Cottage Creations Flap Hat
Cottage Creations’ Flap Hat is a great pattern in the spirit of Elizabeth Zimmermann, lighthearted and thorough with ingenious techniques. 
Carol Anderson, the author and owner of Cottage Creations, fills each of her booklets with stories, tips, and illustrations by her daughter Kari. We love the way she manages to add humor, helpful reminders, extra patterns and inspiration into each booklet.

Joelle made her own Flap Hat using two skeins of Jade Sapphire’s sumptuous 8-ply cashmere. This pattern can be made for all sizes of heads, from toddler to grown-up, with worsted weight yarn. The flaps are wonderfully warm, with i-cord ties that dangle from each point. The crown shaping comes together 5 different ways, shown in one of Kari’s sketches. Joelle chose the “side to side” decreases.
That’s a darling hat (and I’ll bet it looks great on Joelle). I might have to swing by and pick up that pamphlet as i’m in the midst of the holiday knitting marathon. Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

the hat is beautiful! i got the pattern and some lovely yarn but i’m not sure if i should double the yarn (like the pattern says to) or make it to look like the example you made, which is awesome and not doubled. any ideas??

If your yarn is the same gauge as ours when knit singly (about 4 stitches per inch), then go for it. On the other hand, doubling the yarn creates a sumptuous, thick fabric with a unique stitch. Maybe you should just make two!
Which size did Joelle use for her hat? I got the yarn & pattern. Don’t know which size to use or what part of head to measure to find size?
Hi SG, I made the medium size. Measure around from your forehead, just above your ears, and around the widest part of the back of your head. Hats stretch, so if your head measures 22 inches around, a hat that is 20 or 21 inches would fit well. Good luck! — Joelle
