City Gym Shorts for All Ages
I have enough expired memberships under my belt to finally admit that I am not a gym person. Although you may not find me sweating on an elliptical, I haven’t completely abandoned the idea of a workout regimen. I’ve just redefined the whole concept!
My StairMaster is countless flights of stairs scattered throughout my daily subway commute; my weights come in the form of two wriggling girls (often carried up the aforementioned stairs); and my hot yoga is just about anything I do in New York’s sweltering summer heat. My gym is the city itself, and my gym clothes are these City Gym Shorts!
Designed with a classic tulip hem and an easy elastic waist, these shorts have all the comfort and ease of traditional exercise gear but with way more style! I used Robert Kaufman’s Chambray Union in Slub Indigo for the back, a fabric that is soft, comfortable and so versatile it was easy to match it with a range of prints in Liberty of London’s exquisite Tana Lawn.
With so many beautiful Liberty prints to choose from and with sizes for kids and women, it looks like my sewing machine may be getting a workout too! -Corinne

Notes
Pre-wash all fabrics before starting.
To print the PDF template, be sure to first download the pattern and then print it. This means rather than simply clicking the link and opening the PDF in a browser window, you should click on the pattern link using the “right click” or “control click” option on your mouse or keyboard. This will give you the option to “Download the linked file.” Once the file is downloaded, it should print like a charm!
For the sake of clarity our instructional photos use Robert Kaufman’s Botanics + Architextures in Tangerine Hatches, a fabric with a clear right and wrong side, for the front panels (instead of the Tana Lawn). When you are working with a fabric without a clear right or wrong side, choose either side as the right side for the first seam and follow this precedent for all subsequent steps.
Pattern
Cut
Front Pieces
Use the prepared Template to cut two Front pieces from the Liberty. Cut one Front with the right side of the fabric facing up and one with the wrong side facing up. The two Front pieces should be mirror images of each other.
Back Pieces
Use the prepared Template to cut two Back pieces from the Chambray Union. (If you are using a fabric that has a right and wrong side, be sure to cut the pieces as described above so that the two Back pieces are mirror images of each other.)
Waistband
Cut one 4 ¾-inch wide piece for the Waistband from the Chambray Union. For Kids it should measure 23 (24 ¼, 26 ¾, 28 ¾, 30 ¾, 32 ½, 33 ½) inches long; or for Women, 36 ¼ (38 ½, 41 ¾, 45 ½, 48) inches long.
Bias Strips
Cut two 1 5/8-inch strips on the bias from the Chambray Union. For Kids each strip should measure at least 30 (33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48) inches long; or for Women, at least 48 (50, 53, 56, 60) inches long.
You may need to piece the strips to get the appropriate length. For detailed instructions on how to piece binding strips, please visit our Making Bias Tape Binding Tutorial.
Elastic
Cut the Elastic. For Kids it should measure 19 ½ (20 ½, 21 ½, 22 ½, 23 ½, 24 ½, 25 ½) inches; or for Women, 30 (32, 35, 39, 43) inches.
Piece the Front and Back Pieces
With right sides facing, stack the two Front pieces on top of each other. Pin along the concave edge of the inseam.
Sew along the pinned edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Sew along the seam allowance with a zigzag stitch.
Press the seam to one side.
Repeat with the two Back pieces.
With right sides facing, match up the short crotch ends of the Front and Back along the raw edge, making sure that the center seams line up, and pin in place. Sew along the pinned edge with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Sew along the seam allowance with a zigzag stitch.
Press the seam to one side.
Attach the Binding
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, use the 18mm Bias Tape Maker to press the bias strips into single fold bias tape.
Fold in half lengthwise, aligning the folded edges and encasing the raw edges. Press.
Pin the bias tape around the outside edge of the shorts, following the raw edge all the way from the top corner of the Front side, around the bottom hemline, and up the Back side, or vice versa. Use one strip for each side. With the right side facing up, sew the tape to the shorts with an edgestitch, making sure to catch both sides as you stitch.
Sew the Side Edges
With the right sides of the Front and Back both facing up, bring one Front side edge over one Back side edge so that the two bound edges are stacked on top of each other. Push the outer edge of the front about 1/8 inch towards the Back so that the sewn line of the Front bias tape runs roughly through the center of the bias tape on the back.
Working from the waistline down and using the line of stitching on the Front bias tape as a guide, sew the Front to the Back along this side edge. stop sewing when you reach the top of the curve of the bottom hem. Backstitch at the end of the seam.
Repeat with the other side.
These are now the Shorts.
Sew the Waistband
Fold the Waistband piece in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press to create a crease. Open up the fold. Now, fold the two long raw edges in towards the wrong side to meet at the center crease. Press the folds. Refold in half lengthwise, aligning the folded edges and encasing the raw edges. Press again.
Open up the folds at the two short ends. With right sides together, stack the ends together, matching up their raw edges. Pin in place. Sew along the short edge with a 5/8-inch seam allowance.
Press the seam to one side and sew it down with an edgestitch.
Turn the Shorts inside out.
Open one side of the waistband. With the right side of the Waistband facing the wrong side of the Shorts and matching up the seam of the Waistband with the center seam of the Shorts Back, pin the open raw edge of the Waistband to the raw waist edge of the shorts.
Sew the Waistband to the Shorts with a roughly 1 1/8-inch seam allowance, using the crease as a guide.
Now, turn the Shorts so that the right side is facing out. Fold the Waistband over the Shorts’ raw waist edge and pin in place.
Edgestitch along the bottom of the fold of the Waistband, leaving a 1 1/2-inch gap.
Attach a safety pin to one end of the Elastic. Insert this end into the gap. Pull the pin through the Waistband, exiting out the other side. Make sure not to pull the Elastic’s other end into the channel.
Checking that the Elastic isn’t twisted, overlap the two ends by 1/2 inch. Sew the ends together widthwise with a zigzag stitch.
Tuck the Elastic into the Waistband and close the gap with an edgestitch.
Your shorts are ready to wear!

