Lap Duvet In Spectrum Cotton
As plush and squishy as any traditional quilt but way simpler to make, our Lap Duvet is a little shortcut through the world of quilting!
Start with two pieces of fabric that move your inner aesthete. For us, Spectrum Cotton‘s bounty of gorgeous colors and its soft, casual hand are all we need to jump start our Lap Duvet motor!
Sew them together with some batting in between, turn it all inside out, tack it together with quick little stitches, and cozy up on the fire escape, in the deck chair, or across the couch!
Spectrum Cotton comes in over 40 insanely beautiful garment-dyed colors. Choose the two that call your name (impossible to go wrong!) and whip up this simplest of classics!
Materials
To make one Lap Duvet…
- Two 1¾-yards pieces of Purl Soho’s Spectrum Cotton, in different colors
- Quilters Dream’s Wool Batting, crib size
- A 110-yard spool of Gutermann’s Cotton Sewing Thread. We used a color that would make high-contrast tacking stitches.
Here are our color combos…
Orange Russet + Lilac Blossom, with thread color 1640 (yellow)
Orange Nasturtium + Vintage Pink, with thread color 8975 (green)
Yellow Ochre + Pink Tulip, with thread color 7532 (blue)
Pure Pool + Pine Nut, with thread color 4915 (red)
Grasshopper Green + Orchid Gray, with thread color 1720 (orange)
Size
Finished Dimensions: Approximately 58 x 42 inches

Hello! This pattern will make great holiday gifts. Would it be possible to tie the quilt by hand with some pearl cotton/embroidery needle instead of machine stitching @ the marked intervals?

Great question! Yes, I think hand ties would be a wonderful alternative way to secure the layers of the duvet! Our Sunny Tied Quilt has instructions for a very easy method for hand tying a quilt!

I love this. Thinking it would be fun to do a binding with a beautiful Liberty of London fabric for an extra pop (I know I need to do the sandwich quilt method in this case). If I plan on doing this in crib or throw size how much yardage should I buy to make my binding? Is there a formula for calculating how much fabric you need for binding based on circumference?

Hi Ganna,
Thanks for writing in, and what a lovely idea! Liberty prints always make such a gorgeous binding, and will really pop against an uncomplicated quilt like this. I’m not aware of a simple formula for calculating yardage for quilt binding, but if you check your preferred search engine for “Quilt Binding Calculator” you should find several free calculators that will do all the math for you!

Is it possible to make these in a twin size?
