A Purl Soho Pattern: Loeffler Randall Rain Boot and Rain Bootie Stirrup Socks!
Early this fall Jessie Randall from Loeffler Randall had her team contact us to see if we’d be interested in doing a collaboration around their elegant and cool LR Rain Boots and LR Rain Booties. At Purl Soho we’re huge fans of Loeffler Randall (and are honored to have Jessie as one of our customers) so we were thrilled to create this pair of Stirrup Socks especially for their rain boots and booties.
The Boots
The Loeffler Randall Boots and Booties are the perfect solution to wet fall weather. They’re rain proof so they are completely practical, but they also have an elegant shape and come in great colors, so you can wear them anywhere. The boot has a back zipper, the booties lace up and they are available in black, army and taupe.
The Socks
Once we thought about creating stirrup socks all of our creative juices started flowing. We realized that a stirrup sock is a great, substantial, but approachable project for lots of knitters. Also, being without a heel and toe they’d work well in the elegantly shaped LR boot foot (without the bulk of a hand knit sock), and also the back of the leg shaping means not only that this sock is very pretty, it also fits easily inside a boot leg. We made the long pair of socks to go with the LR Rain Boot, and the short pair to go with the LR Rain Bootie.
The biggest challenge of the pattern is using double pointed needles, but luckily we have a fantastic double pointed needle tutorial that you can visit right here if you need it.
Before we even started developing our Stirrup Sock Pattern we knew we’d want to create it with Anzula’s Squishy, which is perhaps one of the most perfect sock yarns ever created. Squishy comes in an amazingly generous hank of 385 yards of gorgeous superwash merino wool, cashmere and nylon, and we wanted to be sure you could get an entire long pair from one skein. As it turns out, one skein (385 yards) will make the one pair of the long version of the stirrup socks OR two pairs (!) of the short version. Squishy comes in tons of great colors, and is beautiful to work with. The socks are substantial, cozy without being heavy.

Materials

- Yarn: Anzula Squishy, One Skein
- Long Pair requires 375 yards
- Short Pair requires 185 yards
- Needles: A set of US size 2 (2.75mm) double pointed needles, or size required by you to get gauge

36 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
Size
Pattern includes directions for long stirrup socks (14-inches from heel opening) and short stirrup socks (8-inches from heel opening)

Oh, and the long stirrup socks work perfectly in Loeffler Randall’s beautiful Classic Matilde Flat Boots too!

Those stirrup socks are great! Do you offer the pattern for purchase through ravelry or another online source? I live in Portland, so the shipping is pretty prohibitive (more than the cost of the actual pattern), but I sure would love to get my hands on a copy!

they are pure genius! i have boots that don't really allow me to wear thick socks or otherwise my toes get really squished; this is a good solution.
These socks would also be great for doing yoga in this cold waether – warm feet and legs without losing grip on your mat…

What a fab idea to do stirrup socks! I always find that my boots scrunch up at the tops if I don't wear thick socks, but when I do wear thicks socks, I feel like my toes are being squashed inside the shoes, so these would be perfect. And what cute boots too!

Any body want to knit me a pair? I can only manage normal knit stitch and then still manage to muck it up.

I just started knitting swatches for this and can't for the life of me get gauge… The suggested gauge for the yarn is 28-32 st/4 in, which is what I'm getting. Even on the smallest of needles I can't see getting 36 st/4 in. Is this gauge really correct? I am really excited about these and don't want to end up with baggy socks! Thanks.

Hello, any chance it's been made into a download yet? I'm in the UK and I've been lusting after these for ages, I've even taught myself to knit specially, but on the breadline here we can't afford 17 bucks just to ship one pattern.

I'm a figure skater, and I wear stirrup legwarmers. If you slip the heel part over and under the heel of your skate they look so cool! The legwarmers that I have are sold only in black and pink, while very nice I can't wait to make some of these in some very cool colors!
Hi. I just wanted to ask does the pattern have adjustments for different calf sizes? I just really wouldn't want to get this then discover I have no idea how to adjust it to make them fit me.
Is there another yarn that you would recommend for the project? Perhaps Purl Soho Line Weight?

Thanks for writing in! The reason Squishy works well for this project is because it is machine washable, a nice perk when knitting a sock. However the gauge should work out with Line Weight or our Linen Quill yarn.
