Chevron Baby Blanket in Serif
Harkening back to the zig-zag blankets draped over every couch in the 1970s, we’ve updated our free Chevron Baby Blanket knitting pattern so you can make it in our wonderfully soft and charming 100% Pima cotton yarn, Serif!

We created eight Chevron Baby Blanket Bundles to make it a snap to plan this colorful chevron blanket knitting pattern, with color palettes ranging from “a little ‘70s inspired” to “thoroughly modern.” Each bundle includes eight colors of beautiful, bouncy Serif.

Serif is a tactile joy, made from a lustrous single ply of cotton wrapped with a thin cotton thread to create an undulating strand. You’ll knit with two strands held together, making for an incredibly plush, slightly nubbly fabric that knits up in a flash.

Knitting two strands also makes the Chevron Stripes Blanket thick and cushy enough for tummy time and irresistibly cozy, too. A lovely gift to welcome a new baby, it’s destined to be their Linus blanket!

Simple increases and decreases create the garter-stitch chevron pattern, and fun, colorful stripes keep things interesting as you knit.

We’re so excited to launch four new colors of Serif, which you’ll find sprinkled throughout the Chevron Baby Blanket Bundles. Take a look at all of the bundles below, and be sure to check out new Rosy Pink, Red Hellebore, Pale Aster, and Blue Agave!

Pick your favorite Chevron Baby Blanket Bundle or create your own palette from Serif’s palette of nature-inspired colors and create a blanket that everyone at the baby shower will want to squeeze!

GAUGE
16 stitches and 18 rows = 4 inches in chevron pattern with yarn doubled
SIZE
Finished Dimensions: Approximately 25 inches wide x 32 inches long
NOTES
YARN DOUBLED
For this pattern you’ll use Serif doubled. To do this, you can either pull one strand from the inside of the ball and one strand from the outside, or divide each skein into two even balls and pull a strand from each.
STITCH MULTIPLE
This pattern works over a multiple of 14 plus 2 stitches.
PATTERN
With Color A held double (see Notes), cast on 100 stitches. We used a basic Long Tail Cast On. (Try not to leave too long a tail when you cast on so that all of your stripes will be approximately the same length.)
*Row 1 (right side): K1, slip slip knit (ssk), *k10, knit two together (k2tog), ssk, repeat from * to last 13 stitches, k10, k2tog, k1. [14 stitches decreased]
Row 2 (wrong side): K6, *[knit into front and back (kfb)] 2 times, k10, repeat from * to last 8 stitches, [kfb] 2 times, k6. [14 stitches increased]
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until stripe measures approximately 4 inches or, if using Serif, until you have used as much of Color A as you can, ending with Round 2.
Drop Color A.
Repeat from * with Colors B–H, making sure to always switch colors on the right side. For Color H, end one row early with Row 1 and about five yards left for binding off.
Bind-Off Row (wrong side): Working as for Row 2, bind off 5 stitches, *[knit into next stitch and leave stitch on left needle, bind off 1 stitch on right needle, knit into back of stitch on left needle and let stitch drop off needle, bind off 1 stitch on right needle] 2 times, bind off 10 stitches (as usual), repeat from * to last 8 stitches, [knit into next stitch and leave stitch on left needle, bind off 1 stitch on right needle, knit into back of stitch on left needle and let stitch drop off needle, bind off 1 stitch on right needle] 2 times, bind off 6 stitches (as usual), pull yarn through last stitch.
FINISHING
Weave in the ends and wet block as desired.

