Tassel
Our elegant Grecian Rib Scarf is finished with beautiful and surprisingly easy-to-make tassels that help to make it even more special. Follow along with our tutorial below and learn how to make a tassel yourself!
Wrap yarn around a piece of cardboard that is 1/2 inch longer than the desired finished length of your tassel.
(This piece of cardboard is approximately 6 inches tall resulting in a 5 1/2-inch tassel. I wrapped the yarn around approximately 40 times.)
Cut yarn.
Cut a 15-inch length of yarn and thread it on to a tapestry needle. Bring the needle under the wraps of yarn at the top of the cardboard. Remove the tapestry needle and tie a tight knot around the wraps of yarn. (Later you can use these tails to attach the tassel.)
At the opposite end of the cardboard, carefully slide the blade of a scissor between the wrapped yarn and the cardboard. Cut the wrapped yarn, freeing it from the cardboard.
Cut another 15-inch length of yarn. Lay it horizontally on a flat surface. Lay the tassel on top of the 15-inch strand so that the strand is approximately 3/4 of an inch from the top of the tassel. Tie a tight knot around the loose strands. Wrap the tails of the 15-inch strand around the cinched tassel a few times to cover the knot. To secure the tails, using a tapestry needle or crochet hook, bring them under the cinching strand from the top and down the center of the tassel to join the other strands of the tassel.
Gently shake out the tassel and trim the ends so they are even.
Use the tails at the top to attach the tassel.

How exactly do I attach the tassels to a project? I have a finished scarf that I want to add tassels onto (each end) and I’m not entirely sure how to use the ties.
Hi Alex,
Great question! To attach the tassel, you will thread one of the tails from the top tie through the corner of your scarf, and then knot the two top tails together securely. You can then weave the two ends in to hide them.
Best,
Julianna
I’m finishing a scarf. It does not call for tassels or fringe, but I think I’m going to add some. How long should the fringe be? Thoughts on how I can decide? It is a relatively long scarf. I have plenty of yarn 👍
Hi Erica,
Thanks for reaching out! Scarf fringe usually measures about six or seven inches long, but since you have lots of yarn to play with, I would probaby make it eight or nine inches long, and then trim it to the length you like after you see how it looks on the finished scarf!
I hope that helps!
Julianna
Julianna, thank you! I finished the scarf, using 6” (ish) for fringe. Perfect! Thank you!