These are fantastic! I have been looking for something like this to use my herring bone chambray and pajama shorts too ! Thank you!
Oh these are lovely. I love the tulip hem, I have been looking for that type of gym short but have not found something cute. Now I might just have to make them myself.
Love these shorts!! This may be a silly question, but do you need more fabric for the front because you waste some in making them a mirror image? Just wanted to make sure the measurements were correct because it seemed counterintuitive to me. Thanks!!
so sad, yet another pattern not big enough for this fat girl 🙁
to increase the size of the pattern all you need to do is cut the pattern pieces up the middle and add a couple inches of fabric to each one. (or a few inches depending on size) where the pattern is most straight, I chose right after the tulip edges. I only needed a couple extra inches of wiggle room, but the pattern still looks great and I love them.
YES I am done with the gym!!! This year I've finally embraced it and my OB says it's called "integrated exercise!" YES IT IS. I am definitely going to make these shorts. Yours are so fetching.
Hi Jessica-
We're so sorry you don't see your size here. We really strive to include people of every size in our patterns but unfortunately for free patterns like this one it's not always possible to go as small or as large as we'd like. If you wouldn't mind perhaps you can email me your size and what kind of patterns you like to sew? My direct email is molly AT purlsoho DOT com. It's great for us know know what sizes our readers are looking for for future designs.
Again, we really apologize if you felt left out by this pattern and we will certainly keep your comments in mind as we move forward.
Thank you-
Molly
ps- Another commenter recommended The Prefontaine shorts pattern by Moxie, which comes in larger sizes. I accidentally deleted the her comment but here is the link (and thanks to whoever left the comment!): https://www.etsy.com/shop/thatmoxiegirl
Thanks for the pattern, I can't wait to make these!
However, it would be really useful if you could put a 1"x1" square somewhere in the pattern schematic just to make sure the printout is the correct size. Printers have a habit of re-sizing things!
This are so fantastic! I want to make ten pairs like these. Right now, I'm sitting in my sewing room working on pair #1, a pair done in blue gingham and a solid blue back. I'm imagining all kinds of possible fabric/trim combinations…
This is exactly the shorts pattern I have been looking for! I am a bit larger than the largest size but I think I can adjust it to fit. Perfect for "integrated exercise" this summer…
That is so nice of you to Molly to reply to Jessica. Very sweet.
These shorts are fabulous. I would love to make them in the Robert Kaufmans Chambray Union, Slub Indigo that you show above but I am not seeing that exact fabric on your site through the link. Is it under a different name? Thanks.
Ooo, another pattern added to my to-do list 🙂 Will be making these for the kiddos and myself. Thanks!
Question! I have some pre-made bias tape I'd like to use. How would that affect the yardage needed for the back/waistband fabric on the women's version?
Hi StaceyZ-
We have sold out of that fabric but we have more on order. If you'd like you can email customerservice AT purlsoho DOT com and they will email you when it comes back in stock.
Thanks so much for getting in touch!
Molly
Hi Katie-
I still think you should get the full 3/4 yards of the back and waistband fabric to be safe since the waistband take up such a large portion of the fabric and I'd hate for you to run out.
Thanks so much for your question!
Molly
These are fabulous. Great styling and great use of Liberty. So often patterns are shapeless and look homemade. These are a home run and very fashion-forward.
Thanks so much for sharing this! Totally making! ^_^
HI Katie-
I'm not sure if I fully understand your question but the amounts listed in the materials section are correct. A half yard of the Liberty of London for the front section of the shorts is enough!
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Molly
Hi Tina-
Thank you so much for this great suggestion! We will be adding a 1-inch square for scale in future patterns.
We would like you to send you something as a thank you! Would you mind emailing me directly (Molly AT purlsoho DOT com) so we can arrange that?
Thanks again!
Molly
i’m not sure if anyone else had this problem but when i print out the pattern pieces, the straight dotted lines do not print. the curved part of the dotted lines print and the rest prints as well. i’ve tried printing on two different computers and two different printers with the same exact problem. i’m not sure why this would happen. 🙁
Yes! I have the same problem, plus they do not print out at the right size. It’s always smaller even though everything else I print out is normal.
Hi Brandy –
I am sorry the pattern template is giving you trouble. I have printed it out on a couple of different printers here without any trouble, but it sounds like you are not alone in this problem!
I am sending you a modified version of the pattern now with thicker lines. Hopefully this will help!
Thanks!
Corinne
Would you be willing to email me the pattern, also, please? I am having the same trouble printing where the dotted lines don’t print. Thanks!
Jan G
Hi Jan-
We will email that to you shortly.
Thanks for getting in touch!
Best-
Molly
Hi Jan –
In the end, what we found was that in order to resolve the printing issue the secret is to download the pattern first and then print (rather than opening the PDF in a browser window, which is what happens with a simple click on the link). When you click on the pattern link use the “right click” or “control click” option on your mouse or keyboard and this should give you the option to “Download the linked file”. Once the file is downloaded, it should print like a charm!
I hope this helps.
-Corinne
Yes, mine is doing the same thing. I have tried to fix it but i can’t get any straight lines to print. How might I go about requesting the modified format with thicker lines (and did that one print for you?)
Hi Erin –
I am sorry the template is giving you problems as well! I am happy to send you the modified version of the pattern, though one of the previous commenters did still have problems printing it. I suggest trying to print using a different printer as well if it continues to give you trouble.
Thank you! I will email you the modified version shortly!
-Corinne
I love these! how about a male boxer short pattern/tutorial. i would love to make my husband a bunch of boxers from your beautiful and soft fabrics.
These are the cutest shorts I’ve ever seen. Where do you find your fabrics?
Hi Sawyer –
I am so glad you like the project!
All of the fabrics that we used are listed in the Materials section at the top of the pattern. They are all available for sale at the Purl Soho shop.
Thanks!
-Corinne
Oh, thanks for pointing them out. FABulous!
Love the pattern easy to make.
Thank you so much for this pattern. I’ve just made some for me and I’m about to make some for my daughter now. 🙂
Thank you so greatly for this pattern and for making it free!! Wow!! As a pattern designer myself, I know firsthand how much work and organization this kind of thing takes! Amazing work, beautiful pattern directions and pdf! I cannot wait to get started on shorts for myself and my sons! Thank you so sincerely!
Joy
i love this pattern and made some velveteen shorts for myself with no problem. the pattern for the kids waist band and bias tape includes 6 different measurements, but there are 7 sizes. i’m not sure if i’m just missing something or if the tutorial is missing numbers. help!
Hi ohjennymae –
Thank you for writing in! Yes, the measurements for the Waistband and bias strips for the size 11 years in the Kids pattern were missing from the tutorial. Good Spotting! The numbers have now been added.
The Waistband should be cut to 33 1/2 inches and the bias strips should each be at least 48 inches long.
Please let us know if you have any other questions while you work!
-Corinne
Obrigada por postar esse modelo tão versatil e bonito, muito legal, adorei esse City Gym Shorts.
I love this pattern! Cannot wait to make them. I am washing fabric as I type!! Thank you so much for sharing. My 13 yr old is so excited!
Hi! I am so glad I finally found this pattern for my girl. Will make these as soon as I get the fabric. Thanks so much!
Nat (from Argentina)
I am wondering if in your new website format you still have the link to change the tutorial into a printable format. This is more of a general question about your but i am trying to print the gym short instructions.
Hi Thea-
Unfortunately the new format does not have that option. We are working on it but in the meantime we recommend that you copy and paste the pattern into a word or text doc and print, or save as a PDF, from there. Sorry this isn’t ideal.
Thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Wondering how I find the pattern to download? I would really like to make them but just unsure how to find the pattern?
Many thanks
Catherine
Hi Catherine-
The instructions for this pattern are not available to download however the template for it is. You can find the templates linked in the “Materials” section of the pattern. If you’d like to save the entire pattern as a PDF we recommend that you copy and paste the pattern into a Word or Text doc and save from there. We know this isn’t ideal and are working to convert many of our patterns into printer friendly PDFs but in the meantime this is the best solution.
Thanks so much for getting in touch!
Molly
Hi,
I also had the problem where the pattern wasn’t printing properly and being impatient I didn’t want to wait to make these! I realised that on the print screen (where ALL the lines are still visible) that the scale was correct so I simply used a ruler to measure and draw in the straight lines that were missing on to the printed out pattern pieces!
It sounds a little funny but it works! haha
Thanks for the awesome pattern!
Rachael
Thanks for the free pattern! I just bought a sewing machine and found your pattern. First try and it works! So happy with it! I made it with leftover batik cotton.
Hi, Thank you so much for the pattern.
I had the same problems with the printing, tried 3 times with no succes getting all the marks ,at the end what did work was to save the pattern on the computer and then print…like a charm :).
Thank you again,
Regards,
camelia
Hi,
I tried to leave yesterday a message but it did not work. I had also problems with printing but after saving the file first on my computer and from there printing the problem was solved,
maybe this can help other people that experience the same problem.
Has anyone tried adding pockets to the side seams? I’ve made some shorts and love them but need to carry keys etc when I walk the dogs or walk to the gym so would love to add some pockets. Maybe I’ll just give it a go and see what happens. 🙂
This is awesome! I would feel so accomplished if I made shorts for myself with my own two hands. Thank you for the tutorial!
zauberbear.blogspot.com
I just made these shorts, so quick and easy – thank you for the great instructions. My bias strip stitching needs a little practice to get as tidy as yours but overall am very happy with my version .
Hi,
I like this short very much! How can I get a free pattern?
Hi Christy-
The free pattern is avialable here within the blog post. The template is linked in the materials section. We are working on making our site more printer friendly but in the meantime, if you’d like to print the pattern, we recommend that you use a site like printfriendly.com.
Thank you!
Molly
I love these and so do my girls. We are deep in the middle of winter, but I logging back on to get more sizes so I can sew up a whole bunch for next summer for my growing girls and nieces and friends. Thanks for such a great, easy to follow beautiful tutorial!
Thank you so much for the pattern! So cute. I at first made the 38-41 hip as my hip is 38″, but they were so huge on me, so I dropped to the next smaller size. That fits great, except for two alterations I would like to make. I need to add a little height to the rise in the rear, and shorten the rise in the front. They threaten to show my knickers when I bend over, and sag at the front belly. It would be great if the front waistband dipped a little. The leg length is perfect however.
How can I make this alteration without screwing up the pattern? Thanks so much!
Hi Shea –
Thanks for writing in! I’d be happy to help you get just the right fit for the shorts!
It sounds like you just need to do a small bit of adjusting to the pattern along the waistline. You can trim into / add onto the pattern just as you described, trimming it down a bit in the Front, and adding a bit of height in the Back. When you are making these adjustments, just be sure to keep the following things in mind . . .
– The waistline curves should be gradual. You don’t want the shorts coming to a “V” in the front, or a sharp point up in the back. To do this, just be sure that the curves flatten out before hitting the center seam lines.
– The outside edges of the Front and Back pieces should line up, so even though you are adding height to the Back and taking away in the Front, the waistline should even out at the outside edges.
– You may need to do some adjusting to the length of the Waistband to accommodate the curves. To make sure that it fits properly, I suggest cutting the Waistband piece a bit longer than recommended and pinning it onto the shorts before you sew the two short ends together.
I hope this all helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions as you are making these adjustments!
Happy Sewing!
-Corinne
I love the shorts and am in the process of making my first pair. Do you have any tips for neatly attaching the bias tape to the curve (tulip part) of the shorts? I’m having difficulty getting a neat edge with no warping/puckering, even with lots of pinning and stitching slowly.
Thank you!
Hi Tiffany –
Sewing on bias tape, particularly around curved edges, can definitely be challenging!
When I am having a hard time getting a neat edge, I will sometimes sew the tape down on both the right and wrong sides, as a way of securing it before I have to do the detail work of a neat edge stitch. Here’s how you would use this technique on the shorts . . .
Open up the fold on one side of the bias tape. With the wrong side of the shorts facing up, pin the open edge of the bias tape to the outside edge of the shorts, matching up the raw edge of the shorts with the raw edge of the bias tape.
Sew the along the pinned edges with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Now, flip the shorts so that the right side is facing up. Fold the bias tape over the raw edge, making sure that the folded edge of the tape covers the stitches from the previous seam. Pin in place. Sew the bias tape down with an edge stitch.
(Molly used this technique on her Inside Out Bags. You can find her photographs of the process toward the end of the post.)
I hope this helps you get a neat (and pucker-free) edge!
-Corinne
Hi, just wondering whether there is meant to be a straight grain marking on the pattern?
Hi Natasha –
This is a great question! There is not a straight grain mark on the pattern. The grain of the fabric should run along the straight, outside edges of the Front and Back pieces of the Shorts and along the short edge of the Waistband piece.
I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions as you a putting these together.
-Corinne
Just wanted you to know I saw this pattern (and the store) in a news article on my local (Nashville, TN) CBS station. Cute shorts! I’m going to branch out from my knitting and needlework to give clothes a try.
I finally got around to making these. They came out great! I can’t wait to make a few extra pairs!
Am I missing something??? I clicked on the pattern and it is only for children. The sizing information includes women’s hip measurements but the pattern is waist sizing as well (although for ages 2 to 11)
Jenny
Hi Jennifer –
There are two pattern pdfs: One for kids and one for women. The link to the Women’s pattern is the last item listed in the material list under the title “Women”.
I hope this helps!
-Corinne
Where do I find the pattern?
Thank You!
Hi Nora –
There are two pattern pdfs: One for kids and one for women. The links to the patterns are the last items listed in the material lists under the “Kids” and “Women” titles.

