Kitchen Garden Blanket
Our Kitchen Garden Blanket pattern is a satisfyingly simple project to grow and tend, with the hand-dyed colors of our scrumptiously soft Pepper yarn bringing a variety of hues to the table!
A single ply of 100% superwash merino wool, Pepper has a luminous glow and a softness that babies will love to cuddle and squeeze… And yes, “superwash” means it’s machine washable, too! The superwash fleeces come from a carbon-neutral mill in Uruguay and their happy flocks of merino sheep, and then our partner mill in Peru spins these fleeces into a smooth sport- to DK-weight yarn, applying the lively colors by hand.
Pepper’s palette has two distinct characters: Some are delicately seasoned, with 3 or 4 colors speckled by hand onto a warm white base, and others are turned up a notch, with more saturated hues hand-printed onto the yarn, coating the strand in rich color with just a hint of white peeking through. We suggest choosing one color from each family for your blanket!
You knit your Kitchen Garden Blanket with two strands of Pepper held together, planting rows of plush seed stitch with slip stitch selvages. Choose between a smaller Crib size or a generous Throw size… Either way, every row will fly by on US 11 needles!

Materials
- 8 (14) skeins of Purl Soho’s Pepper, 100% superwash merino wool yarn. Each skein of this sport- to light worsted/dk-weight yarn is 218 yards/ 100 grams.
- Color A: 4 (7) skeins; approximately 870 (1450) total yards required.
- Color B: 4 (7) skeins; approximately 870 (1450) total yards required.
- US 11 (8 mm), 32- or 40-inch circular knitting needles
We used these colorful pairs for our samples…
- Pink Blanket: Pink Apricot + Spring Daffodil
- Blue Blanket: Peacock Feather + Comic Book
- Green Blanket: Fresh Pomelo + Ferris Wheel
GAUGE
14 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in seed stitch, holding yarn double
SIZE
Crib (Throw)
Finished Dimensions: 30 inches wide x 40¼ inches long (40¼ inches wide X 50 inches long)
Samples: We knit the Crib size.
NOTES
SLIP STITCHES
Slip stitches purlwise with yarn in front.
STITCH MULTIPLE
This pattern works over an odd number of stitches.
PATTERN
Holding Color A and Color B together, cast on 105 (141) stitches. We used a basic Long Tail Cast On.
Row 1 (right side): K2, *p1, k1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Row 2 (wrong side): Slip 1 (see Notes) *k1, p1, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, k1, slip 1.
Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 40¼ (50) inches from cast-on edge, ending with Row 2.
With right side facing you, bind off in stitch pattern.
FINISHING
Weave in ends and gently wet block.

I’m a new knitter and don’t know how to calculate the right amount of yarn to buy. I would like to make the Kitchen Garden blanket using the Peppered yarn but a little larger. I would like it to be 48×60. How many more skeins would I need?

This is a really great question, and I’m thrilled to walk you through the math here! You can take the original area of the sample blanket (40.25 x 50 = 2012.5) and the original yardage (2,900 yards) to set up a ratio. 2,900 yards x 2,880 in squared = 8,352,000. Divide this by your original area (2,012.5 square inches). You’ll need 4,151 yards! Divide this by the number of yards in the skein (218 yards), and you’ll find you need 20 skeins (rounded up).

Hello, I’d like to follow-up on this request. For this larger blanket, how many stitches would one need to cast on to begin, and would the modification to the pattern simply be to add more repeats in between the asterisks for each row? Thank you.

To find your cast-on number, you can multiply the stitch gauge by the desired width (3.5 stitches per inch x 48 inches would give you 168 stitches). This pattern works over an odd number of stitches, so you could cast on 169 stitches to work the pattern.
You’re exactly right! You can work the repeats between the asterisks until the last two stitches of each row, regardless of how wide the blanket is.

What two colors of Pepper yarn could I use to knit a purple throw?

We have three shades that lean purple in Pepper: Purple Onion, Bright Violet, and Purple Cassis. It really depends on your preference which two you would like to pair! Combining Purple Onion with either of the other two options will give you a bit more contrast. Holding Purple Cassis and Bright Violet would offer lower contrast and a more magenta undertone.

I would suggest Sunflower Yellow, Heirloom White, Sour Pickle, and Fresh Pomelo! You should be able to work this with 3 skeins of each color to make a blanket 30 x 30 inches.
