Pannier Wrap
Our Pannier Wrap knitting pattern is just the thing to put a swing in your step, with its lovely basket-y texture and twisted fringe, all in naturally beautiful Cotton Pure yarn!
This distinctive stitch pattern is super simple to knit: every other row is knit 1, purl 1, and all the other rows are p1, slip 1 with yarn in front, which is so easy it amounts to a “rest row”!
The finished look is like a woven pannier, the kind you might attach to your handlebars and fill with baguettes on your daily ride from the boulangerie… Yes, we’re dreaming here! But even if you’re not living a French countryside fantasy, your Pannier Wrap will surely have an elegant drape and beautiful fluidity!
The contrasting color and twisted fringe at each end ground the design and give you the opportunity for some color play. Creating the fringe is super enjoyable, and we have a new video tutorial to walk you through each step!
Our 100% organically grown Cotton Pure is just right for a summer wrap, a sport-weight yarn that is wonderfully soft and supple to knit and refreshingly light and cool to wear. And for a textured stitch pattern like this, its multi-strand structure really makes the stitches pop!
With 30+ colors of Cotton Pure to choose from, you can make your Pannier Wrap fit it into any daydream. For us, we’ll be reaching for it every time we wish we were biking along the Seine!
If you love the yarn used in this project, you’ll love all of our other yarn, too! Explore our 35+ lovingly created yarn collections, in nearly every natural fiber and spectacular color you can imagine… Only available here at Purl Soho’s online yarn shop!

If I would like to make a narrower wrap, around half as wide would I need half as many MC skeins?
Hi Rena,
That is exactly right! For a project that is half the size, you will need only half the yarn!
All the best,
Gavriella
Prom previous projects I have several skeins of Cotton Pure) left and am casting on . Such a pretty pattern.
I have been an avid knitter for 60 plus years, but still looking to learn more. So, when I bought the latest Vogue knitting Ultimate Stitch Dictionary, I see Purl Soho made another cover. Congrats!!
You do carry absolutely fabulous yarn, and 95% of my tops and sweaters have been knitted with your yarns. Even Spud, the dog owns a cable sweater knitted with Understory.
All the best,
Barbara

Hello! I would like to make this the same width but only about 60″ (vs the 72″). How many skeins of the main color do you think I would need? thank you!
Hi Alma,
You could definitely get one less skein of the main color for a bit of a shorter wrap!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
One more question: I have 5 skeins of Buttercup Cotton – could this be used for this wrap? thanks again!
Hi Alma,
So sorry I didn’t see both comments at once but I’m afraid Buttercup Cotton is a bit too thing for this project. You could definitely use it for a more airy wrap though! Alternatively you could alter your gauge for the wrap by adjusting your cast on. To do this you will want to knit a gauge swatch, measure your stitches per inch, and then multiply that number by your desired width. To ensure the right number of columns for twisted fringe, this pattern is worked over a multiple of 4 stitches + 3. If you’re not working the twisted fringe, any odd number of stitches will do!
All the best,
Gavriella
