Inside Out Knit Hat
Where there are knits, there are purls! Our so-called Inside Out Knit Hat relegates the knits to the inside and brings the purls into the light. Inside out, knit side in, tomato, to-mah-to!
Reverse stockinette, in this case, is a wonderfully nubby field of color, like a bowlful of jelly beans, so incredibly tactile and interesting. We love it, but like most knitters, we prefer knitting to purling… So don’t worry, you knit this one, then turn it inside out!
The beauty, of course, is in the yarn. That’s our new Lovebird! Created in partnership with Manos Del Uruguay, one of everyone’s favorite spinners and dyers, Lovebird is full of spunk and adventure, beauty and joy!
Handspun by Manos Del Uruguay’s artisan-owned cooperatives, Lovebird is 100% superwash merino, loosely plied in a bulky weight. Nice and plump, it is bursting with snuggly softness!
Once spun, Manos’s artisans dip Lovebird into kettles of mind-boggling color. Bouquets of cherry red and hot pink, chartreuse and violet, they harness the rainbow in each and every skein!
Choose from a dozen extraordinary colors, plus un-dyed Heirloom White. From rollicking Firecracker to mellow Licorice, thank you, Manos Del Uruguay, for igniting our imaginations and for taking us on your joy ride!
If you love the yarn used in this project, you’ll love all of our other yarn, too! Explore our 35+ lovingly created yarn collections, in nearly every natural fiber and spectacular color you can imagine… Only available here at Purl Soho’s online yarn shop!

Materials
- 1 (1, 1-2, 2, 2, 2) skein(s) of Purl Soho’s Lovebird, 100% superwash merino wool. Each skein is approximately 75-85 yards/ 100-110 grams; approximately 53 (66, 95, 116, 136, 154) yards required.

Our Return Policy has all the details!
For Pom Pom (Optional)

Cut yarn and pull tail through remaining stitches.
Weave the ends into the knit side, turn piece purl-side out, and wet block before attaching the pom pom.
Pom Pom (optional)
If you’re using Purl Soho’s Pom Pom Maker Set, use the Large (Large, Extra Large, Jumbo, Jumbo, Jumbo) Pom Pom Maker, the 2½ (2½, 3, 4, 4, 4)-inch Trim Guide, and a skein of Super Soft Merino. Follow the instructions in our Pom Pom Tutorial.
Attach Pom Pom

What is reverse stockinette stitch?
Thank you!
Hi Lauren,
Thanks for reaching out! You knit this hat inside out, starting with a short reverse stockinette brim (meaning you are knitting so the purls are facing outward), then continuing in stockinette stitch. At the end, you will turn it inside out do that the purl-side is facing outward!
All the best,
Gianna
Hello –
I had the same question – ‘what is reverse stockinette stitch.’ As I read the instructions, am I correct that the ‘reverse stockinette’ means you purl every row for the appropriate number of rows to make the brim, then swith to knit every row for the rest of the hat? Then turn it inside out.
Thanks –
Hi Barbara,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes, that is correct!
All the best,
Gianna
What size needles r you suggesting t?
Hi M,
Thanks for reaching out! For this pattern you will need a US 10.5 16″ circular needles and a set of US 10.5 Double Pointed needles!
All the best,
Gianna
These hats are so adorable!!!
These are gorgeous and fun.
I have #10.5, 16 inch circular needles, but not #10.5 double pointed needles.
Can I finish the hat on #10 double pointed needles?
I love Manos Del Uruguay and knitted a beautiful sweater coat using their yarn about 40 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child!
Hi Randi,
Thanks for reaching out and for your kind words! Since they are so close in size you may be fine to use the us 10 DPNs to finish off the hat! I would recommend working up a little gauge swatch with the 10 1/2 and 10 and compare the two to see how close it is and if it will have a big effect on the finish of the hat!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!
Gianna
Do you have an equivalent cotton weight yarn to do this pattern in? Thanks
Hi Carol,
Thanks for reaching out! We don’t have a cotton yarn at this same weight, but you could achieve a similar gauge by holding something like Blue Sky Fibers’s Worsted Cotton doubled! I would just recommend working a gauge swatch prior to beginning to ensure you are consistent!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!
