Repeat Row 1 until piece measures 7 inches from cast-on edge.
Cut Yarn A.
Join Yarn B and repeat Row 1 until you have used all 3 skeins of Yarn B or until piece measures approximately 62 inches from cast-on edge.
Cut Yarn B, if necessary.
Join Yarn A and repeat Row 1 for nearly 7 inches.

Weave in all ends and lightly spray block, if desired. Do not steam block, as heat will singe the Angelina sparkle fibers.

This is so cute and fun! Do you think that Gentle giant in Nighttime Blue with Comet in Deep Space would be a good combination? (Love the blue colorway but I’m a darker/jeweled tones girl, haha!)
Hi Jeni,
Thanks for reaching out and for your kind words! I think that combination would be absolutely lovely for this scarf!
Please let us know how this turns out!
Happy knitting!
Gianna
What a great, quick pattern – speaking as someone who likes seed stitch but gets tired of knitting it! I’m wondering about making it using Comet in Deep Space and Gentle Giant in Nighttime Blue (possibly the wrong blue?) or Purple Petunia, or even Mallard Green. What do you think?
Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for reaching out! Deep Space Comet and Nighttime Blue would be a perfect match! Purple Petunia and Mallard Green would also be super fun for a contrasting color!
Please let us know how this turns out, happy knitting!
Gianna
Do you think it would be ok using a 17mm needle so it wouldn’t be as bulky looking?
Hi Adria,
Thanks for writing in! Do you mean a US 17 Needle? A 17mm needle would be a bit larger and would result in a still bulky but more open knit texture. For this pattern we recommend a US 19 needle (15mm) needle since this yarn is categorized as a “Super Bulky” weight.
I hope this helps, happy knitting!

I am having a problem with the gentle giant twisting badly as I knit, making it very difficult to keep the yarn full and fluffy. I don’t normally have a problem with yarn twisting and it’s been very frustrating. Can you please tell me how to solve this problem. The comet is not a problem. Thank you!
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for reaching out! I am sorry to hear that, I know that twisting can be very frustrating… Unfortunately this is somewhat common with single ply yarn and it can come down to how the yarn was wound into a ball from the skein. It can be kind of annoying but the best way to is to stop knitting once it becomes very twisted and rotate the ball until it unwinds before you continue!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!

