Nine-Note Seed Stitch Wrap
Our Nine-Note Seed Stitch Wrap is a gorgeous swath of fabric that plays a beautiful tune!
All you need to orchestrate this spectacular knit is our Nine-Note Bundle, a carefully calibrated scale of nine skeins ranging from very pale to very saturated.
Similar to our Cashmere Ombré Wrap Kit but at a significantly lower cost, our Nine-Note Bundle is still super special. An incredibly soft mix of 80% extra fine merino and 20% baby alpaca in a wonderfully squishy light worsted weight, it has a beautiful drape and a start-to-finish time that’s more ditty than dirge.
The Nine-Note Bundle is available in four dreamy colors. Mulberry (at the top of the page) is a reddish purple with a mysterious mood, and Hyacinth (right above) is a punchy blue that rides the purple border.
Tidewater (above) is a gentle ocean wave, and Rosebud (below) is a warm pink designed to brighten a winter day. All four colors are stunning from light to dark!

Materials
Our Nine-Note Bundle includes…
- 9 skeins of 80% extra fine merino wool and 20% baby alpaca yarn. Each skein is 100 yards/ 50 grams; approximately 900 yards required. NOTE: This yarn is only available in the Nine-Note Bundle. (NOTE: We no longer offer the Hyacinth and Rosebud bundles.)
- A Purl Soho canvas tote bag
- A postcard with a link to this free pattern
You will also need…
- US 7 (4.5 mm), 24-inch circular needles
GAUGE
17½ stitches and 33 rows = 4 inches in seed stitch, blocked
NOTE: To ensure all your stripes are the same length, be sure to reuse your swatch yarn.
SIZE
Finished Dimensions: Approximately 15 inches wide x 68 inches long
NOTES
STITCH MULTIPLE
This pattern is worked over an odd number of stitches.
COLOR SEQUENCE
You will start with the darkest color in the color sequence, then move on to the color one shade lighter until you have used all nine skeins, from dark to light.
PATTERN
Starting with the darkest color, cast on 65 stitches. We used a basic Long Tail Cast On.
Row 1: *K1, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1.
Repeat Row 1 until piece measures about 7½ inches from cast-on edge or until skein nearly runs out.
*Right-Side Row: Join next lighter color in the sequence (see Notes), and work Row 1.
Repeat Row 1 until this stripe measures the same as first stripe, ending with a wrong-side row (i.e. on the same side you finished the first skein so that all tails are along the same selvage).
Repeat from * working through entire sequence of eight skeins.
Bind-Off Row: K1, *p1, pass first stitch over, k1, pass first stitch over, repeat from * to end of row.
Weave in ends and gently block.
I love these colors, but hate working in seed stitch! If I did this in garter stitch, how would it affect the feel or size of the wrap? Should I do anything different with the pattern to work it in garter stitch?

Thanks for writing in! You can certainly use garter stitch with this pattern, however, garter stitch is significantly different in terms of width and length compared to seed stitch, so you will need to make a few adjustments! Seed stitch comes out wider than garter both vertically and horizontally, so to knit this in garter stitch, you will want to start out by working a gauge swatch to determine your stitches per inch. From there you can adjust your cast on amount. The only issue is this bundle comes with a perfect amount of yarn for this pattern as written and we don’t sell the skeins separately, so you will want to cast on fewer stitches and ultimately have a scarf that is a bit more narrow so that you can have a long enough scarf!

Referring to the note above, if doing Garter stitch, what Number of stitches would you suggest casting on for the correct length. I understand it would not be as wide.

Since garter stitch is significantly different in terms of width and length compared to seed stitch, seed stitch comes out wider than garter both vertically and horizontally, so to knit this in garter stitch, you will need to start out by working a swatch to determine your gauge and stitches per inch. From there you can calculate your cast on! Ultimately, you will want to cast on fewer stitches and have the width of the scarf come out a bit more narrow to ensure that you will have enough yarn to complete the scarf as well as a long enough scarf!

Am I missing something? I don’t think this is a pattern for a seed stitch.

This is a seed stitch pattern, you can find the instructions under the PATTERN section on this page, for seed stitch you work one row of instructions, and repeat that throughout the duration of the wrap, Row 1: *K1, p1, repeat from * to last stitch, k1. So, you will repeat row 1 every row, this will give you a seed stitch.

Other than garter stitch and seed stitch, is there another stitch that would work for this scarf and look good on both sides?

Thanks for reaching out! I would suggest using a Mistake Rib patter for this wrap! It is very easy and will look great on both sides, you can find the stitch pattern here: Mistake Rib Scarf Story
The Mistake Rib works over a multiple of 4 + 3 stitches, so I would suggest casting on 67 stitches, however, I do recommend checking your gauge prior to beginning!

Would I be able to make “The Weekender” sweater in this yarn to go with the scarf? I’m a relatively new knitter and have mastered the Weekender and love wearing it. Having this wrap in its gradients and The Weekender in one color of the same fibre as the scarf would be great. If this fiber wouldn’t work for both pieces, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for reaching out! This yarn is a worsted weight, so it would work for The Weekender pattern, however, we only sell the yarn as a bundle and not as individual skeins and unfortunately, there are not enough yards per bundle to complete the sweater… I would recommend using our yarn Plenty instead! Depending on which color of wrap you are planning on making, there should be a color of Plenty that will coordinate well with the bundle (keep in mind the colors won’t be exactly the same as colors within the bundle since it is a different yarn, but will be pretty close!) For example, with the Mulberry bundle, I would recommend Plenty in Fresh Fig or Red Plum; for the Rosebud bundle, I would recommend Plenty in Peony Pink or Rose Hip; for the Hyacinth bundle I would recommend Plenty in Forget-Me-Not Blue or Blue Pansy; lastly, for the Tidewater bundle, I would recommend Plenty in Blue Jeans or Night Blue!

