Granny Square Blanket in New Colors
Let’s give credit where credit is due and thank grannies for the endlessly fascinating square that bears their name. That said, we are certain that no grannies ever intended to keep their techniques a secret, and this Granny Square Blanket is one that anyone can make!
Instead of granny’s traditional made-from-bits-and-bobs approach, we’ve gone about our Granny Square Blankets a little more deliberately with four brand new palettes that are anything but old-fashioned.
The new palettes are shown above, from top to bottom: quirky Caravan, sweet Cake Shop, stellar Constellation, and cozy Cottage. Each one is hooked up in Purl Soho’s Worsted Twist 100% merino wool, a perfectly soft and cuddly choice for these baby-size blankets.
These fresh color stories are all available in our Granny Square Blanket Kit, an update of our original Learn to Crochet a Granny Square Blanket Kit, now in new colors, with new graphics, and a new name!
Each Kit includes all the Worsted Twist you’ll need to make your first blanket, plus our Granny Square Blanket Pattern, which will teach you exactly how to crochet this classic motif, even if you’ve never held a hook in your hand.
And once you learn how to make a granny square, you’ll be well on your way to crocheting all the other things there are to crochet beyond granny squares. Thank you for getting us started, granny!

Materials
Our Granny Square Kit is no longer available but the components are available separately! To make one Granny Square Blanket you’ll need…
- 6 skeins of Purl Soho’s Worsted Twist, 100% merino wool. (NOTE: We no longer offer Worsted Twist, but choose from one of our other worsted/aran weight yarns.)
- Inner Color: 1 skein
- Middle Colors A + B: 1 skein each
- Outer Color: 3 skeins
- A size H crochet hook, or size needed to make a 5 3/8-inch granny square
- A tapestry needle (also known as a darning needle)

Gorgeous! I’m thinking of doing one for a queen sized bed with 6 CCs plus the main color. Any idea on # of skeins I’ll need before I just wing it?

Thanks for writing in! For a queen sized blanket of about 90 x 95 inches you will need roughly 11 times the amount of yarn as we used here! You will need 33 skeins of the main color and 11 skeins of each of the 2 middle colors and 4 skeins of the innermost color. If you would like to use 6 contrast colors, you will want to divide them over the 26 skeins that would be used for these inner 3 colors!

Wouldn’t you only need four times as many skeins to make it four times the size? That is 100 x 124 inches? And that might be more of a king size blanket…. Why are you suggesting 11 times the amount? Did I miss something?

Thanks for reaching out! When calculating how much yardage you will need when increasing the size of a blanket, you have to base it on the square inches of the piece, not just by the length and width increase, and the results can sometimes be surprising. In this case, the original blanket measured 25 by 31 inches, or 775 square inches. The queen-sized blanket Cassy described that is 90 by 95 inches would be 8,550 square inches. To get from 775 to 8,550 square inches, you need to multiply by 11.03, so it will take about 11 times as much yardage for a blanket this size.

Thanks for writing in! For a throw size blanket measuring about 40″ by 55″, you will need one skein of your center color, 3 skeins each of your contrast colors A and B, and 9 skeins of your outermost color. It is up to you whether you would like to purchase the kit or just the yarn! The kit also includes the pattern, crochet hooks, a tapestry needle, and scissors, but if you already have tools, you could certainly purchase just the pattern and the yarn. If you do purchase a kit, you will have plenty of the center color included, but you will need to add 2 skeins of each middle color, and 6 skeins of the outer color.

Thank you! I got the kit but think I ‘d rather do a throw! Not ideal as may not be a ole to get the same dye lots, but I am going to go ahead and get the additional yarn now.

Thanks for reaching out! I’d be happy to help you with the colors for this blanket; is there a particular one you’re interested in? Because some of the colors included in the original bundles have unfortunately been discontinued the pre-made kits are no longer available, but you can always create your own unique palette with the colors we do have in stock!
