Would love to see something done in crochet in this yarn… looks like lovely yarn!
I really want to make this…
This is just what I've been looking for! If I wanted to make this for my 6yr old, how should I decide what the circumference measurement should be, instead of the 18"?
Gorgious!
Hi Millie-
We think 16" in circumference should do the trick. Cast on 136sts and work the pattern the same.
Thank you!
Molly
Love this pattern! Is the gauge correct, 8.5 stitches per inch?
I am so happy I found this post! I am in love and half way done!
This is another stunningly beautiful project….simple, classic and I can't wait to make several! Love the colors of your new worsted yarn!
Julie
Hi Annhb-
Yes, the gauge is correct but please note that the gauge is in the rib pattern unstretched.
Thank you!
Molly

just letting you know the links to the pattern are still broken.
Hi this_pea!
Thank you so much for writing in!
We are still working out some kinks with our new site and really appreciate your help! I do apologize for any frustration. Here’s the link to the original Lovely Ribbed Cowl… https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2012/11/01/lovely-ribbed-cowl/
Thanks.

I am knitting this in Rowan tweed at the moment and think my son would love it, my question is this, should I knit it the suggested length or make it shorter for a man? I’m thinking not as much length but I’m a new knitter and need help! Hope my question is not dumb. I just think a man cowl would have less drape and length? Please let me know!! Thanks.
Hello Laura!
I think you’re spot on and definitely not dumb! Usually more feminine designs are slouchier and therefore taller in dimension. This design is more of a classic stitch pattern and so I believe that it would be great about 12″ tall instead of 16″. Give it a shot! Hope he loves it! -Alyson
Hi there!
For some reason, when I click on the link for the pattern, it says it can no longer be found.
Is there an updated link you could provide?
Thank you!!
Hello Heather!
Thank you for your patience with our new site! Here’s the link: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2013/09/03/lovely-ribbed-cowl-in-worsted-twist/
Happy knitting! -Alyson
I want to do a toddler/young child version of this. About how many should I cast on using this same yarn?
Hello, Mandie!
Thank you for writing in! For a toddler/young child I think a 12″ circumference would work, so you’d cast on 102 stitches and follow the pattern as written. If you want it shorter, just stop when you’ve reached your desired length and using the larger needle, bind off loosley in the rib pattern.
If you’ve further questions please let us know!
Best,
Kumeko
Hi – is a height of 16″ correct for this pattern? I’m at 10″ and it looks plenty tall enough. I’ve compared it to store bought cowls I have and most run around 11″. I’m using Purl Solo merino wool. Thanks.
Hi Olivia,
Thanks for writing in! The measurement of 16″ is correct! We think that the height allows for a nice slouch and look when worn and allows you to pull the cowl up around your ears to keep super warm is cold weather. If you would like, you can certainly make it shorter! The great thing about crafting is we are the boss of our own process! We can make things to our liking creating unique and lovely finished items! If the length at present works for you, go for it!
Best,
Cassy
Could I make this with your cashmere merino bloom ?
New Knitter.
Thanks
Hello Bella,
Thank you for reaching out! Cashmere Merino Bloom knits up at a smaller gauge than Worsted twist so you would need to do a bit a adjusting. I would recommend going down to US 5 and US6 to get a good tension and then go up in your cast on number. To figure out your cast on number you will just need to knit up a small gauge swatch which will give you your stitches per inch. Once you know how many stitches per inch you are getting you can multiply this number by 18 (the circumference of your cowl). You will just need to be sure that you are casting on an even number.
I hope this helps and happy knitting!

Thank you for the email with a cowl collection. I cannot seem to make the link for the “Lovely Ribbed Cowl in Worsted Twist” function. I’ve tried clicking on the links above and I keep getting the lovely pictures but not the pattern. Can you please help?! Thank you!
Hello Judy,
Thank you for reaching out! You can find the pattern here; . This should also be linked linked to under the photo of the worsted twist photo.
I hope this helps and happy knitting!

Could this be worked in Cashmere tend? If not can you recommend a more “masculine” cowl that I can work in that lovely warm yarn?
Hi and thanks for reaching out! Yes, Cashmere Tend would be a wonderful yarn for this pattern! You will need four skeins to knit the cowl.
Happy knitting!
Julianna
Hi!
I just knit one up for myself and love it!!
I have some chunky yarn and would like to make one for my 8 year old granddaughter.
I see you have recommended casting on 136 sts and a 12” length.
Can you recommend a needle size and cast on # please?
Thanks!!
Hi Simone,
Thanks for reaching out! I would recommend working a gauge swatch with the stitch pattern in an appropriate size needle (whatever they recommended with the bulkier yarn) and then comparing that to the original gauge to calculate your cast on! Our All About Gauge tutorial is an excellent resource to use!
I hope this helps and please feel free to reach out with any more questions going forward!
All the best,
Gianna