I’d love to try this blanket! But greatly prefer doing garter stitch with purl stitches every row, rather than knit stitches. Is there a way to switch the SSK (row 1) and KFB (row 2) into a purl mode? Thanks for your help!
Hi Penny,
Great question! The purled version of a k2tog is a p2tog, and the purled version of an ssk is an ssp. We demonstrate these stitches in our tutorial, which I’ve linked to!
All the best,
Lili
Thanks so much, Lili, perfect! I’m always on the lookout for simple stitches that create an interesting pattern, and this looks like a good one.
Penny
Hi I’m interested inthis pattern not able to read it will it be possible to have it on you tube as I really lilke this pattern blanket thanks
Kind Regards
Irene

I would like to make this blanket larger. Perhaps 36X48. I purchased two bundles to make sure I have enough yarn. Can you help me with how many stitches I should cast on and how many rows for each color? Thank you for all y’all do!
Hi Deborah,
Thanks for writing in! To adjust your cast-on number, just multiply the number of stitches per inch (4 stitches, according to the gauge of the pattern) by the width that you would like. Then, round the resulting number to the nearest multiple of 14 + 2.
In this case, here’s what the calculations would look like: 4 x 36 = 144 –> 142 stitches (142 is the closest multiple of 14 + 2).
I hope this helps you get started on this project, as well as modify other patterns in the future!
All the best,
Lili
Oops! I would also need to determine how many additional rows for each color to increase length to 48”…thank you for your help!
Hi Deborah,
One thing you could do is knit one full section to your preferred dimensions and measure/weigh out how much yarn was consumed in this section. This will give you an idea of how large of stripes you can make and also how much yarn to use in each section!
All the best,
Gavriella
Thanks!
Hi, I love the Chevron baby blanket pattern and would like to make one that’s twice the size. Sorry, I’m very poor in math. How many stitches must I cast on to make it twice as big, in multiples of 14 = 2? Could you please work out the CO stitches for me. Thanks very much! Much obliged. Best regards. Irene
Hi Irene,
Thanks for writing in! Before I show you how to do this type of modification, could you please clarify what you mean by twice the size?
Do you mean you’d like both the width and length to be twice the original width and length? This would mean the blanket would measure 50 inches by 64 inches, and you would need 4 bundles to knit it, since the surface area is 4 times the original surface area.
Or do you mean you’d like the surface area to be twice the original surface area (so you would need 2 bundles to knit it)? In this case, the length and width would be shorter than double the original length and width.
Let me know, and then we can go from there!
All the best,
Lili
This is a lovely design and the colors are wonderful. I was very surprised that the finished size is so small. It is more of a doll blanket than a baby blanket. 25″ x 32″ is so tiny for a $89.25 project (on sale). I ordered the yarn at my daughter’s request for a baby shower present. Now I feel that I must order another bundle in order to make a decent sized blanket. 32″ x 40″ would be a better size.
Hi Eva,
We are so sorry this blanket is smaller than you realized! This blanket would be great as a baby blanket or even as a lap blanket, and can be also easily modified. To knit this blanket in a larger size, you can adjust your cast on number to any multiple of 14 and then add 2 stitches. I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions and we’d be happy to help!
All the best,
Gavriella
Such a beautiful and cozy blanket. Could you help me design my own version of it?
I was thinking to limit the colors to Heirloom white, Turquoise Tint and Blue Agave. Will these colors look good together?
What measurements do I need for a throw for a Full size bed. ?
I want to make the width of the strips according to the Fibonacci Sequence. How much yarn will I need of each color?
Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.
Hi Fran,
That sounds like a lovely idea and the colors sound wonderful! To adjust your cast-on number, just multiply the number of stitches per inch (4 stitches, according to the gauge of the pattern) by the width that you would like. Then, round the resulting number to the nearest multiple of 14 + 2.
To make similar stripes as we have knit here, I’d recommend getting 3 skeins of each color per stripe for a blanket size similar to a full size bed. This way you can swap the yardage per stripe according to the color sequence you like best.
I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Thank you for your reply.
What size should I be aiming for to create a throw for a full size bed?
Is there a true white I could use instead of the heirloom white?
