Neighborhood Quilt
Thompson Street Studio creates textiles fueled by the playful, exploratory spirit of hand-making. We are thrilled they have brought that energy here with their Neighborhood Quilt, a stunning example of color and geometry coming together in a communal song!
Inspired by the early 20th-century Bauhaus art movement, this quilt taps into Bauhaus titan Annie Albers and her conviction that “art is something that makes you breathe with a different kind of happiness.”* Indeed… The happiness of sandy peach against ocean blue and of patchwork blocks interrupted by sweeping arches, like bridges connecting neighborhoods.
Get all the Spectrum Cotton, Daily Linen, and Watercolor Linen you’ll need, plus the batting and thread, then go to town on this truly special beauty!

Are there instructions in the pattern on how to hand quilt?

Very pretty quilt. How much is it? Tell me is this quilt already put together? That would be the only way I could purchase it. I do not have the ability or patience to make this. But I really like it but already put together.

Thanks for writing in! I’m sorry, we don’t sell these already made, but we do have all of the materials and instructions for you to make one of your own! However, Thompson Street Studio, who designed the pattern for us, does sell completed handmade quilts. You may be able to find something similar from them!

This pattern is absolutely gorgeous. Is there a way to adapt it to cover a double size bed?

Thank you so much for the kind words and for reaching out! At present, we don’t have instructions for changing the size of this quilt, but I will certainly pass your request along to the design team! If you would like to take a stab at it yourself, the quilt is constructed using several unique blocks of various shapes, so you may be able to use the schematic to duplicate a few blocks and rearrange them to make a larger quilt. You could also add a border for a few extra inches!

I love this quilt and am very tempted to place an order for this kit if possible. I live in Australia. Are there any problems posting “down under?” How much would that cost? Also I would like to make it bigger to sit on a king size bed. Do you think I could add a border to make it measure say 60” by 72”? I could probably buy extra fabric to tone in at my usual quilting shop. And I could also buy the batting down here.

I believe you could easily add a boarder around the quilt to expand the length and width, you could even choose one of the pre existing colors in kit for the boarder!

Hello,
I bought the bundle and the pattern. I have problems with cutting and joining pieces 7 to 16 as there is no templates for them in the pattern. I am looking at the notches on the adjacent pieces and have no where to joint them (ie Pieces 6a and 6b to piece 10).

Thanks for reaching out! I am sorry you are having troubles with the pattern! Starting with piece 16, you are cutting is so that the Left side is 9 inches, right side is 14 3⁄4 inches, using Arch Template 1 for top and bottom, for piece 7 you are you are doing the same but exactly reversed from 16, you are cutting so that the Left side is 14 3⁄4 inches, right side is 9 inches and using Arch Template 1 for top and bottom. (you can find this information in the cutting list)
For sewing you will first Sew . . .Piece 7 to Piece 8, Piece 9 to Piece 8, Piece 10 to Piece 9 and then Sew . . . Piece 2b to Piece 4b, Piece 6b to Piece 4b Sew together three pieces resulting from Steps 1–3, lining up the notches when you sew the arches.

I too am having problems with creating the template for pieces 7. 10, 15 and 16. Do you cut out a rectangle and then remove the “ arches. For example piece 16 is 4 1/2” x 14” . Then using arch 1 the top and bottom arch are cut out creating the pictured piece . Thank you for your help

Thanks for your response! On page 6 we have included a template so you can see how all of the pieces are placed. This includes all of arch pieces and their notches so you can see exactly how the pieces line up!

Thanks again . I have referenced page 6 for quilt placement . I was referencing a template for the piece 16 . I will see if i can figure it using a piece of muslin .
I too have query about the arches don’t you have to add seam allowance to the tops of pieces 7,8,9,10,15 and 16 where they join the arch? Otherwise they wont fit but it doesn’t state that in the instructions. Also, what is the seam allowance for the rest of the quilt?

Thanks for writing in! You will use a 3/8-inch seam allowance for all of the pieces (you can find this info on page 6 in the note!) The seam allowance should be included in each piece, so you do not need to add additional seam allowance when cutting out the pieces.
We have added this information in notes throughout the pattern, on page 3 you can find the note regarding pieces 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, and 16:
NOTE
For pieces 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, and 16, note that given length measurements include 3/8-inch seam allowances. Cut pieces to same width as Arch Template you’re tracing, and be sure to mark notches where applicable.

On pieces 41a through 41l the measurement is 2 3/4 x 6 5/12 … can I use 6 1/2 instead because this is an extremely unusual measurement?

I followed the instructions to wash and dry all fabrics before cutting. Unfortunately the linen fabrics came out of my dryer so incredibly wrinkled that no amount of steam ironing can get them smooth enough to cut. They also shed whatever finish was on the fabric resulting in a totally different look and feel, not to mention an enormous amount of dryer lint. Any suggestions?

Like others, I was not able to follow the cutting instructions for the pieces with the concave shapes (curves in): 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16. I made a different template for these shapes instead of using the same template for the convex shaped (curves out). I started with the template, cut off the seam allowance used for the convex shape, and moved the 3/8″ seam allowance to the other side (think of matching sewing line to sewing line). It worked perfectly (got the measurements called for in the pattern due to the different angle of the curve). I was able to complete the quilt.
Love this! I was wondering if you plan to make more bundles: if so, I’ll wait as it’s simpler; if not, I’ll go ahead and order fabric etc now. Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out. It looks like the reason that the bundle is out of stock is because a few fabric colors are out of stock! We do plan on restocking these, but if you’re eager to get started, I’d recommend ordering the fabric individually and substituting other colors for any that are out of stock. Hope this helps!
