Basic Hats For Everyone In New Colors!
Thanks to a fresh new palette of Worsted Twist colors, our Basic Hats For Everyone are back in a whole new world of velvet blues and teacake pinks. Like a hydrangea forest, we love the vibe!
And no pattern is better suited for color play than our Basic Hats For Everyone. A real classic, it includes instructions for four different brims, plus sizes from baby to grandpa.
And one more choice: to pom pom or not to pom pom. Ours are so squishy cute it’s hard to say no. Worsted Twist adds fluffy softness, and our Pom Pom Maker Set churns out perfectly dense sweeties every time!
The perfect marriage of simplicity, flexibility, and fun, this is the kind of pattern we turn to at every gift-giving opportunity. In the old days, we’d say that it was our most dog-eared pattern, but now, let’s just say it has a special place on our desktop!

Hi Catherine,
Thanks for reaching out and for your kind words! That is a new shade of our Worsted Twist yarn called Blue Blue, it is such a beautifully stunning color! The pom poms on top are also made out of the Worsted Twist!
Best,
Gianna
I’d love to make this comfy hat for each of my grandchildren…and for myself. BUT all of us are a little sensitive to pure wool. Makes us itchy and red. Which of your yarns would I be able to use in place of worsted?
Hi Sheri,
Thanks for reaching out! We have a few options that are lovely alternatives to wool! I would recommend Jade Sapphire Zageo 6-ply Cashmere, our Cashmere Tend, and Blue Sky Worsted Cotton. If you do alright with wool blends I would also like to recommend our Linen Quill Worsted and Anzula For Better or Worsted ! Be sure to do a gauge swatch with whichever yarn you decide on to insure your gauge is consistent with the pattern!
Happy knitting!
Gianna
I want to knit a hat in cotton for a man that is allergic to wool. Should I do the brim in a needle that is one size down from the regular needle that is for the body of the hat. I am thinking the cotton might stretch and the brim should be tighter.
Hi Katherine,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes that is a great idea and should help keep the brim a bit tighter!
All the best,
Gianna
Thank You so much for the Basic Hats for Everyone pattern! I used the Garter Brim Hat with Ear Flaps pattern. I used a comparable yarn to make my first hat. Wow! What an easy-to-follow pattern! I’m now using the same pattern & Purl Soho’s Worsted Twist yarn to knit another ear flap hat. Can’t wait to see the results!
Hi Karen,
Thanks for writing in! I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying our hat patterns and yarn! Please let us know how the hat turns out in Worsted Twist!
Happy Knitting!

Hi!
I’d like some advice for choosing what size to make for a child- his head measures 21″ around.
I would like an idea of how much negative ease is ideal….
My first thought is to cast-on for the Adult Small size (90 stitches), but aim for the height for the child size by starting the decreases earlier.
But if it is meant to stretch a lot, maybe the Kid size would be fine.
Also, can the number of stitches be modified? Does it work for multiples of 2 or 4?
Thanks in advance for your recommendations.
Hi Natalie,
Thanks for writing in! It will depend on which style you choose to knit within this pattern, for example the rib cuff hat will have a bit more stretch than the garter brim or rolled brim hats! I think the best option would be to knit the adult small size and follow the height of the kid size! You can also adjust the cast on, the pattern works over multiples of 2.
All the best,
Gianna
Hi!
I am planning to knit the garter brim with ear flaps version for an almost one year old whose head measures about 17.5” in circumference. Do you think the Kid version will be too loose? I plan to adjust the height as indicated in the pattern (to knit the body until 2” less than desired height).
Also, is there a particular cast-on method you recommend?
Thanks!
Hi Jennifer,
That’s a great question! I’d definitely recommend making the Kid version, which will give them room to grow into. It may be loose at first, but it will fit them for a lot longer as they grow! We recommend using a long tail cast-on for this project. Hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