If I alternate the width of the stripes according to Fibonacci’s sequence how much yarn do I need of each color?
Hi Fran,
I did a quick search and it looks like a full size bed is about 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. So I’d recommend working dimensions along those lines. I’m afraid Heirloom White is the purest white we offer at this time but we find that it works wonderfully with any project that calls for white, especially if other colors are used to complement it!
Yardage for this sequence can be pretty tricky but one thing you can do is estimate the yardage per stripe and plan your blanket from there. I’d recommend getting 3 skeins per stripe for a blanket size similar to a full size bed using the same gauge and stripe thickness we used here on our pattern. Then you can decide how many stripes of each color you would like and estimate your yardage from there.
All the best,
Gavriella
Thank you. That is very helpful.
Hi Purl Soho Team,
I too absolutely fell in love with the color combinations of this classic chevron afghan design. Like others here, I would love to make a full size blanket version at 50 X 64. I unfortunately am having difficulty with the conversion step of ’rounding’ to 14+2. Do you mean divide by 16, or divide by 14 and then just add 2? I apologize for not being able to figure this out on my own. Any help would be so much appreciated. And then how many bundles should I buy for this size? Thank you so much! I love Purl Soho and am longtime customer. But just needed a little more help on how to do this one.
Thank you! Shirley
Hi Shirley,
It’s no problem at all! While I do not have an exact estimate of this size, I believe 4 bundles would suffice. This would work out to 4 skeins of each color for your blanket. You are on the right track for estimating your stitch count! You will want your multiple to be divisible by 14 and then add 2 additional stitches to that number. I hope this helps!
All the best,
Gavriella
HiGavriella!!
Thank you so much for confirming this for me so quickly. I am super excited to get this one started. 😁
Now…I just need to get my bundles!!
Best wishes for a great evening.
Shirley
You are very welcome! Happy knitting!
Hi
I am starting to knit this beautiful blanket. I am a lefty and I’m struggling with the ssk stitch. Would you be able to word it for me so that I can do it with the left needle. It comes out all wrong when I try. I did check out your tutorial but I still couldn’t get it
Thank you so much!
Hi Blimie,
I am sorry to hear you are having a rough time with this pattern! I’m afraid we don’t currently have tutorials on this technique using the left needle but I saw some wonderful tutorials for this on Youtube! I would recommend searching ‘SSK left handed’ on youtube or a similar platform to get a better visual of how you can work this stitch. I hope this helps but please let us know if you have any other questions!
All the best,
Gavriella
I am currently working on the Grassy Dune colorway as a cuddle blanket for my three year old grandson. I told him I chose the colors because they were dinosaur colors. He spent a few days with us and would check my progress when he got up in the morning. He called it a “dinosaur rainbow”. Just as an aside, I normally get gauge with the suggested needles. I’m using the suggested needles and my blanket is measuring 30×40 inches. So the advertised finished size may be on the conservative side.
Hi Ann,
Thank you so much for sharing this story! It’s possibly the cutest thing we have heard today!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Update, the blankets have been delivered to the grandbabies (2 years and 3 years old). They are currently on vacation. I got pictures of them in their car seats with their new blankets AND sound asleep in a hotel bed tangled together as a mass of toddlers and blankets. My daughter reports they are huge fans.
Oh Ann! Thank you so much for the wonderful update! We are thrilled to hear this!
Thanks for the reply!
Maybe you can help me…. When I change color yarns it says to change after round two. When I do that then the right side becomes the wrong side. Since the stitches of the new color show on the right side. I’m not sure if this has to do with me being left handed.
Thanks for your help
Hi Blimie,
You are very welcome! One thing to keep in mind is that row 2 will always be your wrong side row. So whether you are knitting left or right handed, your colors will still change as you are knitting the right side row. This means your color changed should appear only on the back of your work. I hope this helps clarify but please let me know if you have any questions!
Warmly,
Gavriella
Ready to begin this adorable blanket, but not looking forward to weaving in the ends. Is it possible to do an I cord edge to solve that?
Hi Patti,
