Tiny Tile Quilt In Spectrum Cotton
Playful flickers of color, tumbling prisms of light, quilted systems of pathways, our Tiny Tile Quilt is not a classic for nothing!
Many of this pattern’s original fabrics have been discontinued, and so to ensure a steady supply of just the right colors, we turn now to our own beautiful Spectrum Cotton. This garment-dyed cotton is gloriously colorful, spectacularly soft, and just right for this very special quilt.
Make your Tiny Tile Quilt like ours using Spectrum Cotton in this glowing Sunrise palette, or choose an earthier version with the cool and collected Peninsula bundle. Either way, many tiny tiles make one heck of a beautiful quilt!
Designed for Purl Soho by Corinne Gill.

Pattern
For the free pattern, please visit our original Tiny Tile Quilt story. Note that one difference from the original pattern is that this version uses 90-inch wide Muslin for the Backing Fabric, and so you won’t need to piece the Backing, nor will you need to save the leftovers for the Quilt Top.
On a scale of 1-10 what might be difficulty of this Quilt?
Also was it hand quilted or machine?
It is lovely by the way, trying to justify the cost!
Hi Ellen,
Thanks for reaching out! The Tiny Tile Quilt is very beginner friendly – I would rate it perhaps a 2 or 3 out of 10 in terms of difficulty. The cutting and piecing is all very straightforward, and we do our best to explain every step in the pattern, even the basics! We machine quilted our sample, but you could certainly hand quilt it if you prefer.
I hope that helps, and happy stitching!
Julianna
Hi Purl Soho,
do you have any pictures of the blanket (or a few tiles) finished in the “Peninsula” color palette?
Hello Julia,
Thank you for reaching out! Unfortunately, we do not have a quilt made up in this particular color palette.
Happy sewing!

Hi, I just received the Sunrise bundle it’s lovely. I’m a first time quilter, I’m a bit nervous about having to prewash the fabric that it’ll fray after washing & will be difficult to cut. Can I skip prewash?
Thanks!
Audra
Hi Audra,
Thanks for reaching out and welcome to the exciting world of quilting! Because of the special dye process that we use for Spectrum Cotton, the fabric is already preshrunk, but we still recommend pre-washing to avoid color bleeding in the finished quilt. To minimize fraying, you could wash the fat quarters in mesh laundry bags, or sew a quick zig-zag stitch with your sewing machine right on the raw edges of each piece before washing.
I hope that helps, and happy stitching!
Julianna
Is there a pdf for this pattern so I dont have to keep returning to the site or print 34 pages from the print icon in the upper right hand of the website?
Hi Krupa,
Thanks for reaching out! Although we don’t have a shorter PDF, you can use the print function to remove any images or parts of the pattern from the PDF. For instance, if you want to omit the description at the beginning of the pattern, you can click on any paragraphs you don’t want to have as part of your PDF and they should disappear.
I hope that helps!
Julianna
I am trying to understand the binding. It says it should be 3/4 of a yard but of the Pacific Blue and the remainder should be 40 squares but that is all I received 3/4 yard in my kit. How much should I save for binding?
Hi Theresa,
Thanks for reaching out! Just to make sure you have enough, the binding should be the first thing you cut. In the pattern, the very first thing you cut will be six 2 1/2″ strips from selvage to selvage from Fabric F, and you will then cut the remainder of the fabric into squares.
I hope that clears things up!
Julianna
If I wanted to make this quilt queen size, how much fabric should I order?
Thanks
Hi Jenny,
Thanks for writing in!
When sizing the quilt up here are a few things to keep in mind . . .
1. Each square on the finished quilt measures 5 by 5 inches. Use this measurement to figure out how many Large Squares you’ll need. To make our 50-inch by 60-inch blanket, we made our quilt 10 squares across and 12 squares down, so 120 Large Squares.
2. To calculate how many Small Squares you’ll need, multiply the amount of Large Squares by 4. We used 480 Small Squares.
3. If you would like the same ratio of colors on your quilt, half of the Small Squares should be cut from Fabrics B and C, 2/3 of the remaining Small Squares should be cut from Fabrics D and E, and the remaining 1/3 Small Squares should be cut from Fabrics F and G.