Thank you so much for this pattern and tutorial. I can sew but not very good at garmet sewing. This tutorial was perfect. The added comments were a big help also. I just finished shorts (flanel) for my 14 yr old and I think they are amazing. Who knew I could make something so awesome. Thanks again!!
A couple of days ago I sat down at a sewing machine for the first time in about 8 years and I chose this pattern to get me going. Really nice instructions here and the size fit me perfectly. Can’t wait to wear these at the beach. Thank you!
I adore these shorts and have just made a pair in just a few hours. My little girl is twirling around in them now and telling me what other fabric she would like them in.
Thank you for a brilliant pattern and tutorial 😀
I was thinking the other day how I would love to make a pair of easy shorts to kick around in and the next day I stumbled upon this pattern. I made a pair and love them…..and you have sizes for everyone. Quick, easy, and an affordable gift for kids as well as adults that you can customize for any personality. thank you.
Hi,
Is seam allowance included in the pattern? I can’t find it anywhere, nor drawn or written 🙁
Thanks!
Marine
Hi Marine –
Thanks for writing in. This is a great question! All seam allowances are included on the pattern pieces and are specified within the written pattern.
Please let me know if you have any other questions as you work on this project!
-Corinne
hi there, these are lovely!
i may be being a bit silly here but where is the actual pattern as it says to follow the templates but i cannot find them any where?
Hi Tasha –

Fabulous and quick pattern. Thanks a lot. I’m sewing up a few this week to wear as great summer jammies!
I’ve made three of them this week. So comfy and great for the “non-city” gym 😉 Pics and article here: https://titesmains.wordpress.com/2015/04/25/les-shorts-tres-appropries-pour-la-gym-patron-gratuit-de-pearlbee/
This is a GREAT tutorial! I love the look of the waistband. Thank you for taking the time to share this.
Each time I try to print this pattern, I don’t get all the lines. I have tried color, B+W, everything! Any ideas?
Hi Dawn –

It did work…I’m so happy…now let’s start sewing…
I love this! Just whipped up a pair in the 35-37″ size and they fit like a dream in the waist but are much too tight (like seam-splitting tight) in the rear.
I want to make another pair, but am uncertain about alterations. Should I go up a size but use the elastic length for the 35-37″? Or is there a better way to alter the pattern?
Hi Bridget –
I’m sorry you have found the shorts are too tight! I think your suggestion of going up a size, but keeping the shorter elastic length could work very well.
If you have found that you like the fit in the front, but not the back, you could also try going up a size in the back only. However, this adjustment would require some alterations in the Shorts length and Waistband as well.
I hope this helps!
-Corinne
I have tried downloading the pattern and I still cannot get the lines to print. Not sure what else to do. Really want to make these shorts for my two youngest girls. The middle parts of the lines print on some of the pages, but none of the lines print on page 1 and page 4.
Hi Tonya –
I’m sorry the pattern still isn’t printing properly for you. I’m not sure what could be the problem.
I will email you directly with the PDF and see if that helps!
-Corinne
Are there five layers of fabric in the waistband? Or am I reading the tutorial wrong? If it is actually five layers thick, does it get bulky with all that and elastic, too?
Hi Bonnie –
Thanks for writing in!
You are reading the instructions correctly, there are 5 layers of fabric in the waistband. I haven’t found that it feels bulky, and actually like the structure that the extra layers provide. However, if you are using a thick fabric for your shorts and are concerned about this extra bulk, you could use a lighter weight fabric on the waistband and should have no problems!
I hope this helps!
-Corinne
Hi!
I´m about to sew up the shorts for my little one and me. Two questions aforehand:
1. if I measure 37″ hips should I make the one from 35-37″ or rather the one from 38-40″? Is it more tight fitting or looser? I don´t like it too tight but they shouldn´t fall off either 😉
2. would it be possible to make them out of knit? If so, would you recommend to downsize? Or change anything else?
Thanks so much in advance.
Cheers,
Sarah
Hi Sarah –
Thanks for writing in. These are great questions!
1. The shorts are designed to have about 2-3 inches of ease, so they are not especially loose. Choosing which size to make will depend on your preferred fit. If you do size up, you can alway adjust the length of elastic as needed to make sure that the shorts fall where you’d like on the waist.
2. I do not have much experience working with knits, so unfortunately I can’t answer on this subject with much authority. However, if I were to try these with a knit I think I would follow the pattern as written. Because the shorts are designed to have a closer fit, I would not downsize unless you wanted to make them quite fitted.
I hope this helps!
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
-Corinne
Thanks for your reply! It does help 🙂
Love these!! I just made some shorts with a fold-over top since I can’t find any comfy maternity shorts. I will have to try that with these!
What a wonderful pattern, thanks for sharing. I made some city gym shorts last night as pajama shorts and they are great. I forsee making many more of these…
Hi, I’m trying to print a 3 year old size and it doesn’t fit together at all. There’s a large gap between pieces 1 and 3 and 4 and 5. What can I do to get it to line up? I had no trouble with the adult pattern.
Jordan
Hi Jordan –
I’m sorry you’re having trouble with the City Gym Shorts pattern template! It sounds like the issue might one of two things.
1. The template for the City Gym Shorts in Kids’ sizes is divided into 3 pieces (rather than 4, like the adult pattern). When you are piecing the Front together, it can be helpful to first tape piece 2 to piece 3, and then tape these pieces together to piece 1. When you are piecing the Back, first tape piece 5 with piece 6, and then tape these together with piece 4.
2. It could be a problem with the length of pieces 2 and 6.
I know that some of our readers have had issues with some of the lines of the template not printing, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you had this issue as well. Please check on your pieces to make sure that all of the cutting lines are there. In particular, there should be a straight line on piece 2 that runs directly above the text “attach to piece 1”. Piece 2 should attach to Piece 1 along this line. Similarly, there should be a line on piece 6 that runs directly above the text “attach to piece 4”, and the two pieces should attach along this line.
If this seems to be the issue, we have found that the secret is to first download the pattern and then print it. Rather than simply clicking the link and opening the PDF in a browser window, you should click on the pattern link using the “right click” or “control click” option on your mouse or keyboard. This will give you the option to “Download the linked file.” Once the file is downloaded, it should print like a charm!
I hope this helps!