Do you really have to block this when finished? What would be the purpose?

Thanks for reaching out with this question. There are a few reasons that you may want to block your wrap! First, many knitters find that blocking evens out their stitches and improves the drape of the fabric. Another reason is to achieve the correct gauge. If your gauge is a bit off, but you still want to get the intended dimensions, you can use blocking to guide your finished wrap to the correct size. In the end, while many knitters may choose to block this wrap, it is completely optional!

Another reason to block items is because yarn gets dirty, depending where you knit (on the bus, at restaurants, at home with pets, etc)., and your hands aren’t always clean when you pick up your knitting. Just like you wash something from the store before wearing it, you should wash your knits before wearing 🙂
Can I use two bundles and this pattern to make a throw? If so, how many stitches would I cast on?

Thanks for writing in. I think that’s a great idea to make this wrap into a throw! With two bundles, I’d recommend simply casting on about twice the number of stitches–so, 129 or 131, since the pattern works over an odd multiple of stitches! Then, you can just follow the pattern as written, and you’ll end up with a throw with the dimensions 30″ x 68,” or twice the area of one wrap. Hope this helps!

Hi Purl Soho team! I’ve been keen to try Tunisian crochet, so was wondering if it might work to use this nine-note bundle with your Tunisian Crochet Scarf pattern (https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2015/10/13/tunisian-crochet-scarf/) to make an ombre scarf?

Thanks for writing in! An ombre Tunisian crochet scarf sounds absolutely stunning and this bundle could work really well for such a project, but I’m just not sure if this particular pattern is the best fit. This pattern features Alpaca Pure, which we unfortunately had to discontinue, an aran weight yarn. The yarn in the Nine-Note Bundle is closer to a DK, so you would have to make adjustments to the number of stitches that are cast on to match the same width as the scarf in the pattern. Crochet tends to also use more yarn than knitting, so my worry is that you may run out of yarn before your scarf reaches your preferred length.
I would suggest looking up Tunisian crochet scarf patterns that feature DK weight yarns so you can more easily estimate how much yardage you might need for your project. Each Nine-Note Bundle contains approximately 900 yards of yarn, so if you find a scarf pattern that calls for around that amount of yarn, I feel like that’s a safer bet!

Can this wrap be made with a cotton yarn?

Thanks for writing in. You can absolutely make this wrap with a cotton yarn! However, we don’t have as smooth a gradient of colors in any of our yarn lines, as is featured in this bundle. But perhaps you’ll be able to put together your own palette with some of the colors we offer in our cotton yarns!

I bought two Nine Note bundles for my daughter for Christmas. I am knitting the Mulberry scarf for her and she will knit the Hyacinth. I started mine and I must say that this yarn is HEAVENLY!!!! It is incredibly soft, and the stitch definition is just beautiful!!!! It is such wonderful yarn to knit with that I ordered a third bundle in Rosebud, to knit a baby blanket! I HIGHLY recommend this yarn, and the Purl Soho company is terrific to work with!! SO HAPPY to start my 2022 knitting with this project!
I have Tidewater. Just casting on now. Why are there 2 skeins of the darkest colour?

At this point, I should choose next darkest colour. So what happens with the 2nd skein of darkest colour? Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out! I’d be happy to clarify how to proceed with your Tidewater Bundle. Each Nine-Note bundle comes with one skein of each of the nine colors, ranging from darkest to lightest; the palette was specifically designed to move gently from one color to the next, so many of the color shifts are very subtle. The two darkest skeins you have are actually two different colors, so you’ll want to move from the darkest one on to the next darkest and then continue in that way through the rest of the colors. I don’t understand with the gauge instructions you say 17 1/2 stitches. How do you have a 1/2 stitch? And do you cut the gauge then use it as a measurement?

Thanks for reaching out! When the gauge measurement goes into a half-inch (like 17½) that would mean that when you are measuring the gauge, the 4-inch mark on your ruler would hit right in the center of the stitch (measuring only one leg, rather than both legs). This will then be used for the gauge measurement, so you should have 17½ stitches every 4 inches. For more information about gauge, I suggest checking out our wonderful tutorial, All About Gauge!

I purchased the nine note bundle and needles but did not see any notes about how to change colors for this pattern or the cast off for this pattern. Just the basic cast on 65 knit 1 purl 1 to end, ending with a knit for each row. Are there any other instructions? Thanks, Carol

Thanks for writing in. All you’ll need to do to change colors is start knitting with the next ball of yarn! The only other instruction I can think of that might be useful is that you’ll want to do this at the edge of your work (at the end of a row), so that the color change doesn’t happen in the center of the scarf. For the bind-off, this is what we recommend:
Bind-Off Row: K1, *p1, pass first stitch over, k1, pass first stitch over, repeat from * to end of row.

Hello, I just finished the blue color way of this wrap for one daughter. Now my other daughter wants one in an orange color. I love this yarn is so soft and I love it!

the 24” circular needle seems too long when i cast on 65 stitches…i can’t even join in the round, let alone knit. am i missing something?

Thanks for writing in. This scarf is actually knit flat, so you won’t need to join in the round at all! We recommend using circular needles, since the scarf is too wide to fit comfortable on most straight needles. I hope this helps clear things up!

I’m so sorry to say that we are not able to sell the skeins that come in the Nine-Note Bundle individually, since each bundle is dyed together to create the perfect gradient. I would recommend buying a second bundle to make a wider version of the wrap!

Would there be enough yarn in this bundle to knit this wrap in the linen stitch and keep the same finished measurements? The linen stitch has a less bulky drape. I just don’t know about the yardage. Thank you.