Gianna
This will be my first knitted hat in the round using double pointed needles. In this pattern when do you change to DPN’s?
Hi Caroline,
Thanks for reaching out! Once you start the CROWN sections and begin the decreases you will switch to the DPNs when it starts to get a little tight over the circular needles! Our Double Pointed Needles tutorial is an excellent resource to use!
All the best,
Gianna
Hi,
I’m interested in making this hat for my 1 year old grandson but wonder if you have any photos of the “Meadow” color way knit up into a hat. I’m trying to ascertain if it looks more pink or more blue in a finished project.
Thanks,
Susan
Hi Susan,
Thanks for reaching out! We do not have a sample of the hat knit in Meadow. Because this yarn is hand dyed in small batches, dye lots will vary and may differ even from skein to skein, somewhat even from the photos here. The Meadow color way is a beautiful blend of white, red, blue and yellow mixing together to create spots of pink, purple, green and orange making this an excellent shade for all genders!
All the best,
Gianna
Hi,
Just wondering if Manos Franca would be a good substitute for Lovebird? I have some Franca in my stash…
Thanks!
Hi Cindy,
Thanks for reaching out! Franca is a bit of a heavier gauge than Lovebird (US 13-15 vs. US 10-11) I would recommend working a gauge swatch with the Franca with the needle size we recommend in the pattern and see how it compares!
All the best,
Gianna
Maybe I’m just missing it, but how many skeins for a baby, how many for adult?
Thank you
Hi Mary,
Thanks for reaching out! You can find that information under the MATERIALS section of the pattern! For a Baby (Toddler, Kid, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large) you will need 1 (1, 1, 2, 2, 2) skein(s).
All the best,
Gianna
Hi, Beautiful yarn and the hat pattern looks easy enough for beginner knitters( grand kids). Could you suggest a few less expensive yarns for beginning projects. Donna
Hi Donna,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes this would be a great pattern for a beginner knitter! Our Lovebird yarn is a bulky weight yarn so you could substitute it for any bulky weight. I would recommend our Super Soft Merino, Big Good Wool or even Brooklyn Tweed’s Quarry!
All the best,
Gianna
This yarn is not-to-be-believed beautiful! Will you be restocking the sold- out colors? And could I make this hat with gentle giant as well?
Hi Gray,
Thanks for reaching out and for your kind words! I can’t say exactly when the colors will be back in stock but hopefully soon! I recommend adding your email on the Lovebird product page under the color you would like and we will email you as soon as it is available again! Gentle Giant is a big of a havier gauge so I wouldn’t recommend it for this hat but our other yarn Super Soft Merino would be a perfect substitution.
All the best,
Gianna
Sizes for children are always a challenge for me. Actually most sizing is concerning on any given day. Finished circumference vs head circumference etc etc. Then pondering the ease of the fabric created. In general what are the ages for baby, toddler, and kid? How do designers come up with these sizes?
The yarn is sooo fun! Wishing I had ordered more but so many WIPs!
Thanks! S
Hi Deneise,
Thanks for reaching out! I can understand that sizing can be confusing, especially in hats! For baby, toddler, and kid sizes we have the average head size for each of the age groups and that is what we base our sizing off of!
All the best,
Gianna
I bought Lovebird to make this hat. When I got the yarn, it included a pattern for the Helix scarf, which looks beautiful. Could I use this single yarn to make the Helix Tube scarf, or would it be easier to convert this pattern to a tube scarf — just continue knitting without the decrease for the top of the hat?
Hi Gina,
Thanks for reaching out! You could certainly use Lovebird for the Helix Tube Scarf, you can use it as a single color and follow the same pattern without including the color changes and it should work fine!
All the best,
Gianna
so I knit hat till it measured 6.5 than i knit 4 rows for kid size before I start dec
Hi Rene,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes that is correct, you will work the body for 6½ inches and then begin the decrease rows!
All the best,
Gianna
I am making the Inside Out hat in the Lovebird. I ordered 6 different colors for various nieces and daughter-in-laws. I love all the colors. I am finishing up the first hat in Adult Small and I ran out of yarn. I took the almost finished hat off and it fits my head so it’s not too big. How can I remedy this or do I have to take it all out and make a smaller size?