Brilliant pattern! Thank you so much. I can’t wait to make another pair.
I have a 12mm and 25 mm bias tape maker. Would these work just as well as the 18mm listed above?
Hi Shellee –
This is a great question. The best way to know is to give it a try and find out!
I recommend using a scrap fabric to make a small length of bias tape in both sizes. Try wrapping these around a curved hem (like the side edges of the shorts) and see what you think. I bet the 25 mm bias tape will work great!
I hope this helps!
-Corinne
Hey,
Thanks for the lovely pattern! If I were to add an inch or two vertically to the shorts would I need to make any other changes, other than more fabric? I generally favor slightly longer shorts than most stores sell, and this would be a perfect alternative!
Thanks again,
Natalie
Hi Natalie-
Adjusting the length of the shorts should be an easy fix. Be sure to add the same amount of length to the inseam of both the Front and Back pattern pieces (rather than to the body of the shorts), and blend the cutting line through the added length. This may require redrawing the tulip curve on the side edge of the pattern pieces, depending on the size you’re working with. You will also need to adjust the length of the bias tape strips.
I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions as you work on this project.
-Corinne
I adore these shorts and made them for the first time tonight. I can’t wait to make many more pairs!!
I have also found the, um, bum to be a bit snug as several other commenters have noted. I wondered if I cut the fabric pieces out incorrectly as far as direction of stretch? Which direction should the stretch go on the pattern pieces? Thanks for the help!
“Hi JennA ï¾–
Iï¾’m sorry you have found the Shorts are too tight!
I cut my Shorts with the side seams running straight along the grain, and the width of the shorts on the cross-grain. Depending on the fabric you use, this could add a little bit of give and stretch.
If you are uncomfortable with the fit of the shorts you made, you could try going up a size, but keeping the shorter elastic length to fit on the waist.
Or, if you like the fit in the front, but not the back, you could try going up a size in the back only. However, this adjustment would require some alterations in the Shorts length and Waistband as well.
I hope this helps!
-Corinne”
leuke ideeën. toffe site
Love, love, love! I am just getting back into sewing after a LONG absence and this was just what I needed. I extended the inseam an inch and they are perfect and so comfortable. Thanks for helping me get my sewing confidence back!
I’m trying to download the pdf file for the women’s and nothing happens when I click the link.
Hi Dani –
I am so sorry the link is giving you problems. When you click the PDF link, it should open a new tab or window in your browser with the pattern. If it’s not doing this, you can try using the “right click” or “control click” option on your mouse or keyboard. A window should appear next to the link with short menu. I recommend choosing the “Save Linked File” or “Download Linked File” option. If this still doesn’t work, please let me know!
-Corinne
Hi there! When I found your tutorial, I fell in love. I wear gym shorts all the time at home, in the garden, working with the chickens, etc. and all mine are just worn out. So I went and got new fabric especially for this project. I also bought double folded bias tape for the edges, which worked perfectly. I wish I could include a picture to show you how adorable these turned out for me. I haven’t read many comments, but I did want to say that I measure at 39″ at the hips and ended up going to the next size up (41″-43″) and just tightening the elastic a little bit more. This works great. I also put an inside pocket on each side to carry my phone around in. Thanks for the tutorial!
I would love to make these shorts! However, I have attempted to print the pattern 3 times and all of the “size guide lines” are not printing. Most of the sheets are printing the outline only. What am I doing wrong? I was hoping to make these tonight.
Hi Paula –
I’m sorry this pattern is giving you trouble!
Have you tried to piece together any of the print-outs yet? You will see that the side, curved edge and most of the bottom edge for both the Front and Back pieces of the Shorts pattern are drawn with one solid line for all sizes. The variation in sizing is mostly done in the inseam and along the top edge. If you haven’t yet, I recommend piecing your print-outs together and see how they come together, the pieces you have without the sizing lines may not be an issue.
If they still don’t look right, it might be a problem with the print out itself. Some of our other readers have had this type of issue. We have found that the secret is to first download the pattern and then print it. Rather than simply clicking the link and opening the PDF in a browser window, you should click on the pattern link using the “right click†or “control click†option on your mouse or keyboard. This will give you the option to “Download the linked file.†Once the file is downloaded, it should print like a charm!
I hope this helps!
Please let us know if you have any other questions as you work on this pattern.
-Corinne
Thanks so much for sharing this pattern! And the tutorial is easy to understand. I had made one and trying to find a short cut of using 12mm bias tape from shop…and it really tough to deal with….so please stick to 18mm and above as Corrine Tutorial…will want to make a few more…
Hi CS –
I’m so glad you enjoyed working on the pattern! And, thanks for the tip on the bias tape!
-Corinne
Made these last night for my daughter to wear to P.E. today! She loved them, and had I made her the right size, they would have fit perfectly! 😉
Easy to make, sew up quick, and would be even quicker if I owned a bias tape maker!
Thanks for such an awesome freebie!
I loved the pattern , first time making bias tape but fumbled through it. Thank you!
Hmm, does it matter how this pattern is laid onto the fabric? I’m still new to garment sewing, and learned about how dresses, in particular, can drape over the body oddly if not cut parallel to the grain yadda yadda! Is that the case for these shorts? Thank you so much for your help!
Hi Jeannie –
This is a great question! Generally, the rules that apply to dress sewing will apply to almost all other garments. For most patterns, you want the grain line (parallel to the selvage edge) to run up and down the garment, and the cross grain (perpendicular to the selvage) to run across the width of the garment. There are of course some exceptions when working with full skirts, knits, prints, etc.
For these Shorts, you will want to cut the Front and Back pieces so that the straight side edge runs parallel to the selvage, and the bottom edge runs perpendicular to it.
I hope this helps!
-Corinne
Hi there, thank you for the free pattern. Which way should the grain run on the waistband? Mine won’t fit lengthwise as my fabric is only 110cm wide. So my only option is to cut it crosswise. Is this okay? (I hope I have explained it right!) Thanks for your reply!
Hi Fiona –
This is a great question. I cut my Waistband cross-wise, from selvage to selvage, but if this is not possible with your fabric, you should have no problem cutting it parallel to the selvage edge. Alternatively, if you don’t have the length for this, you can also cut the waistband in two equal pieces (adding 5/8 inch to each piece to accommodate seam allowance) and piece together. If you do chose to do this, I recommend lining up the waistband seams with the two side seams of the Shorts rather than with the front and back.
I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions!
-Corinne
Hi. I made these and absolutely love them. I’m quite a big girl though so i did have to extend the pattern to fit my hips but the way the pieces fit together made this very easy. thank you so much.
Hello Grace! We’re so glad you made the pattern work for you!
Thanks for your kind words! Happy sewing! -Alyson
Just wanted to let you know that I lived in these shorts all summer, right up until last week when it was still 95 degrees in October. Spent one spring weekend sewing a dozen pair for myself, my daughter, and my grandson. They also make great pj bottoms for summer! (I sewed two pj versions in double gauze.)
Hello Liz!
We’re so happy the whole family loved these quick and comfy shorts! Stay warm this Fall! -Alyson
Thank you for these gorgeous shorts pattern. I will make some for my daughters and my grandchildren.

Hello Pauline!
We’re so glad you enjoy this pattern! Keep up the lovely stitching! -Alyson

Hallo Nancy –
Thank you for writing in! Unfortunately, none of us speak German well enough to respond to you in your native language, I’m sorry. However, I think you are asking about the links to the pattern pieces. I’ve checked the links to the pattern PDFs in the post and they seem to be working. You can find the Pattern PDF for the Kids’ pattern at the end of the Kids Materials list, and the Pattern PDF for the Women’s pattern at the end of the Women’s Material list.
Please let me know if these continue to give you trouble.
Thank you!
-Corinne
These are the cutest shorts! I am anxious to try making a pair for myself and 2 daughters. Do you have any other suggestions for a great fabric in place of the Tana Lawn? It is a little out of my budget. 🙂 Thanks for any input!
Hello, Kelcy!
Thank you for writing in! We have some great options for these shorts! If you’re looking for fun patterns I recommend Penny’s Dollhouse, Hints of Prints (these are on sale!), Botanics and Architextures or Luminous Yarn Dyes. If you don’t mind solid colors I recommend Kona Cotton, Chambray Union or Chambray Pin Dots. Please let us know what you think!
Best,
Kumeko
Excited to make these shorts!
I have a question on the numbers in parentheses.
3/4 (3/4, 3/4, 1, 1) yard
1 (1, 1, 2, 2) yard
Are those yardage requirements for the different sizes? As in sizes 33 – 40 would require 3/4 yard for that pattern piece but sizes 41-46 would require 1 yard?
Then sizes 33-40 = 1 yard and 41-46 = 2 yards for the next pattern piece?
Thank you!
Hello Alysa –
Yes! You’ve got it right. The numbers in the parentheses correspond to the different sizes. For example, if you are making the first size in the list, you will always use the first number in the list in the fabric measurements.
I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions about specific sizes or measurements.
-Corinne
Trying to help a new sewer and wondered if the back of the shorts for adults are better out of a little heavier fabric . We showed her chambray ,but suggested the light cottons would be better for the front only. Thank you Janeese
Hi Janeese,
Great question! We love our version with the slightly heavier chambray on the back and the lawn on the front. We have seen versions using a lighter fabric for both the back and front that have held up very well. I think that any way you go, so long as the fabric is not too much thinner than a lawn, you should be good to go!
Happy sewing!
Cassy
I am frequently touting your wonderful site to everyone! If you notice traffic from Nova Scotia, that’s perhaps why. Love the shorts! They will be the featured item for all 5 sisters at our annual sister retreat in Montreal. Great instructions and fit!
Hi! I downloaded the pattern as you suggested before printing; however, I cannot get the dotted lines to print as well. Would you send me the modified pattern as well please?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Lisa,
Thanks for writing in to us! I’m sorry this ins’t printing! I could send you the pattern, but it would just be the same as the one on the website. Could it be that your printer settings are off? Also, try printing just black and white. Let me know how it goes!
-Adam
Thanks for the lovely pattern!
http://yanem.blogspot.be/2016/08/gym-short.html
Thank you for sharing your photos, Katja! Great work!
Made several pairs for my daughter over the last week. The first pair was a bit too snug (I went with her waist measurement to pick the size), so I went up a size and the next pairs turned out great. Lightweight dark denim front and back with bright patterned bias tape and waistband. So cute! Thanks for the great pattern!
Hi 🙂
Can I use the pattern also for a pyjama pant? I’m worrying about the edges where the two sides with the bia tapes come together – is this still thin enogh not to hurt when lying on it? Wanted to use a single jersey fabric.
Best regards,
Blanche
Hi Blanche,
This sounds like a great idea! I don’t think that the overlap of the bias tape will be noticeable at all — especially in a jersey fabric. Best of luck and happy sewing!
-Adam
I have looked and looked on this page and cant find a link to the pattern and can’t find it in the shop either. Is this pattern still available? and is it a free pattern?
Thanks so much, love these and hoping to make a few pairs for my daughter.
Hi Esther,
Thanks for writing in! The links to the patterns can be found in the Materials section as the last item for each size category. For your convenience, I am including the links here for you:

Please excuse my ignorance but it’s hard to hide!! What/where is the pattern link? I really want to print this pattern but just cannot figure out how to do it. Do you have instructions for dummies?
Hello Lou,
depending on which pattern you are doing, either kids or women’s if you scroll down to materials for kids the link to the pattern is the last bullet point. For the Women’s pattern it is also the last bullet point, just right click or control click where it says template available and it will give you the option to download the linked file, once that is done you are ready to print the pattern.
Best,
Melissa
Hallo, i can not find the dounload link. Is it expired?

