Sewing Crocheted Squares Together
There are two basic camps for sewing together finished Granny Squares: crocheting them together or sewing them together. For simplicity and neatness, we prefer to sew our squares together, and we use a whipstitch to do it. Follow along with our video Sewing Crocheted Squares Together Tutorial or step-by-step photos below to learn how!

Align two squares and locate the two chain stitches at each bottom corner. You’ll see that one chain stitch is below the other. Start sewing at the lower chain stitch of each corner, marked here with black dots.

Thread about a yard of yarn onto a tapestry needle and sew it under the outer strands of the two marked chain stitches. Pull the yarn through, leaving a 6-inch tail. Sew through these same two stitches again to secure the tail.

Whipstitch through the outer strands of adjacent stitches all the way up the adjoining sides, ending with the two lower chains at the top corners.

Place the next square above the right-hand square, and with a new length of yarn, sew a horizontal seam from right to left. Next, with the original length of yarn, add the top left square by sewing it to the top right square. Finish the quadrant by returning to the length of yarn at the center of the squares and using it to connect the two left squares, from right to left. Continue to assemble the squares in this manner.
And here’s how it looks… Nice and tidy!

I love in south fla so a lighter yarn is my preference . I like white and yellow varied squares, a throw for my bedroom‼️
Hi Eileen,
Thanks for writing in! We have many wonderful light linen and cotton yarns on our website! Click the shop side of our home page and you’ll be able to search yarn by fiber. Thanks!

When stitching together the granny squares with the gentle giant yarn do you stitch it together with giant yarn?
Hi Amanda,
Thanks for the question. You will stitch the squares together with the Gentle Giant itself. Thanks!

Hello! Thanks for such a lovely pattern … can you explain how to add on to this 4 square piece (making the entire blanket)? Like adding squares 5 and 6, 7 and 8, and so on? I am not sure if we keep making 4 squares and then join the 4 groups of 4 together in this same manner to make 16 — I’m probably making it too difficult and hoping the answer is a simple one!
Hi Laura,
Great question! Our video shows this modular view to demonstrate how the squares will all fit together, and you can continue sewing squares as they are complete if you wish by whip stitching each new square to the existing ones. However, to minimize the number of ends left to weave in, I like to start by sewing all my squares into strips first, and then seaming all those strips together. I first lay out all my completed squares to determine where I would like them placed, and then, column by column, do all the horizontal seams so I have completed strips. I then whip stitch each column to its neighbor using a very long piece of yarn.
I hope that helps, and happy stitching!

Hi there,
Just finished all the squares in the “ bear’s rainbow blanket” pattern.
2 questions: do I need to block the squares before attaching? And when whipstitching together if I join squares horizontally first into a row and the join rows are there any specific techniques other than securing each outside whipstitch seam? Any helpful hints would be appreciated
Hi Christine,
Thanks for your question! We do recommend blocking your squares before joining just to make connecting them a little easier. Blocking will also help result in a nice finished look for your blanket. There are no additional techniques for whipstitching the squares together and is sounds like you are right on track!
Happy making,

Hi!
Are the squares “right” side up at the start of this demo? Does it matter?
Also do you weave in the ends of the finished granny square first or can you see them in as you do this?
Thanks!
Hi Chloe,
Thanks for writing in. In this tutorial, all the squares are right side up! However, the whipstitch can be done either way, since it looks the same on each side. In answer to your other question, you can weave in your ends at any point! I like to do so before seaming, but it’s really up to your personal preference. Hope this helps!
All the best,
Lili
do you have written instructions with picture of joining the gran ny squares with this whip stitch?
Hi Jan,
Thank you for asking! Unfortunately, we currently only have a video tutorial for this technique. We do have closed captioning for our videos, which may be helpful to use as a written guide for each step, though!
I apologize for the inconvenience, but I hope the video captions are still helpful in the meantime!
All the best,
Margaret
Is it possible to use a join as you go method for this pattern so that you don’t have to whip stitch everything together at the end? I’ve seen some videos online about joining as you go for granny squares but wasn’t sure if this method can be applied to any blanket.
It’s too late for me to do so with this current blanket but I have a kit for another one…..Love this pattern.
Hi Deb,
That is a great question! You can absolutely use a join-as-you-go method for joining your squares in the future. One thing to keep in mind is that joining as you go takes a significant amount of yarn so you will want to be sure you have a few skeins of your main color to complete your project.
Happy making,
Gavriella
