanal hand-dyed yarn, Goldenberry Alpaca is suffused with radiant color on the surface, while a natural ecru core seems to illuminate each shade from within. The palette includes 19 colors drawn from the treasures of nature, from jewel-like Deep Sea Green to burnished Golden Amber to shimmery Silver Bark, each full of warm light.

Choose two colors of Goldenberry Alpaca and join them in an unbroken circle of the reflection and the reflected. Easy to knit and exquisitely gorgeous, your Reflection Cowl will reveal itself round by round as you discover this beautiful yarn’s hand-dyed depths!

NOTES
CONSTRUCTION
You will knit this cowl in one piece, starting with a Provisional Cast On, then joining Color A to work the first half and switching to Color B for the second half. You will finish by placing the cast-on stitches onto spare needles, folding the work in half, and joining the two ends using Color B and a Modified 3-Needle Bind Off.
STITCH MULTIPLE
This pattern is worked over any number of stitches.
PATTERN
NOTE: For help with the Provisional Cast On, visit our Provisional Cast On: One-Step Method Tutorial.
With scrap yarn, crochet hook, and main needles, use a One-Step Provisional Cast On to cast on 110 (255) stitches.
Place marker and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
With Color A, knit every round until piece measures 10½ inches from cast-on edge.
Cut Color A and join Color B.
With Color B, knit every round until piece measures 21 inches from cast-on edge, making sure to have several yards left over for binding off.
FINISHING
Carefully slip provisional cast-on stitches onto spare needles, removing scrap yarn as you go.
Weave in tails on wrong side of work.
Fold piece in half at color change so wrong sides are facing each other. Hold piece so working needle and spare needle are parallel, with working needles on the outside.
With other end of working needles and still using Color B, bind off all stitches using a Modified 3-Needle Bind Off.
Weave in remaining end and gently wet block.

Hi,
Any chance of dark vs light colors running when you hand wash them? I was thinking about Lotus Pink and Heirloom White or Purple Freesia . Thank you.
Hi Pam,
Thank you for asking! We’re happy to share that we didn’t encounter any of the colors running during our colorfast test. This means you are safe to pair any colors you’d like. Heirloom White paired with either of those hues sounds lovely!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Simple but oh so beautiful. Ill need to check out the cast on but a great takeeway project. Thank you
Hi Sue,

Hi Janelee,
Thank you so much for asking! We knit our samples in the following sizes and colors: the bright pink and deep teal blue cowl in the twice-around size uses Goldenberry Alpaca in Deep Sea Green (Color A) and Lotus Pink (Color B). The light pink and golden green cowl in the once-around size uses the colors Pink Sky (Color A) and Yellow Pear (Color B). Lastly, the light gray and gold cowl in the once-around size uses Silver Bark (Color A) and Golden Amber (Color B).
I hope this helps, and please let us know if you have any other questions!
Kindly,
Cat
Hi, I read through. I would love to start knitting this piece and purchase the yarn and the pattern. But I am confused about how to link and order or get started.

