Continue ShoppingMoonvine Shawl
Designed by Ksenia Naidyon, the Moonvine Shawl pattern is dotted with bobbles nestled among tendrils of lace, like a night-blooming vine ready to open its fragrant flowers to the stars. Knitting with two strands of our 100% cashmere Nigh Fine yarn makes a petal-soft fabric—airy and ephemeral, yet with the lasting beauty of a fine heirloom.

You knit this shawl from end to end, with increases and decreases worked along one side to shape a graceful, elongated triangle. The lace may look intricate, with its leafy shapes and trailing vines, but it’s built from a handful of simple stitches, with a pleasing rhythm that carries you along. A satisfying one-row bobble technique forms the dimensional little buds, which you can make with knitting needles or with a crochet hook, as Ksenia suggests. And with the option to follow either charts or fully written instructions throughout, you can settle into whichever method feels most natural.

A delicate tassel bursts from each tip like the first flowers to open, adding a little weight to the ends and helping your shawl stay in place.

Ksenia designed the Moonvine Shawl to make the exquisite beauty of Nigh Fine truly come alive. This slender fingering-weight yarn is made with the finest 100% Mongolian cashmere available, gossamer light with a glowing halo. Holding this 2-ply yarn double creates remarkable stitch definition, revealing each detail as if bathed in the light of a full moon.

Pick from Nigh Fine’s timeless palette, including classic Heirloom White and other colors that capture the pale glow and shadowy depths of a moonlit garden… Just two skeins make a glorious Moonvine Shawl!

GAUGE
27 stitches and 40 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch with yarn held double (see Notes)
28 stitches and 38 rows = 4 inches in pattern stitch with yarn held double
SIZE
Finished Dimensions: approximately 11¾ inches at widest point x 72 inches long, not including Tassels
NOTES
YARN DOUBLED
You will hold two strands of yarn together throughout. We recommend winding your skeins into balls and pulling a strand from the outside of each one.
SLIP STITCHES
Slip all stitches purlwise with yarn in back (wyib).
MAKE 1 FORWARD LOOP (m1F)

Create a loop so that working end of yarn lies over tail end, and insert right needle into loop from back to front. Pull yarn to tighten loop on right needle, creating a new stitch. [1 stitch increased]
ONE-ROW BOBBLE (B)
One-Row Bobble: ([K1, yarn over] 3 times, k1) into next stitch, slip 7 stitches back to left needle, knit 7 together through the back loops.
If you are more comfortable using a crochet hook, here’s an easier way to make a One-Row Bobble…
Insert crochet hook into next stitch and [pull up a loop, yarn over] 3 times, then pull up one more loop so there are seven loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw yarn though all seven loops. Chain 1. Insert hook from back to front into stitch at base of bobble, yarn over, and pull through both loops, dropping stitch off left needle. Transfer final loop from crochet hook to right needle.
Ksenia has made an amazing video of how to work the crochet version of this technique (which she calls an Anchored Nupp). Follow along at https://www.instagram.com/p/CMXavnRHH66/!

FINISHING
WEAVE IN ENDS + BLOCK
Weave in the ends, and gently wet block to finished dimensions.
MAKE TASSELS
NOTE: To ensure you have enough yarn to make Tassels the same size, wind your yarn into two equal balls first, weighing them to make sure they are the same. Use one ball for each Tassel!
Using a piece of cardboard that is 3 inches long by at least 4 inches wide, hold yarn double and wrap it 80 times the long way around the cardboard, or fewer times if desired. Visit our Tassel Tutorial to finish. Make an identical second Tassel and use the tails to attach each Tassel to the cast-on points of each Triangle.
Gently steam Tassels and enjoy your wrap!

Very pretty.
I love this pattern but would like to knit a deeper , wider shawl so it was more of a wrap than a scarf … any suggestions?
Hi Allison!
Thanks so much for writing in with your question! I’m so glad the Moonvine Shawl caught your eye!
Sadly, its a bit beyond the resources I have available to modify this pattern in that way. I’ll be sure to pass your thoughts along to our team, though… thank you so much for sharing them! If you do choose to modify the pattern, we would love to see the result.
Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!
Happy knitting!

Love the shape of this but can’t imagine doing the moonshine pattern. How, and with which yarn would you do a basic stitch keeping the knots and tassels?
Hi Cris!
Thanks so much for writing in with your question! I’m so glad the Moonvine Shawl grabbed your attention!
I’m not sure I fully understand your question… Please feel free to correct my understanding! Do you mean to say you’d like to knit a shawl in stockinette but keep the tassels and bobbles? Sadly, modifying the pattern in this way is a bit beyond the scope of my resources.
The bobbles are made following the “one-row bobble (B)” instructions under “notes.” The tassels are listed at the end of the pattern under “finishing.” For this pattern, we used Nigh Fine. You could substitute a lace-weight to fingering-weight of your choice, if you prefer! I’d suggest Line Weight or Quartz as an alternative.
I hope this helps! Please feel free to write in with any other questions you might have!
Happy knitting!

So beautiful! I am a novice knitter and I’m not sure I’m up to the commitment to Cashmere. Of the suggested substitutions, would Quartz or Line Weight be the better alternative? Also, if I use the alternative yarn, would I still use 2 strands together?
Hi Sue!
Thanks so much for writing in with your question! I’m so glad the Moonvine Shawl caught your eye! And welcome to the craft, we’re so happy you’re here!
These are both great substitution options, I would probably go for Quartz myself as it offers a slight alpaca halo, similar to the cashmere. But both would be great! You will need to hold the yarn held double regardless of the yarn chosen, yes. Great question! I would always recommend knitting (and blocking) a gauge swatch to check you’re achieving gauge and that you like the look and feel of the resulting fabric.
I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!
Happy knitting!

Thank you so much!
Wow! This is lovely. This is definitely going on my to do😃
Hi there! I’m wanting to make this gorgeous scarf using Quartz instead of Nigh Fine, but it looks like 2 skeins will come up about 75-80 yards short. Really? Is the estimate of yardage generous, or do I really need to buy 3 skeins of Quartz to make it? Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Hi Denise!
Thanks so much for reaching out with your question. I’m so glad the Moonvine Shawl caught your attention!
There are 420 yards in a skein of Quartz and 448 yards in Nigh Fine. You’re right! You would come up about 80 yards short.
I would suggest picking up 3 skeins just to be safe. I’d recommend waiting to wind the last skein…we’d be happy to accept a return on that last skein if you end up not needing it. You can send us an email at [email protected] and we’d be happy to help out with that!
I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!

Could I use a light worsted in lieu of holding 2 fingering weight yarns together? Do you think it would drape well? Thank you.
Hello Joan,
Thank you so much for reaching out! I’m so glad the Moonvine Shawl piqued your interest, and I’m happy to help!
If you would like to use a light worsted/ dk-weight yarn rather than two fingering weight yarns held together, I would suggest picking a light worsted with cashmere to maintain the lovely drape you’re after. Please note, the two fingering weight cashmere strands held together also provides a little more elasticity to the yarn. For a light worsted or DK cashmere, I would suggest Nigh Dk or Cashmere Merino Bloom.
I would always recommend knitting (and washing/blocking) a gauge swatch to see if you achieve gauge and like the look and feel of the finished fabric.
I hope that helps! Please feel free to reach out with any other questions you might have!
Happy knitting!
