Button Candy Hat
As we bustle around in this brisk month of merriment, seasonal sweets seem to be everywhere you go. I must confess, even as an adult, when I’m offered a tray or bowl or basket of goodies, I reach with a sly grin, full of anticipation, overwhelmed by choice. That moment of choosing, it’s nearly as sweet as the sweet treat itself!
Now this may be a youngest sibling thing, but for me, being offered a moment all to myself to choose what I want, that brief moment of picking, it’s golden. It’s no wonder, my affinity for Button Candy. Feet of scrolling white paper covered with colored candy dots, and most importantly, all mine. Mine to be picked and plucked at my pace, creating patterns from my selections. So many options, so much joy.
Inspired by the festivity of those candy colors, the wonderment of their arrangement and the joy they bring, I knit up this Button Candy Hat. The bright colors of Koigu’s hand-dyed merino Needlepoint Yarns are perfect for the fair isle bobbles, and Purl Soho’s incredibly soft Line Weight merino makes a wonderfully downy backdrop.

I absolutely love this hat! Do you let the contrast colors run through or do you finish them at each button?
I would love to see a picture of the INSIDE of the hat- pretty please???
so CUTE -thanks for sharing!
This is a fantastic pattern. Even adults would love wearing this!!!
I receive so much pleasure from your site. I truly appreciate it!
Thank you
I love your patterns. They are creative and beautiful. Love the candy theme of these last few patterns, and I absolutely adore the hat. I can't wait to cast on and knit this for my granddaughter for Christmas. Thank you so much. Happy Holidays!
Lovely, fresh and bright hat!
Great hat! Don't have a kiddo but I'd totally make it for myself!
Hi Sew-Busy,
Corinne of Corinne's Thread currently has the hat (her sweet darling girl modeled it for us). As soon as I get my hands back on the hat back, I can email you a picture of the inside. Could you comment back with your email address in box provided in the comment form.
Thanks,
Laura
I would also like to see the inside of this hat if at all possible.
Hi Courtney,
Thanks for writing in! Please check your email for the image that you requested!
Best,
Cassy
Hi Lieke,
Great question. The contrast color yarn runs across the entire round of knitting. Each round of knitting that involves contrast yarn (the button candies) is worked using the method of Fair Isle. So, the yarn is carried for that entire round, and then cut at the end of the round.
Laura
This hat just adorable! I am thinking about what
contrasting colors I would use for a boys
version of this great child's hat!
Thanks for this & all the other wonderful
patterns & ideas you post in your newsletter!
They are awesome! Have Happy Holiday Season.

Could you spell out a pattern for an adult size. Both of my children have large heads. My 13 year old wears a 7 3/8 fitted hat but would love to wear this. I think her head is 22 inches in circumference
Hello Michele,
For a 22-inch head, I would aim to knit up a hat with the finished dimension of 20 inches.
20 inches x 8 1/4 stitches to the inch = 165 (which is divisible by 5, perfect)
Cast on 165.
Following pattern as instructed above.
After working the Candy Buttons and are working evenly, work until the hat is approximately 3 inches shy of your desired finished height (which will probably be around 8 inches from the rolled brim). Then…
Under SHAPE TOP OF HAT
Round 1 (Decrease Round): *K31, k2tog, place maker (pm), repeat from * to end of round. [160 stitches]
Round 2: Knit.
Round 3 (Decrease Round): *Knit to two stitches before marker, k2tog, repeat from * to end of round. (5 stitches decreased)
Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 one more time. [150 stitches]
Repeat Round 3 twenty-seven more times. [15 (15, 15) stitches]
Follow Pattern as instructed above for remainder.
i totally love all the tiny colorful dots!
I linked to your tutorial on my blog – thanks for sharing!

Hi,
I have noticed that you get a tighter bobble when you p2tog on the wrong side instead of k2tog
I, too, would love to see a photo of the inside of this hat! Thank you so much for your pattern notes. I find them to be so helpful! I'll admit, I'm a bit daunted by the bobble bits, but I'm excited to make this hat. =)
Good morning! I am getting ready to order this yarn from your site! Could you email the picture of hat inside to my above email?
Thanks!
Nancy
Hi Nancy-
Sure thing. A photo is on its way to you!
Thanks for getting in touch!
Molly
Can I have a picture of the inside as well? I see from the other entries that the dots stay connected. Does this cause any problems with catching on the loose strands? Thanks so much!
Hi Lora,
They are connected on the inside, just like fair isle! Since the floats are short enough, you shouldn’t have any problem catching on the strands in the back.
Thanks for your question!
Thomas
I would love a photo of the inside of the hat too! I am going to order the kit and was wondering if there would be enough color yarn to make TWO hats. If so, I would pick up another hank of the heirloom white while I’m at it.
Thanks!
Hi nkc.
There will be plenty of Heirloom White to make two hats! You will probably require a second skein of the contrast colors though.
I’ll have Molly send you a picture of the inside.
Thanks for writing in!
Let me know if you have any questions.
Laura
interesting – i thought it would be the other way around (needing more of the heirloom white instead of the colored yarn). can’t wait to get the photo and place my order. Thanks!
I would like to order this and would like a picture
of the inside of the hat too.
How do you order? I would like to order 2 and send one to a friend for Christmas.
Thank
Hi Linda.
I will get a photo of the inside of the hat over to you straight away!

