Our Gemstones + Knots Necklaces Kit comes with everything you need to make a set of these necklaces: four designs, one color. With an adjustable sterling silver bead closure to vary the lengths, piling on your Gemstones +Knots Necklaces is highly recommended!
To make them, you’ll learn and employ the very basic beading technique of tying knots between beads. We love the texture these knots add but also that they allow the beads to hang with grace and ease and to be placed exactly where you want them along the cord.
The only hard part of making these luminescent beauties is having to choose from among Purl Soho’s nine different semi-precious Small Gemstone Beads. From Green Quartz and Pink Moonstone to Light Carnelian and Natural Chalcedony, each irregularly faceted stone is perfectly imperfect, reminding us that they do, in fact, come from our amazing earth.
In addition to a strand of beads, each Gemstones + Knots Necklaces Kit includes some of Purl Soho’s beautiful Sterling Silver Beads (for the closures), Fine Tip Tweezers, thorough how-to instructions for tying the two types of beading knots and for making the four different designs, plus two packs of Griffin’s Silk Bead Cord, No. 2 in a color specifically chosen for each bead.

The row by row names of the colors in the kits don’t seem consistent with the color names of the beads sold individually, if you look back and forth at the pictures. Are you sure the middle row of kits is reflecting the correct bead names? Thank you.

Thanks for writing in! The Model is wearing several different colors! These lovely necklaces are fun to layer in different combinations. Each necklace has an adjustable sterling silver bead closure to vary the lengths. You place the necklace over your head and use the sliding bead to vary the length!

I bought the kit. I am not sure how long I should measure each necklace. Also if I cut the string for necklace1 how will the needle attach for the second necklace?

Thanks for reaching out! Each necklace will start by tying a beginning bead near the very end of the cord. You then bead the necklace beginning at the end of the of the thread farthest from the needle. Once you have completed the necklace, you will cut off the the remaining thread which will have the needle still attached. By this method, you will be able to make 2 necklaces from each bobbin of thread! When finished, each necklace will be approximately 27 inches, with adjustable closure.

I just got the kit and I have a question. It says to snip off the end of of the silk cord for practice, but then my practice cord will have no needle attached, correct?

I think that I can help! You will be working your practice piece on the whole of the string attached to needle. This piece will start by tying a beginning bead near the very end of the cord. You then practice beginning at the end of the of the thread farthest from the needle. Once you have completed the practice piece, you will cut off the the remaining thread which will have the needle still attached.

Hi, these look like a lovely way to keep my hands and mind occupied while staying indoors.
I’m still not clear as to whether the necklaces clasps in the back and thus, whether the necklace length be easily adjusted so that it’s more like a choker (like what’s shown on the model)? Or whether we need to make the necklaces long enough for them to go over the wearer’s head?

Thanks for writing in – great question! The necklaces have a sliding closure that can be adjusted to fit the wearer in a number of different ways. If you want more of a choker-style length, you’d just need to do one of the shorter necklace versions and the sliding closure will take care of getting it to a more fitted length once it’s slipped over the head. I have ordered some of the silk bead cord to use with this pattern and am really looking forward to it. I am wondering what your thoughts are about using cotton embroidery thread for beaded necklaces
… does it hold up?
… is the thickness appropriate?
Besides that silk is so lovely to touch and work with, is there an advantage from a jewelry-making perspective?

Great question! We haven’t tried using embroidery floss for our necklaces, but I think it could be a great option as long as you keep a few things in mind! To use it with our Small Gemstone Beads, you would need to separate the floss and use just one or two strands, which would make it weaker and more prone to breaking or fraying. Silk has the advantage that, even in a very fine strand, it’s quite strong! Embroidery floss also won’t drape as well as silk so the single or double-strand necklaces may not lay as nicely. I think you could solve both of these problems by using our Medium or Large Gemstone Beads, which have a larger hole so you can use three or four strands of floss! This would make for a stronger necklace, and the heavier beads would help the necklace hang better.

Thank you for writing in! While we have discontinued the beads used in this kit, I’d be happy to share some more details so that you can still make this necklace. The beads were a 2mm size, and the silver beads were from the brand Kamol.

Hi again and thank you for that. The gemstone beads are 2mm, but are the silver beads 2mm too? The cord has to go through the silver beads twice. Also are they faceted, hammered, square, 3-sided, etc etc. It looks like they could be Karen hill tribe beads from Thailand but I am no expert! Thank you again.
You are very welcome, Claire! After looking into this some more, the silver beads were smooth round beads from the brand Kamol, and they were smaller than the gemstone beads, measuring 1.7mm. Any tiny 1.7mm bead with a good sized hole will work, though! I was also able to find some Gemstone beads which are listed on our sale page here!

You don’t appear to carry anymore your small gemstone beads or the small sterling silver beads used in these necklaces. Can you give any specifications for them so I can try to get something similar from another online source? Since you give no specifications I’m afraid of ordering something online that won’t work.

Thanks for your question! I’m sorry to say we have discontinued the Gemstone Beads that were used in this project. However, if you would like to find a bead substitute, you will need: beads similar to the silver beads, which were from the brand Kamol, and the Gemstones Beads, which are a size 2mm.

I would like to know what size are the silver closure beads since the kit is not available. Also, since I am buying the beads individually, what type of bead for the closure would you recommend…Delica, Toho, Miyuki?

Thanks so much for reaching out! The size of the silver closure beads used in the Gemstones and Knots Necklaces are 1.7mm. Since you are substituting the beads for your necklace closure, I would recommend a more rounded bead, like Toho, or Miyuki.
