Cable Cloud Cowl
Sheep traversing a grassy green hill aren’t so dissimilar from clusters of cumulus clouds tracking across a bright blue sky. Fluffy, white, incredibly cozy (at least, in our imaginations!), sheep and clouds are naturally two of a kind. Cue Purl Soho’s new Merino Script.
Merino Script is a single ply of weightless merino with a beautiful handspun quality. It is truly cloud-like, both in the skein and knit up as this Cable Cloud Cowl. Worked as a tube in the round with its ends grafted together, one side of the cowl features pretty cables, while the other is in simple garter stitch. The result is a two-layer puff of pure goodness, ripe for twisting, folding, draping and playing!
Whichever way the wind blows or the clouds move, in our Cable Cloud Cowl you’ll be as warm and cozy as a sheep and as soft and fluffy as a cloud! -Laura

Finish
Turn the tube of knitting inside out, weave in the ends and then turn the tube of knitting right side out.
Using a spare 24 or 32-inch circular needle the same size as or smaller than the needle you used to knit, pick up the 110 stitches of the Provisional Cast On.
Bring the ends of the cowl around to meet each other, making sure there are no twists in the fabric.
Thread the 32-inch tail onto a tapestry needle and holding the two needles parallel with the right side of the fabric facing you, use the Kitchener Stitch to graft one end of the tube to the other.
Weave in the remaining ends and block as desired.

Looks beautiful but one question. I assume this is worked in the round but the instructions don’t tell me to join.
Maureen!!!
Thank you so very much for writing in.
The pattern has been corrected to include that very important, previously missing sentence.
Thank you again.
Laura
But the PDF has not been updated.
Hi Janet.
Thanks for pointing this out. We’ll be sure to remedy this.
Thanks again.
Laura
So, with the slip 3 wyib, are the stitches slipped purlwise?
Hi Carolyn.
YES! They are slipped purlwise! I am so sorry I initially forgot to mention that in the NOTES section. It is there now.
Thank you for asking and for writing in.
Laura
Love the pattern !
This is simply beautiful! I have a really silly question before I start though. Are the slip stitches all done knitwise?
Hi Deb.
Thats not a silly question at all. I’m sorry I left the note about that out. I will remedy that.
They are slipped purlwise.
Thanks for writing in!!
Laura
Yet another lovely pattern. Thank you for making it available.
My one and only thought on the cowl is the yarn. When I first looked at the photo I thought someone didn’t know how to knit cables well. They look sloppy… because of the thick and thin nature of the yarn.
I may be a picky perfectionist… preferring to use this particular yarn in a place that will show off the nature of the yarn to its true potential. Or am I not up to date on these things?
Wonderful pattern! I am already swatching to make a Christmas gift, and cannot wait to see it completed.
Thank you again.
MJ
Hi MJ.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
I bet this cowl would look great in a variety of yarns. I would try and stick to something a light and airy as Merino Script though. It’s a lot of knitting and the piece could become quite heavy or quite drape with the wrong yarn choice. If you knit it in something else, we’d love to see how it looks!
Thanks.
Laura
Hi Laura,
Thank you for your feedback.
I have several skeins each of Mulberry Merino in Ballet Pink, Black Green and Dark Loam that I think will make up this pattern beautifully. (OMG, I LOVE that yarn… just cannot get enough of it!)
Am I on the right track with my yarn choice? I realize I will have to change the cast-on and row count to make up for the lighter gauge of the Mulberry Merino. That I have no problem doing… I do it all the time.
Thank you again, Laura. I appreciate your expertise.
MJ
Hi MJ.
The Cable Cloud Cowl is knit with Merino Script… an aran weight yarn.
Mulberry Merino (which is just absolutely stunning, I just wound some up today) is more of a sport weight yarn.
You will have to do some major modifications for the Mulberry Merino to work on this project.
