Sewn Layette in Cozy Flannel
A good friend of mine recently became a new mom … to twins! In celebration (and awe!) of her and her growing family, I made her two little guys a few classic pieces from our Sewn Layette, this time in Robert Kaufman’s irresistibly soft and cozy Shetland Flannel.
Our Sewn Layette Pattern is one of my personal favorites and includes instructions and pattern pieces for the Shirt, Romper, and Pants you see here, as well as Bloomers and the Shirt and Romper with short sleeves, all in sizes from newborn to 6 months.
I like to think of these new garments as a made-with-love cuddle that I’m giving the boys from afar and also as a big high-five to their amazing new mom! -Corinne

You make stuff I want to make
They make stuff that makes me want a baby!
So cute! Perfect for my last grandchild yet to be conceived! I love the fabric and the colors and the style. So wearable and not cutesy-cutesy! I will definitely order and keep this on file! Thank you!
I have this pattern. Does it work in a knit?
Hi Sandra,
Thanks for writing in! We have only sewn this layette up in woven fabrics. There are considerations to be made for the movement of knit vs. woven fabrics and I am unsure if this pattern will work well in a knit. Please do let us know if you try a knit fabric and how it comes out!
Best,
Cassy
I have 2 questions concerning this pattern: would nani iro double gauze be suitable, or would it be too heavy? Also, do the pants and romper allow for cloth diaper/ diaper cover bulk, or are is the pattern designed for a less bulky disposable diaper?
Thanks so very much!
Hi Kathy,
Thanks for writing in! Nani Iro double gauge would work great! It is actually a little lighter than the flannel and a little heavier than the original muslin that we sewed this pattern up in.
As to whether the pattern will accommodate a cloth diaper…. The back is larger than the front but I do not have a little one to test this on so I cannot say for certain. There certainly is room built in to accommodate a diaper and our stunning baby model was wearing one while on the job!
I hope that this helps!

This pattern is so adorable! Our little one wears cloth diapers. I made her the newborn size, but used the 0-3 month size around the bum. She’s now 9 pounds, and it fits quite nicely. The pants fit much better around her cloth-diapered bum than the standard baby leggings.
Good morning the Purlbees … what does this look like on the back for the pants and jumpsuit? Flat as the front or some extra “room” built in? One wishes to know for baby sewing and potential fit!
Hi Ina,
Thanks for writing in! There certainly is room built in to accommodate a diaper and our stunning baby model was wearing one while on the job!
I hope that this helps!

for the bloomers. (i’ve purchased the pattern) do you have a tutorial on how to attach the bias tape for the leg channels using your method? From your instructions it sounds like both sides of the bias tape are being sewn to the bloomers at the same time to create the channel. In most tutorials they show attaching one side of the tape to front facing fabric and then flipping the tape over to encase the fabric and then to sew the other half to the wrong side finishing by sewing on the tape itself….
Hi Emi,
We do not have a tutorial for attaching the bias tape. You are correct though. We are sewing both sides down at once. In many other applications of bias tape, you will sew only one side down at a time but in this case, sew down both at once.
I hope that this clears things up!
Happy sewing!

Hi everyone!
Beautiful pattern – can’t wait to sew it for my godchild.
I’d like to replace the snaps (every time I used them they were really hard to close and even more annoying to open). Do you have any suggestions what I could use instead?
Thanks a lot!
Hi Barbara,
Thanks for writing in and for the kind words! I think the shirt and romper would be very cute with ribbon ties to close them instead of snaps! The pattern includes instructions for attaching a ribbon to the inside to secure the inner flap of the shirt, so it should be fairly straightforward to add ties to both fronts and side seams.
I hope that helps! Please let us know how your version turns out!

This is an adorable pattern. Do you have any suggestions for finishing the seams, especially in the flannel? Thanks very much.
Hi Cathy,
Thanks for reaching out! I think a french seam would look great with pattern! You could also serge the seams or even a flat fell seam would look great especially with the flannel!
I hope this helps, happy crafting!

Hi! Is this pattern still available? I get an error when I click the link in the article.