4. To figure out yardage for the Large Squares, keep this math in mind:
The Large Squares are cut to 5 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. If you are using the same 110-inch wide muslin that we used in our project, you can get 19 Large Squares from each 5 1/2-inch cut of fabric. So, 1/4 yard (9 inches) would yield 19 Large Squares, 1/2 yard (18 inches) would yield 57 Large Squares, 3/4 yard (27 inches) would yield 76 Large Squares, etc.
5. To figure out yardage for the Small Squares, keep this math in mind:
The Small Squares are cut to 2 inches by 2 inches. You can get 20 Small Squares from each 2-inch cut of 44-inch wide fabric (keeping selvage and shrinkage in mind). So, 1/4 yard would yield 80 Small Squares, 1/2 yard would yield 180 Small Squares, etc.
6. You will also need to adjust the size of the Backing and the length of the Binding.
I hope this helps- please let me know if you have any more questions about any of the specifics as you size this quilt up.
Happy stitching!
Gaby
I am also wanting to make this quilt in queen sized but am lost on your math. Would appreciate a simpler reply/equation for increasing quilt sizing from the pattern. Thanks
Hi JC,
Thanks so much for your question and apologies for our delay in getting back to it! The large squares should finish at 5″, so you can divide your desired width and length by 5 to know how many large squares you need per row and column. Then, multiply those to know the total number of squares in the quilt. The number of small squares is 4 times the number of large squares.
To break this down further in a more useful example, a typical queen-sized quilt that measures 80 inches by 90 inches (divisible by 5), will need to be 16 squares wide by 18 inches long which comes out to 288 large squares. 288 times 4 for the small squares comes out to 1,152.
Since you can cut 48 5.5″ squares or 396 2″ squares from a yard of Spectrum Cotton, you will need 6 yards of Color A to cut 288 large squares, and 3 yards total of your contrast colors to cut 1,152 small squares.
I hope that helps simplify the math so you can make adjustments more easily!
All the best,
Zha Zha
April what did you end up buying for the queen size quilt?
When I saw Jenny’s question about upsizing this quilt to a queen size, I thought I might bother you for the same question for a king size quilt? I want this to be my first quilt and I don’t trust myself to figure it out myself!
Thanks.
Julia
Hi Julia,
Thanks for writing in! For a typical king-sized quilt that measures 100 inches by 90 inches, you will need to make your quilt 20 squares wide by 18 squares long, or 360 squares total. Since you can cut 48 5.5″ squares or 396 2″ squares from a yard of Spectrum Cotton, you will need 7.5 yards of Color A to cut 360 Large Squares, and 3.75 yards total of your contrast colors to cut 1,440 Small Squares.
I hope that helps!

Is this available to purchase as a fabric bundle?
Hi Karen,
Thanks for writing in! Unfortunately, we are no longer stocking the Tiny Tile Quilt Bundles, as several of the colors we used have been discontinued. However, you can put together your own palette from our current selection of Spectrum Cotton! A few of the basics, including Raw Oats which we used for the large squares, are out of stock, but should be back soon. You can always enter your email address on the product page for missing colors and we will let you know as soon as they are available!
All the best,
Julianna
Not a question about the quilt, but rather the fabric. I bought the Spectrum fat quarter bundle and want to use them to make a baby-sized version of this quilt in this color scheme, but I don’t know which colors are which. Is the a color card available for the fat quarter bundle?
Hi Anne,
Thank you for reaching out! Unfortunately we do not have a color card at this present time. We are happy to help you though! Please email us at customerservice@purlsoho.com and we can assist you further in identifying the colors!
Best,
Gianna
Hello,
Any suggestions to replace the Patina green in the peninsula palette. It doesn’t seem to be available.
Hi Philip,
Thanks for reaching out! Yes, unfortunately Patina Green is out of stock, I would recommend using Spectrum Cotton in Green Apple or even Viridian Green in its place!
Warmly,
Gianna
Hello,
In the original pattern page for Tiny Tile Quilt, you indicate 3 yards of fabric for the backing and 1¾ yards for fabric A. In the Spectrum Cotton versions, the quantities became “Backing Fabric: 1¾ yards” and “Fabric A: 3 yards Spectrum Cotton”, which seems wrong. Can you please confirm whether this is deliberate or a mistake please? Also, do you please know when Ocean Fog Spectrum Cotton will become available again? Many thanks!