I love my scarf. Only problem is there was not enough Knitcollage yarn . I followed the directions and cast on 15 stitches of yarn A and knitted 7 inches. Then knitted the 3 skeins of Gentle Giant . Next I joined yarn A and only had enough Comet in Super Pink to knit 3 1/2 inches. So 😥 sad. I knew the second end was going to be “nearly 7 inches”, I don’t think 31/2 or even 4 inches is nearly 7 inches.
Hi Jackie,
Thanks for reaching out! I am sorry to hear that you have run out of yarn! If you email our team at customerservice@purlsoho.com we can help you further from there!
All the best,
Gianna
I do appreciate you sharing this. For anyone who is concerned with this-I ended up laying the yarn out in approximate one yard measures to end up with two equal balls of the comet which provided each end to be roughly equal- happy I did it that way and others might want to do the same.
I already have some Comet in Milky Way and would like to add Gentle Giant to make this scarf. I am looking at Mint Ice, Pigeon Gray, and Elephant Gray. Would any of these colors work?
Hi Senta,
Thanks for writing in! All three of those options would be very interesting with Comet in Milky Way! I think they would all work together very well, I am leaning towards Gentle Giant in Mint Ice, I think that would be a beautiful contrast! Both of the gray shades would also look lovely, I would go with pigeon gray in that case!
I hope this helps and please let us know which you end up going with!
Warmly,
Gianna
Hi Gianna,
Thank you for the help! I went with the Mint Ice as you recommended – I think it will pick up the color of the greenish iridescent tinsel that is in Milky Way.
Best,
Senta
Hi Senta,
That is wonderful! I agree, I think it will be a really great combo with Milky Way! I can’t wait to hear how this turns out!
Warmly,
Gianna
What color besides “Elephant Gray” would work with the “Comet”? Would the “Pigeon Gray” be too light?
Hi Anne,
Thanks for reaching out! Which color of Comet were you interested in? That way I can better help you select a corresponding Gray in Gentle Giant!
Warmly,
Gianna
Whoops. Was thinking of Starship, but might also be interested in meteor shower.
Hi Anne,
Thanks for your response! With Starship Elephant Gray will be the closest match but I think that Pigeon Gray would also look great with it! With Meteor Shower I would recommend Pigeon Gray or even Silver Mauve!
Warmly,
Gianna
Gianna,
Thanks. Silver Mauve is not a good color for me. Any thoughts about which Comet might do well with Heirloom White? And is there any ETA on the Elephant Gray?
Hi Anne,
Thanks for reaching out! With Heirloom White I would recommend Milky Way, Stardust or Cosmic Rays! Although I don’t have a firm estimate on when we will have Elephant Gray back, I anticipate it will be mid-spring! The best way to be notified is to add in your email on the Gentle Giant project page and we will notify you as soon as it is available!
Warmly,
Gianna
I’m using cosmic rays with heirloom white and the colors are fabulous; however, the gentle giant wool turns out to be quite a bit narrower than the comet. I’m using US19 needles. Should I go bigger when I change to the gentle giant yarn? Please help.
Hi Dr. Lynn,
Thanks for reaching out! Gentle Giant is a bit of a thinner yarn compared to Comet so it is completely normal for it to knit up a bit different! Did you check your gauge prior to beginning the scarf? If not I would measure that now and see how the Gentle Giant compares to the gauge and you can asses if you need to adjust your needle size from there!
I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions!
Warmly,
Gianna
Love this! How does the scarf look if I shorten the cast-on to 11 or 13 stitches? I’d like it to be a little narrower, but not sure given the bulkiness of the yarn how it lies.
Hi Sharon,
Thanks for reaching out! I think you can certainly narrow the scarf to 11 or 13 inches, I would suggest testing out a little swatch with that stitch count to see how you like the overall width before going forward with the whole scarf!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!

Hello,
I want to make a blanket with this combination of yarn . Could you please recommend a knitting pattern using the same yarn ? I think the Good wool blanket pattern might work .
I don’t know how many skeins of comet and gentle giant I would need .
My 8 year old niece would love this combination for a blanket.
Hi Mrs. Owens,
Thanks for reaching out. I think that making a blanket with these yarns is a wonderful idea! Since the pattern is just seed stitch, you can easily adapt it to be a blanket without even using a pattern. All you’ll need to do is adjust the cast-on number, so that you can knit it in blanket proportions! To figure out your cast-on number, you will want to first knit a gauge swatch in pattern (if you need help with this step, please visit our tutorial, All About Gauge). Once you know how many stitches you are getting per inch, you can multiply that number by the width that you would like and cast on the nearest odd number.
As for how many skeins you’ll need, that really depends on the dimensions you want the blanket to be! Let me know what your idea is for that, and then I can give an estimate of how much yarn you should get.
All the best,
Lili
Hi! Can you do this as a cowl?
Hi Jen,
Thanks for reaching out! We don’t have instructions for a cowl in this pattern, but we do have a cowl pattern in Comet! You can find that pattern here: Kaleidoscope Cowl
Happy knitting!
Gianna
Can I knit this scarf with regular straight needles. A little shy to take on the circular needle. What would I change? How many to caste on and how long do I do it before changing to contrast colour. Thanks for your patience with me.
Regards, Val
Hi Val,
Thanks for reaching out. You can absolutely knit this scarf on straight needles! You wouldn’t need to change anything about the pattern to do so. Hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
I love the look. Any suggestions for making similar scarf in less bulky yarn? Thanks.
Hi Jayne,
Thanks for writing in. I think you could get a similar effect using the yarns Worsted Twist and Manos del Uruguay’s Serpentina! These yarns are both worsted weight, so the scarf will definitely turn out less bulky. Hope this gives you inspiration!
All the best,
Lili
Hi,
I love these yarns and want to make a scarf for my granddaughter. I think super bulky would be overwhelming. Do these yarns come in a less bulky weight? If not, can you recommend something with the same allure that is perhaps worsted weight? My granddaughter loves turquoise and light purple or violet. Thanks.
Hi Fran,
Thanks for writing in. I think you could get a similar effect using the yarns Worsted Twist and Manos del Uruguay’s Serpentina! Both of these are worsted weight yarns. Hope this gives you inspiration!
All the best,
Lili
Thank you for your response. I particularly like the sparkle of comet. Is there anyway to use Comet with Worsted Twist?
Hi Fran,
Thanks for your response! Since Worsted Twist is significantly thinner than Comet I do not think it would be the best pair. If you would like something a bit thinner than Gentle Giant, but thick enough to work with Comet, I would recommend using one of our lovely yarns Lovebird or Super Soft Merino!
I hope this helps!
Gianna
Hi,
Love all your scarves and just started this one as a gift for my daughter-in-law. Gentle Giant Elephant Gray with Comet Starship border. I fear the “Angelina Sparkle” metallic of Comet Starship sheds a little too much although it is fun.
Please suggest an alternative for the borders.
My granddaughter will love using the skein of Comet Starship.
Thank you, Gale
Hi Gale,
Thanks for reaching out! This is definitely a normal part of Comet since it is a loosely hand-spun yarn! It should shed less when it is knit up, the Angelina sparkles will be more secured in the fibers.
Alternatively, and to keep consistent with the gauge, you could use more Gentle Giant in a contrasting color for the edges, or Woolly Wool!
Warmly,
Gianna
Hi,
I ordered this yarn to make the scarf however there is not enough of the Comet yarn to finish the end of the scarve. I followed the directions where there is 7 inches of the Comet in the beginning but I was only able to knit 4 inches at the end so I ran out of the Comet yarn to complete the remaining 3 inches. Please advise.
Thanks
Hi Donna,
Thanks for reaching out! Please send the above information to our customer service team at customerservice@purlsoho.com and they can help you directly from there!