Straight needless..can they worry
Hi Libby,
Thank you for reaching out! I’m afraid this cowl cannot be knit on straight needles as this pattern is knit in the round unfortunately. For a cowl knit on straight needles, I’d recommend checking out our Timeless Cowl Pattern which can a wonderful alternative if you skip the purl rows! You could ultimately knit two panels and seam them together for a similar look to this one!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Love the colors. Any chance you could suggest a few more color combos? Many thanks.
Hi Judy,
We’d be happy to make a few more suggestions! The possibilities feel endless so please let us know if the color pairings below are helpful at all!
1. Heirloom White + Pink Sky
2. Ripe Strawberry + Yellow Sultana
3. Iceberg Blue + Pink Sky
4. Blue Parakeet + Silver Bark
5. Golden Amber + Yellow Sultana
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Hi Gavriella,
What yarn would you combine with Wild Juneberry for this pattern?
Thanks!
Ooo—Great color!! I’d recommend Purple Thistle or Pink Sky!
Happy knitting!
Gavriella
Hello,
I love the look of this yarn, but don’t wear cowls or shawls! Can you suggest a scarf pattern that would work well with this yarn?
Thank you.
Anjali
Hi Anjali,
Thank you for writing in and we totally understand! We have some wonderful patterns that would really well with Goldenberry Alpaca! I’d recommend either the Smocking Stitch Wrap, Laurel Wrap or Elementary wrap. Any of the patterns would work perfectly but you can also use Goldenberry for any of our DK weight wrap and scarf patterns. I hope you find one of these patterns as your next perfect project but please let us know if you have any other questions!
All the best,
Gavriella
Thank you Gavriella. What do you think of the mistake rib scarf?
Thanks,
Anjali
Absolutely! That is a great option!
Thank you Gavriella.
Anjali
Hi. Thank you for this lovely pattern. I am not a very confident knitter and I got reqlly confused with cast on provisional stitches. Why do we need those? Can we just knit as a “scarf” and then connect? Is there a simple tutorial video how to start this all together vs separate steps / stitches?
Thank you
Hi Ksenia,
You can definitely knit a flat scarf and seam it if you’d like. This pattern is just written in a way that allows knitters to get a nice seamless finish without having to sew anything at the end. The provisional cast on allows your stitches to be on hold until you are ready to knit close your cowl with the 3 needle bind off but you can certainly work it in a way you are more comfortable with.
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
thank you! I will try
Hi there.
Wonderful simple pattern. I’m curious to how the cowl is finished where the two colors meet? Is it just folded in half? The photos look like it is finished on both sides. Similar to a crochet edge but it isn’t in the instructions.
Just looking fo r clarification.
Thank you.
Robert
Hi Robert,
Great question! We used a Modified 3-Needle Bind Off for the nice clean finish. So no crochet hook needed!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I just have to say that your tutotial on one step provisional cast on was brilliant! so much easier than chaining first and then picking up. I always get a kick out of learning something new. thanks so much!
Hi Katherine,
We are thrilled to hear you found this tutorial! Happy knitting and please let me know if you have any questions!
All the best,
Gavriella
The pattern lists a yarn requirement of 2 skeins for each color. Could you tell me if this is for the once-around or the twice-around version of the cowl? Thanks!
Hi Jolene,
Great question! You need 1 skein of each color for the once-around cowl and 2 skeins of each color for the twice-around. In case the language of knitting patterns is new to you, this information is given in the Materials section of the pattern, where we write “Color A: 1 (2) skein(s).” To interpret this, you need one more piece of information, which is in the Size section, where we list the sizes as “Once-Around (Twice-Around)” This means that everywhere in the pattern you see a number followed by another number in parentheses, the first number is for the once-around size and the second number (in parentheses) is for the twice-around cowl. With all that sorted out, I hope you love your cowl… Goldenberry Alpaca is really so beautiful, you can’t go wrong!
Best,
Whitney
Thank you for your tutorials. They are very helpful to me!
I just finished making my reflection cowl! I’m a relative beginner- it was my first time doing a provisional cast on, and my second time ever knitting in the round- but I made it and it’s beautiful. Thanks for the pattern and the tutorials!
Hi Rachael!
Thank you for your comment. We’re so happy you enjoyed this pattern!
Happy knitting,
Megan
Hi ! I love this yarn and am hoping to make a standard scarf for my husband — not too wide (8 inches or so). Do you have a suggestion as to how many stitches I should cast on and the pattern for stockinette? Also, do you I need to worry about the edges rolling with this stitch? If so, open to other beginner suggestions.
Thanks!
Hi Colby!
Thank you for your question! If you’re thinking about using Goldenberry Alpaca for the scarf, we’d recommend casting on 48 stitches using US 6 needles and following the instructions from our Simple Stockinette Scarf. The slipped stitches at the start of each row in that pattern will help keep the edges from rolling.
Let me know if you have any other questions! We’re always happy to help.
Warmly,
Megan