If you want to take care of those ends before the end result, I’d recommend knitting in your ends as you go! I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Thanks for the quick reply!
You are very welcome! We are always happy to help!
I tried pulling from both ends that was a disaster 🙁
Now i rolled a ball then tried to divide in 2 by eyeballing it in 2
Whats best way to wirk serif doubled?
Hi Marilyn,
We recommend knitting with strands from both the center pull and the outside of your caked yarn. If you find this too fiddly though, I’d recommend weighing your yarn into two equal size balls.
All the best,
Gavriella
Hi, I’d like to make a crib size using a single strand, one color of Serif. What size needle and how many stitches please!, thank you!
Jody
Hi Jody,
Thank you for your question! To modify this pattern you will want to start with a gauge swatch, I’d recommend using a US 4-6 (3.5-4 mm). You will then measure your stitches per inch and multiply that number by the desired width of your blanket and that will give you your cast on number. One thing to keep in mind is that this blanket pattern is worked over a multiple of 14 +2, so you will want to round the resulting number to the nearest multiple of 14 + 2. I hope this helps but please let us know if you have any other questions!
All the best,
Gavriella
Thank you. I haven’t swatched in forever it seems! I’m challenged to figure how many skeins I need, sorry. On 5’s, 36” square, how many skeins? Thank you so much!
Hi Jody,
Could you provide me with your stitches per inch as well as the weight and size of your swatch? This can help us better visualize your gauge and make a rough estimate. You would probably be okay with a single bundle but it’s hard to tell without these measurements.
In the mean time, I will keep an eye out for your reply.
Thank you Gabriella. I swatched but had trouble with the pattern counting the number of stitches. I bought 8 skeins of Serif today and will have a friend help me in person. Thank you so much!
You are very welcome Jody! Happy making!
Which YouTube tutorial can I refer for binding rows ?
Hi Kumiko,
Thank you for writing in but I’m afraid we don’t have a tutorial on this exact bind off. If you let me know the issues you are running into though, I’d be happy to assist you!
All the best,
Gavriella
Hi,
I’m knitting a swatch of the pattern – first time ever – by following the your instructions . And I think, it is coming out quite as you photo of the blanket.
I have one question, please. What is this mean? How a long tail is related to the length of the stripes? applies to one color blanket?
Thanks in advance.
DD
“Try not to leave too long a tail when you cast on so that all of your stripes will be approximately the same length”
Hi Diana,
Great question! We suggest being careful not to use too long of a tail so that you have enough yarn for all your stripes to be the same size. If you your cast on tail is too long, you might run the risk of having a shorter stripe for your first row. I hope this helps!
All the best,
Gavriella
Hi. I just finished knitting the chevron baby blanket, and I’d like to add a border to tidy up the edges of the blanket. My first thought was to add an I-cord edging, but I want to be sure i don’t lose the waves on the top and bottom of the blanket. Is there a better idea for a border? Or do you have advice on how best to add an I-cord without flattening the waves?
Hi Kristin,
Thank you for asking! You could definitely knit an i-cord edge onto your blanket for a nice clean finish. Just be sure to follow the curves of your blanket and your waves should stay intact. I recommend working the ‘corners’ twice just to be sure the i-cord follows along with your waves, meaning working into those pointed stitches twice. I hope this helps!
All the best,
Gavriella
I am very happy to find this yarn, 1 ply wrapped with a single thread of cotton. This matches the type of yarn for a baby blanket pattern I have had for a long time. Can you tell me how closely the yarn matches the one called for: Mission Falls 1824 (discontinued). Its gauge is 18 stitches/34 rows=4 in. with size 5 needles. Would I need to use two strands of yarn?
Hi Suzann,
Thank you for writing in! I’m afraid I am not too familiar with this yarn but after a quick search, I’d say they are very similar in thickness and construction. You can definitely knit with a single strand of Serif and can find more details about this yarn on the product page under the Product Details section. I hope this helps!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I found the bind off instructions to be confusing. I am an intermediate knitter, and I have knit much more complex patterns. I think you should have a link to a demonstration of the bind off.
Hi Ellen,
Thank you for your suggestion! I will be sure to share it with the team. In the meantime, if you need further assistance on this bind off, could you please email us at [email protected]. We’d be happy to help you out further!