I know this was a couple years ago. But maybe just maybe someone will respond! Has anyone done this pattern in a sweat fabric? Also I am sort of new to the fabric world, does the cotton recommended have any stretch? I was hoping to use some French Terry I have to make up some shorts. And then was planning on ordering some more as I have lots of cotton Lycra however I think that might be too stretchy! Just wondering what I should order. I am from Canada so hoping to shop locally to avoid the custom costs!
Hi Megan,
Thanks for writing in! We used a woven fabric here with no stretch. Working with stretchy knit fabrics is very different than working with woven fabrics. You will need to be sure not to stretch the fabric as you sew it with your machine. This can be a bit tricky but it is accomplishable. I would suggest checking out some YouTube tutorials regarding working with knits on a standard machine.
Additionally, the construction of these shorts uses bias tape along the edges. Bias tape is generally made out of a woven fabric and as such will not stretch. That is to say that when used in combination with a knit, it will prevent the knit from stretching along the parts where it is present. You will need to get knit bias tape if you use a knit.
I hope that this helps!
Cassy
Hi, sorry if this has been addressed somewhere but I don’t know if I’m doing this wrong or if I’ve mucked something up. I went with the largest size as I’m new to sewing and really prone to having things end up a bit small so it usually works out, and that would have been two sizes higher than I needed. Unfortunately, I can’t even get the waistband over my thighs. It doesn’t stretch far enough though the elastic and waistband ought to both be big enough. Is this something I’m doing wrong? Did I misunderstand something?
Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for writing in and I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulties! I am not quite sure what could have happened. When you printed the pattern, did the square on the first page measure 1″ in both directions? If the pattern printed smaller, this could be the problem. Additionally, using larger seam allowances than listed can make the shorts come out a bit tighter but not as tight as you have mentioned here. Please let us know if either one of these was the issue.
I hope that this helps!
Cassy
Is the pattern printed the same as the picture above? Or did you shorten the pattern pieces at all? I definitely want that length the pattern just seemed longer to my eye. But before I cut this fabric I bought I want to make sure lol. Also I haven’t much experience with woven fabric. I have this adorable little quilting store in Cochrane AB however it is filled with mostly quilting 100% cotton. Can you use that? Or is that too stiff? It makes me slightly confused because so much fabric says 100% cotton however i just don’ know what I am looking for to make these. Thanks so much for your help! Look forward to making these 😀
Hi Meagn,
Thanks for writing in! The printed pattern is exactly what we used for this fun shorts! No lengthening or shortening required!
We used a lightweight woven fabric here but we have seen these shorts made from many different fabrics. Quilting Cotton would work fine for this pattern as drape is not really an issue. Quilting Cotton tends to be stiffer than light weight woven fabrics and thus be an issue when making a drapey blouse of dress but in this application should work just great!
I hope that this helps!
Cassy
Hey. Is the requirements for the bias tape in with the amount of solid fabric needed? Meaning if i buy a yard of fabric will there be enough for the back pattern piece and bias tape? Thanks. Cant wait to make them.
Hi Sara,
Thanks for writing in! The yardage for the solid fabric does include room to make the bias tape!
Happy sewing!
Cassy
Thanks. And thanks for the fast reply. ?
Love these! I couldn’t find any shorts I liked in the shops but I came across this pattern. I made them in a stretch sweatshirt fabric and will make a few amendments to the pattern for the next pair. My daughter also wants several pairs!
Very easy to follow tutorial, thank you.
Good morning from Spain!
I’m just excited for sewing your pattern… just couple of doubts!
Are seam allowances included or I should add them?
After soooooo many people having sewn them, do you think they tend to fit as the size says, or it is better to go upsize or downsize? Of course it depends on each one preferences but for a “proper” fitting as it shows in your pictures?
Thanks in advance!!
Hi Laia,
Thanks for writing in! Seam allowances are included in the pattern so there is no need to add them. There have been many people to make these lovely shorts with varying results as far a fit; from they fit perfectly as is, to a larger size needed to be made based on their measurements. I would suggest making a muslin with some scrap fabric to see how they fit you. You can always go up or down a size if the fit is not perfect for you!
Best,
Cassy
Just finished my first pair! The fit was perfect, thanks so much for this super pattern.
Hi! I can’t wait to try this, but I can’t see the pattern link, am I blind? thank you!
Hi Barbara,
If you are doing the women’s or the kids pattern the link to the pattern is the 6th bullit point down.
I hope this helps,

These are so cute!! I love the fabric you picked for your example photos.
I’ve made several of these for my daughter who uses them for pajama bottoms. She has now outgrown the last set so I am making her bigger ones. Great pattern and fit.
Cute pattern! Can you tell me why the largest size (girls 11) is sized to a different grade rule than the other sizes? Thanks so much!
Hi Janet,
Thanks for writing in! You’re right, the grading is a little bit off! Hundreds and hundreds of people have sewn this pattern, but you’re the first person to point this out to us. We’ve been scratching our heads wondering how this is possible, but when we cut and assembled the pattern ourselves, we realized that the largest size is only off by 1/4 of an inch and only on the front panels. Within the margin of error, so to speak, this slight irregularity hasn’t adversely effected the outcome of the project as far as we’re aware, but we will definitely work to correct this mistake! Thank you so much for pointing it out and please let us know how your City Shorts turn out!
Best,
Cassy
Really love this pattern, just complete the short pant. Will make it more. Luv from Malaysia.. thanks..
Fab pattern & my new favourite sewing projects. The age 4-5 fit my (big) nearly 4 year old perfectly & he loves them.
I can’t seem to find the pattern to download. There is no link to pdf in the text. Is it no longer available?
Hi Margarita,

Hello, thank you for the lovely pattern. May I ask what height the women’s pattern is drafted for?
Thanks!
Hi Rhe,
Thanks for writing in! These lovely shorts were not drafted with a particular height in mind but rather with the hopes of fitting a wide range of heights and body types. I have seen these sorts on women from 5’1″ up to 5’11” myself and they look great on just about everyone!
I hope that this helps!
Cassy
Thank you for this lovely pattern, I have been having a lot of fun playing around with it, adding pockets and the like.
I would love to know how you added pockets to these shorts! I’m in the process of making all the cuts for these shorts, and I am totally stumped on how to add pockets.
Hi Sarah,
Great idea! While I am not sure of the best way to add pockets to these lovely shorts, you can add them between the front and back panels when assembling them though it may take some trial and error to get things just right. I would suggest assembling the pockets and finishing the seams first and then pinning them in place before assembling the shorts.
I do hope that this helps!
Cassy
I just made a pair of shorts, and can see more in the future. I have not tried it yet, but just drafted a pocket “hack.” My plan is to cut two fronts: one will be the “true” front and one will be the pocket. From the true front I will cut out a scoop shape for where your hand will enter the pocket (like on a pair of jeans or khakis). I’ll bind it with bias tape. On the “pocket” set of front pieces, I’ll vertically cut off the crotch shape 6″ to 8″ from the side seam and serge (or otherwise finish that cut edge). I’ll lay the true front pieces over the pocket front pieces, matching the top edges, and the side curve. Topstitch the serged edge in place with a vertical line of stitching, and topstitch the portion of the scooped cutout that will be in the waistband so you don’t get the elastic stuck under there while inserting it. Then construct the garment per the pattern instructions. Hopefully this will work!
Hi, I love your shorts pattern and you did a great job with the tutorial. I want to try it, but I’m not sure which size to cut. Are the measurements for the hips the finished size of the shorts, or general hip measurements? Trying to choose between two sizes. Thank you so much for your help, Kelly
Hi Kelly,
Thanks for writing in and for the kind words! The finished shorts will include about one inch of ease over the larger hip size listed – for instance, for the 33-34 size, the finished measurement will be 35 inches. You can determine the exact finished measurement for each size by checking the length of the Waistband piece and subtracting a 5/8″ seam allowance.
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Help, please! I’ve sewn up my shorts and am trying to add the waistband, but it’s much bigger than the shorts and ended up with ugly bunching. I’ve checked my pattern several times; what could I have done wrong? I have plenty of seam ripping in my near future.
Hi Bridget,
Oh no, I’m sorry to hear the waistband isn’t fitting correctly! The waistband should be the same size as the top of the shorts. Is it possible that your template did not print at the correct scale? Some printers or computers print at less than 100% scale by default, so I would measure the 1″ square on page one of the printed template to make sure it printed to the correct size. The other likely culprit would be the seam allowances – the shorts are sewn with 1/4″ seam allowances which is quite a bit smaller than most patterns, so if you are used to using a 1/2″ or 5/8″ seam allowance that would also have made the shorts turn out too small.
I hope one of those turns out to be the issue so you can finish your project! If you have any other questions please let us know!
Best,
Julianna
Where can I find the gymshort pattern to download
Hi Petra,
Thanks for writing in! If you scroll up to the Materials list, you will see that the last bullet point under the sections titled Women and Kids includes a link to the template for each size set!
Best of luck and happy sewing!
Julianna
Can these be made with a jersey (low stretch) using some ribbing instead of the bias binding?
Hi Sarah,
Great question! We have not tried using a knit with this pattern. It may well work but not having tried it, we cannot say for certain. You can certainly give it a go and if you do, do let us know!
Best,
Cassy
Hi Cassy, thnx so much for this free pattern! I lov’it!And so does my granddaughter for whom I’m sewing this. But I’m a bit puzzled with the length of the waistband : 30 3/4 inch? Now I am Dutch so maybe I’m converting inches wrongly to centimeters but I seems to me a very long waistband. Her waist measures only 56 cm and that’s 22 inches (according to my calculation ?). What am I doing/reading wrong?
Best regards!
Hi Annelies,
Thanks for reaching out! I am happy to help! The ages for the sizes here are based on standard sizing, however, if you have your granddaughter’s actual measurements, this is a much better way to get a good fit! To fit a waist of 22 inches, you will want to pick the 4th size (ages 6-7) and cut a waistband that is 28 3/4 inches. When you sew the two ends together, the band will be shortened by 1 1/4 inches to 27 1/2 inches. The additional inches will be scrunched up with the elastic for the waist band to give a comfortable fit. Remember also that the elastic that you cut will be a lot closer to the actual waist measurement, allowing for a good fit without the shorts falling down!
I hope that this clears things up!
Cassy
Where is the link to download the pattern for the shorts. I can’t find it buried anywhere on this page! How annoying!
Hi Deborah,
I’m so sorry to hear you are having trouble finding the template! You can access by clicking right here, or for future reference, it is linked in the materials list for the pattern.
Best of luck and happy sewing!
Julianna
I just made these for my daughter who is incredibly hard to please. She LOVES them!!! Great pattern and great instructions! (You had me nervous aattaching the waistband!)
Hi ! Thanks for tutorial, it looks very good !! Sorry, but I have a question (I’m french and I never sew clothes that my first time ahah but, yes I did other things…) Ok, so I’m looking for the XS size, but I’m lost because it’s in us size… Could you help me? is it 34? or a kids size who correspond ton XS? thanks!
Hi Marylou,
Thanks for reaching out! There are two sets of sizes, Kids and Womens, both of which include either finished measurements in inches or what hip size in inches they should fit. Since an XS can mean different things across different brands, I would go by the given inch measurements and convert them to centimeters using an online calculator. You can then decide which size will be best for you!
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Couldn’t get the link for the pattern which was just frustrating I’ve heard great things about this pattern but I’m very annoyed that it would not work
Hello Catie,
Thank you for reaching out! Are you having trouble downloading the PDF of the pattern or the template? For the Pattern PDF on a desktop version of the site, you will find a “print” icon in the right column just below the date and tags. If you’re on a mobile version of the site, you will find a “print” icon below the pattern and above the comments.
Follow the easy on-screen instructions to delete whichever parts of the pattern you don’t want to print or save. For example, you may decide to shorten the pattern by omitting certain images or the list of materials. To remove images, click the drop down next to the image icon and change from 100% to 0%.
To print out the template, we have found that the secret is to first download the pattern and then print it. Rather than simply clicking the link and opening the PDF in a browser window, you should click on the pattern link using the “right click” or “control click” option on your mouse or keyboard. This will give you the option to “Download the linked file.” Once the file is downloaded, it should print like a charm!
I hope this helps and let us know if you continue to have issues!
-Marilla
Hi I’ve downloaded pattern from ur link , but it has 6 pieces , I’m unsure why I’ve tried link several times , looks like 2 pockets too , thank you Leia
Hi Leia,
Thanks for reaching out! Since the shorts pattern is too large to fit on a single piece of paper, it does print out on six pieces of paper, which you will have to piece together following the indications at the edge of each piece of the pattern. After assembling the pattern, you will have two pattern pieces, one for the front and one for the back of the shorts.
I hope that clears things up!
Julianna
Oh dear me !!!
Yes i see now, I’ve cut out pieces selotaped together now have a front and back pattern , total beginner 🙂
Thank you
Thanks for the pattern! Do you think it’d work using lawn and tencel?
Hi Sonya,
Thanks for writing in! Any light to medium weight woven fabric will work for these shorts – since tencel fiber is used in a variety of fabrics, you will just want to make sure it is a woven fabric and not a knit.
Best,
Julianna
Hi from France,
I’m about to sew the short but can’t find the correspondance about the sizes … (33-34 looks like which size in EU? = 34?)
Thanks for your help!
Hi Constance,
Thanks for writing in! I am happy to help! For this pattern (and most of our patterns), the size is based on actual measurements rather than standard sizing. We find that this gives you a better fit! For this pattern, the sizes are to fit hip sizes 33-34 (35-37, 38-40, 41-43, 44-46) inches in circumference. To figure out your size, you will want to measure the fullest part of your hips in inches (or convert from centimeters to inches) and select the size that will fit your hips. This pattern does tend to fit a bit on the tighter side so if you want a looser fit, you may want to go up a size!
I hope that this helps!

