Dappled Light Pullover
Totally engaging, uniquely beautiful, and easier than it looks… Cast on for our Dappled Light Pullover in gorgeous Linen Quill yarn and make something amazing!
If you’ve never knit stranded colorwork before, now might be a great time to start! All you do is switch colors every few stitches, bringing the yarn loosely across the wrong side of your work as you go.
Old pros may hold one color in each hand and knit English style with their right hand and Continental with their left, but newer knitters can simplify matters by just dropping the yarn you’re not using and picking up the one you are. And when you’re done, you’ll feel an immense sense of pride and accomplishment. You really did knit that!
First step? Dive into Linen Quill’s spectacular palette and choose your colors! Our version highlights the depth and dimension you can create with a gradient. From Sweet Potato to Super Orange to Peachy Pink, the subtle shift in colors is absolutely luminous against warm Reed Gray.
There are lots of ways to make your colorwork really sing. For example, the two middle swatches in the photo above use the complementary colors red and green to generate a little buzz. Because these colors’ relationships are so intense, the lighter colors here, which are greens, almost read as neutrals. The magic of color is at work, making a little mischief and creating complexity!
These swatches also illustrate the role value (the lightness or darkness of your colors) plays in your yarn choice. You can see that the Chestnut Red and Stillwater Blue swatches, above, use very dark and very light colors together and that this creates dimension, as well as contrast. Another aspect of color to consider!
Whether you choose one of our color combinations, or dive into Linen Quill’s gorgeous palette to make your own, the depth of this yarn will add its own earthy character to your Dappled Light Pullover. Fifty percent fine highland wool, 35% alpaca, and 15% linen, each of these fibers takes dye a little differently, so each color of Linen Quill is rich in variation and natural beauty.
Make your Dappled Light Pullover as scintillating as a woods walk in May or as mysterious as moonlight on a dark pond. Make it holding the yarn in both hands or just one. Make it fast; make it slow; make it loud; make it hushed. And once you’ve made it, know that you are truly capable of making beautiful things!

I am trying to pick colors and could use some help. Here is what I have picked and I am not sure about the fade effect or the base color, MC Oatmeal Grey or Reed Grey, CC Peony Pink or Rose Granite, CC Rosewood pink, CC Chestnut Red. I would greatly appreciate advice on the colors.
Hi RC,
Thank you for writing in! You are off to such a great start with those combinations. I would recommend the following for a really beautiful fade of warm tones:
MC: Reed Gray
CC 1: Rose Granite
CC 2: Rosewood Pink
CC 3: Chestnut Red
I hope this helps but please let us know if you’d like us to put together any other combinations and we would be happy to take a look!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Thank you.
Fingers crossed for a hat pattern that looks like your swatches!
Hi Dinah,
Thank you for writing in! That’s a great idea and I will share it with the team!
Happy making,
Gavriella
I second this comment. How adorable would that hat be!?! And, perhaps, matching fingerless gloves!??!
I love this pattern and the yarn colors are gorgeous! What do you think of MC: Reed Gray, CC1 Vintage Céladon, CC2 True Turquoise, CC3 High Tide? Would that work well or would a different set work better in the blues?
Hi Emily,
Thank you for your question! Those colors would work wonderfully together! Please let us know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I’d live to try this pattern.
Would these colours work?
MC: Reed Gray
CC 1: Lychee Pink
CC 2: Rosewood Pink
CC 3: Chestnut Red
Hi Eve,
Those colors would work wonderfully together. Please let us know if you have any other questions!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I’ve started the body of the sweater and read ahead to making the sleeves. Double pointed needles for the whole sleeve? Two whole sleeves? Not in my wheelhouse. Would 9″ circular needles work?
Hi Lois,
Thank you for reaching out! You can definitely use 9″ circular needles if that is more comfortable for you! We always suggest knitting with whatever needles best suit you as a knitter.
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Hello, I love this pattern and very much want to make it. Unfortunately I’m allergic to highland wool, so I can’t use the Linen Quill. I can wear merino and alpaca. Is there an alternative yarn at Purl Soho that I can swap in instead of the Linen Quill?
Hi Judith,
Thanks for writing in! Since this sweater was designed in a fingering weight yarn, one of our other fingering weight yarns would be a great choice. In particular, I’d recommend either Quartz or Line Weight!
All the best,
Lili
Thank you so much, Lili. I ordered the Quartz: Reed Gray for the body, and Yellow Yarrow, Golden Green, and Fresh Pickle for the yoke. Very excited to get the yarn and to start the project. Many thanks!
You’re very welcome, and happy knitting!
All the best,
Lili
Hello! Thank you for this beautiful pattern, and I’m excited the Linen Quill is on sale. There are soooo many gorgeous colors to choose from. I’d love to use some bright colors but could use some help. I’m thinking of using Bright Flamingo, Super Orange, and Red Poppy and then not sure if Reed Gray would be a good main color. Thank you!
Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for writing in! We are so happy this pattern has caught your eye. I think those contrast colors sound phenomenal together and for a main color, you could really bring them in with either Reed Gray, Honey Pink, or Wheat Flour. I think either of these main colors could really help your contrast hues pop!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
Thank you very much, Gavriella!
Love the pattern: considering the following colors:
MC stonewall gray
Crocus bud
Purple clematis
Deep petunia
What do you think? Any recommendations for a different purplish fade or which order? Was thinking dark to light top to bottom…
Hi Molly,
Thank you for writing in! I think the colors you have chosen sound lovely and would be the perfect purple combination! You could also try
MC: Stonewall
CC1: Purple Smoke
CC2: Crocus Bud
CC3: Purple Clematis but I really think any of these combinations would be wonderful!
Happy knitting,
Gavriella
I am almost finish with this sweater but I can not make out the final decrease for 35 have studied it and have tried to figure it out but it does not add up. Please enlighten me.
Hi Ghislaine,
Thank you for writing in! I think things can get a little crossed here so to help with that, I have written the instructions to reflect only instructions for your size. The directions are as follows:
Decrease Round: [(K2tog) 12 times, k1] 3 times, [(k2tog) 10 times, k1] 5 times, k4. 98 stitches remain.
This section results in 86 stitches decreased for a total of 98 stitches left. I hope this helps but please let me know if you have any other questions!
All the best,
Gavriella
Just finished this. I used Quartz instead of the recommended yarn and it came out beautifully. My three colors on the yoke are yellow, medium green, and dark green against a soft wheat color for the body. What a lovely pattern! Thank you.
H there, I’m not sure I doing this correctly….On the divide front & Back section, I’m using the medium size instructions:
Does this meank8 then go back & grab 16?
Hi Angela,
Yes, that’s totally correct!
All the best,
Lili