All the best,
Gavriella
I am thinking that the chevron blanket could look beautiful in the confetti yarn. What do you think? If I held confetti yarn double what size needle would you recommend? Quantity?
Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for writing in! Since Pepper is also a DK weight yarn like Serif, you could definitely use it for this pattern, and I think it would look beautiful! Since it’s the same weight yarn, you would need the same yardage as listed in the pattern materials.
To determine what size needles to use, you’ll need to knit up a gauge swatch before starting the project. You may need to size up or down your needles in order to get the correct gauge! If you would like to learn more about this, we have a handy tutorial called All About Gauge.
Hope this helps you get started, and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any other questions!
All the best,
Lili
Thank you for your speedy reply.
Hi
I will be knitting this blanket in pepper. My yarn arrives today (speedy -thank you)! I have knit a swatch in a while but will do one for this project as I am changing yarn and overall size.
Do I cast on and off in pattern for my swatch? or will a garter stitch do?
Hi Carolyn,
Yes, I would recommend binding off in pattern since your swatch will be in pattern! The cast-on is just a normal long tail cast-on, so you don’t need to do anything special for that.
All the best,
Lili
Hello, I ordered a bundle to make the baby blanket but I don’t know how to transition the skein into two even balls so I can knit with two strands of yarn? Maybe there is a tool to make the skein into a ball that would allow to draw two strands from inside and outside as mentioned?
Thank you.
Jeanine
Hi Jeanine,
Thanks for writing in! You can either wind the skein into a center-pull cake so that you can pull from both ends, or you can wind it into two separate balls and pull from each. For the first option, you can wind using a swift and ball winder, or you can wind the yarn by hand around some sort of cylindrical object (an empty toilet paper roll works great!), leaving the starting end of the yarn free so you can pull from it later. Hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
Hi there
I’ve finished my forth blanket from Purl Soho designs and love them. I didn’t wet block the first two blankets (didn’t know it was a thing). Tried to wet block the third blanket (it was a different pattern and yarn to this), and the colours ran and it destroyed the blanket.
I’m now petrified to wet block this forth blanket. I’ve read every blog or site about wet blocking. I note that the yarn details say it can be machine cold washed and tumbled dried low. So I’m guessing a wet block would be ok but could the colours run??
Hi Hannah,
Thanks for reaching out! We have not had any experience of the dye bleeding in this yarn. However, if you’d like to double check before throwing it in the washing machine, you can submerge a small amount of each color in a glass of water. Leave the yarn to soak for a few hours, and then check to see if the water is still clear. If it is, then you’re good to go! If not, then I’d recommend putting a color catcher in with the blanket for the first few times you wash it. This would soak up any excess dye, preventing any bleeding in the future!
I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions!
All the best,
Gavriella
Amazing thank you so much. I will check with the piece of each colour of the yarn in a cup, thank you. I wonder if when I did it (colours were cream, yellow, light grey and dark grey), maybe the luke warm I did was too warm.
So as this yarn is machine washable does that mean it doesn’t need to be wetblocked before going through the washing machine? Or can I just put it through the washing machine on cold as instructed on the skein packet before giving it to the recipient? Sorry for all the questions, thank you.
Hi Hannah,
You can definitely just put it in the washing machine and dryer! If you want to even out the stitches or shape overall, then you can let it air dry flat after washing instead of putting it in the dryer, which effectively wet blocks it.
All the best,
Lili
Amazing thank you so much!
Hi! I missed this beautiful blanket kit the first time around, any idea when some of the Serif colors will be back in stock. Thanks so much!
Hi Barbara,
Thanks for reaching out! We’re hoping to have all colors of Serif back in stock by mid-May. We’re so sorry for the delay and are anxious to see it back too!
If that’s not too late for you, we’d recommend signing up to be notified when it returns by going to the product page for Serif, selecting each color you’re interested in, and entering your email address. This way, you’ll be among the first to know!
I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any other questions.
All the best,
Lili