Hello,
I want to make the shorts with one fabric. I will use different fabric for the bias binding and waist band. Could you tell me how much I will need? I will make a size 11 in kids and most likely the 1st or second of the women’s size. Thank you!! I tried to figure it out. I just want to be sure I order enough fabric. Thank you! Cant wait to make them!
Hi Erika,
Thanks for reaching out! I would suggest going by the yardage amounts used for our Lana Cotta Canberra version since they are made of just one fabric with a contrast band and bias binding, although you will be omitting the lining fabric. Keep in mind that the Lana Cotta fabric is quite wide, 54 to 56 inches, so you may need more if you are using a narrower fabric.
Best of luck and happy sewing!
Julianna
Thanks so much for this shorts pattern! Can’t wait to get started!
Hello!! I have made several shorts for me. Gone everywhere with them, and I have been ask to sew to sell for few people. But I wanna make sure you allow that. It’s your pattern And I wanna make things right! If I can do it, let me know, obviously your name for the pattern it’s gonna be share for each one I sell.
Hello Hilnerys,
Thank you for your interest in our patterns! While we’re happy you like our City Gym Shorts, our patterns and designs are are for home use only. This means that you can’t use our patterns to make things for sale. We hope you understand!
Thank you for getting in touch!

Hi! Are the rise on these shorts low, medium or high? What is the average height made for this pattern? I can adjust accordingly. I am 5’11 and my daughters are 5’8″ and 6′. Thank you for your help!
Hi Lori,
Thanks for writing in! I would say that the rise on these lovely shorts is a medium rise. My own pairs come up to about 2-3 inches below my belly button but this may vary for you! We did not create these shorts with a particular height in mind. I am 5’5″ and they work well for me but you certainly can lengthen them if you feel they are a bit too short. You can print out the pattern template and measure the length from the top of the pattern piece to the bottom and add an inch for the waistband to get an idea if the length would work for you. To lengthen the shorts, you can add inches to the bottom, being sure to also move the side curve down!
I hope that this helps!

Great pattern and template!! French speaker (and beginner) I could understand everything! I made one for my daughter (size 3yo) in jersey, it looks great! Can’t wait to try it on her! Thank you for your work, it really helps people like me, and it gives us more confidence in sewing! Surely, I’ll do the same for me!
Charlotte (Belgium)
Hi from Aotearoa New Zealand! Thanks for the pattern. I just made one pair for my nearly 7 year old using left overs and they are so cute. I think I’ll have to rustle through all my scraps and make more pairs.
Thanks for this pattern. Thought this would be a good project for my first go at bias binding. The parts came together very quickly, and instructions were clear. I went up a size and was glad I did so, as well as lengthening the shorts by 1″ (again, easy to do on your pattern – thank you!). The bound seams gave me an opportunity to add some pockets too, so the final product (made out of a 1970’s lilac and baby blue floral print vintage bedsheet!) was an adorable success. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this pattern! A quick sew and a precious short!
hi., there’s no link for the pattern? pls where can I download it thank you 🙂
Hi Marjorie,
Thanks for reaching out! You can find the free template linked above in the Materials section of the pattern, or by clicking right here for the Kids’ Template or Women’s Template!
Happy sewing!
Julianna
I just finished these in kid’s size 6-7. They are lovely!! I thought I’d have to lengthen them a bit for my long legged kiddo but they turned out perfect. I added slash pockets in the side seams by sewing a pocket piece under the bias strips on the side seams. I then sewed the front shorts piece to the back just at the top and bottom of the side seams. Then sewing around the pocket on the inside of the shorts created a beautiful, inseam pocket. I’m so thrilled with this pattern, thank you so much for sharing!
I just made the kid’s version. It was really easy and I can’t wait to make the women size with pockets. It will be great for the summer and I’ll know it will fit the way I want. I’m also going to try a knit version. These are just so cute my girl and I will have a bunch for this summer!
HI Vab,
We are so delighted to hear this and hope that they are well enjoyed when the weather heats up!
Best,
Cassy

Hello! Trying to make these for my very skinny teenage daughter. Her waist is 27″ which falls inbetween the sizes offered. Any suggestions?
Thank you!
Hi Sarah,
Thank you for writing in! It does sound like your daughter is a bit too big for the Did sizes. My recommendation would be to try the smallest Women’s size, which is made to fit a hip circumference of 33-34 inches rather than a waist size. Once you’re ready to sew the ends of your elastic together, you can adjust the elastic length to suit her exact waist size.
I hope this helps!
Gaby
where is the link to this pattern?

Thank you very much indeed!!!!!
These shorts are fantastic! This was my first experience making shorts. I followed the pattern for a little while, and then kind of freehanded the rest using what I remembered of the instructions. the only problem I had was getting the bias tape around the curves. any recommendations? I also would have made the shorts a bit wider for a larger range of motion. Overall, It was a great pair of shorts.
Hi Mallory,
It’s so great to hear that you had fun with this project! For applying bias tape, lots of pins to gently ease the bias tape around the curves is the best way to go, along with slow and careful stitching.
Best,
Cassandra
Hello,
I’m very keen to try this pattern but was wondering if it’s adapted for US or UK paper when printed? I know they’re different, and I don’t want to risk printing it if it won’t work – I’d be printing it on European standard A4 paper, would that work with the dimensions?
Thank you!
Hi Louise,
Thanks for reaching out about this! The City Gym Shorts patterns have a square printed at the top right that should measure 1″. You can use this to double check your printout for accuracy. As long as you don’t scale your print it should work out, but if you need more help with this, please let me know!
Happy Crafting!
Cassandra
Hi there! I thought that I followed the pattern to a T…but my waistband is some how shorter than the waist of the shorts – so when I go to pin them together there would need to be bunching to sew them – it looks like it should not be this way according to your photos. I am also confused about how to elastic is being put into the waste band – is it not supposed to be sewn together to form a large loop or is free floating? I feel like I am missing some steps. Any info you have would be great. Thank you!
Hi Paola,
Thanks for reaching out, and I’m so sorry that the waistband isn’t attaching smoothly! The waistband should be the same size as the top of the shorts. I would first double check that you cut the correct size waistband – for kids sizes, it should be 23 (24 ¼, 26 ¾, 28 ¾, 30 ¾, 32 ½, 33 ½) inches long; or for Women, 36 ¼ (38 ½, 41 ¾, 45 ½, 48) inches long. This issue could also be caused by the pattern template printing to the wrong scale, so I would also recommend checking the 1″ square on page 1 of the template to make sure it actually measures 1″.
Once you have the waist band size sorted out, you will be sewing it into a loop before attaching it to the shorts. Under the pattern heading “Sew The Waistband,” you can see that you first fold and press the waistband to create the elastic casing, then open up the folds and sew the two short ends together to form a loop before sewing one long edge to the top of the shorts.
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Hello from the Netherlands,
I would very much like to sew this gym short for my grand daughter. Is this free download pattern or can I buy it? I cannot find any download or ordering button. I hope you can answer me. Thank you in advance.
Regards, Yvonne
Hi Yvonne,
Thank you so much for reaching out! This pattern is completely free! You can find a link to the templates in the materials list above, or by clicking right here for the kids’ template, or right here for the women’s template! The assembly instructions can be found above and can be printed using our print function. If you’re on a desktop version of the site, you will find a “print” icon in the right column just below the date and tags. If you’re on a mobile version of the site, you will find a “print” icon below the pattern and above the comments. This will open a dialogue that allows you to select what portions of the instructions and images you wish to print!
I hope that helps!

