Amelia Putri For Purl Soho: Double Diamond Socks
Don’t let the name “Double Diamond” scare you. We’re not talking about skiing here! In this case, double diamonds are the design motif all over these twinkly socks, which, by the way, would be pretty cozy after a day battling the slopes.
These wonderfully complex, but not expert, socks were created by Indonesian designer, Amelia Putri, and her inspiration was far from snowy mountains. Really, she was thinking about twinkly diamonds for dancing feet and the beauty of our hand-dyed Posy.
A self-taught knitter, Amelia manages to pack some pretty thrilling techniques into her Double Diamond Socks. Toe-up in construction, you’ll get to use the Magic Loop method, an easy way to sidestep double pointed needles, as well as follow along with simple knitting charts and work German Short Rows to shape the heels.
If you’re looking around for an intermediate blue trail about now, remember that trying new knitting techniques is a lot less risky than barreling down an expert mogul run… and we have tutorials that safely walk you through every step!
Aside from the clever design and stunning colorwork, the Double Diamond Socks’ beauty lies in our hand-dyed Posy. A mix of superwash merino, cashmere, and nylon, Posy is incredibly soft, machine wash- and dry-able, and very lovely, just right for sock making, from beginner to expert and everything in between!

Hello,
I dislike magic loop but love dpn’s- is it possible to just use dpn’s for this pattern, the way it’s written? I’d say I’m an intermediate-beginner at this point, and don’t feel confident adapting patterns myself.
Thanks!
Hi Heather,
Thanks for reaching out! You can certainly use DPNs for this pattern, all that you will need to adjust is the breakdown of the stitches on the needles. Instead of having them split half and half like you would with magic loop you will have to break them up onto 3 or 4 needles, whatever you are comfortable with! If you have any questions or comments along the way please feel free to reach out again here, or you can email our customer service team directly at customerservice@purlsoho.com they can help you one-on-one from there!
Warmly,
Gianna
I am still learning how to read charts correctly so I am confused with the instructions. What does Needle 1 and Needle 2 mean when working this pattern ?
Thanks so much for your great website !
Hi Kiersten,
Thanks for reaching out! Since this pattern uses Magic Loop as its method of working in the round instead of double-pointed needles, you will be working with 2 needles only instead of 3 or 4! For more information about this, I would suggest checking out our wonderful Magic Loop tutorial and also one of our newer tutorials Reading A Chart!
I hope this helps and clears things up!
Gianna
I have the pattern, and can change to douple pointed needles, but I don’t really like toe up. Did I read someplace I can get the pattern cuff down? I purchased the pattern and enough yarn to make 3 or 4 pairs of socks, and have the balls ready to go, but just can’t get started.
Hi Vickid,
Thanks for reaching out. While we have not made a version of this pattern that’s knit from the cuff down, I think that’s a great idea! Let us know if you end up knitting them that way. We’d love to see how they turn out!
All the best,
Lili
