Cozy Ear Flap Hat
No one’s fond of cold ears and we’re all pretty averse to icy wind blowing down their canals. So, here is a hat designed to protect these most vital appendages.
And you know that swathe at the back of your head that gets ignored by both hat and scarf? This hat covers that too! These are important practical issues but certainly not excuses to be uncute. In fact, these concerns for warmth and comfort may have inspired our sassiest hat yet!
For toastiness and style I turned to Purl Soho’s Super Soft Merino. This is one yarn you’ll welcome right up against your ears. Itch-free and wonderfully sumptuous, it also happens to make the best pom poms ever. So don’t leave the top of your Cozy Ear Flap Hat out in the cold!
Make your ears happy! -Whitney

Make one single crochet for every stitch or row around the whole hat. Slip stitch into the beginning chain, cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitch.
Pom Pom
For the smaller size pom pom use either the 2 1/2-inch template from the Clover pom pom maker or the green one from the Susan Bates kit. And for the larger pom pom, use either the 3 3/8-inch Clover template or the yellow Susan Bates one. (If you need help with your Susan Bates Pom Pom Maker, check out our Pom Pom Tutorial right here!)
Bring the tails of the pom pom into the inside center top of the hat. Tie a knot and weave in the ends.

Hi,
I am new to knitting and I'm wondering if there is an alternate cheaper brand of yarn that would give the same effect, I'm having a difficult time finding the Sister brand of wool.
Hi Vanessa,
Here is a link to all our bulky yarn options: https://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/3-knitting-crochet-yarn?filters%5B%5D=8
Hope you find something you like!

Hello!
Could I substitute some leftover Swans Island worsted for this pattern? I'm new enough to knitting to be unsure about substituting anything without expert advice!
Thanks!
Hi Ashley-
The Swans Island Worsted is too thin for this project, unfortunately. You might want to check out the Big Rib Thank You Hat here, https://www.purlsoho.com/create/thank-you-hats/
It uses Swan's Island Worsted!
Thank you!
Molly
This is exactly the pattern I've been looking for for my daughter. But she is only 2!! Can you help me size this down for a toddler? I've looked everywhere and this is the first pattern I've come across with ear flaps and a great big pom pom! Thanks!
Hi Sara,
We do have plans to size this pattern down, although I'm not sure if we'll get to it this spring or next fall. If you stay posted, we should have something for you in the near to not-too-distant future!
Thanks for asking!
Whitney
Very cute pattern! I really like that it's in a large range of sizes. It would be handy to have a PDF file of the pattern, but I can't find one on your site.
Thank you so much for the additional sizes! I just made the hat (yellow with BIG pom pom) and love it! Now the baby can have one too!
Great pattern.
It's going t be a featured find tomorrow on the at play blog
http://www.atplayonline.com
I hope you'll stop by

I really like this hat and is thinking about substituting it with an aran weight. Do you have the row gauge for this?
Hi Lucy,
The row gauge is 4 rows to the inch.
Let us know if you have any other questions and thanks for this one!
Whitney
Help! This is a different hat than was posted at this same link before! It was knit in Knit Collage Sister yarn before. So is this is the same gauge, pattern and all?? I am picking up an old project that I wanted to finish…
HI Marianne,
No, this pattern is slightly different. Here's a link to the original pattern: http://web.archive.org/web/20130116020031/https://www.purlsoho.com/create/cozy-warm-hat/
I'm sorry for the confusion! Please let us know if you have any other questions!
Whitney
is it possible to have a pdf file down load for the cozy ear flap free pattern?
Hi Irene-
Currently we don't have PDFs available but you can certainly print this pattern out for free.
Thank you for your question!
Molly
I am in the middle of knitting the body. I can't figure out if the last cable cast on was on the front or back of the hat. Is it knit 41/4 in from the front of the hat or from the bottom of the nape?
Hi Kelly,
The last cable cast on is for the front of the hat, and so you will be knitting 4 1/2 inches from the front cast on edge.
I hope this clarifies things for you. Please let us know if you have any other questions!

