Tassel: Tiny Attached Tassel
Sometimes a touch of whimsy, plucked from the head of woodland gnome, is what is needed to create the final special flourish for a new baby. The hat with the tiny attached tassel pictured here is our Pointy Elf Hat, a free knitting pattern, especially designed for the world’s newest inhabitants. Here’s our Tiny Attached Tassel tutorial where we show you how we do it!
Tiny Attached Tassel
Cut a length of the yarn (the more full you’d like the tassel, the longer the length you should cut). Thread it onto a tapestry needle.
Pinch the tip of the hat with the middle finger and thumb of your non-sewing hand.
Bring the needle through the tip of the hat, over the top of your index finger and back through the tip of the hat.
Repeat this, making as many loops as you want for your tiny tassel (I made 5 loops).
Then tightly wrap the around the base of the loops a few times.
Bring the needle up through the center of the tassel.
Trim the tassel to whatever length you desire.

the tassel is so cute and easy for me. I would like to use your yarn that I am receiving today (Purl Soho yarn, twisted worsted) for the hat, do I use the same directions as for the other yarns you used?
you have changed my idea of knitting. I am not bored anymore, thank you….jo

The link to the Pointy Hat for Newborns isn’t working. Is the pattern still available?

What a genius pattern. Perfect match for an Elizabeth Zimmerman Baby Surprise Jacket with the garter stitch finish. Will be making more. Thank you.
Hi Kathy,
What a great idea! Everyone loves a Baby Suprise Jacket, and a tassel would be adorable!
Happy Knitting!

Since I never use pom poms for babies (to easy to pull yarn out and get in mouth) , this tassel is a great alternative, Thanks for such a nice pattern, will use this earflap method on other hats too.
I have used this about a million times, so I hope it’s not too late to express my appreciation, The attached tassel is genius.
Hi Susan,
Thanks for reaching out! I am so glad to hear that you have enjoyed this tutorial!
Warmly,

Any thoughts on how to make multi-colored tassels? I’m making your super easy baby blanket (7 colors) and thought it would be fun to have the 7 colors in tassels at the corner.
Thanks!
Hi Susan,
Thanks for reaching out! That sounds like such a cute idea! Although it would be a bit of a different technique than what we demonstrate in this tutorial (since you won’t be using a single color) you could certainly make a tassel with multiple colors! I would recommend using one strand of each color and instead of 5 loops with one color, you can do 1 loop of each color, leaving the ends pointing up and then whichever color you do as the last strand you will use to secure the tassel!
You could also check out our other tassel technique which is a little different: Tassel
Please let us know how this turns out!
Warmly,
Gianna
When you bring the yarn through the tip of the hat, what have you done with the yarn end? Is it just incorporated into the tassel?
Hi Janet,
Good question! As the final step, you’ll bring the yarn end up through the center of the tassel again. That way it’ll blend in with the other strands of the tassel!
All the best,
Lili