Het gedownloade patroon geeft maten aan in inch. Hoe krijg ik het in cm..??
Hi Tini
Thanks so much for writing in! I like to use an online conversion tool. Just search “convert inches to cm” and a purpose-built calculator will appear to enter the numbers you wish to translate. I hope this helps!
Happy sewing
Jessica
Hi! I’ve made these shorts four or five times, and just finished another pair. I’m in the second-to-last size, and it occurs to me that the size range on this pattern isn’t very size-inclusive. Do you have any plans to update the size range for your patterns? I really appreciate that your more recent knitting patterns offer a large size range, and these shorts are so great, it would be fantastic if more people could make them!
Hi Emma
Thanks for writing in! We don’t currently have the resources to add more sizes to this pattern, and share your concern that patterns be as inclusive as possible. We really do appreciate that bodies come in all shapes and sizes! I will certainly pass your request along to the design team. We greatly appreciate your feedback!
Best
Jessica
i made one yesterday..it was sooooo nice..it fits perfectly…:) thank you so much for the pattern and tutorial..it’s my first time doing a shorts..I’m a newbie in sewing…thank you once again…:)
Hi Jhona
We are so happy these worked perfectly for you! Sounds like another pair is coming up!
Warmly
Jessica
I don’t understand step 2 of the waistband section- “Open up the folds at the two short ends. With right sides together, stack the ends together, matching up their raw edges. Pin in place. Sew along the short edge with a 5/8-inch seam allowance.
Press the seam to one side and sew it down with an edgestitch”.
The photo doesn’t help me. Do you have a photo of the step before it’s finished?
Hi Kathy,
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately we don’t have another picture of this step, but hopefully I can explain it a little better! In this step, you will be sewing the two short edges of the waistband together to form a long loop. Before sewing, you will have to temporarily unfold the creases you just pressed so that the two right sides of the fabric lay flush against each other. You will then finish the edges of this seam by pressing the seam allowances to one side and stitching them down.
I hope that clears things up!
Julianna
I think I understand it now- thanks so much! If there had been a photo showing that this step would be creating a complete circle (loop) of waistband (or a sentence saying something like “now you will create the loop of the waistband”, it would have helped me a lot. I’m making these for my 15 yr-old soccer-playing granddaughter- she loves gym shorts, but was finding it hard to find fabrics she liked. Now she can pick from so many options! She and I thank you very much!
Thank you so much for this free pattern!! It makes my favorite pair of shorts, it’s hard to find shorts that fit over my wide thighs but these are perfect.
Thank you for this fantastic pattern! The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and the sizing is spot on. I’ve made two pairs of these shorts, and they both turned out great!
Love this! Thanks for sharing! Do you have a video tutorial for it?
Hi Jayne,
Thank you so much for the kind words! We don’t have the resources at the moment to create a video for this pattern, but I will be sure to pass your request along to the design team!
Best,
Julianna
Hi! I love this pattern and have made my daughter many pairs of these shorts. I was just curious if you have ever considered releasing a women’s plus size version. I would be willing to purchase a pattern this awesome if it came in my size. Thanks!!!
Hi Toni,
We are very sorry that our City Gym Shorts don’t currently come in your size range. We really do appreciate that bodies come in all shapes and sizes and share your concern that patterns be as inclusive as possible. As a small company, we haven’t yet had the resources to offer the scope of sizes we would like to, but as our company grows, we have been steadily expanding that range and plan to continue to do so!
Please be on the lookout, and thank you so much for adding your voice to this issue. We greatly appreciate your feedback!
Best,
Julianna
Thanks so much! Great pattern d tutorial. I even did the bias binding myself (first time for everything!) I tried these & added a couple of inches in length & adore them! I used blue chambray & leftover liberty from a top I made (making, haven’t quite finished yet). Wish I could attach a picture to show you!
These are so adorable! I made them for myself using a plaid for the back piece and a coordinating paisley for the front. I used solid colored bias tape for the trim. They look expensive and designer. Thank you so much for sharing this pattern.
Thanks for this pattern! I made these a couple of years ago and wear them a lot, getting ready to make another pair❤
I can not find the pattern in this tutorial. I see PATTERN, but there is nothing to click on or download to print. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help, I would like to make these for my daughter and her college friends.
Hi Patricia,
Thanks for writing in! You can find link to download the pattern in the materials list above, or by clicking right here for the Kids template or here for the Women’s template.
Happy sewing!
Julianna
Can you provide link to download this pattern. I can print and download the instruction but unable to find the short’s template or pattern. Thank you!
Hi Lylan,
Thanks for writing in! You can find link to download the pattern in the materials list above, or by clicking right here for the Kids template or here for the Women’s template.
Happy sewing!
Julianna
Thank you so much ++++! I’m so looking forward to make these shorts for my daughter.
I want to make these, can you tell me how long they are in inseam?
Thank you.
Hi LeeAnn,
Thanks for writing in! These shorts have a fairly short inseam – only about 1.5-2″ for the adult sizes – but you can easily adjust the pattern to make it longer if you wish!
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Thank you I did add length, I am also making bias tape myself . Instructions say to cut 2 PC’s 60″ length and 1-5/8 wide so once the tape is folded what size is it? Mine came out 1/2 inch once all folds are made, is this right?
Thank you ?
Hi LeeAnn,
Yes, that sounds correct! After folding the bias tape in half, it should measure just under a half inch!
Best,
Julianna
I feel like the pattern pieces attached to this tutorial do not look like the ones used here. The front pieces on the PDF do not have as much of a curve.
Hi Alicia,
Thanks for reaching out! The pattern pieces attached are the same pieces we used to make these shorts!
Keep in mind that in order for the template to be printer friendly we had to dissect the pieces and you will need to tape the correct pieces together to get the full pattern pieces. Each piece is labeled, and will indicate which piece will be attached to which! For example, the front piece (D) will be attached to both pieces A and B for the complete pattern piece.
I hope this clears things up!
Warmly,
Gianna
Thank you so much!!
Im relatively new to sewing but was about to tackle these in muslin before diving into nicer fabric.
My question is: is there a reason the pattern is lettered (A-H) but the written instructions don’t include the letters for clarity sake?
Most commenters don’t seem to have this issue but I think it would help us newbies.
Thanks!
I guess I see now that we don’t use every part of the template? Which letters do we use?
Thx!
Hi Dorothy,
Thanks for reaching out! The letters are to help you assemble the template. Before you cut anything out of fabric, you will need to cut out each piece of the template, which prints out over 8 pages of paper, and tape them together to form the complete pattern piece. Each lettered piece of the template has instructions on the edges telling you which other lettered piece to attach it to. When you’re finished, you will have two pattern pieces, one for the front of the shorts and one for the back, and can cut or trace off your size!
I hope that clears things up!
Julianna
Yes I had a friend explain it to me and felt like a dummy!
Thanks for the response.
These are super cute! My 12 year old wants me to make them for her but I’m unsure if I should do the kids or the women’s. The kids size stops at a 25″ waist and the women’s starts at a 33″ hip. She prefers to wear them on her hips but her hips are 29″ any suggestion on what I should do? I’m thinking it should be okay if I did the smallest women’s because the elastic should keep them up but I don’t want them to be bunched crazy.
Hi Andrea,
Great question! I think the smallest women’s size would probably be a good fit – you’re correct about the elastic holding them up! When measuring her hips for the women’s sizes, you should be measuring around the largest part of her hips, which is usually several inches lower than where the shorts would actually be worn. Just to be on the safe side, I would recommend sewing a muslin in an inexpensive fabric to make sure they will fit before cutting into your final fabric!
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Hello, I’m french so I’m sorry if my english isn’t very well.
I don’t find on the tuto if the “cutting marging” (I don’t know if it is the good word) is on the template.
Can you help Me.
Thanks a lot for this short it is very good.
Bye
Elise
Hi Elise,
Thanks for writing in! Our template includes the seam allowance, so there’s no need to add one!
Best,
Julianna
What a wonderful pattern and this is i was looking for. would like to know if i can use a stretchy fabric….thanks
Hi Monique,
Thanks for writing in! This pattern is written for a woven non-stretchy fabric, so it’s hard to say what exactly will happen if you try it in a knit fabric. Stretchy fabrics usually require a closer fit than woven ones, so you might be able to simply make a size or two smaller than you normally would. I would recommend trying a practice pair in an inexpensive knit to see how it goes!
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Hi Monique,
I made mine using a 95% lycra and 5% polyester stretch knit with fold ever elastic binding just using the size I normally would and it worked well 🙂 I would say as long as your knit has good recovery and is relatively stable it will work! It’s a great pattern!
Sasha
hello thank you for offer this free pattern. I have click on the print link open and downloaded but all I seem to get is only the instruction. I am not sure what i am doing wrong. for the when i go to download and click pattern there is not pattern attached only 24 pages of instructions. please help please and thank you.
