Baby Socks In New Colors
Baby feet make most of us crazy with love. Chubby little blocks with squirming tiny piggies, somehow we heed their call, and when you’re a knitter, that call is loud and clear, “Make me some hand knits!”
Our Baby Socks pattern has been around for awhile, but not like this before! Our Season Alpaca has seven new members of its color family, which makes for pretty festive feetsies!
Knit from the top down with all the details of an adult sock (heel flap, gusset, and toe shaping), our Baby Socks are also a great way to learn the twists and turns of sock-knitting in one afternoon!
And if you’re an old hand at sock knitting, well then, welcome to the ultimate gift: one precious little pair, a stack of several, or the toe-topping part of a layette set.
Each skein of Season Alpaca makes 4 (or even 5!) pairs of Baby Socks for babies from just born to one year old. The best part? Getting to dress those little feet!
If you love the yarn used in this project, you’ll love all of our other yarn, too! Explore our 35+ lovingly created yarn collections, in nearly every natural fiber and spectacular color you can imagine… Only available here at Purl Soho’s online yarn shop!

P.S. Please note that this same pattern is featured in Joelle Hoverson’s More Last Minute Knitted Gifts. If you own that book, just follow the directions as given, using Season Alpaca instead of the recommended yarn. If you don’t have the book, we’re sad to report that it is no longer in print but happy to say you can purchase the Baby Socks Pattern here!

Hello
Ive been working on this pattern. But cant figure out for the life of me how to turn my work so wrong side is facing me on 3 DPNs. Im so confused. Please help. I really want to make these baby socks for my soon to be born grand daughter. Thank you so much.
Hi Laurie,
Thanks for writing in! It would be the same as if you are turning a normal sock inside out, just with the addition of the needles! You can easily turn the work by pushing the fabric through the center of your needles so that the wrong side is facing outward!
I hope this helps!

Hello,
is it possible to knit this pattern using magic loop needels?
Thank you!
Hi Joanna,
Yes, you can absolutely use magic loop to knit these socks!
All the best,
Lili
I am trying to cast on the pattern says to cast on 3 needles. do you cast on all stiches, then divide between the 3 needles?
trying new cast on-elastic sock cast on, too
Hi Paulette,
Thanks for reaching out. I always find it easier to cast on all the stitches onto one needle and then slip the stitches to the other two needles to distribute them. Hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
Hi! I wanted to buy the pattern but I keep getting an error message. Is it unavailable for purchase? Also, can I use buttercup cotton instead of the alpaca?
Hi Maru,
Thanks so much for reaching out to us about this! We’ve updated the broken link, so the pattern page for the Baby Socks should be available now. Here’s the link!
Thanks again for letting us know!
All the best,
Carly
Hello,
This is my first sock and I’m stuck on the instruction for the gusset. I have the right side facing me, with six stitches on the needle, the yarn is on the stitch furthest to the right. Do I use that yarn to pick up the six stitches from the heel flap, going down the right side of the heel flap? Can you help me?
Thank you.
Hi Joan,
Thanks for reaching out. You have the right idea, but it sounds like your working yarn is on the opposite side of where it should be! Before picking up the 6 stitches along the heel flap, you’ll need to knit across these 6 stitches so that the yarn comes over to the left side. Then you’ll be in perfect position to pick up these stitches!
If you’re still having trouble envisioning this, I’d recommend sending a photo of your work to [email protected] so we can take a closer look!
All the best,
Lili
Thanks so much, Lili!
One more question please. When one picks up 6 stitches, do you pick up the first six stitches or are you meant to skip some, since there are more than six rows on the heel flap? thanks so much!
Hi Joan,
In this pattern, you will pick up 1 stitch for every 2 rows! Since you slipped the first stitch of every row in the WORK HEEL FLAP section, you should only be seeing 6 spaces to pick up a stitch in. So you can pick up 1 stitch in every space and end up with exactly 6 stitches along the whole heel flap!
All the best,
Lili
fantastic! thank you for this explanation!
Can these socks be knitted using flexi needles?
Hi Julie,
Yes, you can absolutely use FlexiFlips for this pattern! I’d just recommend placing stitch markers where the beginnings and ends of the DPNs would have been, since the pattern is written with that in mind.
All the best,
Lili
When I work the heel flap, I’m slipping the stitches purlwise with the yarn in back. It does look right. Should the yarn be in front?
I meant to say, it does not look right.
Hi,
When you are working the heel flap and slip the stitches purlwise, do you slip them with the yarn in front?
Hi Julie,
That’s a great question! On all right side rows, you will be slipping each stitch with the yarn in back, and on all wrong side rows, you will be slipping each stitch with the yarn in front. That makes it so the floats from these slipped stitches remain on the wrong side at all times!
I noticed that this isn’t specified in the pattern though, so I’ve asked our design team to add it in. They’ll update the pattern to always make note of wyib or wyif to avoid any more confusion going forward!
All the best,
Lili
pattern on website says to use sz 4 needles but when I bought and printed pattern it says to use size 2 needles ( under materials and tools.)
what size needle is recommended
from the picutre I would guess size 4 needles but not sure and don’t have time to experiment
Hi Patty,
We recommend size 4 needles for this pattern! I double checked both the website and the pattern PDF, and I’m only seeing size 4 mentioned. Can you please specify exactly where you’re seeing size 2 needles? We’d like to fix that to avoid confusion going forwards!
All the best,
Lili