Did you see the Mistake Rib Scarf… It’s our first project in this new yarn, Mulberry Merino:
https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2014/11/17/mistake-rib-scarf-in-mulberry-merino/
And here is a link to a gallery of projects that use sport weight yarns:
https://www.purlsoho.com/create/tag/sport-weight-yarn/
Hope this helps.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Laura
I was wondering if you could do it so the inside was a contrasting color to the outside? would this be difficult?
thanks
katie
Hey Katie…
Doing the inside a different color would involve working the pattern flat and seaming it together. It’s definitely possible. But would take some modifying for sure!
I love that idea though, maybe we’ll work on getting something like that up on The Purl Bee soon!
Thanks for writing in.
Laura
So, keeping in mind the light and airy nature of this yarn, which seems to be an aran weight, would a worsted weight yarn work?
I have a lovely pink alpaca that I would love to try.
Also, was there much left of the three skeins when you were done? I am trying to figure yardage.
Thank you
Hi Samara.
I think you could get away with a worsted weight yarn for this project. The Merino Script is more Aran than Worsted, but I bet a thick worsted would work wonderfully. You may want to drop down in needle size and the finished dimensions may be a bit smaller, but it could work!
I would be wary of alpaca though. I love alpaca, but it’s quite a heavy fiber. The drape is going to be very different if you use alpaca. Not to say it won’t be beautiful, just different.
I used nearly all three skeins of the Merino Scrip… So just under 290 total yards.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Laura
Hi, Laura,
I’m wondering if purl bee has done a post on a favorite provisional cast-on. I feel confident in my knitting skills (hats, socks, scarves, etc.), but have never done a provisional cast-on. I want to try this cowl as well as some toe-up socks, but the cast-on is holding me back. Would you be willing to share your favorite method?
Thanks,
Melissa
Hi Melissa.
Thank you for writing in!! I am so sorry I initially forgot to link to our Provisional Cast On tutorial. It is now linked in the post and you can also find it here:
https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2007/12/10/provisional-cast-on/
Thanks again.
Laura
I am not able to get your beautiful pattern. My cables are almost invisible so can you confirm that:
“…Round 2 and ever other even round: Knit…”
Thank you!
Lucja
Hi Lucja.
Yes, round 2 you knit and all other even rounds you knit! The pattern is very subtle at first, it takes quite a few rows to begin to see the overall pattern.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Laura
Ups.. I used your pattern on a flat piece of scarf so my even rounds needed to be purl 🙂
Thank you!
Lucja
I agree with a previous comment that the merino script makes the cables look sloppy. if i do this again i will choose a consistently even yarn. Good pattern though.
I just finished knitting this with pistachio Merino Script yarn. I love it! It’s so soft and cuddly! Great for cold, cold weather! Thank you for another great pattern!
I ordered three skeins of your beautiful Merino Script yarn to make this cowl. This yarn is absolutely beautiful and I know I am going to love working with it. I can’t wait to try all your new Purl Soho yarns! However I was checking out Ravelry to see how the Cable Cloud Cowls look when they are done, and I read that I would run short of yarn with only three skeins. Is this accurate and if so, will I be able to purchase another skein with the same lot number?
Thank you for this question part of your patterns. It certainly makes me a lot more confident to start a new project when I don’t have a wonderful yarn shop like Purl Soho in my small town in NE.
Hi Linda.
I hadn’t seen that people were running short on yarn! I am so glad you wrote in. I’ll have to go investigate on Ravelry this afternoon.
If you are worried about running short, definitely pick up an extra skein. We’ve only had one shipment of the Merino Script so far… so it will be the same lot number for sure! And if you don’t end up using it and you didn’t wind it, you can return it for store credit or exchange it for something else!
Let me know if you have any questions.
Laura
hi you lovelies at purlbee
i’m 1/3 way through and just realised that the “slip 3 with yarn in back” is so that the peace would maintain more of a “flat” feel as opposed to a “tube”… but i’ve been doing my wyib quite loosely.. not sure if it’ll turn out nice..
maybe add a note somewhere in the pattern??
as i had no idea what this was for until 1/3 way in.. haha
but so soft and cozy~ love your work purling bees~~ <3
Hi Judy.
Thanks for sharing your experience here! It’s really helpful.
I didn’t do my slip 3 wyib particularly tightly. I bet even worked loosely, yours will turn out nice and those loose stitches will still achieve their purpose.
