Purl Through The Back Loop (p tbl)
Learn how to create this twisted stitch by purling through the back loop. Instead of purling in the front of the stitch as usual, purl through the back leg of the stitch, bringing the working needle toward you in a customary purl motion. Our Purl Through The Back Loop (p tbl) Tutorial shows you how!

Hi, I’m going to be showing you how to purl through the back loop of a stitch. So we’ll just knit a few stitches to start. And how you purl through the back loop is you bring your yarn forward, you take the point of your right needle, and you put it to the back of the, of the stitch, and you purl like so.
So instead of purling to the front, you’re purling to the back of the stitch. We’ll do that again. Purl to the back, as you bring your, the point of your right needle to the back of the stitch, and purl to the back of it. Just like that.
Do that one more time slowly. So bring your working yarn to the front, take your, the point of your right needle, and go from the back. And that is purl through the back.

Hi Felicity,
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately we don’t have the resources at the moment to do another video for this stitch, but I will certainly pass your request along to the design team. It may help to keep in mind that the way you insert the right hand needle into the back of the stitch is completely the same no matter how you knit, and once your needle is in the stitch appropriately, you will proceed to purl it however you normally do.
I hope that clears things up!
Julianna
Hello,
Do you have a video on knitting through the back loop?
Hi Kim,
Thanks for writing in! I’m afraid we don’t have a video for knitting through the back loop, but I will be sure to pass your request along to the design team!
All the best,
Julianna
