A Purl Soho Pattern: Loeffler Randall Rain Boot and Rain Bootie Stirrup Socks!

Early this fall Jessie Randall from Loeffler Randall had her team contact us to see if we’d be interested in doing a collaboration around their elegant and cool LR Rain Boots and LR Rain Booties. At Purl Soho we’re huge fans of Loeffler Randall (and are honored to have Jessie as one of our customers) so we were thrilled to create this pair of Stirrup Socks especially for their rain boots and booties.

The Boots
The Loeffler Randall Boots and Booties are the perfect solution to wet fall weather. They’re rain proof so they are completely practical, but they also have an elegant shape and come in great colors, so you can wear them anywhere. The boot has a back zipper, the booties lace up and they are available in black, army and taupe.

The Socks
Once we thought about creating stirrup socks all of our creative juices started flowing. We realized that a stirrup sock is a great, substantial, but approachable project for lots of knitters. Also, being without a heel and toe they’d work well in the elegantly shaped LR boot foot (without the bulk of a hand knit sock), and also the back of the leg shaping means not only that this sock is very pretty, it also fits easily inside a boot leg. We made the long pair of socks to go with the LR Rain Boot, and the short pair to go with the LR Rain Bootie.

The biggest challenge of the pattern is using double pointed needles, but luckily we have a fantastic double pointed needle tutorial that you can visit right here if you need it.

Before we even started developing our Stirrup Sock Pattern we knew we’d want to create it with Anzula’s Squishy, which is perhaps one of the most perfect sock yarns ever created. Squishy comes in an amazingly generous hank of 385 yards of gorgeous superwash merino wool, cashmere and nylon, and we wanted to be sure you could get an entire long pair from one skein. As it turns out, one skein (385 yards) will make the one pair of the long version of the stirrup socks OR two pairs (!) of the short version. Squishy comes in tons of great colors, and is beautiful to work with. The socks are substantial, cozy without being heavy.

Loeffler Randall will be offering a free Purl Soho Stirrup Sock pattern inside the box of every pair of Rain Boots and Rain Booties, or you can buy the pattern directly from us right here!

Brenda
Those stirrup socks are fantastic! I have a sock book and saw similar stirrup socks in there, made them, and now I finally know what to wear them with! Love your blog, thanks for being an inspiration (and your shop is a major player on my Christmas list).
xoxo,
Lauren @ Craft My Life Away
That color!! Is that the Ducky colorway for the pair of long stirrup socks? I want to be sure to get THAT color!
Hi Mary Jo,
Yes, it's Ducky, enjoy!
Those are so neat! I might have to make a pair…
This is AWESOME!!! Please please update at some point with children's sizes! I would LOVE them.
Those stirrup socks are great! Do you offer the pattern for purchase through ravelry or another online source? I live in Portland, so the shipping is pretty prohibitive (more than the cost of the actual pattern), but I sure would love to get my hands on a copy!
Oh I love them, the colors, the details, they are perfect!
Hi, beautiful pattern. Can this pattern be purhased at the shop?
The socks remind me of leg warmers from the 80s…
HI Kail,
We have a special shipping rate for single patterns, I believe it is $2.00. Just enter it into the special instructions box on your order and we'll adjust the charge on your credit card. (We're working on downloadable patterns for sale too, but it probably won't get done before then end of December).
Hi Anastasia,
Yes, we've got the pattern at the store!

Oh I love those stirrup socks. What a great idea. They look so cute and colorful sticking out the top of the boots! adorable!
I can always count on you all to help me cross off another item on the gift knit list. My Aunt (with a clsoet full of boots) won't know what hit her! Thank you, Purl girls.
they are pure genius! i have boots that don't really allow me to wear thick socks or otherwise my toes get really squished; this is a good solution.
These socks would also be great for doing yoga in this cold waether – warm feet and legs without losing grip on your mat…
where did you get those lovely boots?!?! ahhh those socks looks so comfy. 🙂
What a great idea and those boots are amazing!
Wow, what a post, I really liked it. Its really great mixture of art, creativity and fashion. The images which are posted in this post is simply fantasy. Thanks for sharing.
What a fab idea to do stirrup socks! I always find that my boots scrunch up at the tops if I don't wear thick socks, but when I do wear thicks socks, I feel like my toes are being squashed inside the shoes, so these would be perfect. And what cute boots too!
OOOh, thank you so much for this pattern! We loved this pattern the minute we saw it and had to have it but didn't think for one moment that it would arrive in the UK so quickly.
Lovely, lovely pattern – thanks again, can't wait to get going on it!
I'm being really good and saving it for knitting at the pub tomorrow – we'll blog about it for sure! Nic x
Anyone out there selling completed pairs? I never have mastered this art form and would LOOOOOOOVE to get a pair (or a couple) of these sock!!!
That is such a cute idea, I love that 😀
Xoxo
I don't knit! Can I buy these somewhere? Can I pay someone to knit some for me? Anyone??
Like Kail I am also looking to purchase just this pattern. I live in Minnesota and unfortunetly the shipping is costing more than the pattern, do you still have a reduced shipping cost for just the single pattern? Do you know if it will be available through a download version soon?
Thank you!
Any body want to knit me a pair? I can only manage normal knit stitch and then still manage to muck it up.
Or maybe somebody in Australia, would like to teach me how to make them!
I just started knitting swatches for this and can't for the life of me get gauge… The suggested gauge for the yarn is 28-32 st/4 in, which is what I'm getting. Even on the smallest of needles I can't see getting 36 st/4 in. Is this gauge really correct? I am really excited about these and don't want to end up with baggy socks! Thanks.
Heya, These are wonderful, thanks for making this pattern!
Is it downloadable yet? And what colors are the ones in the pictures?
hugs n luv

Thank you!– Molly
Right. I've got the yarn, now I just need you to make a digital version 😉 Please let it be soon!
Hugs n luv!
Hello, any chance it's been made into a download yet? I'm in the UK and I've been lusting after these for ages, I've even taught myself to knit specially, but on the breadline here we can't afford 17 bucks just to ship one pattern.
Hi Abigail-
It isn't available for download but if you contact our customer service department they might be able to ship it to you less expensively since it is just a piece of paper. Their email is customerservice AT purlsoho DOT com
Thank you!
Molly
Great idea! Love it…I'll surely try this!
Char!! Yes please!!
Char I'm interested too
I'm a figure skater, and I wear stirrup legwarmers. If you slip the heel part over and under the heel of your skate they look so cool! The legwarmers that I have are sold only in black and pink, while very nice I can't wait to make some of these in some very cool colors!
Hi. I just wanted to ask does the pattern have adjustments for different calf sizes? I just really wouldn't want to get this then discover I have no idea how to adjust it to make them fit me.
Is there another yarn that you would recommend for the project? Perhaps Purl Soho Line Weight?
Hello Quynh,
Thanks for writing in! The reason Squishy works well for this project is because it is machine washable, a nice perk when knitting a sock. However the gauge should work out with Line Weight or our Linen Quill yarn.
I hope this helps!
-Marilla
I see that Squishy yarn is no longer available. What else would you recommend for the boot socks?
Hi Jennifer,
Great question! Our Posy yarn is an excellent substitute for Squishy and would work perfectly for this pattern!
Happy knitting!
Julianna
Hi! I was wondering if this pattern is available for purchase anywhere. It is just what is like to make for my daughter.
Hi Nicole,
Thanks for reaching out! Our Stirrup Sock Pattern has been discontinued from purchase, however, we offer it for free to anyone who’s interested! For further assistance, please contact us at [email protected]
