Our Easy Heel Colorblock Socks do an ingenious job of avoiding the potentially difficult heel- and gusset-shaping of traditional patterns.

You simply knit the whole leg and foot as a tube, stopping along the way for a couple of scrap-yarn half-rows, which you later pick up in order to knit the heel in the round… Amazing for first-time sock knitters and for anyone else who likes an easy trick!
This pattern is full of options, with instructions for mid calf-length, crew-length, and ankle-length versions for kids and adults alike. It’s even knitter’s choice whether you’re a top-down (cuff-to-toe) or bottom-up (toe-to-cuff) and a DPN or Magic Loop kind of person!

Materials

Purl Soho’s Quartz, 65% merino wool and 35% suri alpaca. Each skein of this fingering-weight yarn is 420 yards/ 100 grams.

ANKLE VERSION
- Main Color: 1 skein; approximately 125–155 (165–195, 200–230, 245–280, 280–325) total yards required, depending on foot length
- Contrast Color: 1 skein; approximately 60 (75, 95, 120, 140) total yards required
CREW VERSION
- Main Color: 1 skein; approximately 125–155 (175–205, 200–260, 245–320, 340–385) total yards required, depending on foot length
- Contrast Color: 1 skein; approximately 120 (140, 165, 200, 230) total yards required
MID-CALF VERSION
- Main Color: 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) skein(s); approximately 170–200 (240–270, 300–330, 365–400, 430–475) total yards required, depending on foot length. We used Lavender Moon for one pair and Icicle Blue for the other.
- Contrast Color: 1 skein; approximately 120 (140, 165, 200, 230) total yards required. For the Lavender Moon pair, we used Yellow Yarrow, and for the Icicle Blue pair, we used Pink Guava.

You will also need...

US 1 (2.5 mm), 32-inch or longer circular knitting needles for Magic Loop OR a set of US 1 (2.5 mm) double pointed needles
A few yards of fingering-weight scrap yarn
For Toe-Up Version: A size B–E (2.5–3.5 mm) crochet hook for Provisional Cast On

Gauge

34 stitches and 50 rounds = 4 inches in stockinette stitch

Sizes

Little Kid (Big Kid/Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large, Adult X-Large)

Foot Circumference: 6 (7, 8, 9, 10) inches. Choose a size that is approximately 1–2 inches smaller than the circumference of the wearer's foot.
Finished Leg Length, from Top of Heel:
- Ankle: 2 (2¼, 2¼, 2½, 2½) inches
- Crew: 4½ (5, 5½, 6, 6½) inches
- Mid-Calf: 6½ (7½, 8, 8½, 9) inches
Foot Length: Adjustable
