Summer Romper For Kids In Spectrum Cotton
Our Summer Romper is designed for rolling and spinning, running and dancing, climbing and crawling, and all the things that kids do when they’re feeling free!
We appreciate that there’s no fussing with snaps or buttons, no matching tops to bottoms, no special laundering or ironing, but most of all, we love the feeling kids get from knowing that their Summer Romper was made by someone who loves them.
A classic Purl Soho pattern, this version of our Summer Romper is in our Spectrum Cotton. Garment-dyed for softness and beauty, our Spectrum Cotton has the feeling of that shirt you wear everyday (or wish you could!).
Spectrum Cotton comes in dozens of colors, all created with non-toxic, low-impact dyes. So many gorgeous blues and pinks and yellows and greens… If only summer were longer!
Designed for Purl Soho by Corinne Gill.
Materials
- 1 (1, 1, 1¼, 1¼, 1¼, 1¼) yards of light to medium weight 45-inch wide fabric. We used Spectrum Cotton in Raincoat Yellow, Vintage Pink, and Raw Oats.
- 1 (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2) yard of ½-inch Braided Elastic, White
- A 110-yard spool of Gutermann’s Cotton Sewing Thread in a color to match the fabric. We used 1620, 5030, and 1040.
- An 18mm Bias Tape Maker
- A small scrap of ribbon, approximately 2½ inches long
- A safety pin
- A free Summer Romper for Kids template, printed, prepared, and cut out in the appropriate size
Sizes
To fit ages 2 (3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10, 11)
Finished Waist Sizes: 22 (23, 23 ½, 25, 26, 27, 27 ½) inches in circumference, unstretched

It’s very hard to find free patterns in German language, usually you buy them.
But recently I found out that there are a looot of free tutorials and patterns with English instructions, and since then I don’t stop sewing.
This romper I made also in a long version with double gauze, since I live in Greece and my daughter is just two years old I prefer the legs to be covered for protection against sun.
Also, I just didn’t make the waistband and elastic since I made it wrong somehow the first time and then decided it’s more comfy for my daughter to be baggy and spacey and airy.
Just today I finished matching rompers for my friends two daughters, one and three years old.
For the older girl I added wooden beads on the straps.
I love how versatile it is!

I made two of these rompers for my 4 year old granddaughter. I am so pleased with your pattern!
The instructions were crystal clear and so easy to follow.

Thanks for writing in. Yes, the seam allowances are included in the template! For this pattern, you will be sewing with a ¼-inch seam allowance, unless otherwise noted.

Thank you for your question! We re-released this pattern in Spectrum Cotton as an update to a favorite pattern using our new fabric. We altered the fabric dimensions to suit the characteristics of Spectrum Cotton for a better fit as well as include a little extra wiggle room for cutting and seam allowances.

How long should I make the half inch elastic, for the upper front & back bibs, for the 4-5 year romper shorts. The instructions give no indication of lthis ength?

FROM THE ELASTIC
Cut two 6 (6 ¼, 6 ½, 7 ¼, 8 ¼, 8 ¾, 9)–inch pieces for the Neckline Elastic.
Cut one 22 ½ (23 ½, 24, 25 ½, 26 ½, 27 ½, 28)–inch pieces for the Waist Elastic.
