About This Yarn

• All of the wool for Big Mountain Cormo Worsted comes from Earthstar Farm's small, beloved flock of pasture-raised Cormo sheep who love their Rocky Mountain lives. The farm's practices are time-tested, gentle, and humane, and the wool is combed and spun into yarn by an artisanal family mill in Wyoming. The whole process, from shearing to milling, happens just once a year... This is truly a small-batch yarn!
• The Cormo breed is a cross between Corriedale and Saxon merino, and their beautiful wool is prized for its exceptional softness, elasticity, and lightweight warmth. Cormo sheep were first bred in Tasmania, Australia in 1959 and were imported to the United States in 1976. Earthstar Farm's flock are the direct descendants of those first American Cormos. The deep-cold winter climate of the Montana Rockies helps these sheep grow extra fine and thick fleece to keep them snug without weighing them down... Music to knitter's ears!
• Big Mountain Cormo Worsted comes in five undyed shades, a naturally beautiful palette straight from the sheep. The farm carefully breeds for three pure, unmixed colors: Swan, a soft creamy white; Raven, a rich, complex brown-black; and Merlin, a warm, taupe-y moorit color. Two mixed grays, Eiderdown and Dove, complete the range and round out the collection with subtle complexity.