Glad you’re enjoying the pattern!
Laura
I’d like to substitute with different yarn. Should I use worsted or chunky weight yarn?
Hey Stephanie.
I would try and find a worsted weight yarn that is a little on the heavier side… for instance… Blue Sky’s Worsted Hand Dyes: https://www.purlsoho.com/purl/products/item/711-Blue-Sky-Worsted-Hand-Dyes. On the spectrum of yarn weights, it’s closer to an Aran than a DK.
Thanks for writing in.
Laura
When I ordered the yarn to make this pattern, I was told I would not need all of the three skeins. I am afraid that is not correct. I am sure I will run out of yarn before I finish. What is the total length before you bring the two ends together to complete the cowl?
Hi Punum,
That is correct! I used nearly all three skeins of the Merino Scrip… So just under 290 total yards. The length before grafting is approximately 30 inches.
Please let us know if you have any questions! -Laura
Hi Laura,
It seems like Merino Script is 190 yards each? So this would be closer to 600 total yards?
Just clarifying before casting on. Love the pattern!
Hannah
Hi Hannah,
Thanks for catching this! You are correct: you’ll need closer to 600 yards. I’ll go in and edit the comments if I can!
Best,
Adam
Hi!
Wondered if the join in the round row was a knit row?
Thanks!
Ali
Hello Ali!
For this pattern, you don’t need to do a complete round to join the work, simply join the round with the first knit stitch of Round 1 and then continue as written.
I hope this answers your question! Please don’t hesitate to write in again if you’re still confused! Thanks! -Alyson
Hi I love this pattern can’t wait to start it. Since I am a new knitter I’m confused as to why I need to join the ends together if this pattern is knit in the round. Could you please clarify and could you recommend subsitut yarn for this project. Beverley’s is the closest yarn store near me.Thank you for the gift of this pattern
Hello Helen!
This pattern is knit in the round in order to create a large tube of knitting. Then that tube of knitting is grafted together so that you have a double layered cowl in the end. Does that make sense? The circumference of the rounds of knitting you are creating won’t be large enough to go over your head, so the construction of the pattern should become more apparent as you knit along.
I’m not sure where the Beverly’s yarn store is that you are referring to, but any heavier Worsted or Aran weight yarn should work just fine for this pattern. Make sure to check the stitch gauge in order to make sure the sizing doesn’t get skewed. Happy knitting! -Alyson
I have completed first 32 rounds of the cowl and started on the second 32 rounds. Is the pattern correct in saying that I am to knit 32 rounds 6 times excluding the beginning round. Thus far my cables are not connecting together. Thanks Patsy Ciaciuch
Hi, Patsy!
Thank you so much for writing in! Sorry about the very delayed response! You’re reading of the pattern is correct, you will knit rounds 1-32 six more times (for a total of seven times). When you write, “excluding the beginning round” do you mean that you’re skipping round 1? If you are, that could be why you’re cables are not connecting. Please let me know so that we can get to the bottom of this.
Again, thank you for writing in!
Best wishes,
Kumeko
Hello,
I am looking to purchase Merino Script yarn in Heirloom White but it looks like there is none left. Do you know when you will be getting more on the website?
Thanks!
Tali
Hi Tali,
Thanks for writing in! I am sorry to say that Merino Script is discontinued and we will not be getting any more colors in than are currently available. If none of the colors that we currently have work for you, you may want to try a worsted weight yarn that is a little on the heavier side… for instance… Blue Sky’s Worsted Hand Dyes. On the spectrum of yarn weights, Merino Script is roughly an Aran. You will need just under 290 total yards or roughly 3 skeins of the Worsted Hand Dyes.
Happy Knitting!
Casst
Hi!
I noticed that there was no more merino script wool available in another color than yellow. Do you have any suggestion of a wool that i should use? Thank you!
Hi Laurence,
Thanks for writing in! Sadly, Merino Script has been discontinued, however, it can be easily replaced in this pattern. You will want to look for a worsted weight yarn that is a little on the heavier side… for instance… Blue Sky’s Worsted Hand Dyes or Cascade 220 Superwash Aran.
Happy knitting!
Cassy