Hi Sue,
Thanks for reaching out! For the Baby, Toddler and Kid sizes we used only 1 skein but for the Adult Small, Medium and Large sizes we used 2 skeins (you can see under the MATERIAL section of the pattern!) Going down a size from the Adult Small (Kid Size is the next size down) would be too small for an adults head. The best way to remedy this is to get another skein to finish off the hat since you will need 2 skeins for any of the adult sizes!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!
Gianna
Almost all these colors are out of stock. Will they be available for Christmas ?
Hi Jill,
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, I do not have a current estimate of when the out of stock colors will be back. You can add your email in under the color you want on the Lovebird product page and we will email you as soon as it is back in stock!
All the best,
Gianna
I’m making this hat for two people: One’s head circumference is 22 inches, the other’s is 23 inches. Which size should I choose? I’m thinking adult medium, but would like your input.
Hi Sue,
Thanks for reaching out! I agree, I think the adult medium size should work for both people since the hat will stretch a bit and you want a snug fit!
Happy knitting!
Gianna
Hi – I have three hats I want to make with this yarn. Their head circumferences are 21 5/8, 21 1/8, and 19 3/8. My question is, taking into consideration any brim stretchiness, what size hats would you recommend making for these three? Thank you!
Hi Gretchen,
Thanks for reaching out! I would recommend working the adult small or adult medium size depending on the fit you are looking for! The model is wearing both the adult small (pinkish colorway with pom pom) and adult medium (grey/white colorway) so you can see how they fit, the adult small will be a bit more fitted and the adult medium a bit more slouchy!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!
Gianna
I am making hats for 2 young (1 and 2-1/2 years) girls, one with a head circumference of 18.5 inches, the other, 19.5 inches. Do you have a size recommendation? Also, does the number of stitches cast on matter? Perhaps between 45-50 would work for both?
Hi Deb,
Thanks for reaching out! I would recommend the kid size for both since there will be a bit of stretch to the hat! The cast on is multiples of 5 so either 40, 45, or 50!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!
Gianna
Can I use Lovebird for the pom pom? I have extra wool.
Thank you,
Lori
Hi Lori,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes, you can certainly use Lovebird for the pom pom!
All the best,
Gianna
I am a knitter who has successfully advanced from making scarves to making hats, due to this wonderful pattern. I have been using Lovebird and like it very much, but I would like to try other yarns using this pattern. What do you suggest?
Maggie
Hi Maggie,
Thanks for reaching out! Lovebird if a bulk weight yarn so any other bulky weight yarn would work, I would recommend our yarn Super Soft Merino for this hat!
All the best,
Gianna
i’m interested in making the hat toddler size and am unclear when i start using double pointed needles. Would it be after i knit to the 6 inches from cast-on edge? Nowhere in instructions does it say..
and do you have a video to explain how to do the stitch transfer?
Thank you
Hi Judy,
Thanks for reaching out! There isn’t an exact spot where it is necessary to start using the DPNs. It is more when you feel it is the right time, typically after a few rows of decreases when the stitches begin to be tight on the circular needles! We don’t have a video explaining how to transfer needles, but it is very easy! When you are ready to start using your DPNs you simply start the row knitting with one of your needles and divide the stitches evenly over 3 or 4 of the DPNs! Our Double Pointed Needles tutorial is great to check out if you are new to using DPNs!
I hope this clarifies things, happy knitting!
Gianna
I LOVE THIS YARN!! It’s just plain FUN! Will you be restocking it sometime soon?
Hi Jamdogg,
Thanks for reaching out! I am so glad to hear that you love this yarn and think it is so fun! While I don’t know exactly when the yarn will be back in stock (hopefully in January/February!) the best way to be notified is to add your email in on the Lovebird product page under the colors you are interested in and we will send you an email as soon as it is available again!
Warmly,
Gianna
Hello! I love these hats! Are there any yarns that you could substitute that are similar as far as having all of the different colors? I want to make this hat for my niece, whose birthday is coming up next month, so I’m in a bit of a time crunch! Thank you for your help!
Hi Emily,
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, we don’t have a yarn that has the exact same color effect as Lovebird but we do have a few options that are a similar weight and have some fun colors! MANOS DEL URUGUAY Franca is the most similar and has some very fun color options! You could also use our Super Soft Merino!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!