Hi Sharmaine,
I’m so sorry you’re having trouble with that! Let’s see if I can get everything working for you.
When you click on the Print link, are you seeing two icons with percentage values on the initial page you see? One should look like a T with arrows on the left for text, and the other looks like a mountain with a sun on top on the right. The T represents text or instructions, and the mountain represents images. The default is 100%. If you want to see all the pictures please make sure that is set to 100%.
I hope that helps. Please let me know if you continue to have any issues!
All the best,
Zha Zha
Thanks for explaining this! Never knew how to get rid of the pictures!
I have made these shorts 3 times now. I love the easy to follow directions. The shorts are so comfortable! I made myself 2 pairs with matching masks. I just made my sister a pair for her birthday. Please continue to share these wonderful garment sewing directions.
Hi Cristine,
Thanks you so much for writing in and for your kind words! I am so happy to hear that you love this pattern!
All the best,
Gianna
Hi
I love the pattern…..but I am stuck,
Sorry….newbie sewer….I cut out two waistband pieces….but the instructions appear to say I am to cut one long piece of different measurements? Would appreciate help walking me through the waistband:) thanks so much!
Hi Cynthia,
Thanks for reaching out! For the waistband you should only cut one 4 ¾-inch wide piece for Women, either 36 ¼ (38 ½, 41 ¾, 45 ½, 48) inches long depending on what size you are making! The numbers within the parentheses correspond to the size you are making, the sizes are for WOMEN To fit hip sizes 33-34 (35-37, 38-40, 41-43, 44-46) inches in circumference. So for example, if you are making the Womens size for 35-37 circumference you would cut your 4 ¾-inch wide piece 38 ½ inches long.
I hope this clarifies things!
Warmly,
Gianna
Hey! I’d love to do this project but my hips are just a bit bigger than the largest women’s size, how do Increase the pattern?
Hi Korina,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes you can certainly adjust the size! You can expand the hip pattern pieces based on your measurements, I would assemble the pieces together and then all a bit to each side as necessary to achieve your size!
I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions!
Warmly,
Gianna
The sizing on these is so small! There doesn’t seem to be any positive ease in the pattern at all, so the hip size you choose will be skin tight next to your hips – I made a pair to my measurements and will have to give them away to a teen. Not so good for those of us with curves 😕
Hi Erin,
Thanks for reaching out! We are very sorry that our pattern isn’t fitting comfortably. We really do appreciate that bodies come in all shapes and sizes and share your concern that patterns be as inclusive as possible, and I am happy to report that we are in the midst of expanding the size range of our patterns! We are steadily working to make sure this is true of all our patterns. Please be on the lookout, and thank you so much for adding your voice to this issue. We greatly appreciate your feedback!
Warmly,
Gianna
Hello,
Thank you for the very clear instructions and the shorts look lovely, but I don’t know how to download the pattern pieces.
I tried with the print button on the top of the instructions but only the instructions are printed. If you could help me I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.
Hi Ana,
Thanks for reaching out! You can find the template under the MATERIALS section of the pattern. Here is the Women’s template, and here is the Kids’s template !
Warmly,
Gianna
I tend to like to wear things below my belly button. where is this pattern designed to sit so I can choose my size accordingly 🙂
Hi Erin,
Thanks for reaching out! These shorts sit above the hips just below the belly button!
I hope this helps, happy crafting!
Gianna
hi, does the pattern include the seam allowance?
thank you 🙂
Hi Claudia,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes, the pattern includes seam allowance!
Happy sewing!
Gianna
Hi there,
I absolutely love this pattern!!! I have made 2 pairs already and am now making another 2. All for my daughters lol
But I’ve been having problems with sewing the crutch together. They never seem to line up with the same width. I have no idea why. It makes it really hard to put the bias on.
I’ve been making my own bias too which makes the satisfaction even greater at the end for me 😉
Thanks for your help,
Alice
Hi Alice,
Thanks for reaching out about this. We’re eager to look into this issue for you, but it would help if we could have more information about your project! Can you let us know what size you’re making now, and what sizes you’ve made in the past? It would also help greatly if you could send over a photo of the pieces that don’t match up to [email protected], so we can better visualize what’s going on. I’ll keep an eye out for your reply!
All the best,
Lili
Hi
I am surprised by the sizes. I am an average, size Medium Dutch woman with hips. Hip measurs 112 cm, that is 44 inch and it means I would need the biggest size you offer?
I think it is a very good idea to include more sizes and to match them to maybe USA and European standard sizes.
I am afraid to start now, thinking it will be too small.
It is supercute though
Hi Marjolein,
We are very sorry that we don’t currently offer a wider range of sizes for this pattern. It looks like the largest size would definitely fit you though, so I don’t think it will come out too small!
We really do appreciate that bodies come in all shapes and sizes and share your concern that patterns be as inclusive as possible. We are in the midst of expanding the size range of all our sweater patterns and are happy to report that many of them now fit chest sizes up to 62-64 inches. We are steadily working to make sure this is true of all our patterns. Please be on the lookout, and thank you so much for adding your voice to this issue. We greatly appreciate your feedback!
All the best,
Lili
Hi
I love making the city gym shorts and have made them for adults and kids! Recently, I made the size 2 for a toddler and I was wondering if there are errors in the pattern. The inseam was teeny (like 1 inch!) it looked a bit odd. The length of the elastic called for also didn’t match with the waistband circumference so I ended up cutting the elastic shorter.
Would you consider re-looking at the 2 yr old version?
Thanks!
Hello,
Thanks for reaching out to us. I can confirm that the short inseam of these shorts is a design feature. The smallest size included in the City Gym Shorts has a 1″ inseam and a 19″ waist, but you can absolutely lengthen the inseam by adding an inch to the bottom of each panel. The elastic can also be shortened to fit a smaller waist size!
Please let us know if you have any further questions!
All the best,
Carly
I did this pattern at largest size using some old bed sheets. I had to double layer the fabric since it was so thin but had no bulky problems. This pattern works very well, all parts fitting well., instructions are very clear. Id judge this as 102- beginner difficulty. This pattern is not for thick thighs or round butts. Im a reg size 16 and could barely squeeze into these shorts despite being well within the size range. If youre round, size up. If youre above a size 14, Id look elsewhere.
Thank you for sharing your findings, Rux, and we hope you enjoy your shorts!
All the best,
Margaret
Merci beaucoup pour ce partage, je cherchais ce type de patron depuis un moment. Bravo pour ce tutoriel et les patrons.
A wonderful pattern and instructions with photos! This is a gem especially since it is free. I measured myself and made these shorts with the exact fabrics recommended. My waist measured just under 33″ so I made the smallest size. I used all the recommended seam allowances. Sadly, I can *just* wiggle into these shorts but they are uncomfortable and look too small. I will need to do what another commenter said and find a teen girl to give them away to. I greatly appreciate the time and effort it takes to provide a free pattern, though it seems like such a waste to make these beautiful shorts and not be able to wear them.
Hi Katie,
Thanks for reaching out, although I’m so sorry that your shorts came out too small! I noticed that you said you measured your waist to determine which size to make. However, our adult sizes are actually based on hip circumference, not waist circumference. If you give this pattern another try, I’d recommend choosing your size based on your hip circumference instead!
All the best,
Lili
Thank you for the pattern! Is ease built into the pattern templates?
Hi Nini,
Thanks for reaching out. The finished shorts will include about one inch of ease over the larger hip size listed – for instance, for the 33-34 size, the finished measurement will be 35 inches. You can determine the exact finished measurement for each size by checking the length of the Waistband piece and subtracting a 5/8″ seam allowance. And if you’d like more positive ease, I’d recommend sewing the next size up!
All the best,
Lili
Hi,
I’m obviously being daft but I just cannot find the actual pattern pieces to print off. When I download the pattern, I just get the instructions, not the templates. Can you help? Thanks,
Laura
Hi Laura,
Thanks for reaching out! You can find the templates under the MATERIALS section on this page. For quick reference, though, you can also access them at the links below:

I hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
Thank you so much !
Just made these for my daughter in a sunflower pattern. She loves them
My hips fit the 33-34 measurement, but does it matter that if I measure around my thighs, it is more like 35? Should I size up? Don’t want them too baggy, but also want to be able to get them on 🙂
Hi Lindsay,
Thanks for reaching out! The actual finished circumference of the waistband is larger than the measurements given in the size ranges to account for this. So you should be fine with the size you’re planning to make!
All the best,
Lili
Thank you!
🤍 thankyou
Could you possibly add the width of the fabrics used in the sample? I tried checking the linked listing for the Liberty print fabric, but it doesn’t include a width I could find.
Having widths as well as the estimated yardage needed will help for people substituting other fabrics or trying to work from stash materials.
Hi Casey,
Thank you for writing in! The width of this fabric is 51-53″! You can find this information underneath the description in the ‘Product Details’ if on mobile and to the bottom right of the listing if on desktop. I hope this helps but please let us know if you have any other questions!
Happy making,
Gavriella
