Sole Salvo For Purl Soho: Pinstripe Dog Sweater
With the dog days of summer behind us, it’s time to consider Fido’s next-season look. Our choice for front row seats at the fashion show, or just a walk around the neighborhood, is Sole Salvo’s very dapper Pinstripe Dog Sweater.
Knit from tail to neck in one piece, this doggy dud’s style is in the details. With a centered decrease down the back, thin stripes turn into a striking chevron and a smartly shaped shirttail, while 2×2 ribbing along the chest and edges ensures a tidy fit.
Boy dogs and girls dogs get a slightly different belly treatment, and happily, the Pinstripe Dog Sweater is designed to fit most pooches, from dachshunds to dobermans or, even, an offspring of the two!
For elegance and practicality, Sole designed her Pinstripe Dog Sweater in our beautiful hand-dyed Posy. A blend of superwash merino (for stretch), cashmere (for super softness), and nylon (for durability), its light fingering gauge won’t weigh your buddy down but will keep them toasty warm. Cast on for your favorite pup and get ready to turn some heads at the dog run-way!

What are the thoughts on fit for broad shoulder/narrow hip breeds? Bulldogs, pugs, etc?
Hi Stephanie,
Thanks for reaching out! I think this pattern would certainly be suitable for breeds with broad shoulders and narrow hips! I would suggest choosing a size based on the chest measurements, and with the added ribbing along the belly, the fit should be good for both the broad shoulders and narrow hips!
I hope this helps, happy knitting!
Gianna
Is there errata for this pattern the chevron setup row for female dogs?
Hi Kyle,
Thanks for reaching out! We currently do not have any errata listed for this pattern; all errata for our patterns can be found here. If there is a particular section of the pattern that you’re having trouble with, you can always reach out to us at [email protected] for additional help!
Warmly,
Kelsey
I am confused by setup row for chevron. After I complete cable cast on there are still stitches remaining from ribbing section. No mention is made of what to do with these before continuing to body section…
Hi Lisa,
Thanks for reaching out! I am happy to help! Are you making the sweater for a female or male? The pattern is slightly different between the two, so I want to make sure that I can instruct you accordingly!
Looking forward to your response!
Gianna
I am knitting a size med male. I have the same question regarding the chevron set up. I have 4 stitches left at the end of the row before I cast on the cable stitches.
Hi Mary,
Thanks for reaching out, and apologies for the delayed response! I want to let you know that we’re currently looking into this issue right now to determine what’s going wrong in the pattern. Once we’ve figured out how to fix it, we’ll let you know immediately! Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention.
All the best,
Lili
Hi again Mary!
As an update, we’ve finished taking a careful look at this pattern and found there was a mistake in the male medium size which trickled down pretty far down the pattern. We’re so sorry about that and apologize for the confusion! Please know that the pattern has been updated and if you redownload it from your pattern library, the latest version should pop up automatically.
I hope the numbers help you get back on track! Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you need any additional help getting to where you need to be.
All the best,
Zha Zha
I am having trouble on the medium male chevron set up row. I have 4 extra stitches and am not sure what went wrong. I have counted the stitches out several times. I not a couple other people had this problem. I tried to redownload the pattern but it has the same instructions that I already have.
Hi Kristin,
Thanks for reaching out. That’s very odd that the pattern you downloaded again was the same! I’m going to send you the most up-to-date PDF directly, so be on the lookout for an email from [email protected] very soon!
All the best,
Lili
Am I reading this pattern wrong? I am at the “Join Back + Chest”. The last row on the back and the last row on the chest is MC. SO the joining round should not be MC it should be CC or there will be 4 rows of MC in a row.
Hi Adrienne,
Thanks for reaching out! The pattern is correct as written. As you can see in the photos, the stripe pattern is actually built up of a larger section of the main color (3 rows), followed by a single stripe of the contrasting color, a single stripe of the main color, and then another single stripe of the contrasting color. So at points throughout the pattern there will be 3 rows of the main color together, this creates the larger stripe!
I hope this clears things up!
Gianna
I think the last row of the back (before placing back sts onto a stitch holder) is the second of three MC rows, but the last row of the chest is the third MC row. So when you join the chest and back, you work the back sts in MC, but when you get around to the chest, you switch to the CC.
Hello, I also have a question about the male size medium pattern. I have worked the Lower Back and Body sections but I have 195 stitches on my needles, not 199 as indicated in the pattern. There is a chance I missed an increase here or there but given that there seems to be a 4 stitch discrepancy from other comments, I want to double check if there is an updated pattern or stitch count for this size. I didn’t count the stitches on my needles after the setup chevron row, but counting the stitches from the pattern, it seems as though the size medium should have 177 stitches (not 181 as the pattern indicates).
Hi Hilary,
Thanks for writing in and bringing this to our attention! The error you encountered is indeed related to the other instances. We took another look at the pattern and realized that we didn’t completely update it accurately the last time it came up! The number of stitches that you cable cast on for the male medium size should actually be 46, and not 42. Then the stitch count will add up to 181! I hope this helps clear things up, and thank you again for letting us know about this.
All the best,
Lili
I have a question about the pattern vs. pictures. The written pattern indicates that there should be 5 “sets” of white stripes before the leg holes for male size XS, but the picture of the male XS sweater seems to show 7 sets of stripes. Should I be working another two repeats of the colors before separating for the leg holes?
Hi Shark,
Thanks for reaching out! While the pattern does indicate to repeat Rounds 1 – 6 five more times for the XS size, you will actually end up with 7 sets of white stripes. That’s because you will already have worked Rounds 1 – 6 once through before repeating it 5 more times (so we’re up to 6 sets of white stripes now). Then, you repeat just Rounds 1 and 2, and then Round 1 once more, which adds the 7th set of white stripes!
I hope this helps clarify things!
All the best,
Lili