I’ve always wanted to make this scarf, and with the sale going on, I want to jump on it today! Would the Purple Lupine in Gentle Giant work well with Comet in Meteor Shower? From the photos it looks like the Purple Lupine would pick up the purple tones in the Meteor Shower. If not, any other suggestions for the Gentle Giant?
I’d also be interested in what you think about the Red Violet in Gentle Giant.
Hi Ronda!
Thank you for your question! I think both colors of Gentle Giant would be beautiful with Meteor Shower for this scarf, however I have to say I think the Purple Lupine would look especially nice! Another color to consider would be Cowrie Pink, to help pick up some of the more peachy tones in Meteor Shower, or Silver Mauve, for a more similar tone to the main off-white color in Meteor Shower.
I hope this helps with your project planning, and happy yarn shopping!
All the best,
Margaret
Thanks! Purple Lupine it is!! (I’m a purple person, so I’m always drawn to anything purple!)
You are very welcome, Ronda! I’m a purple person too, and I think Purple Lupine will make for a beautiful scarf!
Happy knitting,
Margaret
Hi!
Love all your yarns and patterns, thanks for them. Could you let me know when Comet will be back in stock as I’d really like to make this scarf. Thanks so much.
Hi Joan,
Thanks for reaching out. I’m so sorry to say that we’re in the process of discontinuing Comet, so we won’t be restocking any of the colors! While we loved this yarn, not everybody else felt the same way, so we’ve had to make the sad decision to stop producing it. We hope you can understand!
Apologies for the disappointing news, but please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns. We do still have many skeins of Deep Space in stock though, so if that color catches your eye, then you would be able to order enough for the Edge of the Universe scarf!
All the best,
Lili
Hi! I’m almost done with my Edge of the Universe, and I’m thinking of making one for my daughter-in-law. I see that the Comet is only available in the dark blue. What colors of Gentle Giant would go well with that? She dislikes anything pink, so pink is out!
Hi Ronda,
We are thrilled to hear you are wrapping up your Edge Of The Universe Scarf and will be making another! I believe Periwinkle Blue or Purple Lupine would pair wonderfully with the dark blue hues of Comet! I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
