These hats are lovely! I’m wondering if your cashmere merino bloom would be a possible substitute yarn, and if so, would the yardage and needle size needed be the same? I have several balls of that are left over from another project and would like to use them. Many thanks, Debby
Hi Debby,
That’s a great question! Cashmere Merino Bloom would be phenomenal for these hats! While it’s also a DK weight yarn like Nigh DK, it’s a bit thicker so you might need to adjust your needle size. We recommend doing a gauge swatch just to make sure your gauge matches up with the pattern and to see which needle size works best for your project. Here’s our guide on swatching if you’d like more information: All About Gauge! If you’re getting gauge, you’ll be able to go by the yardage recommendations listed in the pattern.
I hope this helps!
All the best,
Cat

Thank you for providing such a nice pattern. I have a question. I am planning to have a knitting party with 4 friends using this pattern. I am wondering how to share this pattern at that timeI would like to print the pattern on paper for four people, as this is the first time that all of them except me have used the English pattern. Is it possible for me to print for four people? Since English is not my native language, I thought I did not understand the terms of service correctly, so I sent in a question.
Hi Michiko,
Thanks so much for asking! You can definitely print out the pattern for your knitting party (that sounds super fun!). If any of your friends would like a free PDF of the pattern emailed to them, they can access that by entering their email address at the top of the pattern page (Basic Hats For Everyone in Nigh DK) and a copy of the pattern will be sent to them right away. Hope this helps, and wishing you all the happy knitting!
All the best,
Cat
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have solved my problem. I will enjoy knitting hats with my friends.

My boss is having his first baby in January 2024 & I need to knit my first hat in a week. Thanks so much for this pattern, it’s just what I wanted to knit for Boss Baby for the Australian winter when the baby boy (already known pre-birth) will be 3-6 months old. Thank you 🙂
Hi Tina,
Thank you so much for your kind comment! We’re so happy to hear that you’re a fan of this pattern and can’t wait for you to cast on!

Hello,
I started knitting the rolled brim hat in Season Alpaca, and I feel like it’d be nice to have a more “finished” look for the brim (which really rolls a lot in its current state…) without actually using ribs. Do you think I could do a hemmed brim instead without altering the pattern in any other ways?
Thank you!
Caroline
Hi Caroline,
What a great question! You absolutely can pick up stitches to add a brim! For this, we recommend checking out our Knit Hem tutorial but let us know if you have any other questions and we will be happy to help!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Looking forward to making some of these hats.
I’ve tried several times to enter my email to receive the hat pattern. I’ve never got it and I did check my spam folder. Could you help me. Thanks so much
Hi Cheryl,
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been having trouble accessing this pattern! I searched your email address in our records, and I’m seeing that you signed up successfully, received the email with the PDF download, and interacted with that email on December 12th. I’d recommend searching back in your inbox for the email with the subject line “Download Your Free Basic Hats For Everyone Pattern!” The pattern will be in there!
All the best,
Lili
I entered by email but did not receive the pattern. Is there another way to print it?
Hi Bonnie,
Hmmmm, I checked our systems, and I’m not seeing your email there for this pattern! Would you like me to sign you up from my end instead?
All the best,
Lili
Looking forward to getting the pattern
I am trying to get this patterned emailed to me and have not had any luck. Can you provide me a link or maybe email me directly? I received my order today and I am so looking forward to knitting!
Hi Virginia,
I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having trouble accessing this pattern! I’m seeing in our records that you received and opened the email with the PDF download in it on 12/31. Can you let me know if you were able to open the PDF then?
All the best,
Lili
Hi – made an adult small roll brim and have some yarn left over – going to make another and was wondering if Nigh DK would be good for a pompom?
Hi Eleanor,
Thanks for your question! Nigh Dk could be great as long as you are able to get enough wraps to fill out your pom pom. You can also check out our Pom Pom Tutorial for further instructions. Let us know if you have any other questions along the way!
Happy making,
Gavriella
Hi, I tried to download the pattern many times by entering my email but it didnt seem to work. I checked everywhere and nothing showed up. I tried to search for “Download Your Free Basic Hats For Everyone Pattern” like recommended for others and still nowhere to be found. Is there other way to access the pattern? thank you
N.Soler
Hi N.Soler,
Thank you for reaching out! Were you able to find access to your digital pattern? Our system shows that an email should have been sent to the email provided here but if you are still having any issues accessing or opening the file, please let me know and I will make sure we figure out a solution!
All the best,
Gavriella
Hello,
First, thank you for this free pattern! I plan on purchasing more after this one. For this pattern and others that don’t specify a toddler size…What size would I make for a toddler (baby or kid size)? Also, my 8 year old head circumference is 20.75 inches. Would my 8 year old need a kid size or small adult size? (P.S. I’m somewhat new to knitting.)
Thank you,
Ashley
Hi Ashley,
Thank you so much for writing in! We are so happy to hear you will be making this pattern! I would recommend knitting the baby size for your toddler and the kids size for your 8yo. I hope this helps but please let us know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Hello
I just love Purl Soho !!
Is there anywhere I can find out th e correct way to measure one’s head to determine what size I should knit?
Thank you kindly
Barbara
Hi Barbara,
Thank you so much for writing in! We do not currently have a tutorial on how to get these measurements but I would recommend measuring the widest part of the wearer’s head to help you select a size and then measuring from the crown to mid-ear for the height of the hat! I hope this helps but please let us know if you have any other questions!
Warmly,
Gavriella
I’d love to make the ear flap hat for a 14 month old, but wonder which yarn would be machine washable? How would I alter the pattern for the yarn?
Hi Ann,
Thank you for writing in! That’s a great question! We would recommend checking out Morning as a great DK machine washable yarn! I would also like to recommend our Sweater Soap and our How to Hand Wash a Sweater tutorial should you decide to go with Nigh Dk as we don’t currently have a wool alternative for this pattern! You could also check out Anzula For Better or Worsted as it is only a tad thicker and could still work for this pattern as long as you are able to achieve gauge! I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Hi, I am wondering what size to knit the rolled brimmed hat for a child with a 50cm circumference as I can’t see what the measurements would be when stretched?
Many thanks in advance, I look forward to knitting this!
Sophia
Hi Sophia,
Thanks for writing in! I’d recommend knitting the Kid size. These hats will stretch about 3 or 4 inches (7.5 – 10cm) when worn, and hats should always fit with negative ease to make sure they fit snugly around the head!
All the best,
Lili
Hi, so many lovely options with this pattern. How do you keep the rolled edge from over-rolling. Mine just keeps going, making it hard to measure to the point where I should start decreasing. Your pictured hats with the rolled edge look so lovely and flat.
Hi Julie,
Thank you for writing in! Because this project is knit in stockinette stitch, there will always be a bit of a natural curl to the fabric. We recommend wet blocking your hat, making sure to let it soak in the water for a significant period of time. We find that this method of blocking is more effective than spray or steam blocking and really helps to minimize curling.
I hope this helps you achieve the look you want for your project, but please let me know if you have any other questions!
All the best,
Gavriella
Hello – I made the baby size and it seemed to be suitable more for a toddler. What would you recommend for a newborn?
Hi Mary,
Thanks for writing in, although I’m so sorry to hear that your hat came out larger than expected! Would you mind letting me know what your gauge measurements (both stitch and round) are? In cases like this, we often find that a gauge discrepancy is the root of the issue, so I want to double check that first!
All the best,
Lili