Thanks so much for writing in.
Please let us know if you have any pattern questions.
Laura
Very cute pattern! Would a 16 inch circular needle work as well for the baby or toddler size? Thanks!
Hi Cc.
Thanks for writing in. The 16-inch circular needle to too long for the circumference of those smaller sizes. Working that number of stitches on that length needle, would stretch the stitches apart, straining them.
Please let us know if you have any questions. Thanks. -Laura
Can you please send me a photo of the inside of the hat, too? I always try to go give a hand knit hat as a present for new babies in our extended family and it seems there are a lot on the way. This will be a fun new challenge!
Hi Patty,
Thanks for writing in! I have sent the image to you!
Best,
Cassy
Tnx for this great hat. I’m knitting it for the smallest (baby), it gives a hight of 6,25”, but i’m Not clear on how many times the 6 rounds I should knit I don’t see the different sizes reflected. Only two times six rounds in all colors. Is that right? I don’t understand how one will be taller then the other. Thank you, love from Holland,
Hi Bianca,
Thanks for writing in! I think that I can help. The extra length comes at the bottom of the hat. After casting on, you will continue working in stockinette stitch, knitting each round, until the piece measures 1/4 (3/4, 1 1/4) inches from rolled edge. The first measurement is for the baby size, the second is for the toddler size and the third is for the child size.
I hope that this helps!
Cassy
I wish you had this in a crochet pattern. :’-( I love candy buttons, they remind me of childhood!
Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks for writing in! Although we do not have a crocheted version of this hat, I’ll be sure to pass your suggestion along to the design team!
Best,
Julianna
Can’t find your yarn how do l order
Hello Elizabeth,
Thank you for reaching out! It sounds like you are in the Create section of the site rather than the Shop. You can click either the shop button or the Create button to navigate the site. These buttons are located at the top of you page to the left.
I hope this clears things up for you and happy shopping!
-Marilla
I am making your baby fair isle sweater. Will the same yarn work for this hat?
Hello Anne,
This is a great question- this hat would work great knit up in Posey!
Happy knitting,
Marilla
Hi – do you have any suggestions for a specific ribbing or edge stitch instead of the curled edge?
Also, do you know approximately how many yards would be needed for the Toddler size? I’d like to make a few hats and trying to see how much is necessary.
Thanks!
Hi Karen,
Thanks for reaching out! Since this is an older pattern unfortunately I do not have the yardage used for the Toddler size. As for the edging I would recommend a 2×2 rib!
Sorry I don’t have more information for you but I hope this helps!
Gianna
The sizes given in the pattern are for baby, toddler, child. I just noticed in the comments, you have the sizes as newborn, baby, toddler. This is quite different. I’m partway finished with the first size for a 5 month old. The newborn size will not a 5 month old. . Please clarify.
Hi Donna,
Thanks for reaching out! I can confirm that the sizes of this hat are as listed in the SIZES section, Baby (Toddler, Child). It looks like the comments you were referencing mistakenly referred to a newborn size that isn’t actually included in the pattern. I’ve gone ahead and edited those to make sure there is no more confusion going forward!
I also encourage you to always consult the dimensions of each size when selecting a size! This will help you make the most informed decision about which size to make. You can find these in the SIZES section on this page!
All the best,
Lili
Can I get a copy of the photo of the inside of the hat? I know how to carry the contrasting yarn in Fair Isle style, but I am wondering about weaving in the ends of the contrasting color yarns. Normally I would use a duplicate stitch, but I am worried that the yarn would show through the white yarn. Thanks.
Hi Kim,
I’m afraid that we no longer have the sample we made of this hat on hand. I would recommend using duplicate stitch to weave in the ends though! It will be the most invisible method since the colorful yarn lays behind each stitch, rather than traveling between stitches like in other weaving methods.
All the best,
Lili