I can not tell you how excited I am that I found your site…..I am just getting back into knitting….I learned it from my MIL eons ago and even did baby sweaters, hats as gifts..but then I was blessed with 3 kids and I did my last sweater for my daughter when she was 4….she is now 43…yep! I sew, crochet and QUILT quilt quilt….but I picked up my knitting needles again and just find it so fullfilling and relaxing…..so!! I hope to get better and better and offer knitting lesson groups along with my quilting classes….I am a retired nurse and I am ready to rock and roll with these two activities…..along with life with Hub and 9 grandkids! 8 of which are gals!….anyways….i feel like you have given us so much on this site…..I just ordered a book on socks because I could not remember how to use the 4 open ended knitting needles….and my MIL is in heaven….so your pictures are a gift…hey maybe she is looking down and taking care of me !!!……You have a sweet knitted day….I will have to say knitted/quilting day for me!!…..Sorry so long a post….just am so thankful in NW snow bound Indiana transplanted Buckeye!
Hello,
I am beginning to decrease on the baby hat but am confused by "*Knit to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round. (6 stitches decreased)."
I knitted to 2 stitches before the marker and k2tog; I continued to knit that round & came to the marker – once more stopping 2 stitches before the marker and k2tog. I only decreased two stitches in doing so (I went from 42 to 40 stitches).
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
Hi Sara,
I think you missed the step right before the Crown which says, "On the final round, place a marker after every 7 (8, 9, 10, 11) stitches. (5 additional markers placed)."
If you do this, you should be all straightened out. If not, please let us know and we'll help you out! Thank you for your question!
Whitney
Hi! I would love to make this hat, but I don't crochet. Is there a good tutorial for the crocheted edge or could I substitute an i-cord edge?
Hi Rachel,
Sure, an Attached I-cord would be a great substitute! Here's our tutorial if you need it: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/knitting-tutorials-advanced-te/2008/1/23/attached-i-cord-tutorial.html
Or if you do want to give the crochet edge a try, you may find our Crochet Basics tutorial helpful: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/crochet-tutorials/crochet-basics.html
Thanks for asking and please let us know if you have any other questions!
Whitney
hi there,
I’m ready to knit this hat, but I noticed that the pattern calls for size us 11 needles, but the yarn calls for us 13 needles. can you clarify this for me?
thanks, marla
Hi Marla-
Needle size is always just a recommendation, it’s most important that you get the correct gauge! For this pattern and this gauge we used a size 11 needle so that’s what we suggest.
Thanks for your question!
Molly
I am up to the decreasing part..it says repeat last 2 rounds (4) more times. Repeat the decrease round every round 3 more times.
Can you clarify this please. The last 2 rounds would have been a knit round and a decrease round.
Hello Ellen,
The pattern is asking you to repeat the sequence of 1 knit round and 1 decrease round (4) more times for your size to gradually shape the crown of the hat and balance out the decreases. The next step has you repeating only the decrease round 3 more times in order to quicken the decreasing in the last part of the crown. You seem to be reading the directions correctly! Please let us know if you have more questions!
-Alyson
Is it possible to do this pattern with DPNs only?
Hi Shelley-
Sure! You can do most hats on DPNS only the circular needles are mostly for convenience.
Thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Hi! Do you have instructions for making the crochet edge?
Thank you!
Ashley
Hi Ashley-
The crocheted edge is explained with photos in the “Crocheted Edge” section of the pattern. Please let us know if you have any more questions!
Molly
Hi Molly,
I see this section but it isn’t very descriptive. I don’t know how to crochet… I find this section surprisingly limited compared to your usual pattern notes. If you can provide more instruction it would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Ashley
Hi Ashley-
We have a crochet basics tutorial that you can see here: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2007/04/12/crochet-basics/ The Single Crochet section should be helpful! If you still have questions please let me know.
Best-
Molly
Hi,
I wanted to thank you for your great pattern. I have made 5 hats now but I have a question. On each side of the front before the ear flaps I end up with a gap. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong. I also end up with a little indent in the back where the join is. I love the pattern and want to do it right.
Hello Karen!
The indent in the back at the join is not 100% avoidable for anyone. Both of the issues you are speaking about will be smoothed over by crocheting around the edge of the hat. This is the reason that we included this step!
Since the construction of the ear flaps is done by casting on in the middle, there is bound to be some inconsistencies with the tails you have to weave in. I would recommend weaving in all of your ends securely and while you’re doing this using them to try and stitch together any gaps or indents you may have. Then crochet along the edge to create a neat edge! I hope this helps and best of luck! -Alyson
Hi Purl Bee,
Would I be able to follow your pattern without using circular needles, ie do those bits on DPNs/straight needles?
Thanks a lot,
Kathryn
Hi Kathryn,
Thank you for writing in and out apologies for the delayed response! You can certainly use DPNs if you prefer. Just be sure to organize your stitches so that all of the stitches for each ear flap are one their own DPN.
Happy knitting!
Cassy
Hi! If the recipients head (an 8 year old) measures about 22″, do you recommend making the woman’s large? Thanks so much!
Hi Rhonda,
Yep! This will do! A 20″ hat will fit perfectly on a 22″ head!
Best,
Adam
Hi, I’m not clear on the sizing in the pattern. Would size 1 fit a 2 year old, or is it for an older child?
Hi Helen,
Thanks for writing in. I think you are referring to the section regarding how many skeins you need for each size. If you look at the size section of the pattern, you’ll see a range of sizes and measurements. Thanks!
-Adam