Gianna
I have knitted up three of these beautiful hats in different colors. Now officially over my fear of DPN’s! What would you recommend for a pompom to go with Pen & Ink? I would prefer a pompom that picks up the purple-blue color.
Thanks!!
Hi Linda,
Thanks for reaching out! That is awesome, I am so glad to hear that you have enjoyed the yarn and pattern and are getting comfortable with DPNs! I would recommend Super Soft Merino in Mountain Blue or even Crocus Bud!
Please let us know how this turns out!
Warmly,
Gianna
Hi Gianna, I do not normally check gauge which is one of my problems in knitting hats that are too big. So I just measured and in making the adult medium I have 12-13 stitches per 4 inches. Do I need to go down a needle size? I am using Lovebird in Candyshop . Love the yarn the colors are so pretty!
Hi Laura,
Thanks for reaching out! The gauge of the hat should be 10½ stitches = 4 inches, so if you have 12-13 stitches for 4 inches then you would actually want to go up in needle size! I would recommend trying the hat out on a US 10 3/4 or US 11 needles instead!
I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions!
Warmly,
Gianna
If I don’t want a slouchy hat how many inches do I knit to make it fit snug rather than slouchy? This would be for a medium adult.
Also if adult is 21 inches should I knit small adult for give, or stick to medium size?
Hi Caroline,
Thanks for reaching out! To make this hat less slouchy I would recommend knitting the body to either 6½ or 7 inches instead of 7½ for the Adult Medium! Is the head circumference 21″? If thats the case I would actually suggest knitting the adult small so insure that the hat has a nice fit and is not too big!
I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions!
Warmly,
Gianna
Hello
Will you have Lovebird available again soon? I didnt realize I’d need two skeins for each hat. Yikes! I have 2 hats to finish. I sent my e-mail for notification. Just wondering how long the wait might be. Thank you.
Laurie
Hi Laurie,
Thanks for reaching out! Luckily Lovebird should be back in stock in the next week or two! If you have signed up for the notifications then we will let you know as soon as it is available on site!
Warmly,
Gianna
Thank you for your reply Gianna. now I have another question. Or dilemma. I am coming to the finish of my hat but I notice the rolled brim curls toward the knit side. How do I get it to curl towards the purl side? Looking at the directions Im sure I followed exactly. Have I missed something? Thank you again.
Laurie
Hi Laurie,
Thanks for reaching out again! Did you purl the first few rows for the brim before knitting every round for the body? (keep in mind that you knit the hat with the inside out and then will turn it when finished!) I think you can possibly fix this with blocking by rolling the brim in the right direction!
Please let me know if you have any more questions!
Warmly,
Gianna
I want to make these hats but have never knit in the round. Do you have a good tutorial?
Thank you!
Hi Michele,
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, we don’t have a tutorial to get started working in the round but thank you for expressing your interest, I will be sure to pass this along to the rest of the team! In the meantime you can find our full list of tutorials here: Knitting Tutorials!
Warmly,
Gianna
My initial plan was to make 2 of these hats for my young grandchildren but they were so much fun I ended up making 8 for other family members. The yarn is so easy to work with and the colors are fun!
Very basic ? When it says “ unrolled”. Does that mean you open roll to first row worked and measure from that first row or does it even matter?
Hi Ann,
Thanks for writing in. Yes, by “unrolled,” we’re indicating to measure from the very first row that you knit! Hope this clarifies things.
All the best,
Lili
Yarn twisting up on itself! Do you have any suggestions for me with how to cope with this? I rolled my first skein into a ball before using and there were sections where the skein yarn twisted backon itself that I gently tried to open up as I rolled. Now that I am purling and knitting (continental) with it, I am getting completely frustrated by this twisting, stopping several times in a 16 inch round to untwist the upcoming yarn. I do respect the nature of how this is created, but I need some coaching how to cope.
thanks!
Hi Cynthia,
Thanks for reaching out! Please send the information above along with a clear photo of your yarn and how it is twisting to our customer service team at [email protected] and they can assist further from there!
Warmly,
Gianna
I would like to make this hat in purple and am thinking about using two purple shades of the soft merino wool knitted together. Would that work or would it be too bulky? Would I need to adjust the pattern?
