Our Flower Farm Wrap seeks to channel the glorious beauty of rows upon rows of blossoms bobbing in the breeze.

Flower Farm Wrap | Purl Soho

To tap into the ease of fields of flowers, we used reverse stockinette with its little dashed lines at each color change. In addition, some stripes are just one row of contrast color and some are two rows of two colors, these subtle differences adding to the impression of controlled chaos.

Tassels at the end of each stripe lend a free spirit, and for a feeling of abundance, we knit a giant square that you fold it in half along the diagonal then swaddle around you in a gorgeous field of fabric.

All this beauty is easy to achieve with our Cattail Silk. One hundred percent silk, it is spun and dyed in Japan and has a soft shine, a wonderfully earthy texture, and a casual spin speckled by little nubs of color. Its off-handed elegance is the essence of a flower farm!

Note

Carry Contrast Colors Up Selvage

When working right-side rows with the Main Color: Hold the contrast color in front of the Main Color as you knit the first stitch of the row, catching the contrast color into the selvage edge and carrying it tidily up the side.

When working wrong-side rows with the Main Color: Slip the first 3 stitches with the contrast color in front and then bring it to the back in order to knit the fourth stitch, trapping the contrast color in the selvage.

Pattern

Rolled Edge

With Color A, cast on 306 stitches. We used a basic Long Tail Cast On. (A good tip when you’re casting on so many stitches is to place a stitch marker or some scrap yarn every 50 stitches so you don’t have to recount all the stitches every time you lose count! Be sure to remove the markers as you work the first row.)

Row 1 (wrong side): Slip 3 with yarn in front (wyif), purl to last 3 stitches, slip 3 wyif.

Row 2 (right side): Knit to end of row.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 one more time.

One-Color Stripes

Row 1 (wrong side): With Color A, slip 3 wyif, knit to last 3 stitches, slip 3 wyif.

Row 2 (right side): With Main Color (MC) and carrying Color A up selvage (see Note), k3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.

Row 3: With MC, slip 3 wyif, knit to last 3 stitches, slip 3 wyif.

Rows 4-9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 three more times.

Row 10: With Color A, k3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.

Repeat Rows 1-10 eight more times.

Two-Color Stripes

Join Color B.

Row 1 (wrong side): With Color B, slip 3 wyif, knit to last 3 stitches, slip 3 wyif.

Row 2 (right side): With MC and carrying Color B up selvage, k3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.

Row 3: With MC and carrying Color A up selvage, slip 3 wyif, knit to last 3 stitches, slip 3 wyif.

Rows 4-9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 three more times.

Row 10: With Color B, k3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.

Row 11: With Color A, slip 3 wyif, knit to last 3 stitches, slip 3 wyif.

Row 12: With MC and carrying Color A up selvage, k3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.

Row 13: With MC and carrying Color B up selvage, slip 3 wyif, knit to last 3 stitches, slip 3 wyif.

Row 14-19: Repeat Rows 12 and 13 three more times.

Row 20: With Color A, k3, purl to last 3 stitches, k3.

Repeat Rows 1-20 one more time, then repeat Rows 1-10 one more time.

Cut Color A.

Continue

Using Color B instead of Color A, repeat Rows 1-10 of One-Color Stripes 24 times.

Join Color C.

Using Color B as Color A, and Color C as Color B, repeat Rows 1-20 of Two-Color Stripes 2 times, then repeat Rows 1-10 one more time.

Cut Color B.

Using Color C instead of Color A, repeat Rows 1-10 of One-Color Stripes 9 times.

Cut MC.

Rolled Edge

Row 1: With Color C, slip 3 wyif, purl to last 3 stitches, slip 3 wyif.

Row 2: Knit to end of row.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 one more time, then repeat Row 1 one more time.

With the right side facing you, bind off loosely knitwise.

Weave in the ends and gently wet block.

Make Tassels

Using the legs of our Small size Pom Pom Maker, make a 2 inch long tassel by wrapping the yarn 15 times and following our Tassel Tutorial. Make twenty-two tassels with each Color A and Color C and 60 tassels with Color B.

Attach Tassels

With the knit side facing you, use duplicate stitch and the tassels’ tails to attach a tassel to both ends of each One-Color Stripe. Use the same color tassel as stripe.  You will have four tassels remaining of Color A and Color C and twelve tassels remaining of Color B.

For the Two-Color Stripes, attach the tassels in the same way, alternating between the two colors that make up the stripes. For example, for the five Color A and B stripes, attach a Color B tassel, then a Color A one, then B, then A, then B.

Weave in the remaining ends.