Hi Emilie,
Thanks for reaching out! This is correct, The reason for the original pattern calling for 3 yards of Backing fabric is that the Backing fabric was also Fabric B, so after you cut the backing out you used the remainder as Fabric B, as you can see here:
Backing Fabric: 3 yards of Kiyohara’s Fine Solids in Beige
Binding Fabric: ¾ yard of Kiyohara’s Fine Solids in Black
Fabric A: 1¼ yards Moda’s Muslin, 110-inch, 200 Count in Natural
Fabric B: Remainder of Kiyohara’s Fine Solids in Beige (after cutting for Backing)
In the new pattern, they’re different fabrics so that is why the amounts are a bit different between the two patterns! Although I can’t say exactly when Spectrum Cotton will be back in stock, we will hopefully have Ocean Fog back soon!
I hope this helps,
Warmly,
Gianna
Hello!
The finished dimensions for this quilt is 50 x60 inches. The throw size batting is 60 x60 inches. Is the throw size batting large enough for this quilt?
thank you!
Hi IM,
Thanks for reaching out! If your quilt is 50 x 60 and the batting is 60 x 60 it will definitely be big enough, but you will need to trim down the batting a bit on one side to fit the 50″ width.
Warmly,
Gianna
Do you sell the Peninsula palette bundle? I would like to make the quilt using those fabrics.
Hi Sally,
Thank you for asking! We no longer sell that bundle, but the good news is, we do still sell all the items in it! If you’d like some help putting it altogether, please write to us at customerservice@purlsoho.com and we’ll be happy to help you assemble exactly what you need!
Best,
Whitney
This was my first quilt project. The directions are very clear. Spectrum is a wonderful fabric. It takes time but is definitely OK for a beginner. Because of a change in fabrics in the instructions, I had an email exchange with customer support and got all the info I needed, right away.
The finished quilt seems to me to be pretty much the same the quilt that was on display in the shop.
Working on Little Peaks now.
Thanks go to the Purl Soho team for the product and for the support. Kathryn
This quilt would be perfect for one I want to make for my new grand daughter. How would I change the pattern to a baby size?
Thank you,
Debbie
Hi Debbie,
Thank you for reaching out! Depending on the overall dimensions you would like the quilt to be, I think you could essentially cut the pattern in half following the same basic instructions but just modifying the length and width!
I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions!
Gianna
Hello. I would really love to make this. Is there a replacement color you would suggest as some of the fabrics are no longer available? Namely the peach and the buttermilk.
Hi Monique,
Thanks for writing in. It looks like the two discontinued colors are Buttermilk and Pale Melon. I would substitute Buttermilk with Desert Dune and Pale Melon with Yellow Ochre! While these colors are a bit more saturated than the original colors, they are the closest yellows we carry right now, and I think they still match the rest of the Sunrise color palette very well. Hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
I’m so completely satisfied with purlsoho , the customer service, tools, supplies, kits, free downloadable patterns,,,, I cannot say enough wonderful things about this company!
Thank you for your kind words, Dina!
All the best,
Lili
Do you have size dimensions for a baby size quilt in this pattern? Also, how much fabric I would need to purchase.
Hi Cecilia!
Thank you for your question! We currently do not have a baby size of this quilt, however we do have our Broken Dishes Baby Quilt, which would be a good reference for how much fabric is needed to make a baby version of this Tiny Tile Quilt! The Broken Dishes quilt uses 1 + 1/4 yards of fabric for the backing, and 1/2 yd. to 1/ yd. pieces of fabric for the various triangles. For the Tiny Tiles Quilt, I would still get at least 1 yard of Fabric A, too, since it is the main color for the large squares in the front section.
I hope this helps!
All the best,
Margaret
Does the Sunrise colorway come as a bundle? Looks like the fabric is sold by the yard.
Hi Karen!
Thank you for your question! While we used to carry this as a bundle, we no longer sell Tiny Tiles Quilt Bundles, however you can still shop our collection of Spectrum Cotton by the yard here. Unfortunately we have discontinued some of the colors used in the Sunrise bundle, but I can recommend using Putty Gray for Buttermilk and Desert Dune for Pale Melon!
I hope this helps!
All the best,
Margaret