Hi Linda,
Thanks for writing in. You can absolutely use two strands of Super Soft Merino for this pattern, but you would need to adjust the cast-on number, since the yarn would be bulkier than Lovebird.
To figure out your cast-on number, you will want to first knit a gauge swatch in pattern. Once you know how many stitches you are getting per inch, you can multiply that number by the width that you would like and cast on the nearest multiple of 5. I hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
Hello, I’m a little confused, I cast on 45 stitches on a #10, 16 ” circular needles, but that seems very small circumference. in fact the number stitches doesn’t even reach the other end of the circular needles. I’m new to knitting and wonder if I’ve missed something.
it seems like you are starting at the brim of the hat based on the instructions. can you please help me out?
Thank you,
Alison
Hi Alison,
Thanks for reaching out! Are you using a chunky/super bulky yarn for your project? You’ll need to use a heavy yarn like this in order to make sure the stitches are large enough to achieve the correct gauge, and therefore for the circumference of the hat to be wide enough.
However, it also sounds like you’re making the Kid size, which has a finished circumference of 17.25 inches. This makes it a tight fit around the 16-inch circular needles, even at the correct gauge! You may want to consider just using double pointed needles for the entire hat, so that the stitches can sit comfortably around them.
I hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
I am making the toddler size and am running out of yarn. Have only done 3 rows of decreases. I have reread instructions and comments and have followed the pattern. Gauge is right. Is it common to run short on this size and need a 2nd skein? Frustrating as it is adorable and would have loved to have finished this gift.
Hi Patricia,
Thanks for reaching out, although we’re sorry to hear that you’ve run out of yarn. We haven’t heard of anyone running out of yarn for this project, but we can absolutely look into this issue further! Would you be able to send an email to [email protected] with the color and dye lot of Lovebird you’re using? We’ll be able to help out more from there!
All the best
Lili
I enjoyed knitting this hat for my daughter using Point Break; thank you for this pattern. The last thing I need to do is make the Pom Pom but I am stuck trying to decide on what color to use. Could you recommend a few colors within the Super Soft Merino line that would work with Point Break?
Hi Jenny,
Thank you for writing in! We are so happy you enjoyed the pattern! I think Super Soft Merino in the color Bougainvillea Pink would look wonderful as a pom pom for this hat. I hope this helps but let me know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Help! I’m knitting the kid size, and just realized I forgot to knit a full round between the decrease rounds. Just finished decrease round 7. Is this an undo everything situation? Or can I knit 4 full rounds and catch up?
Hi Laura,
Thank you for your question! We would suggest ripping back to the point right before you began the decrease rounds just to ensure your hat is the correct shape. I hope this helps but please let us know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Hi, thank you for this pattern!
I need some guidance to adjust the crown decrease. I’ve knitted with an Aran weight yarn and adjusted my number of CO stitches to 80. I want to use the same decrease method, because it will guarantee that when I turn this inside out it will look the same as yours, meaning: it will not have a noticeable decrease pattern forming in the crown, like spirals or tuck/dart lines. Because I’m a new knitter, I don’t even know what to type into a search engine to figure this out! Can you please help me, either by providing a decreasing pattern for my 80 stitches, or by guiding me in what your method of crown decrease is called? Thank you!
Hi Bee,
If you’re adjusting the hat by adding stitches, just make sure each additional decrease round has 5 evenly spaced out k2togs that don’t align with each other vertically. Then you can follow the pattern instructions once you have decreased down to 60 stitches!
All the best,
Gavriella
Thanks for your help, Gavriella, but I’m still stuck… do I just randomly put together combinations of *knits + K2tog* for my first 4 decrease rounds that will get me form my 80 stitches to the 60 stitches where this pattern starts the decreases? I’ve tried to decipher if there’s a pattern in your decrease combinations but can’t find one; so, I’m not sure if it’s just a random combination you’ve put together in each decrease row, or if there’s a logic I should also apply? I hope you understand my confusion!
Hi Bee,
Yes, these decreases should be randomly placed! Just make sure to space them apart from each other roughly the same distance. The randomness is the key to the crown of this hat!
All the best,
Lili
Thanks, Lili, it was a tough one but I winged it and it turned out well 🙂
